And it was fine, i guess but it did kind of feel like when your fun aunt goes home and youre left with your Boring Family again [ laughter ] aww. Aunt marianne lets us finger paint on the wall [ laughter ] Entrepreneur Andrew Yang used his Opening Statement tonight to differentiate himself from President Trump saying, quote, the opposite of donald trump is an asian man who likes math. [ laughter ] which is a great point but i actually think the opposite of trump would be a black guy who is a good president. [ laughter ] there you go [ cheers and applause didnt know where you guys were going to land on that one. [ laughter ] according to a debate coach on cnn, senator Bernie Sanders got a bplus for his performance last night, which he was perfectly happy with the last thing i want is for my grade to be in the top 1 [ laughter ] bplus [ applause ] according to the final numbers, author Marianne Williamson was the most searched for candidate after last nights debate. Which is silly you dont search for Marianne Williamson, you just leave a window open and put a thimble full of cbd oil on the sill [ laughter ] the personal Wikipedia Page for president ial hopeful john delaney was vandalized last night to say that senator Elizabeth Warren killed him during the democratic debate [ laughter ] its now been corrected to reflect that he is in serious but stable condition [ laughter ] the white house has announced that next week President Trump will visit a Central Florida retirement community, or as he told wilbur ross, lets go for a little drive. [ laughter ] look at all these nice friends for you, wilbur. [ laughter ] shuffleboard, you like shuffleboard dont cry, wilbur. [ laughter ] a delta pilot was removed from a fully boarded flight and arrested yesterday for allegedly attempting to fly the plane while intoxicated. How did he get alcohol, said people in coach. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause and finally, a florida man who goes by the nickname murder and has the word murder tattooed on his neck pleaded guilty yesterday to murder. [ laughter ] well, at least no one will have to ask ht heimha in for. [ laughter ] ladies and gentlemen, we have a great show for you tonight [ cheers and applause hes the emmy winning host of all in with chris hayes on msnbc, chris hayes is with us tonight. [ cheers and applause he is the cohost of the very popular iheart Radio Program the Breakfast Club and his book shook one anxiety playing tricks on me is available now Charlamagne Tha God is here tonight as well. [ cheers and applause before we get to our great guests, tonight was the second night of the second round of democratic president ial debates. For more on this its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause seth of course everyones watching these debates to see who will emerge as the leading contenders and that apparently includes donald trump who said last night during an interview on cspan that hed be watching the debates and offered this hot take ill be watching the debates tonight. You know if i didnt, youd say, i cant imagine. You know, i would like to know who im going to be running against. Maybe youll tell me after this interview, right you tell me i dont know. I mean, i would think the four or five top ones would seem to have a big edge. You have some people that shouldnt even be wasting time but i would think the four or five top ones would be the ones that would be, you know, certainly have the best chance of getting in. Seth oh. [ laughter ] is that your expert analysis that the top four or five candidates have the best chance . [ laughter ] its like a commentator at halftime during the nba finals going, i think its either going to be the raptors or the warriors, ernie. [ light laughter ] unless a third outside team sneaks in there. [ laughter ] of course the dynamic at the first nights debate ended up being mostly Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders fending off a bunch of underdogs moderates taking shots at them like former congressman and soon to be former president ial candidate john delaney [ laughter ] by the end of the night he looked like the guy who comes in third on jeopardy . Even when warren and sanders werent talking, they were winning. Bernies strategy, of course, involved a lot of arm throwing and finger wagging like he was reaching to turn off an imaginary light switch. [ laughter ] and at one point when Elizabeth Warrens plan for a wealth tax came up she literally smiled and rubbed her hands together in glee [ laughter ] look at how excited she is to tear this guy apart. Its like in looney tunes when youre starving and you see a giant turkey leg [ laughter ] we spent the most part of our day figuring out how that would look [ laughter ] nonetheless, the underdogs have been desperate to spin their debate performances last night for example, there was this moment when congressman tim ryan thought he scored a point on bernie during a Feisty Exchange on the climate crisis. What do you do with an industry that knowingly for billions of dollars in shortterm profits is destroying this planet . I say that is criminal activity that cannot be allowed to continue thank you, senator sanders. Congressman, your response well yeah i would i would just say i didnt say we couldnt get there until 2040, bernie, you