Across town, an 8yearold is killed by gunfire. Defeat down under. The u. S. Mens Basketball Team falls to australia. The first loss in the Major International tournament in nearly 13 years. And paradise bound. A town rallies around the High School Football team playing its first game since the community was wiped out by the devastating wildfires. A new reason to cheer today, saturday, august 24th, 2019. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with sheinelle joins and Peter Alexander and dylan dreyer. From studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today. Thanks for joining us. Kristen welker is here while sheinelle has the week off. How about the story from california . Players prove paradise is not lost. Incredible to see it. Well have the story in a moment. Lets get to the top story. That is President Trump arriving in france this morning for the g7 summit with the worlds biggest economic powers. President locked in a fierce battle with china over trade a day after declaring the chairman of the Federal Reserve is the enemy. Kelly yoodonnell is in france traveling with the president. Reporter good morning, peter. This is no vacation. President trump is fired up over trade and more than ready to tangle with other World Leaders of the he insisted the summit added about the global when when the agenda had planned to focus on climate, iran and inequality. Overnight journey for President Trump. His trip to france and the g7 summit fueled by new tension with china over trade. Hitting beijing with another round of higher tariffs to counter their retaliation. The president spoke before leaving the white house. Were having a spat with china. Well win it. We put a lot of tariffs on china today. As you know, they put some on us. Reporter on twitter, the president announced that tariffs on chinese goods will increase by another 5 . Taking effect in september and october. The president also claimed he has the authority to tell private u. S. Companies to find new suppliers other than china. Tweeting at midnight try looking at the emergency economic powers act of 1977. Case closed. Referring to a president s power to regulate International Commerce after an extraordinary threat to the nation by declaring an emergency, which mr. Trump has not done. I have the absolute right to do that. Reporter the president also Federal Reserve chairman. The dow down more than 600 points. Im not happy with jay well. I dont think he is doing a good job at all. I dont think he is much of a chess player. Reporter p the leaders of seven nation democratic economies will come together. President trump said he is looking forward to being in france, but also warned host Emmanuel Macron about france taxing u. S. Technology giants. I dont want france going out and taxing our companies. Very unfair. If they do that, we will tax their wine or doing something else. Kelly, punctuating another headline from the last week. We learned that President Trump spoke to denmarks Prime Minister by phone friday. The first time speak since he canceled his trip there among the backlash over the interest of buying greenland. What more do we know . Reporter well, the president asked about this before he left for his trip here to france. He described it as a great conversation. Maybe, peter, that is trying to diffuse the tension. He also earlier referred to the Prime Minister as a nasty woman for her comments about his desire to buy greenland. Maybe trying to tamp that down. Denmark is not participating in the g7. The way for the president to send a signal he is calming things down on that front. Cancelling the trip for the end of the minuonth is a sore point. And may be good before meeting other leaders here. The comments about wine and france and possibly taxing it got attention from the European Union. If President Trump plans to tax french wine, they will respond. Peter. Kelly traveling with the president in france. Thank you. Lets bring in john harwood who covers washington. Thank you for being here. Lets take a step back at the remarkable day we witnessed. Dow closed down 600 points. President trump talking tough on tariffs. On the other hand, john, he is sending out tweets mocking and making fun of the market downturn. What is the impact of this uncertainty . It is fueling doubts about the course of the global economy. It is not rational. Yesterday, after jay powell gave his speech, markets reacted calmly. Markets did not react to china imposing the titfortat tariffs on the United States. The president impulsively lashing out on twitter against powell and against china with that unusual statement that he claimed the power to order American Companies to act. That was destabilizing and sent the market down 600 points for the day. The additional tariffs he put on late in the day are likely to drive markets down over the weekend when they open on monday. This is not good for the u. S. Economy. It is not good for the president s chances of winning reelection in 2020. John, lets talk about what you referenced. Extraordinary directive that the president delivered by twitter yesterday. He wrote, our great American Companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for alternative to china including bringing your companies home. The president claims he has the power, the authority to do that. Does he . Well, i suppose if the president were to decide to declare a national emergency, you will find out he would test the limits of his power. As of this moment, nobody takes that statement seriously. The president and rhetoric is extreme and that