30 Rockefeller Plaza in new york, its late night with seth meyers. Tonight milo ventimiglia, from this changes everything, actress and producer geena davis, music from ex hex, featuring the 8g band with julian dorio. [ cheers and applause ladies and gentlemen, seth meyers. [ cheers and applause seth good evening, im seth meyers, and this is late night. Wed like to begin tonight by saying a few words about the horrific Mass Shootings in dayton and el paso this was a heartbreaking weekend of unspeakable tragedy, and yet, one that disturbingly feels all too familiar of course, as we all know by now, theres an epidemic of gun violence and Mass Shootings in this country, and no matter how difficult, we cannot become numb to it, but its also not just about guns the shooting in el paso was an act of white supremacist domestic terrorism specifically targeting hispanics. Its a threat that is growing and real these are facts we must look squarely in the eye, no matter how monstrous. This spread of violent White Supremacy has been fueled by racist vitriol, warning of invasions by immigrants, language that is frequently echoed by rightwing Media Outlets and of course the president. And on top of that, there is, of course, too much easy access to weapons of war that should be outlawed this is a moment that demands moral clarity and urgency from our political leaders. And so now that were seeing the political world react, we thought we might at least try to offer a few thought on whats happening. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ applause ] seth as of sunday, weve had 251 Mass Shootings in this country, in just 216 days. And first, lets just make clear right off the bat that we know theres a clear correlation between the number of guns we have in this country and the number of gunrelated deaths we have in this country for one thing, america has a 4. 4 of the worlds population, but almost half of its civilianowned guns. I mean, just look at this chart from the website vox, comparing gun ownership to gunrelated deaths here are a bunch of other developed countries, and heres where we are were farther away from the uk on this chart than we are in real life. There are proven, straightforward, widely popular ways that we can at least begin to address this epidemic of gun violence, and then, of course, theres the issue of the president s racist, antiimmigrant rhetoric, and the growing threat of White Supremacy. Our political leaders should have to answer for where they stand on these issues, and yet at first, some Senior Republicans refuse to even go on tv and answer questions about it, as cnns jake tapper noted on his show on sunday morning. Were going to talk with at least four president ial candidates today about what they would do to stop this epidemic of Mass Shootings and shootings. We should note that we invited the republican governor, lieutenant governor, and both republican u. S. Senators representing texas to join us this morning they all declined. The republican governor of ohio also declined. We also asked the white house to provide someone to discuss these shootings. That request too, was declined seth so basically, we tried to get the republican governor, lieutenant governor, senior senator, junior senator, the republican dogcatcher, the republican sanitation commissioner, we even tried to get the republican elephant, but it literally ran away. [ light laughter ] let me just say as a general rule, when youre spending all of your time dodging questions from journalists and reporters, that usually means youre on the wrong side of history. Its like when the president tweeted his racist attacks on four democratic congresswomen of color, and republicans literally ran into elevators to avoid reporters. He said, that these progressive congresswomen should go back to their countries im wondering what your reaction is to that im working as hard as i can on reducing healthcare costs im not giving a daily commentary on the president s tweets these are, you know, racist tweets, and do you have any concerns about it . The president said, these minority congresswomen should go back to their countries. Your response . I havent read that, but ill go check it out. Seth man, at this point if reporters want an answer, theyre going to have to start dressing up as elevator operators. And then when republicans finally did speak up, they acted as if the reasons for these attacks were somehow mysterious even though we know the facts about the epidemic of gun deaths and Mass Shootings in this country, and we know that the threat of white supremacist terrorism is growing and real. For example, texas senator, john cornyn tweeted, for every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. Sadly, there are some issues like homelessness and these shootings where we simply dont have all the answers. Hey man, dont throw in a second problem like homelessness youre also not doing anything about as a smokescreen for the first problem. [ laughter ] thats like telling your wife there are a lot of reasons our