dont have to yell [ laughter ] seth im sorry, have you met Bernie Sanders of course he has to yell yelling is his brand he read bedtime stories to his kids and they didnt sleep until they were 35 [ laughter ] but ryan thought that was such a killer line that today he kind of turned it into a Campaign Slogan of sorts by selling stickers on his website that say you dont have to yell. [ light laughter ] and while i understand the gist of his point, im not sure about the timing i mean, if there was ever a time to yell in american politics, its now that would be like the captain of the titanic putting up a no swimming sign after hitting the iceberg. [ laughter ] both the moderates and the moderators tried to take shots at bernie and warren over medicare for all pundits seemed obsessed with getting them to say that they would raise taxes even though the reality is that Health Care Costs would be much lower. Which is how it works in a bunch of major industrialized nations. And that led to this combative post debate interview last night in which warren deathly battled with Msnbcs Chris Matthews then youll have to give more money. Well, look. Or your pay wont go up. You know you guys dodged that tonight. Okay no, no, its not a dodge, its about where saying how much are your taxes going to go up and youd say how much are your costs going to go down no, no, different question. How much will your taxes go up no, its how much of your costs i have a different crisis its how much families end up spending i know the argument i know how you interpret it. Its not just an argument but youre covering it. But will you pay more in taxes why dont you want to answer that question . Because its as said tonight because its a question thats a republican talking point. Its not a republican talking point, its a question its a question about where people are going to come out economically the question is not do you have Health Insurance or not have Health Insurance the question is how much are you going to have to dig in your pocket to pay . I know thats the answer that youd like to give but no, its the answer [ laughter ] seth when Elizabeth Warren says, no, it is the answer, then thats the answer. She was a harvard professor. [ laughter ] youre trying to school her on health care. I didnt know that the ms in msnbc stood for mansplain. [ cheers and applause she had to fend off matthews like chris pratt fending off a velociraptor [ laughter ] then in another postdebate interview, cnn tried to get warren to take a shot at former Vice President joe biden who is currently leading in the polls, but she firmly batted it down. For people who are trying to choose between you and former Vice President biden, why are you a better candidate well, im not here to diss any other democrat just get somebody else for that job, thats not me seth wow, you know you asked a bad question when you found the one job Elizabeth Warren wont do [ laughter ] that was like when you asked the waiter for bread and he goes, this is not my section [ laughter ] of course its certainly the case, but according to the polls biden was the frontrunner coming in and all eyes seem to be on him and senator Kamala Harris. Everyone was asking, would we see harris destroy a man live on national tv again . Would biden try to fend off questions by flashing those big ole pearly whites again [ laughter ] and will new york city mayor bill de blasio be there to yell over everyone like a guy trying to hail a cab in a rainstorm [ laughter ] hey, hey, over here, hey i was here first ok, dang, you dont have to yell [ laughter ] but even before [ applause ] even before tonights debate started, things got a little weird when the chair of the Democratic National committee, tom perez, tried to fire up the crowd and call out Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell for blocking bills that democrats passed in the house. And he used a version of a nursery rhyme. Old mcconnell had a farm. Eieio. On that farm he kept all those bills that passed the house. Eieio. [ laughter ] seth i think i speak for everybody when i say, eieino [ laughter and applause that was the worst that was the worst weird al cover ever [ laughter ] you cant beat Mitch Mcconnell with nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes power him, like the villain in a horror movie. Whenever he speaks on the floor of the senate you can hear children creepily singing in the background a few months ago when mullers report out came the rain and washed the spide out [ laughter ] seth perez also spoke about the fact that he once had a job working on a garbage truck to take a shot at trump i worked on the back of a trash truck so i know garbage when i see it and folks, this administration is a Dumpster Fire [ cheers ] [ laughter ] seth its true, but i would say trump is less like a Dumpster Fire and more like the guy who sets the dumpster on fire for the insurance money [ light laughter ] boom, dumpsters gone, now we collect. [ laughter ] then once again, just as they did last night, cnn introduced all the candidates individually and once again, the lesserknown candidates polling in Single Digits had to follow the more popular candidates who got much bigger crowd reaction. Former Vice President joe biden [ cheers and applause senator Kamala Harris [ cheers and applause