is completely contrary to how other u. S. President s have served the nation and run the economy. It is odd coming at a time when the Republican Party and President Trump are accusing democrats of socialism and government control of the economy. Where the president is asserting his right to do that. I dont think anyone is expecting the president to actually assert those Emergency Powers and test the question. For now we have to wait and see. We certainly will, john. Against this back drop of the g7 gets under way. U. S. Allies are concerned of this escalating trade war. Fears of potential global recession. Some leaders will downplay the issues with donald trump. What can we expect to come of this summit, john . Not much. I think the best hope, kristen is no further damage is done. The president has a penchant for blowing up International Gatherings with the disruptive statements and lashing out at people he thinks are not sufficient to him and to the United States. With much of the world slowing, growth is also slowing in the United States. Most Economic Forecasters put chances of a recession in 2020 around 50 . Those fears go up if the market continues to tank because that has a self fulfilling prophecy. More problems around the world means more problems within the United States. The United States cant afford to have an economic downturn. Allrconnected. John, thank you so much for your insights. And another topic likely to get another attention at the g7, the devastating wildfires burning across the amazon in brazil we just showed you, as we await the president s arrival there stepping off the tarmac momentarily. The Worlds Largest rain forest which some describe as the planets lungs produce 20 of the earths oxygen and protesters around the world are demonstrating, in front of brazilians embassy, urging that countrys leaders to do more to stop the fires. Nbc sara harmon has more. Good morning. Reporter peter, good morning. This morning, brazils armed forces will start deploying to the amazon. After the president took the rare step of authorizing the military to help. This Environmental Crisis is fast becoming a political one as well. Europe is threatening punitive measures, if brazil doesnt get this blaze under control. Its still burning. For weeks now, the amazon rain forest, one of earths most valuable resources, has been ravaged by fires. Tromti prompting protests in brazil and around the world. From mexico city. To berlin. To paris. And london. What do we want . Brazils president , bolsonaro announcing he will send in the military to fight the fires but environmentalists blame his policies for encouraging the destruction. A claim he denies. He is under growing pressure from europe to act. French president emanuel macron today hosting the g7 summit accused him of not doing enough and threatening to scrap a huge trade deal between the European Union and south america. Finland is calling on the eu to consider banning brazilian beef imports. President trump taking a different tone, tweeting, just spoke with president bolsonaro of brazil, our future trade prospects are very exciting and our relationship is strong, perhaps stronger than ever before. The amazon is home to three million plant and animal species. And the rain forest produces 20 of the earths oxygen. Helping to slow Global Warming by absorbing millions of tons of Carbon Emissions each year. A role now under threat. Theres a secondary concern here as well. Air quality. Scientists say these fires release large quantities of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere and thats not good for our planet. Frightening pictures from that region. Sarah, thank you. This morning, Supreme CourtJustice Ruth Bader ginsburg is said to be doing well after completing a new cancer treatment. Its the second time in less than a year that she has battled and won against the disease. More now from justice correspondent pete williams. Reporter the Supreme Court says Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg intends to remain active after receiving three weeks of radiation treatment for a tumor on her pancreas. The court says it was detected in early july and she began the treatment august 5, as an outpatient, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in new york. The Court Statement says she tolerated the treatment well, the tumor was treated definitively, and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in her body. Medical experts say the goal was to completely eliminate the tumor. She will likely have multiple scans and blood tests after completion of therapy to assess response to the treatment and see how the therapy went. Reporter she had surgery for pancreatic cancer ten years ago and treated for colon cancer. In december, she had part of her lungs removed after doctors found three cancerous spots. While she was getting this latest treatment, she met the cast backstage at a broadway play, and met Kate Mckinnen of saturday night live who sometimes plays a version of the justice. After the latest cancer was discovered, ginsburg says she will stay on the court as long as she is able. You have to take it year by year. I know im okay, i was okay this last term, i expect to be okay next term, and after that, well just have to see. Justice ginsburg, who is 86, has nearly a dozen Public Events on her calendar for next month, and the court says she is not canceled any of them. For today, pete williams, nbc news, washington. Now to a florida jury that has decided the fate of a white man who shot and killed an unarmed black man during