So, what was your takeaway obviously it seems as thought this will be ideally, i will say, for both me and you the last time we have to split it into two maybe it will be 10 or less coming into the September Debates . Has to be seth has to be people are going to have trouble making the thresholds. One of the interesting ironies is that everybody says, you have to take money out of politics you have to take money out of the politics. The main measure of whether or not you make the next round is how much money you raise between now and then so, we have problems but youre going to see that field get smaller. Seth it did seem like one of the things people are talking about is how you have your centrist candidates. You have your progressive candidates and it seemed like last night, joe biden, to some degree, was defending obamas record a great deal, particularly in regards to immigration and regards to healthcare do you find that surprising . No. Because i think this party does not have its head right. I think that not a joke good, im glad you didnt take it as one. I have to work on the Closing Argument we do the Closing Argument every night on the show. And id love your help you can go on social media, find me id really love your help. I want to do, tonight, the questions for the democrats. My first question is, why are you doing this . What is this what are you doing is it, i know more about healthcare that i can title differently than your plan thats almost the exact same as my plan but i wont explain it that way because im not really sure what it is is that the why . [ applause ] seth right if we applaud, but its, like, true you know what i mean its like, oh, wait, that is my new healthcare plan. Why . When you know that the person that you will take on if you get the nomination is the president of the United States, is one of the most fearsome politics in a generation and has already said, i will tell you what my plan is for healthcare after the election. Seth yeah. So youre not going to have a granular policy debate and even if you were, you should still right now be obsessed with convincing americans that you understand what theyre experiencing right now why it is unacceptable to them and why they are desperate for better two reasons, one, thats what beat your ass the last time, is your inability to do that, and thats what we need as leadership but i dont see it on the stage. I didnt see it either night i watched the whole time seth i also watched the whole time and i did think it got really in the weeds on healthcare but in their defense, that was right off the bat, those were the questions you know, i think its very hard when its immediately framed like, you know, to kamala, joe biden said this about your healthcare plan. And then its joe, kamala said this about your healthcare plan. It does seem like do you feel as though there should be more room for candidates at debates to talk about what youre talking about as opposed to the fact that it immediately drills down, and hey, now were talking about this define your plan versus the other. Well, two answers, just in case one doesnt work. [ laughter ] the first answer is, on your show, youre told very clearly, if you dont answer what seth tells you, you will never be on this show again. Seth very clearly. Yes. [ laughter ] we dont do that in my business you know what happens a lot . This is really going to shock you. We ask questions and they dont answer them. Seth yeah. So they make the choice all you do look, were both good friends with jake tapper. Seth yeah. Who i believe is without question one of the smartest people in the business he was with dana bash and this guy named don lemon. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] new kid on the block im in a cab in detroit, this guy turns around and goes, i recognized your voice, youre chris lemon. [ laughter ] so you know, at least let me know, well, were not that far away from understanding that black and white can get along, because you confused me with a black guy. So, great. Heres the thing we ask them the question, they do what they will with the opportunity. Jake, dana, and don, they provide the opportunity. Heres the subject matter. You dont have to go granular on me you dont have to tell me what the middle class is going to do because you cant know how youre going to get it done. You dont know what the state of play will be you dont know who the players will be. You dont know if you will have both houses of congress or not so why be in the extreme of how you will get something done when you know people dont believe its going to go that way. Youre missing opportunities to connect with them about what their anxieties are. And youre creating something that we cant understand seth i think one thing we do know is going to happen, and i feel like mayor Pete Buttigieg made this point, no matter who gets the nomination, donald trump will say theyre a socialist. Yeah. Seth how do you as a and if he is identified this is from the latest cross tabs on the poll cross tabs are the explanations behind the numbers that we report if the president runs against somebody who can be reasonably identified as socialist there is no punchline on this, by the way. I know that face its not going to be funny [ laughter ] seth oh, oh, oh, its going to be good then he wins by at least six points so Pete Buttigieg, who is obviously very smart, is right about that and we see it in the numbers. Make your point. Seth my only point was how do you defend against youre going to run against a person who is not going to make his decision he will call Pete Buttigieg a socialist just as much as he will call Bernie Sanders a socialist. Yes seth even though that they are very far apart, i would think, insofar as how they view themselves so how do you protect against a guy who basically is playing by back alley rules heres the answer well, one, that is not new in politics labels are very helpful as a point of persuasion and as a point of opposition. But the goal is, you call me what you want. Im talking to them. Yes, i hear him, especially in this coming election i hear him hes noise to me i want to talk to you. This is what you need to know about me this is what i know about you. This is why im doing this let him say what he wants to say. Thats the goal. Will you be able to achieve that its difficult you will have a harder time doing it if you havent gotten ready for it if you want to have a meaningful discussion about race in this country, which is so hard, because what we forgot isnt that we have these problems in this society its that we forgot that we had been trying to change culture to suppress the animus. That were not going to give you an audience if you want to say ugly things. Were not going to play into your division. Thats what has returned not the problems so if you want to have a meaningful discussion, but people have had to watch months of you almost