mayor bill de blasio [ applause ] seth man, its sucks for de blasio to have to follow those two. Its like if you were at comiccon and they introduced iron man, captain america, then ben afflecks daredevil. [ laughter ] and once they got out there with all eyes on harris and biden, biden was caught on a mic trying that old joe biden charm to preempt the confrontation. [ cheers ] go easy on me, kid. Seth hey man, if you dont want to seem old, dont talk like youre in a Humphrey Bogart movie. [ laughter ] go easy on me, kid. Well always have detroit. [ light laughter ] save my Humphrey Bogart impression for the live show [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause say, say [ light laughter ] next youre going to start telling people youre 76 years young. Right off the bat, cnn was desperately interested both in framing the issue of a health care from a right wing perspective, and also getting harris and biden to go after each other on that issue this week you released a new health care plan, which would preserve private insurance and take 10 years to phase in. Vice president bidens Campaign Calls your plan, quote, a have it every which way approach. And says its just part of a confusing pattern of equivocating about your health care stance. What do you say to that . Well, theyre probably confused because theyve not read it. Vice president biden, your response well my response is that the senators had several plans so far. You cant beat President Trump with double talk on this plan. Your response, senator . Absolutely. Unfortunately, Vice President biden, youre just simply inaccurate in what youre describing senator harris, thank you Vice President biden, your response the plan no matter how you cut it, costs 3 trillion. Seth cnn was so desperate to get them to fight, they were like romans at the colosseum health care plans, he says yours is foolish, you say his is cruel, now fight for our pleasure [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause seemed like every question was framed as an attack from someone else on stage. In fact, at one point cory booker pointed out the boxing match nature of the questions by bringing up donald trump well first of all, let me just say that the person thats enjoying this debate most right now is donald trump. As we pit democrats against each other while he is working right now to take away Americans Health care. Seth trump might be enjoying the fighting but theres no way hes enjoying all the specific policy details trump watches policy debates the way the rest of us watch foreign movies i dont know what theyre talking about but the fight scenes are amazing. [ laughter ] in fact the cnn moderators [ applause ] the moderators were so interested in getting the candidates to go after each other, that all night they were cutting people off before they could finish their answers just so they could go to someone else for a response coverage Like Mental Health care thank you, mr. Mayor. To make it harder for you to afford it thank you, senator gillibrand demoralizing us in face of the real enemy here thank you, senator. Our plan covers everyone thank you, senator. And gives People Choice thank you, senator. Seth my god this debate was like a game of taboo where every word was forbidden [ laughter ] i believe we need health [ buzzer ] im sorry, senator, you cant say the word health, its on the card [ laughter ] in fact there were multiple times when biden was answering a question and then literally just stopped talking in the middle of the sentence when he was cut off. The biden plan, which is obamacare thank you, mr. Vice president. Thank you. Its a crime and its not one that is thank you, mr. Vice president. Beyond the cost of inflation from this point on thank you, mr. Vice president. [ laughter ] seth he gave up so easily. He didnt even finish his its like when your grandpa tries to speak up at the dinner table and no one hears him i have a story about restaurants oh, never mind. [ laughter ] how are you going to fight for america when you cant even fight through the timer . Also, you know if you end up with the nominee and you run against donald trump, hes never going to stop talking. Youre going to have to talk over him have you seen him . His mouth never stops moving, hes always fighting with reporters and doing that thing where he draws little boxes with his hands. [ laughter ] i was watching the debate tonight on a tv shaped like this, but then i got bored and switched to the bachelorette. [ laughter ] one of the big divides in the debate was over Health Insurance. With the more progressive candidates on stage wanting to expand medicare through various versions of medicare for all but bidens plan is more modest, claiming he would allow people to keep their private insurance if they like it. The idea this is somehow a bad idea, no one has to keep their private insurance. But if they like their insurance, they should be able to keep it nothing is demanded in my plan that there be private insurance. It says, if the 160 Million People who have it say they like their employer insurance, they should have a right to have it seth im sorry but who likes their private insurance . Nobody likes going to the e. R. For a sprained ankle and then getting 58 envelopes in the mail from anthem. [ laughter ] i keep hearing