an argument that started over a parking space. Nbc has the reaction to the guilty verdict. Good morning. Reporter this was a decision that definitely did not come easy. The jury deliberated well into the night before finding Michael Drejka guilty reigniting a National Debate over stand your ground laws and we do want to warn you, some of the video you are about to see is disturbing. The defendant is guilty of manslaughter as charged. This morning, Michael Drejka is in custody, after a jury convicted him of manslaughter late friday in the death of markeis mcglockton. Were thankful that the jury got it right. Were thankful that the jury saw what we saw, saw what everybody saw in that video. Reporter the video of the fatal parking lot confrontation, the key piece of evence in the threeday trial. I submit to you he is a parking lot vigilante. Reporter jurors saw this taped interview with detectives, where drejka described the moment he drew his gun after being pushed to the ground by mcglockton the argument stemming from the misuse of a Handicapped Parking spot. He stepped toward me and that was that. Reporter mcglocktons girlfriend sharing from the stand as drejka began harassing as she waited with her children inside a parked car. I didnt know who this strange man was, he was yelling and pointing and telling me where i should park. Reporter it was when mcglockton came out that the incident escalated. Initially drejka was not arrested because of floridas stand your ground law which allows a person to use deadly force against a threat with no requirement to retreat. He did what he thought he had to do in the moment and split second timing, given that he was attacked. Reporter after more than six hours of deliberation, the jury found drejka guilty. Although we know that there are some appeal issues, we will deal with that on the back end, but for right now, the jurors of the county have spoken and we respect their decision. For the family of markeis mcglockton the decision brought about closure. My family can rest now and start putting the pieces back together and move on. Are there any next steps for drejka and the legal team before he is sentenced here . Reporter we did hear from drejkas legal team after the verdict last night. They say they do plan to appeal. Meanwhile, his sentencing is set for october, and drejka does face a maximum of up to 30 years in prison. Morgan, thanks. New information this morning about the suicide of a accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. On friday the department of justice sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee acknowledging that a psychologist took epstein off suicide watch shortly before he took his own life. Attorney general william barr removed the acting director of the federal prison system after epsteins death. Investigators are revealing new details on what caused Dale Earnhardt jr. s plane to crash. The right landing gear collapsed and the wing hit the runway as that plane bounced three times upon landing last week. Earnhardt, his wife, their baby, plus the two pilots, all fortunately escaped serious injury. Despite bruising and swelling on his back, the semiretired nascar driver plans to race against next saturday. Look at that. The fact that they got out okay is amazing. Incredible. And hes going to race next saturday. Im glad he is good. We will be watching indeed. Dylan has a check of the forecast. Dylan, how is the weekend looking . The weekend is looking fantastic for most areas except down near florida where a tropical type system is now making its way onshore. And its tropical in nature. So while it could possibly develop into Something Like a tropical disturbance or a Tropical Storm over the next couple of days, for right now, it is just producing a lot of rain, down across the miami area, and will eventually bring some of that rain through the southeast as well. Eventually it will take this turn to the northeast and there is again a 90 chance it could develop into an actual tropical named storm, as we go into the next five days, because water temperatures are so warm. But no matter what happens, for right now, we are going to see this bring a lot of rain to areas like miami, which is already experiencing its third wettest summer on record. This will continue to make its turn to the northeast. Some of those outer bands produce tropicallike downpours through South Carolina, through the coast of georgia, through the coast of northern florida, too and the storm stays mostly out of the waters. And once it takes the turn, it will no longer be a threat to land. Watch out for rip currents at the beaches. One to two inches of rain. But because it is tropical in nature, some of the downpours could be leading to brief flooding as they fall in a short period of time. Another disturbance, invest 99l, over the next five days there is a 70 chance it could develop into something as it moves over ideal conditions and good saturday morning to you. Clear skies in san jose to start the morning. A different view in San Francisco. Mist and low clouds. Currently 60 degrees. Upper 50s elsewhere. This afternoon valleys upper 80s and low 90s. The trend for the weekend, a bit warmer. Low 70s for tomorrow, mid70s by monday. And look at the valleys, heating up again monday and tuesday highs back into the upper 90s. Thats your latest forecast. Dylan, thank you. Still to come right here, a special prosecutor named in the Jussie Smollett case. Could the former empire star who claimed he is a victim of a hate crime face a new indictment . Plus bison on the loose. A