marriage is failing, like my multiple affairs, or the fact that youre always mad about my multiple affairs [ laughter ] youre not going to get all the answers if you refuse to ask any of the questions but these guys have to pretend this is some sort of unsolvable problem because theyre beholden to powerful lobbies like gun manufacturers and the nra. Its the same reason why once republicans did start going on tv to talk about the shootings, they didnt blame virulent White Supremacy or wide availability of militarystyle assault weapons. Instead, they once again focused on a favorite scapegoat of theirs, video games. How long are we going to let, for example, and ignore at the federal level, particularly, where they can do something about the video Game Industry . I see a video Game Industry that teaches young people to kill the idea these video games, to dehumanize individuals, to have a game of shooting individuals and others, ive always felt that is a problem for future generations and others seth youre blaming video games. You do know that other countries have video games too, right . Japan has a huge gaming culture and very few gun deaths. If video games were so influential, they should make one about Congress Called [ bleep ] do something. [ cheers and applause and as we all know, as we all know, there are common sense gun Safety Measures that are supported by a vast majority of americans that we could easily pass right now that would at least begin to help in reducing the frequency and intensity of these horrific attacks in fact, the house just passed gun safety legislation a few months ago, but its been blocked in the senate by Mitch Mcconnell and on sunday ohio congressman tim ryan called mcconnell out on msnbc there is a bottleneck in the United States senate with Mitch Mcconnell. Seth damn, members of congress are cursing on cable now. [ light laughter ] good if there were ever a time for cursing, this is it. This is an emergency next time tim ryan gives a speech on the house floor, cspans going to have to bleep most of it president trump, [ bleep ], my [ bleep ]. [ laughter ] seth and, of course, its not just mcconnell blocking gun Safety Measures. Its also the gun lobby, and particularly the nra even trump at a meeting with lawmakers after the parkland shooting blurted out that they were afraid of tightening gun restrictions because of the power of the nra it doesnt make sense that i have to wait until im 21 to get a handgun, but i can get this weapon at 18 i dont know so i was just curious as to what you did in your bill you dont address it we didnt address it, mr. President. Look, i think you know why, cause youre afraid of the nra, right i think you underestimate the power of the gun lobby no, no, i tell you what they do have great power i agree with it. They have great power over you people seth there are a few times im glad hes a moron because he just accidentally tells the truth. [ laughter ] hes like the racist uncle at the Family Gathering whos constantly saying offensive stuff, but once in a while because he has no filter, hell just blurt out something everyones thinking like, that susan really likes her wine, doesnt she . [ laughter ] what is that like, her fifth glass . In moments like this, you at least theoretically want a political leader to console and provide moral leadership, but we know trump is incapable of that because of the racist vitriol hes spewed since the day he launched his campaign. Hes demonized undocumented immigrants as rapists and criminals, called migrants seeking asylum an invasion, and so it wasnt very believable when he offered this brief statement after leaving his new jersey golf resort on sunday hate has no place in our country, and were going to take care of it we have to get it stopped. This has been going on for years. For years and years in our country, and we have to get it stopped. And a lot of things are in the works, and a lot of good things. And we have done much more than most administrations, and its really not talked about very much, but weve done actually a lot. So, a lot of things are happening. A lot of things are happening right now. Seth oh my god, our president sounds like a guy who took too many mushrooms at a carnival [ laughter ] a lot of things are happening right now. A lot of. [ laughter ] and this morning, trump spoke from the white house and condemned hatred and violence and White Supremacy specifically but of course, its hard to take anything he reads off a teleprompter seriously after all his previous comments. Beto orourke summed it up when he offered this response to a question from a reporter about whether trump could do anything to make things better. Is there anything in your mind that the president can do now to make this any better what do you think you know the [ bleep ] hes been saying hes been calling mexican immigrants rapists and criminals. I dont know, like, members of the press, what the [ bleep ] . Hold on a second, you know, i its these questions that you know the answers to. I mean, connect the