this talking point from moderates, ive never heard anyone say, you can take my hmo when you pry from it my cold, dead hands, which will probably be pretty soon because it doesnt cover my meds [ laughter ] later biden took on de blasio over the price of medicare for all, claiming it would cost too much even though several candidates have laid out specific detail plans for how they would pay for it. And biden used this line on de blasio. The fact of the matter is that there will be a deductible, it will be a deductible in their paycheck bernie acknowledges it bernie acknowledges 30 trillion has to all be paid i dont know what math you do in new york, i dont know what math you do in california, but i tell you, thats a lot of money seth be careful, because the most common math equation in new york is adding go to f yourself. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause biden also pushed back on criticism of his more moderate plan and busted out one of his old catchphrases what weve got is a public option that, in fact, would allow anybody to buy in. No one has to keep their private insurance, they can buy into this plan, and they can buy into it with a 1,000 deductible and never have to pay more than 8. 5 of their income when they do it. If they dont have any money theyll get in free. So, this idea is a bunch of malarkey seth there it is a bunch of malarkey is joe bidens more cowbell [ laughter ] i love it. But again, it does make him seem a little old its something you expect to hear shouted from atop an oldtimey bicycle. 5 cents for a nickelodeon . Thats a bunch of malarkey [ laughter ] the debate then shifted to criminal justice with a specific focus on bidens record on several bills including the 1994 crime bill. First biden seemed to get confused and gave booker a new title. The fact is that the bills that the president that excuse me that the future president here that the senators talking about seth wait, what . [ laughter ] did he just endorse cory booker . [ laughter ] did he forget that hes also running for president . [ laughter ] oh what, this is a president ial debate oh, im just here to mix it up and have fun its malarkey time [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause lets get malarkeyd then biden actually tried to question bookers record as mayor of newark. It did it not end well for biden. We have a system right now thats broken, and if you want to compare records, and frankly im shocked that you do, i am happy to do that why did you announce in the first day a zero tolerance policy of stop and frisk and hire Rudy Giulianis guy in 2007 when i was trying to get rid of the crack cocaine, sir . Mr. Vice president , theres a thing in my community, youre dipping into koolaid and you dont even know the flavor seth damn. There is no way biden even knows what that means. [ laughter ] because i am 35 years younger than him and i dont know what that means [ laughter ] biden probably took it literally. Koolaid i cant have all that sugar [ laughter ] then finally the debate moved on to the climate crisis. Several candidates have signed on to the Green New Deal the moderators asked senator Kirsten Gillibrand if such an ambitious plan was possible and she busted out this oneliner. You are cosponsor of the Green New Deal which includes the guarantee of a job with medical leave, paid vacations, and Retirement Security for everyone in america. Explain how thats realistic so the first thing that im going to do when im president is im going to clorox the oval office seth okay, first of all, i dont think its legal to use bleach on an active crime scene. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause secondly, youre definitely, definitely going to need something stronger than clorox i would try burning sage or holding a seance youre going to need a belt sander just to get the ketchup stains off the desk. Then it came time for the closing statements, a chance for candidates to direct voters to their websites, to give them a number to text, to join the campaign but when biden had his chance, he seemed to garble it if you agree with me, go to joe 30330. Seth joe 3033 is that the name of your homemade rocket ship [ laughter ] did you just accidentally tell everyone your atm pin number [ laughter ] is this some sort of weird clue . Its like being in an escape room, what does it say under that lamp . Go to joe 3033 we need the clue master clue master it really doesnt work when joe biden tries to seem young and hip. Go to joe 30330 on the World Wide Web hey, you know what, throw a dot com on there if you want [ laughter ] once again, the debate showcased sharp differences in important issues whatever you think of the candidates it was nice to hear ten people speak coherently about actual policies. Meanwhile, trump is probably wandering around the white house, rambling to his aides about how hes going to be president until the year 30330 seth this has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause well be right back with chris hayes, everybody [ cheers and applause announcer for more of seths closer looks be sure to subscribe to late night on youtube. And musical director of blue man chicago at the briar street theater. And this is very cool, two decades after teaching our own fred armisen to play drums for Blue Man Group, he is