big scare and the dented rental care for some vacationers in Yellowstone National park. Thats c om we are back on this satury morning with our weekly download a look back at the week that was. Among the stories we covered, Law Enforcement taking action to prevent some potential mass shooting attacks. People across the country arrested. After allegedly threatening to carry out mass shooting attacks. Among them, a 15yearold girl in fresno, accused of sending a snapchat message, warning students not to come to school. In indianapolis, a man allegedly threatened to shoot up a church. A maryland man, Authorities Say praised hitler, and promised to kill hispanics. And a 15yearold in florida who vowed in a chat room to bring a gun to school, and kill seven people at a minimum. His mother saying it was a joke. He is still a little boy. He is not one of the crazy ones to do this stuff. A terrifying plane crash in california. The airplane just shut itself off. Its on fire. Gully engulfed. The jet aborted takeoff. Sliding off the runway. And catching fire. All ten people on board were able to escape. New fallout following the suicide of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Prince andrew who was friendly with epstein denying any knowledge of wrongdoing, with Buckingham Palace releasing this statement. His Royal Highness supports the exploitation, any human being and the suggestion he would suggest, condone, or encourage any such behavior is abhorrent. For the first time in 14 years divers went to the ocean floor to see the wreck of the titanic and they discovered its disappearance. Scientists say it is now covered in bacteria. Threatening to turn this ships 50,000 tons of iron into powder. A serial wedding crasher posing as a guest has now hit several weddings in the san antonio area, walking away with money and gifts. Authorities may be closing in on the crasher, she was spotted on Surveillance Video using stolen gift cards. The wild moments caught on camera. A bus racing at a track in indiana barreled out of control toward fans and thankfully a fence caught it just in time. A family vai casing in Yellowstone National park got caught in the middle of a bison stampede. And two men in South Carolina went on a wild ride, when strong winds uprooted a tent, throwing one of the nearly, one of them nearly 15 feet in the air. He escaped with minor injuries. And finally when you issue a challenge, better know the competition, a 7yearold break dancer started a danceoff not knowing that the Denver Police officer had some skills of his own. Impressive. Thats amazing. Amazing all around. Can we go back to the bison for a second, when you hear the bison hit that car, you sort of feel it in your chest. You do. And i said it earlier this week, i dont know why the bison didnt watch out for the car. I dont know why he chose to run into the car. Unafraid. The voice in the car, oh, man, there goes the money. When they got whacked, they didnt have insurance on the rental car. Yes. Still to come on today, trees of life, a new spot for a final resting place, while saving the forest at the same time. Friday night lights filled with emotion. Hundreds of people packed football field in a town trying to rise from the ashes of the deadliest fire in california history. Of course that town is paradise. Last night it was High School Varsity playing it first real home game since the camp fire. About 3,000 people packed the stadium cheering a team that has been through a lot. Almost everyone on the field lost their home in the fire so last nights game meant a lot to the players and fans. This is home. And because were all living in so many different places, and football is as to important to our community, to be able to all come together. It was emotional knowing that this could have all been gone, you know. And the resilience of these kids. The opposing team did something pretty remarkable, they donated their lunch money from the entire week for the team showing that this community is all together. The San Jose Police department is making history for the first time ever, their police chief raised the rainbow flag over his department. The Community Leaders say there was a time when the police doors were closed to the lgbtq community. Chief garcia says that the department doesnt ask officers to check their identity at the door when they put on their uniform. Coming up this morning on today in the bay, a car crash sparked a fire and blackout in the south bay. The hidden dangers that crews had to stop supfrom spreading. Frsz always love that sound. Back on this saturday morning, august 24, 2019. A year from today, we are going to be celebrating the start of the paralympics in tokyo. A little bit later this morning, we are going to introduce to you this woman, she is one of the most decorated para olympians in u. S. History, jessica long, a superstar in the pool. Hard to believe its a year away. Coming quick. Coming quick. A great crowd outside. We will check in later. Lets begin this half hour with a check of the headlines. President trump has touched down in france to attend the g7 summit, the worlds top democratic economic powers will talk trade in the middle of a widening tariff fight between the u. S. And china. The president announcing on friday that he is levying new taxes on chinese goods and also demanding that the u. S. Companies leave china. Hours earlier, china announced its own tariffs, stocks plunged more than 600 points on the news. Breaking overnight, iran announced it has testfired a new missile. Tensions have risen between