dots about what hes been doing in this country. Hes not tolerating racism hes promoting racism. Hes not tolerating violence hes inciting racism and violence in this country so, you know, i just i dont know what kind of question that is seth yeah, hes right, and, again, if there was a time for swearing, this is it in fact, with all the swearing, at the next debate theyre going to have to put beto and tim ryan on a new program called cspan after dark [ laughter ] and sure, enough when trump did read off the teleprompter today, he ticked through the usual scapegoats he has in the past, mental illness, video games, and did it flatly. We must reform our Mental Health laws to better identify mentally disturbed individuals who may commit acts of violence and make sure those people not only get treatment, but when necessary, involuntary confinement. Mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger, not the gun seth first of all, hes wrong. Second, he sounds like a fourth grader auditioning for the role of the scarecrow in wizard of oz. I would like a lion brian. This was a horrific weekend of tragedy and heartbreak that no one should ever have to bear all decent people, everywhere, should set themselves to the task of stopping this, and expressing solidarity with and support for the oppressed, marginalized communities targeted by this hatred and violence and as for our political leaders, the ones who are supposed to be protecting us, all we say is they need to get their [ bleep ] together. Seth this had been a closer look. [ cheers and applause we have a great show for you tonight. Hes emmy nominated for nbcs, this is us, and you can see him in the new film, the art of racing in the rain, which is in theaters this weekend. He stars in the art of racing in the rain which is in theaters this friday lets take a look. He stopped at the farm on his way home from the speedway at yakima hey even back then i knew i was different than other dogs. My soul just felt more human this one. Definitely this one. The pick of the litter. She always said that. Well, just a minute now we were thinking of keeping that one. He always said that, too. Hey seth please welcome back to the show milo ventimiglia, everyone [ cheers and applause seth how are you im great, man, how you going . Seth good. I want to, as always, ask about this is us, but i want to talk about your movie that is for those who might not have noticed those are real puppies. Seth those are real puppies. [ laughter ] real puppies. Seth and the real voice of Kevin Costner. The real voice of the one and only Kevin Costner seth its like his inner thoughts yeah. Seth this is not a that was yeah, parker. Parker is like, oh my god, Kevin Costner is my in my head . Seth i know, imagine being a dog that young, and your first role in the movie, Kevin Costner is your voice. [ laughter ] i mean, i think he should quit seth probably his last movie. Exactly seth did you what has in the course of the movie and again, this isnt a film where youre having a conversation with a dog, but you do want to hear what the dog is saying like, Kevin Costner wasnt on set, like, standing behind the dog. No, no. I met kevin on thursday. [ laughter ] i made the movie last year seth gotcha. Yeah, no, kevin wasnt on set. I didnt even really need to hear what the dog was thinking because everything going on, the narration, was in the dogs head seth right all in the dogs head for me, it was kind of like work the dog, say a line, and then id hear simon, our directors like, okay, pause, please. Im like interact with the dog, interact with the dog and then then like, okay, and action. Then i say my line seth right it was all, like, theres someone back there with a clock going, and kevins talking, kevins talking. Going to be talking and done milo, go. Seth that is that was the first time you ever met kevin was on thursday at the premiere . Yeah. Seth hes a good guy dude, hes awesome. Seth yeah. I was, like, mildly shell shocked. Just like hes Kevin Costner. I mean, ive been a fan of everything that hes done for years. But hes so warm and so lovely and supportive of the film so. Seth and its pretty great for him, you just realize the kind of star he is you had to work months on that movie. He probably knocked it out in a day. Two days. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] he didnt even have to, like, match a talking dogs mouth or anything no. No, no, no none of that seth he was living his best life, yeah i mean, i got to get some of those jobs [ light laughter ] seth you play a racecar driver in the film weve talked in the past that you love motorcycles yeah. Seth did you have to do any thinking about what made a good racecar driver for this film you know what, i kind of equated acting i kind of, like, took racecar driving as like, laid it right over being an actor you have the same focus, the same determination you kind of have that human spirit to, like, do good so that part was easy. For me, it was more like, hey, let me focus on being a father, focus on being a husband let me focus on being a best friend to this fourlegged pooch. Seth there you go. That works yeah. Seth i know we were just talking backstage. You just started shooting this season of this is us. You had a little bit of time off this summer. Did you travel at all . I did man, i kind of circled the globe. I went i was in japan riding motorcycles with a buddy seth wow and so when that excuse my ignorance, do you just rent a motorcycle when you go to japan . Oh, they rented one for me. Seth okay, gotcha. Yeah. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] whos they like, you just show up in japan, its like, heres [ laughter ] actually, i went and rode motorcycles with Norman Reedus seth oh, all right, Norman Reedus from walking dead. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [ cheers and applause seth thats hes got a tv show where he talks about, you know, like, brings his friends to exotic places to ride motorcycles i dont if i was allowed to say that but i said it [ laughter ] seth now now, walking dead and this is us. Are either of those shows big in japan . Like, are you guys recognizable fellows . People still freak out when they see norman. Seth yeah. Still freak out when they see norman and like, for me, it was like, mildly like a lot of bowing. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] with norman they freak out because they think, like, if hes here, zombies are close totally, if im here, its like, you know, youre going to get triplets seth yeah. [ light laughter ] or, like, oh, no, hes here, something devastatingly sad is about to happen. [ laughter ] they just start crying. Seth i want to ask again about when you ride your motorcycles in japan like, what do you how much of the day is spent on the motorcycle a lot i mean, we were kind of down near osaka and kyoto and nara, and so wed kind of ride around. But also really what normans out to do is just kind of like experience the cultures. So i had a bunch of friends in that part of japan and so i introduced him to my friends and my friends had friends and before we know it, were at, like, a furniture makers shop seth wow im, like, looking at chairs, picking them up while cameras are rolling. Im like, can i get four of these . Seth i cant decide if that makes total sense or no sense that you start on a motorcycle and end up at a furniture shop [ light laughter ] it maybe makes total sense yeah. Seth seems like people who would want to tinker around with motorcycles might also want to, like, make a table yeah. I think so i mean, woodworking and grease seth exactly do you ever are you somebody are you ever going at a speed in which we should be fearful for you . Yes seth you do . [ light laughter ] yeah. Seth see, thats why i know my wife rides a motorcycle and i dont oh, really . Seth yeah. I dont even like going on a bike downhill. [ laughter ] but see, heres the thing, seth, bikes to me feel more dangerous than motorcycles seth uhhuh. [ laughter ] listen, i cant convince you otherwise. Seth yeah, thats why people on regular bikes wear those giant helmets. [ light laughter ] i think they should seth yeah. They should totally wear the big giant, like, cant see me, dont know who i am. Seth how much thought do you put into, like, the and, again, this is no judgment zone the outfit on your motorcycle are you, like, somebody who wants to look like, match as cool as the bike is . No, i dont care about how it looks. Im all about safety seth okay. As i just admitted that i speed. [ laughter ] which i dont entirely all the time seth gotcha. No, for me, its always full sleeves, full face helmet. Boots. Some kind of like jeans or denim or something and like, and like take your time seth all right, gotcha so the first time youre riding a new kind of bike, do you have to be careful with it, or are they sort of all the same . Okay, gotcha no, theyre all different theyre all different. Your bike kind of becomes an extension of you like thats the thing. So when i was in spain and riding with norman, it was like they put me im like, please just put me on a harleydavidson. I really just wanted to be on a harleydavidson, because thats what im familiar with, is with harleydavidson. They put me on a harley, but still, it was just just different seth right, because the exchange rate. [ laughter ] yeah. Yes. The exchange rate. Thats exactly seth im sort of a im a grease guy, too. You know how it all ends with this is do you know how this season ends or sort of know the whole i know, like, the far off seth gotcha. But also thats what ive been told. Seth right, so it can change things can always change. Its a newspaper you got to wait and see whats going to happen. But what i do know i mean, ooh. Seth do you [ laughter ] it is really, truly beautiful. Seth do you like having the burden of knowing a thing thats so yeah [ laughter ] who does . Seth yeah. Its like carrying, like, you know, the Nuclear Football lik this is a thing that destroys the world seth yeah. And obviously, one, i would assume there are so many people who