sitting in for him this week, jeff quay is here, everybody [ cheers and applause thanks for doing a good job. Our first guest tonight is emmy host of all in with chris hayes which airs weeknights at 8pm on msnbc he also hosts the podcast why is this happening . Please welcome back to the show our friend chris hayes, everybody. [ cheers and applause seth thank you for being here for one of our live shows a live show, yeah seth its amazing. Have you ever considered doing your show live [ laughter ] i was joking backstage. I was like, this is a big deal live seth yeah. We do this every night. Seth yeah, you do it every single night every single night you turn it around really fast tonight was a little strange for you because you were doing your show during the first hour of the debate its so weird that weve had this two nights in a row i mean, the first the first time we had the debates on msnbc. Seth right so these ones we did not have theyre only on cnn. Theyre only on the network that gets them. And youre in this sort of youre in the segment and hes like, should we not mention the debate because maybe on the off chance we remind someone its happening and they turn over there seth yeah. [ light laughter ] its kind of dumb, they know. Seth because i feel like, the people who watch your show are obviously invested in politics so it seems like a very small slice of people that would be like invested in politics but also not care about the debate [ light laughter ] well, thank you i like to think of people who invest in politics invest in me. H yea thats true they want to see which is a small number as the ratings show seth but you but obviously you managed to go back you watched the debate, a lot about healthcare tonight yes seth substantive, i think. Sometimes i would imagine for most people a little hard to follow do you feel like the candidates do a good job of laying out what their differences are . In regards to health care . I thought the first night was actually sharper on this because the axis was very clear. It was two people advocating medicare for all single payer, everyone enrolls in one plan. There will be no private plans anymore. Well transition that. And then other people attacking that and i actually think medicare for all, whatever you think about its popularity or workability, it is at least it is clear. Seth yes what it is. Right . So people are going to say, well how are you going to pay for it . And i dont know if i want to give up my private Health Insurance. But the sort of lines of debate were clear tonight with these more kind of like half measures about the public option, you have a thousand dollar deductible and 8. 6 of your income, but not if youre you know that gets way, way, way harder to follow. Seth and then it becomes a bit i feel as though the takeaway is whos making the most effective attack on someone else tonight definitely seemed like a night of attacking joe biden is obviously the frontrunner hes going to take those attacks. It seemed like last night they were making delaney the standin for joe biden because he was he was sort of the moderate who was there. And despite polling at 1 he sort of had a starring role. Its really funny, because, obviously the thing that we havent seen yet is you want to see a stage that has harris, buttigieg, biden, warren, and sanders together those are the people who are polling in the top five. And we havent had that. So last night i think what cnn tried to do, and its not a crazy approach to this, is they were like, lets just make someone a biden standin seth yeah. Because we dont have biden here and they were like, whos the guy at the end delaney. Seth yeah. Lets do him. Seth yeah. He was like brad pitt to leonardo in once upon a time in hollywood. [ laughter ] yeah. I havent seen that. Seth its a stuntman joke. [ laughter ] not a lot of people have and then i want to ask about the issue of electability. Obviously this is a question thats coming out right now. And one thing that people ask, is this good for people to be attacking everyone does that weaken a candidate when they go to the general election you could argue certainly in the last election, Hillary Clinton didnt have to go through this sort of trial by a bunch of candidates maybe a little bit with bernie yeah. Seth but it certainly wasnt this not this. Seth do you feel like its good or bad for whoever emerges from this to have been, sort of attacked by, at one point, you know, 22 different other candidates you know, i dont really know that i know the answer to that i mean, in some ways its unavoidable. So what whos to say whether its good or bad its going to happen i mean, you know, politics is about conflict and i think what i would say about the first four debates in the Democratic Party is they have been substantive. Like, people do disagree about whether we should have single payer system or not. There are arguments on both sides that are not like, you know, trivial. Theyre real arguments on both sides. And those need to be hashed out. People disagree about whether we should decriminalize unauthorized entry to the united states, which is currently a criminal misdemeanor, but could be handled as a civil matter there are people on different sides of that. Its good to fight about that stuff. Like, its good to fight about this stuff and