the u. S. And iran ever since the Trump Administration pulled out of the iran nuclear deal. Iran shot down a u. S. Drone in june. Meantime, north korea fired two missiles into the sea today. The North Koreans have complained about the u. S. Military exercises there with south korea. Tragedy and panic at two different st. Louis high schools. Frightened students ran from a football jamboree after hearing reports that shots were fired friday night. Police say multiple fights broke out during the jamboree and the event was canceled. At the same time, a deadly shooting happened at another st. Louis high school jamboree, an 8yearold girl was killed. Two teenaged boys and an adult who were with her were shot and wounded. Police are asking the public to come forward with information. A shocker down under. Here is something we havent said in 13 years. The u. S. Mens Basketball Team lost. It happened earlier today to australia. The aussies rallying to beat the americans 9894. The first time the u. S. Mens team has lost in a Major International competition in 78 games. Thats nearly 13 years, the basketball world cup, by the way, begins next week. And now, to a new turn in the Jussie Smollett case. A special prosecutor has been named to look into why prosecutors dropped charges against the former empire actor to claim he was a victim of a hate crime but then was accused of making the whole thing up. Nbcs ron mott has the story. Reporter the big question this morning, could actor Jussie Smollett face new charges . A chicago judge has named former u. S. Attorney dan webb to look into how local prosecutors handled the case. He thinks the Public Confidence in criminal justice has been affected and i intend to move quickly. Webb says he will likely call a grand jury and issue subpoenas and interview key witnesses before submitting a report. He also has the authority to file new charges if warranted. The facts will take me where they take me. In january, smollett, who is gay, told police he was the victim of a racist homophobic attack but police later say the former empire actor staged it for publicity. Jussie smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career. Smollett has always maintained it was real. Prosecutors charged him with 16 counts of Disorderly Conduct for allegedly orchestrating the incident but a month later abruptly dropped all of the charges with little explanation angering city officials. This is without a doubt a whitewash of justice and sends an ambiguous message that there is no accountability. At the time, cook county states attorney kim foxx defended her office. I think when people see this one particular case, it feels like an outlier where in fact it is consistent with how we treat people charged with similar instances with the same background. She is pledging full cooperation to the special prosecutor. Smollett is also currently fighting a lawsuit from the city of chicago, to recoup the cost of Police Overtime investigating the case. The latest development, another turn in a reallife drama with potentially criminal consequences. For today, ron mott, nbc news, chicago. Dylan is back now with another look at the forecast this weekend. It is refreshing. Almost falllike. You can tell were getting to the end of august here. We are starting off the day with temperatures in the lower 60s. In chicago, erie, boston, 65 in dc, charleston, west virginia, chilly at 58 degrees. High temperatures will be running about five to almost 15 degrees below average. Highs in chicago, in the 70s. St. Louis, 81. Nashville, 86. A little below average. Raleigh, a high of 73 degrees. Dc, 80. Boston, 73 as well. And then as we go into sunday, the frontal system slides farther to the south and atlanta will be close to ten degrees below average with a high of 81 degrees. And charlotte only 77. Richmond virginia, only 80 degrees, and nashville, 85. Four degrees below average. And going into next week, it stays cooler in the chicago area, cleveland, too and charleston, stays in the low to mid80s. New york, chilly on monday with a high of 73. And chilly, i mean for some, thats just about perfect. And then wednesday, we right now san jose, not too cold outside. Were at 63 with clear skies and eventually upper 80s. 83 san jose, 78 in oakland. And a look at the 7day forecast shows temperatures climbing as get into sunday and monday. San francisco jumps into the mid70s and valleys will see highs climbing into the upper 90s to start the week. Thats your latest forecast. Dylan, thank you very much. And just ahead, nine months after that devastating series of fires that ravaged the town of paradise, california, there was good reason to celebrate last night. The return of High School Football. And he was funny. And i miss him very much. An avid sports fan and lover of the outdoor, janelle struggled to find his final resting place. You could put him in the ocean. You could bury him in a cemetery. And so forth. And neither one of those appealed to me. But there was something about looking up into the treetop and into the sky that felt different and just right. Something that a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, candy gibson, says is a natural alternative to cemeteries. What is so difficult about cemeteries is that its not just a place where you visit thats not as beautiful as you want it, its that this is the last moment you ever spent with this person you love. Thats why he started better place forest. Which buys up land and organizes conservation agreements, to prevent it from being developed. A lot of People Choose