Its after 8 00 and its still 87 degrees outside in walnut creek. The heat made a big comeback in our inland valleys today. Heres the interesting part of the forecast, weakening Tropical Storm to the south and look how the moisture is already on approach to Southern California. This will be bringing increasing humidity and a slight chance of showers and maybe isolated thunder for parts of the area. Thank you. Crews in Contra Costa County were able to quickly put out a brushfire in antioch. Flames sparked along wilber and marie avenue this afternoon. Firefighters say that fire threatened several homes but fortunately the flames only burned about two acres. Near gilroy, a 35 acre fire was sparked this afternoon, and cal fire says the flames have been contained. Fires like these have crews working to clear oupt brush. And the Santa Cruz Mountains, they are creating a fire break. Governor gavin newsom allotted 2 million for the project, and Marianne Favro has the details. Reporter that work is going to start tomorrow morning at 9 00, and first they are going to have a training session, and then crews will get right to work clearing out the debris and grass. When the loma fire swept through the Santa Cruz Mountains in 2016, the flames scorched more than 4,000 acres and destroyed 12 homes, which is why dennis is relieved work on a new fire break along highway 17 is set to begin tomorrow. Just take a look at paradise and what happened up there and really and truly at the end of the day, their problem is because nobody has cleared the woods up there in 50, 75 years, and we have the same problem here. The fire break will run along highway 17 from los gatos to summit road, and the goal is to clear out brush 150 feet from the edge of the highway, thinning small trees, removing shrubs and hauling out deadwood but leaving the big trees. A firefighter with the Volunteer Fire Department says often people driving on highway 17 experience a car fire and pull over near the dry brush, igniting it. He says the new fire break should help firefighters efforts to protect the community. Just being able to control fires easier, and prevent a lot of the car fires that do happen on 17, and the cigarette butts out the window and everything else, if all that brush is cleared back it makes our job easier. Highway 17 is the main way for people to escape a fire in the mountains, and its making sure thats a viable option in the midst of a fire. Theres a chance some sections of highway 17 will need to be shutdown temporarily while that work is completed. Reporting live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. You have a brushfire erupting in Southern California tonight. Right now mandatory evacuations are in place near glendale and the 134 freeway is shutdown in both directions, and you can see heavy smoke and flames just feet from the road, dangerously close to homes. Flames started about 4 30 this afternoon, and the fire has burned at least 25 acres so far. An Early Morning trip to check on fishing gear ended in tragedy this weekend in Contra Costa County, and two men went out fishing just around discovery by, and the inflatable raft they were in popped and one man swam to shore and the other man did not make it. People who live nearby spoke about their concern for the victim. I thought perhaps it was a Training Mission because i saw them every 30 minutes or so circlinack and forth, so it was hard for me to learn that there was somebody in dire need. The search for crews has become a recovery effort to find his body and the coast guard said the men did not have life jackets with them. One person is dead after a headon crash near american avenue in brentwood. Investigators say the driver of this silver Nissan Altima was going eastbound and hit a minivan headon after trying to pass another car. The driver of the altima died at the scene and the driver of the minivan was taken to the hospital but not seriously hurt. And witnesses described what happened moments before that deadly crash. A silver nissan was going eastbound behind me at a high rate of speed, and hit me and swerved into the other lane and hit the toyota van headon. I am so sorry. Poor man. I am sorry for his family, and its traumatizing to see Something Like this. Police shall still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were factors in this deadly crash. A popular south bay open space remains closed after some Mountain Lion activity. Hundreds of people were turned away from the park today. Rangers were at the entrance letting people know that a family of Mountain Lions have been prowling the trails and getting dangerously close to people. You see them here. They are not acting normal. Mountain lions are not unusual for the area, and these cats do not appear to be afraid of people. Its for the safety of themselves and the animals in the park, and again we appreciate their patience while