its inevitable to fight about stuff seth when we come back, i want to talk to you about the economy how thats being framed in the debate. Be right back with more from chris hayes. [ cheers and applause i knew my son could be at risk of certain cancers later in life. From an infection, Human Papillomavirus i knew widespread hpv is and while hpv clears for most, that might not be the case for him. I knew his risk increases as he gets older. Tell us why it should be you at jimmyjohns. Com. Because sandwich. [ cheers and applause seth welcome back to late night. Were here with chris hayes. I think one thing that donald trump might be counting on is the strength of the economy right now. Yup seth certainly something he talks about a lot. It came up a couple time in the debate asking people on stage. Like, how do you respond to the strong stock market, low unemployment but you actually think the economy could be a good talking point for democrats . Yeah, i mean, if you look at the polling, it is the one issue that hes, you know, 12 points up right . In approval on i think its i think theres a case to be made for democrats to make the case about why this economy isnt actually working for a lot of people. I mean, youve got a trilliondollar tax cut. Youve had huge amounts of stock buybacks. You dont have a lot of Business Investment the fact of the matter is Economic Development continues to be intensely concentrated in a relatively small Geographic Area that was the whole critique against the obama economy back in 2016 when donald trump sort of banged on about that, about bad trade deals. Theres a gm plant that closed this week ten miles from the debate, in warren. In lordstown, ohio, donald trump you should watch this clip. He gets up in front of lordstown and he says to them, this plants not going anywhere dont sell your home dont sell your home dont do anything. But they shut the plant down like, the same structural factors, and then you put on top of that some of the trade war stuff which has hammered a lot of farmers i think theres a case to be made about why the trump economy is not as good as it looks for a lot of working people, and i would like to see democrats make that case. Seth and why do you think it is that its not something theyve picked up on yet i think you see them try to start to make it, but what ends up happening in these debates, particularly, is theyre competing with each other. So, theyre focused on areas where they have areas of agreement or disagreement or attacks. I do think that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and joe biden, to some extent when biden talked about the auto rescue tonight, when he was asked the question, how are you gonna win michigan . He talked about the auto rescue. Which is a good thing to do because the auto rescue was amazingly important effective piece of policy intervention that saved tens of thousands of jobs across the greater midwest. Seth Climate Change came up tonight as well. This is an issue youre going to do a special on. Yeah, were doing a twoday forum with as many candidates as we can get seth and how i imagine preparing for that must be difficult in that the breadth of things you have to talk about when youre talking about the climate is so vast it is its a hard thing to sort of zero in on its also hard sort of to move between the specialized vocabulary of people that are in the world of Climate Policy or climate activism and what the broader public knows so, i think it takes a lot of work to get really good conversations going on that. A lot of times also politicians just dont know that much about it, frankly. Like, they know the briefing book i mean, jay inslee is an exception. I did a podcast with him, why is this happening, where we talked for an hour about this stuff. This is what hes running on but a lot of them, you know, they cant get too far out past their briefing book on it. Thats not the case in something like, for instance, criminal justice reform, immigration, or health care. All are issues i feel that the majority of candidates have more facility with than at this point they do Climate Policy seth and do you think that part of that too is just the massiveness of the undertaking to fix where the climate is heading . Did you hear the andrew yang answer tonight andrew yang was asked about climate, and he said, oh, probably not going to fix it, youre going to need to move your family to Higher Ground so were giving you 1,000 a month. [ laughter ] oh thats bleak, buddy. Seth that was real bleak, yeah because he had some nice moments tonight but that was a tough one. But, you know, it was bleak i dont think 1,000 a month is going to do it if you need to go to Higher Ground but what i did think about that is that it did puncture a little bit of the kind of like, we can do it, we can do it being cleareyed about what were up against right now is really important and its very hard to do that and balance that with the kind of hopefulness that is necessary to kind of motivate people and sort of put together a coalition you need seth youve never moderated a debate you would like to. It seems to be an impossible undertaking. It is one of the it is an impossible job that i would love to have. Really, it is impossible i know you watch a debate, you watch people on twitter or you talk to