redwoods because they can live 700 years or more. Instead of a grave stone, customers choose a tree. And spread the cremated remains of their loved ones, even pets at the base. The dual goal, improve the grieving experience, and protect the environment. Why did you choose trees . Of all things . With a species, when you walk through the forest and put your hand on the tree, and it will be a feeling of groundedness, a feeling of incredible comfort. Better place operates two forests in california. With plans to open more, near seattle, portland, denver, and flagstaff, arizona. To rest among the trees, starts at 2900 and rings of trees for a family can cost as much as 30 grand, based on height and location. Is charging about 3,000 for a tree, is that expensive . Compared to a traditional burial, its a lot less expensive. But its a tree that exists in nature. Well, when youre buying a cemetery plot, youre buying a place to bury. Youre protecting a piece of land that you can bury you or your family there. And were doing the same thing, except that were protecting a forest. And incredibly beautiful place. Its easily rooted in tradition, too. Burying someone near a tree is very common throughout history. It has to do with our belief that after death, there is still life. So it symbolizes sort of regeneration. For janelle, she found the perfect tree for larry. And her whole family. My husband is buried there. I will be buried there. And my dog will be buried there. And i have three more opportunities for burial, and i have told my children that they can have them. A final resting place, in the woods, for a life well lived. For today, nbc news, santa cruz, california. Pretty amazing. Better place forest tells us they have raised 12 million in startup funding. What a great idea that is. It is is for families, for the environment. As opposed to a cemetery and going each year to grieve the loss of a loved one, going to a forest and going to that peaceful place, a great idea. Pretty incredible. No doubt. Coming up, we will introduce you to one of the most decorated paralympic athletes in american history. And one amazing athlete, right after these messages. It is hard to believe for sure. Those games are taking place next august, and will feature International Events for athletes with a range of disabilities. So this morning, were spotlighting one of the most decorated paa olympians in u. S. History, jessica long, a swimming champ who has challenges out of the pool has spurred her success in it. For jessica long, the competition in the pool is only part of the battle. I was born with a condition where i wassing all of the bones in my lower legs. They were amputated when she was 18 months old. I never wanted the fact that i didnt have legs to hold me back. She realized the Swimming Pool leveled the playing field. I always loved the water. A place where i can take off the heavy prosthetic and jump in the water and feel no different and move in a way that i cant always on land. When she was ten years old, that love turned into a passion. As long found the Paralympic Games. I saw people without their arms, and their legs, and it just doesnt seem like i was any different. And for me as a little girl, it really, i mean that changed everything. She dove in head first. And hasnt looked back. From athens in 2004, to beijing, to london. Jessica long and rio. Long has dominated rivals across the globe. Winning 20 medals, 13 of them gold. Making her the second most decorated para olympian in u. S. History. It has been amazing to stop on top of the podium and have my family come and cheer for me and to do things that i never thought i would ever do. I love what the paralympics has given me. Given me this platform. It has given me confidence. It has really changed my life. That life full of improbable twists and turns. Born in russia, long was adopted at 13 months by a family from baltimore. She still trains in the area, and calls it home. This fall, she will begin another exciting chapter in her story. Im getting married in october and im so excited. But with her eyes set on a fifth paralympics, now one year away, shes taking on grueling workouts in and out of the pool. Ready to prove once again she doesnt need legs to stand above the competition. I always have to prove people wrong. I have to prove that i can do it. But now i think my mindset has changed that im proving to people that they can do it, too. So impressive. How amazing is she . You can watch jess can and the other athletes compete a year you from from now on the tokeyo 2020 paralympics, on the networks of nbc, and we will remind you of her name but i think a lot of people will remember her name, we are cheering her on, on all things, that and getting married. Good morning, ready for a fight, President Trump arrives in france for the g7 summit with a warning for the countrys leader all this as he ramped up the trade war with china, and slammed the Federal Reserve and saw the stock market take a nose dive. Were live in france with the latest. Guilty verdict, the driver who shot an unarmed man to death in a dispute over a parking spot and claimed he was standing his ground is convicted of manslaughter by a florida jury. The victims family hailing the verdict. My family can rest now. The shooter now facing decades behind bars. And paradise found. A town rallies around its High School Football team, playing its first game since the community was wiped out by those devastating wildfires. A new reason to cheer today, saturday, august 24, 2019. Weve been married 21 years. Hi, mom. Im