we work through this process. Rangers are monitoring Mountain Lion behavior, and they recommend checking the parks website to see when that park is back open. A flight to hawaii out of sfo only got onethird of the way before pilots had to turn around. Pilots returned to San Francisco this afternoon because of a mechanical issue. United said the plane landed safely and passengers were put on a new plane with a new crew. We reached out for more information. Police officer makes a call saying he was shot by a sniper in los angeles sheriffs parking lot setting off a massive manhunt for the shooter, and now its all a hoax. The deputy was frantic. The call . He was under fire. A snyder, iper taking aim from Apartment Building. They locked down this Apartment Building and a nearby school for hours. The deputy was rushed to the hospital. He fortunately was wearing a vest, and the vest saved his life, but the bullet did deflect into his shoulder. The only thing . There was no wound. There was no shooter. Turns out the deputy made the whole thing up. The reported sniper assault was fabricated by the deputy. The Department Said he eventually confessed, the two bullet holes in his uniform. We are not getting the ocean airconditioning, and obviously San Francisco, oakland and hayward, you are seeing the cooling but you are not seeing it inland at this hour. Again, a weak breeze out of the west and into the inland east bay. For the morning, patchy fog and low clouds. Inland temperatures are going to be in the 60s, and hilltop temperatures in the east bay may be in the 70s tomorrow morning. Cloud cover wise, not much inland. Most of the clouds we do see will be out on the coast, as we see tomorrows temperatures rising, similar to today but likely the south bay starts to trend hotter. We had mid90s in morgan hill today, and 97 tomorrow, and downtown san jose close to 90 degrees. Similar temperatures to what we saw today in the trivalley, and up in the peninsula temperatures, 60s and 70s, and San Francisco, at least just south of downtown should see 70s, 60s on the beaches and out towards the north bay, highs in the mid80s to 90s. High pressure started to strengthen today and should peak around monday and tuesday, but the item to watch, and fortunately its an increase in humidity, and the Tropical Storm is falling apart, and look at the moisture streaming northward towards Southern California and eventually towards the bay area. Right now the future cast is not painting any measurable rain, but you see the green offshore and thats going to be a surge of extra mugginess and humidity, and highs in the 90s, so it will feel comfortable outside. Notice the future cast doesnt have any measurable rainfall, but we are not out of the woods. Sometimes the patterns can create dry lightning, and that means you dont see rain at ground level. Watch out for that tuesday. As you see the temperatures warm to start the week. Spare the air day, too, for the east bay, and you could see another one on tuesday but the humidity will get peoples attention, and we will have to look for scattered showers and dry lightning. We should see low clouds we are seeing now in San Francisco, locally in the morning but staying along the coastline for the afternoon. Valleys set to climb with the temperatures once again, and the morning, not all that cold, upper 50s bay side. Look at our temperatures tomorrow. The trend will be upper 90s for those east bay valleys, and may see close to 100 degrees around brentwood for tomorrow. Ukiah, 100 degrees. And close to 80 in oakland. High pressure peaking as we get into tomorrow and as you see the band of high clouds in the south, thats what is left of the Tropical Storm that is no longer with us but the moisture associated with it has made a run to the north up to the coast of Southern California. You see that big blob of green, and thats mid level moisture. Thats the sticky feeling you will have in the air as you get into tuesday and wednesday. Look how it surges up the coast. This is combined with future cast, and we are not seeing showers or measurable rainfall, and by bay area standards, when the dew point temperatures get into the 60s like we think they will on wednesday, that will feel like the tropics outside. Right now unfortunately, it looks like we might see some thunderstorms around the sierra, at least enough with rainfall which would be a good thing. A lot of times at the mid level moisture, you have to watch out for lightning without enough rain to wet the ground. Another model indicates, the gfs model shows inland shower activity on tuesday. It will be humid, but we cant rule out a chance of a shower. A warm start to the week, and muggy outside, and temperatures in the 60s at night, and even as the numbers drop into the low 90s on tuesday, i think tuesday may be the more uncome ffortabl day as the humidity picks up around the bay area.