family members who are very critical of how the debate is managed. Which just goes with the territory. Seth of course with that many people on stage. You have ten people on stage, you know youre trying to be fair in distributing talking time. Politicians talk long. Its hard to get fruitful exchanges. Its hard to cut people off. And then when things go long, like how some people were complaining about how long the cnn debate went, but its like, well its either going to go long or theyre going to cut them off more. Right . Seth yeah. Or you do fewer topics. If you do fewer topics then people say, oh you didnt get this topic, this topic, this topic. So a huge part of the challenge, particularly at this point in the cycle, is just managing that many people on stage youve got a choirs worth of people that youve got to deal with i think later on if youve got four or five people, you can get some of them seth and that will happen one day . Right . Itll get down to four or five [ laughter ] yes, i think so seth okay, good. Whats really interesting to me is whats the over under of the number of people still in it by february 6th or whenever the iowa caucuss happen seth yeah. Eight. Eight seth yeah, over under is eight. I think somewhere around ten, probably is probably the answer seth well come back then lets talk about it. Thanks so much for coming here yeah, thank you seth middle of the night chris hayes, everybody all in with chris hayes airs weeknights at 8pm on msnbc well be right back with Charlamagne Tha God. [ cheers and applause seth our next guest tonight hosts the nationally syndicated radio show the Breakfast Club and his book shook one is available now. Please welcome to the show Charlamagne Tha God. [ cheers and applause seth thank you so much for being here thank you for having me, man. This is late night late night. Seth this is late night late night. [ laughter ] yeah, like tomorrow seth really [ laughter ] i should really stress, you have a show at 6 00 a. M tomorrow yeah, i got to be up at 4 20 in the morning. Seth wow and thats at every day, 4 20 . Yes and you know my phone usually tells me to get ready for bed around 8 00. Because i should be in bed by 8 20 to get eight hours of sleep. That never happens but its the thought that counts. Seth all right [ light laughter ] thats good. Your show the Breakfast Club, you have people from all walks of life on your show and this year, it has become a stop for a lot of the candidates yes seth youve had harris, sanders, booker. Booker, warren, williamson. Seth anybody surprise you . Anybody different than what you expected when they came in i mean, i didnt have any expectations of any of them to be honest with you seth yeah. Thats helpful [ light laughter ] and i think thats the best way to approach it when it comes to politicians go in with no expectations seth yeah. You know, because if you have an expectation, youll probably get let down [ laughter ] so if you have no expectations, then youll be like hes not as bad as they say politicians are. [ laughter ] seth yeah, thats good you just look at it as a macro like politicians there you go. There you go seth and i imagine that when theyre on their show you get to talk to them about things that they are maybe not talking about other places and introduce them to an audience that they not so you probably provide great value. Well the best thing for me is im not a political pundit like im actually stupid when it comes to politics. I dont know anything. [ laughter ] im just like a private citizen that has a vote. So im talking from the perspective of, you know, why i would vote for you thats it. Seth yeah. Simple. Nothing else i dont have any invested interest in any one party, nothing. Seth that must be nice for them well, you know what, let me rephrase that. I will vote liberal this year. Okay and i have voted [ cheers and applause and ive voted liberal the only other two times i voted or three times. Seth youre three for three. Yes seth i want to ask, this is your second book and you wrote this book only 18 months after your first book. Which was a bestseller the New York Times bestseller seth New York Times bestseller i mean it could be a bestseller at, you know seth yeah. [ cheers and applause a pharmacy somewhere. Seth yeah, yeah, you want to make sure. New York Times Bestseller wanted to say, you know. Seth and did you have a plan after your first book to turn around 18 months later and launch the second one . No, you know, how it is have you ever put a book out seth no i havent. That would seth so i dont know how it is yeah yeah, exactly [ laughter ] but you know, theyll push you to do a second book but i really wasnt in a rush to do a second book because i dont do things for money. So you know, i dont want to do things unless i got something to say. And so i started going to therapy to, like, deal with anxiety and my ptsd and my bouts of depression. And then you know how it when is you go to therapy, like, you sitting there talking to your therapist, and theyre peeling back layers of all kind of stuff in your life, and youre in there crying about your father, and you didnt know that you hated your father but you really love your father but she makes you feel like you hate him [ laughter ] and so its just like, i started keeping a journal of everything that