here. Today im 50. Happy birthday. Good morning to you. Welcome back to today. On a saturday morning. Just for a moment, about those dance moves, it always fileels better in your head. I will hear from my daughters when we get home. The top story, it is where we start todays news, the president has arrived in france there for the g7 summit with some of the other economic world power players and it comes as the president of course is locked in a fierce battle with china over trade. White house correspondent Kelly Odonnell is in france traveling with the president. Good morning. Reporter good morning, peter. The setting here is serene and its stunning. But will President Trump still be in a fighting mood . The host of the g7, emanuel macron, spoke to the french people this morning, saying that he intends to try to convince World Leaders that this war on commerce is bad for everyone. But it appears that is President Trumps top agenda item. The president and first lady arrived this morning, the trip to france, and the g7 summit, fueled by new tensions with china, over trade. Hitting beijing with another round of higher tariffs, to counter their retaliation. The president spoke before leaving the white house. Were having a little spat with china. And well win it. We put a lot of tariffs on china today, as you know, they put some on us, we put a lot on them. On twitter, the president announced that tariffs on chinese goods will increase by another 5 . Taking effect in september and october. The president also claimed he has the authority to tell private u. S. Companies to find new suppliers other than china. Tweeting at midnight, try looking at the emergency economic powers act of 1977. Case closed. Referring to a president s power to regulate International Commerce, after an extraordinary threat to the nation by declaring an emergency. Which mr. Trump has not done. I have the absolute right to do that. Reporter the president also heaped more criticism on the Federal Reserve chairman, as their conflicting views on the economy sent the stock market on a rollercoaster ride friday, with the dow down more than 600 points. Im not happy with jay powell. I dont think he is doing a good job at all. I dont think he is much of a chess player. Reporter in paris, the leaders of the seven major democratic economies will come together. President trump said he is looking forward to being in france, but also warned host emanuel macron about france taxing u. S. Technology giants. I dont want france going out and taxing our companies. Very unfair. And if they do that, well be taxing their wine, or doing something else. Reporter and that is something they can discuss over lunch. We learned that president macron and President Trump will be dining together today. Also during their time together, the president will have his chance to meet for the first time with boris johnson, in his new role, as the Prime Minister of the united kingdom. And tonight, it will be a world leader dinner, and the focus of that meeting will be international security. Theres a lot on the agenda, and part of certainly how people will judge this, is how these World Leaders get along. Peter, kristen . Kelly odonnell, in france, thank you very much. And turning now to some overnight news out of florida. A verdict in a highlycharged stand your ground case. Michael drejka had been found guilty of manslaughter, for shooting markeis mcglockton to death in a fight over a parking space. Drejka argued that he feared for his life when he drew his gun on the unarmed mcglockton, but the jury looking at video of the confrontation decided that the shooting was not justified. A rescue operation in the arizona desert, a group of 44 hikers needed assistance as temperatures there soared to 112 degrees. Park rangers warned the group from kansas not to go out. Two hikers ultimately needed to be airlifted. Overcome by the heat within an hour of leaving. Several hours later the rest of the group needed water and help to get back down the trail. And now to a story you are really going to like. This is a before and after photo for the ages. This is 5yearold lucy from scotland and her mom jill took a photo of her, which started out with perfectly combed hair and neat bow on top, and a smile to greet the first day of school, but by the end of the day, lucys look was a little less put together, when her mom asked what she did at school during the day, the little girl said nothing much. The picture which has been shared 20,000 times tells a very different story. Looks like she had a very busy first day. At least her white backpack stayed nice and clean. As everybody gets ready to drop off kids at school for the first day, it is not the photo before going to school, it is the one getting back. How about finding a diamond on the grown, crater of diamonds is a state park, there last week, people often go there to hunt for diamonds, they probably dont think they will actually find a big one, look what she found, she sat down to watch a video, about how to find a diamond but when she got there, it actually happened, she looked down and there was a 3. 