want to get it out of you. Yes seth and two there would be so many people that would be furious at you if thats how it went down. Yeah, probably, so im just going to shut my mouth and not say a word actually, i dont know anything. Im going to play like stupid actor. Seth you got coming up, its nominated for an emmy again. Yeah. Seth congratulations very exciting. Thank you very much [ cheers and applause seth and deservedly so thank you seth and up against this happened before, but youre up against your costar sterling k. Brown. I am. Im up against my son. Seth that is very [ light laughter ] whos already beat me so im, like, really proud seth yeah, thats true and now its like, hey, give one up for dad you know, i feel like if the son maybe seth yeah. Maybe but i mean, what an amazing field. You know, you got Kit Harington in there seth yeah. You got bob odenkirk. Seth yep bateman. Bateman what a sweetheart. Sent me a nice couple bottles of wine and some chocolate. Seth and he did now, this is true, he did this for everyone in the category he did. But its not like heres the thing about emmy voting, like we as Academy Members can vote. You cant vote in your category. Seth right so it not like, hey, jason, i cant vote for you now because you sent me two bottles of wine. Seth right sorry, man. Seth i think hes hoping if you win, youll mention him in your speech. Right . I mean seth youd be like, im really happy i got this. But also thank you for the orange wine thank you for the orange wine. Seth thanks so much for being here its always such a pleasure to talk to you. Thanks, man [ cheers and applause seth give it up for milo ventimiglia, everybody. [ cheers and applause seth our next guest is an Academy Award winning actress you know from such films as Thelma Louise and a league of their own. Her documentary, this changes everything, will be in select theaters friday and on demand. Lets take a look. Whenever i had a meeting in hollywood, id say have you ever noticed how few female characters there are in movies made for kids . Every Single Person said, oh, no, no, no, thats not true anymore. Thats been fixed. Nobody i talked to was seeing the problem that i was seeing. So thats when i decided, if im going to change this, i need the data seth please welcome to the show geena davis, everyone [ cheers and applause seth hello hi. Seth im so happy youre here me, too seth this is really impressive you started, independent of this documentary, a research institute, yes yes seth to study gender in media. Yes seth what gave you that idea and how do you go about starting Something Like that . Right i didnt know but it was because when my daughter was a toddler, i sat her down to watch preschool shows and videos and things, and the very first thing i watched, i noticed there were far more male characters than female characters. And i thought, you know, in the 21st century, surely by now we should be showing kids that boys and girls share the sandbox equally. It was in everything and and then, just like i said, i did in that clip, i didnt intend to make it my lifes mission but since nobody was noticing it, i decided im going to get the data, and then i can go directly to the creators and share it with them in a private way, you know, in a friendly way. You didnt know this, but, and, but, wow. And they were horrified, and seth because they genuinely thought it had changed, yeah they absolutely, definitely thought it was different and very often it was weird because very often theyd name a movie with one female character as proof that gender inequality was fixed and its because it was an important character seth right like, there have been people that say, well theres been belle. Seth yeah. So now everything is completely different now that weve had belle. Seth they were like, yeah, you were like, you had to have a beauty. Right . Right [ light laughter ] seth dont pat yourself on the back right seth what about howd you get involved in the documentary . So, tom donahue, the director, had been working on it for a while, actually. He had he was inspired to do this from his own experiences of figuring out that he was a feminist and realizing that men have to be part of the solution to this problem. So hed been shooting it for a while and then heard about my research he just said, i really want to get some research in this thing. And then he heard about my institute and and i came on board and so seth and so the title of this changes everything is personal to you because its the sort of thing you were hearing after Thelma Louise, after a league of their own. And what was it why were you want to make it thtitle of the documentary . So we know when Thelma Louise came out, it caused a big stir and it was in the press everywhere, but a lot, a lot of commentators said, this will change everything. Now theres gonna to be so many movies with female stars because it hit struck such a nerve. And then after a league of their own, it was like, theres going to be so many more sports movies with women. And we know how many of those have come out. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] past 25 years so, but i believed it. It sounded great and, yay, i get to be in a movie thats changing everything thats so awesome. And then nothing and then nothing and nothing. But, then every five years or so, something comes out. Hunger games comes out, whatever well now, everything is different now and it never is. Seth and basically, your data shows, certainly in the role, when you look at Something Like female directors, its about as bad as its always been right seth even though, i think if you ask people, they would say because of, you know, wonder woman and whatnot, theyd think, oh, no, its better now. Its probably close to 50 50. There has been none progress. Its like [ light laughter ] seth now, thats a data term youre using there yes [ laughter ] seth okay. Gotcha thats very scientific i sometimes use technical terms, im sorry you couldnt even say, well, in 500 years, well reach parity, because theres none seth its so incremental theres nothing theres no progress at all its not even glacial. Seth you sort of one of the things you point out is gender bias is often unconscious. Right seth and is that one of the things you try to do both with your documentary and your research is that if theres maybe just a consciousness around it, that would be the way that it would change because, obviously, as you point out, a lot of people, you know, probably goodminded people are Walking Around thinking progress is happening yes, right, exactly well, heres what i think. I think i figured out that for the onscreen representation, the data really is the magic key, because they had no idea. I mean, they knew they were making fewer movies with a female lead character, but when you talk about the body of the movies nearly empty of female presence, theyre like, wow, what did i do . Why did i do that . And so they want to make the change, but behind the camera, seems like a completely different problem because everybody has known for decades how few female writers, directors and producers there are. And nobody said, what, what am i doing . I must change this. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] im shocked. You know, theyre like, no, i know i dont hire women. [ laughter ] im probably going to keep doing that. Seth you i do want to talk about the two films you mentioned because theyre so enduring, they hold up so well theyre so theyre really are perfect movies Thelma Louise people will still i imagine still come up to you, and is it true that sometimes, people will say they reenact the movie . Ive had many people say, my friend and i acted out your trip. And i was like, which part . [ laughter ] like, was it when we killed a guy or go to the liquor store, evade the law or kill ourselves . Which part . [ light laughter ] seth thats right. My friend went the whole way. I only did most of the movie. [ light laughter ] i jumped out of a car. Seth yeah, i jumped out of a car. I mean, im not crazy. You and then a league of their own, you know, rosie was here recently. We were talking about the film because obviously its so sad that we lost Penny Marshall who you know, and again, when you talk about representation, that film really had it. You know, it was Penny Marshalls movie, and, you know, obviously a femaledriven film what are your memories of that film and working with penny and that cast . It was terrific fun to have to be with so many women. I mean, its so unbelievably rare even doing Thelma Louise was rare because there was two of us so then to be surrounded by women was super fun. The weird thing is, almost every interviewer who came to the set asked, so is there a lot of cat fighting going on, is there a lot of meow, meow . Im like, what century are you from whats wrong with you . But people have this crazy assumption about women that we dont get along. We love each other we really support each other seth i make this assumption about actors of any gender who are in sports movies i assume that they played the sport, but you did not is it true that you were not, in any way, shape or form a baseball player . Not only that, but not any sport. [ laughter ] i was i was very tall and gangly and i was sure that i was uncoordinated and so i was very physically shy the Girls High School Basketball Team was constantly trying to recruit me and i said, i dont know how to play basketball. And they said, just stand there. [ laughter ] youre the tallest girl in the whole area, in the county. [ laughter ] so, so i had to learn because, you know, im only playing the best baseball player anyone has ever seen i only hit home runs in the movie. Butso i would do the mighty swing and then the prop guys had a giant slingshot. [ laughter ] but to give myself a little credit, i did really learn how to play baseball, and play it well, yeah seth how to throw a baseball and who was the final judge of whether it was convincing . Did penny, when you auditioned, did penny have you throw a baseball, did she want to see . No, no, yeah.