was going on in therapy and then i got with a doctor named dr. Ish. Because what i was trying to do was translate what i was experiencing in therapy. But what she was really making me do is just understand what i was feeling so i would be able to explain my feelings but when it came to the clinical correlations, i got a doctor, named dr. Ish, to do that. And it just became the pages in that book. Seth and so youre very open and honest about your anxiety and depression you also talk about how theres a real negative stigma about issues like that in the black community. Did you feel like it was really important for you to to have that honesty with your readers in this case yeah, i mean, for me, man, its the the easiest thing in the world is to be myself. You know what im saying like i cant front like right now im tired as hell [ laughter ] and so i had to say that because i feel like yall are looking at me and looking like, he really looks tired. But really [ laughter ] thats just my probably anxiety. [ laughter ] seth we mentioned all the, you know, Democratic Candidates youve had on the show have you had conservative candidates, conservative pundits on your show do you like talking to people like that . We sometimes have trouble having them come on the show, because they want to talk about everything but donald trump. They dont want to defend him and obviously its something wed like to how hard to defend that guy at this point. Seth yeah. Tough job seth its very hard for us to have people on who want to support his Party Without talking about him. Because it seems a little unfair to divorce the two yeah, you know whats so sad about life, man. A lot of us just cant admit we made a mistake know what im saying and thats how i feel what a lot of Trump Supporters are. They just dont want to admit they made a mistake. Its okay, do better next year seth yeah, there you go. [ laughter ] but i just i just i just feel like, you know, its not enough honest conversation going on like i watching the debate tonight and i was glad that, you know, cory booker brought up the fact that, you know, they have said that it was russian interference in our elections. Because me as a voter, im like, okay, in 2020, how are we going to know that the voting process is fair with all this rampant Voter Suppression going on and the fact that we know it was russian interference like how do we know the fights not fixed . You know so thats im glad he brought that up. Seth you had, i think, donkey of the day on you show. Yes, thats where i give people the credit they deserve to being stupid. [ light laughter ] i kind of feel like that right now for agreeing to do this show at one in the morning. [ laughter ] seth wait, do you think do you think you might be tomorrows donkey of the day i dont know. And if i yawn right now, it has nothing to do with you [ laughter ] seth i feel better when people yawn during the live shows. I really do appreciate you making the time. Thanks for having me. Seth i think its great. The platform you have, and its really wonderful what about donkey of the day . You just wanted to bring that up seth well i was gonna say, did you see anything in the debates that made you think did you see any potential donkey of the days there . No, i mean, i was just disappointed in a couple of the candidates, you know what im saying i feel like senator harris dropped the ball a little bit tonight. Seth yep joe biden, i just i just dont think hes good at debating [ laughter ] i think i think like he wants to be president without doing the work like in my first book, black privilege, i have this i have this rule called, put the weed in the bag. Seth yeah. And its all about the process, you know what im saying like, you cant skip the process. Like, you know theres this movie called belly, where these two kids were sitting down with the two stars of the movie, dmx and nas, and they was like, yo i want to go out there and get money. I want to go out there and get money. And dmx was like, man, shut up and put the weed in the bag first. So that means you cant escape the process. I dont think joe wants to put the weed in the bag. He just wants to go out there and sell the weed. Seth thats an excellent point. Charlamagne tha god, everybody shook one anxiety playing tricks on me is available in book stores. Well be right back. [ cheers and applause ill. Im on the pill. Im on the pill. Im on the pill, too. But its not birth control. Its truvada for prep®, a oncedaily prescription medicine for adults that, when taken every day along with using safer sex practices, can help lower my chances of getting hiv through sex. She also told me that truvada alone may not keep me from getting hiv. And it does not prevent other stis or pregnancy. You must be hivnegative to take truvada for prep. So you need to get tested for hiv immediately before, and at least every 3 months while taking, truvada. If you think you were exposed to hiv or have flulike symptoms, tell your doctor right away. They may do more tests to confirm you are still hivnegative. Serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems, kidney failure, and bone problems, which may lead to fractures. Rare, lifethreatening side effects include a buildup of lactic acid and liver problems. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis.