72 carat yellowstone. Incredible. Thats the kind of hike i would want to go on. And how she spotted that she will save a lucky someone a lot of money on an engagement ring. I would put that right on my hand right away. Well, a ladys hand. I wanted to keep. It i dont care whose hand it is on. Coming up, after losing so much, the town of paradise turns to football. A welcome sight friday night in the town of paradise, california, which was ravaged by wildfires this past fall. Here is a much nicer picture from that community. The High School Football season kicked off there last night, the sign that things are finally getting back to norm until that community, giving them a reason to celebrate. Nbcs Steve Patterson with the joy of friday night lights. Too often, we take for granted the magnificent rhythm of High School Football. Not here. This may look like it is the kickoff to any given game at the start of any given season, but this is a night that means far more than what happens on the field. This is paradise football. A team of now mostly displaced teens, putting the hopes of their hometown on their shoulder pads. Just nine months ago, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history ravaged nearly everything standing here. More than 14,000 homes destroyed. At least 25,000 residents displaced. 86 people killed. Every member of the team impacted. All but three players lost their home. We finally feel put together, i guess, something we havent felt in a long time. Good morning. Welcome bobcats. Last week, paradise high reopened to students, and the english teacher is glad to be back. It is the beating heart of paradise and the fact that everybody is showing up for this game, we are alive. Were still here. The crowd overflowing, sitting anywhere they could, larger than the towns population. Head coach rick prins was set to retire after more than 30 years, but just couldnt leave his team. I told the kids, weve worked hard, overcome a lot of adversity to get to this night, but getting here is not our goal, our goal is to win the game. On this night, for this town stand up. Its the game itself that is the victory. But winning like this is the stuff legends are made of. For today, steve paterson, nbc news. How incredible. What a resilient team. Congratulations to the team. The running back, senior Lucas Hartley was asked what he wants to do when he graduates, he wants to be a firefighter. Thats incredible. Powerful stories from there. Dylan out on the plaza right now with a check of the forecast. Dylan . Good morning, guys. Dare i say, its a little chilly out here this morning. I havent experienced this in a while. Number one fan. Happy birthday, chloe, however old youre turning. And thank you very much for being here. Youre my girl. Thank you. Did you guys hear that, im her girl. Lets take a look at what is going on this weekend, we have a lot of rain falling in north platte nebraska and another area of rain in arkansas in southern missouri, we have flash flood watches and even a Flash Flood Warning in effect for fort smith, arkansas. So the heavy rain, again, it is falling over the same areas and the ground is saturated and that could lead to flash flooding. A chance of stronger storms today in the orange zone especially, including kansas and down into oklahoma and parts of the panhandle of texas, too. Large hail, damaging winds. Isolated tornadoes are possible. So thats an area w some missy skies, low clouds currently near 60 in San Francisco. By the afternoon, highs approaching near 70 in San Francisco. Upper 70s around the east bay, around oakland you see numbers in the upper 80s today. Downtown san jose and low 90s inland. A bit of a warmup as we wrap up the weekend. Notice San Francisco mid70s to start the week and valleys could see mid to upper 90s by monday and tuesday. Thats your latest forecast. Guys . Dylan, thanks so much. Still ahead here, is an nfl Team Interested in signing soccer superstar carly lloyd . Plus, its a big week for rap icon missy elliot. Its time for the biggest sale of the year on the sleep number 360 smart bed. Can it help keep us asleep . Yes, it senses your movements and automatically adjusts to keep you both comfortable. And now, all beds are on sale save 50 on the sleep number 360 limited Edition Smart bed. Plus free home delivery. Ends saturday. Were back on this saturday morning with an update to that epic kick from soccer superstar carli lloyd. An impressive boot that could have the world cup winner trading one kind of football for another. Dylan is in the orange room with more. This is so cool, dylan. Its cool. Ifou ever saw the video, i mean im sure youre not surprised that this is happening. Check this out. On tuesday, u. S. Womens National Team carli lloyd visited the Philadelphia Eagles and wowed everyone with this 55yard field goal kick. When you think about it, it shouldnt really shock anyone. Because you know, she does have two world cup titles under her belt. This was, this is also the seventh highestscoring athlete in womens soccer history. But still, a 55foot field goal is a big deal for any place kicker. And teams are taking note. So when asked by planet football tv whether or not she had received offers to play for the nfl, lloyd said that anything is possible. And that she has definitely gotten some inquiries. So it sounds like some, she has some options to kick around. So if lloyd does decide to bring her cleats to the football field, obviously, she would become the first woman to play for the nfl. Lloyd is aware of the history making thing. Were at that cross roads as far as equality. So i mean when youre good, youre good. And she was even getting it through the practice posts. So i dont know, should she take the offer if she gets an offer from the nfl . I think she should. Make history. Absolutely. Sorry to interrupt you, the toughest thing being a kicker is all of the pressure, this ladys has ice in her veins, two olympic golds, two world cups, she would be great. A little pop stars for us.