play the same issues out with your own people, who are supposed to be opposing what is on the other side of it, you dont think theres going to be fatigue you dont think that when you get to the general, youre not allowing your opponent to say, but seth, you call everybody this you say everybody is a racist. You say everything is racial when does it end why mitigate the strength of something that matters so much just for political convenience and advantage right now. I really dont get where their heads are at, hence my closing questions. Seth youve got booker, you thought did a good job last night. You thought castro did a good job last night thats what the iowa caucus voters said. Seth okay. No opinion [ laughter ] i tell you what i dont like. Heres what i dont like, ill be honest. It will stay in this room. [ laughter ] thid that look, youve got to pick your spots and why youre going to attack i know cory booker hes a man of integrity, he believes in Public Service hes very smart and very committed. Youre going to go after biden about his record, you have one, too. You were the mayor of newark, very tough city, inherited big problems the crime bills that youre talking about were about big problems that came from cities like newark all over the country. There were things that didnt happen the way you wanted them to there were things that happened the way biden didnt if youre attacking yourselves on that level again, it is time wasted that you could haveeen going after your real opponent, as you say, and you are weakening both of yourselves potentially. Because youre allowing the opponent lets say cory booker, senator booker, gets it. You dont think that the opponents going to say, i saw you on the stage there with biden. I remember him saying that you were a terrible mayor. You couldnt take care of anybody. You did a lot of stopandfrisk. Youre giving ammunition to your opponent they keep saying we dont want to fight with each other and then thats exactly what they do seth do you think they should behave the same way youre arguing they will have to behave when its up against donald trump, and do the same thing, which is when they get asked a question that specifically mentions what an opponent said, even in a democratic debate, be like, you know what, im not here to talk about what first of all, thats what they all have always done. There is a misconception, i believe, in the party right now, about what they need to be proving to you guys. I think if they were more like brother quay over there theyd be better off. The simplicity of his shirt gives a complete message right . Seth there you go. [ cheers and applause when did you hear that in earnest last night when did Somebody Just think about how youd feel, okay if i asked the question, seth, you going to tax the middle class or not how are you going to pay you going to tax the middle class . And hes like, well maybe, but no, but see i want you to understand this, in the plan on page 19 i say that im going to get to it on page 27 and whats that thats what you saw last night but imagine if hed say, look, heres what i want to achieve with it. What we have now isnt enough. What we have now have people not being covered. What we have now is Financial Insecurity we have to get back to covering more people and doing it in a way where the Companies Win less than you do as the patient thats what im going to spend my time doing. I have a plan with how to do it. Well figure out how we get it done exactly once i get there. Are you unsatisfied . Please welcome to the show, governor larry hogan, everyone [ cheers and applause seth welcome to the show well, thank you, seth seth i want to tick off some things that are impressive about you. Youre one of the most popular governors in america you are a republican in a blue state, and you have been vocally critical of the president. Why are there not more of you . [ laughter ] wow well, thats a good question you know, im kind of one in a million, seth. I mean, im you know. [ cheers ] i think that there probably are some other folks out there that are like me, but they dont get a lot of attention so, look, like most people in america, im completely fed up with all this divisive angry politics, and i think that [ cheers and applause and so im in a state that has 26 republican just got overwhelmingly reelected as a republican 70 of my legislature is democrats. Because ive worked toward the middle, and tried to find that common ground, where we can all stand together, and i just happen to believe that theres a whole lot more that unites us than divides us, and we should do away with all the angry politics [ cheers and applause seth you are you just became chair of the National Governors association. This is a Bipartisan Group of all our governors. Im pretty sure thats the first time theyve ever mentioned the National Governors association on Late Night Television [ light laughter ] seth yeah. It has not come up, yeah [ laughter ] you maybe noticed the slow way i said it to make sure i got it right. You are a part of a group called the national National Governors association. Seth yes tell me though this does not look like youre dancing with is that marie osmond that is marie yeah, that was last [ laughter ] seth this is at so here, everybody thought oh, National Governors association, that sounds super boring but there you are rocking it out. So last friday, i just became the chairman, and they had a little event afterwards. Donnie and marie put on a show, and she dragged me up on the stage and embarrassed me, and look, im hoping i can get a nutrisystem gig out of it. [ laughter ] seth yeah, i was going to say. [ applause ] you are a republican who believes in Climate Change you believe thats a very serious issue. You also [ cheers and applause which is great you also believe in infrastructure do you feel as though infrastructure can lead to helping eradicate Climate Change i know, for example, you have in your state, you have moved more money towards Highway Infrastructure as opposed to public transportation. That seems maybe counterintuitive to somebody who believes Climate Change is such a big deal not really true, but thanks for saying that. Seth well, there was a just for i know i dont want to get into transportation so weve invested 14 billion in transit, about 9 billion in roads. Weve just moved forward were under construction with the largest publicprivate transit project in north america. And i pushed through tougher clean air standards than 48 other states, and twice as strong as the paris accords as a republican governor in maryland. [ cheers and applause seth and do you feel as though you are and i genuinely think thats great news do you feel as though youre making progress with the other governors . Because it seems to me you basically wrote an oped saying that yes, federally right now, donald trump is moving away from the paris climate accords, but you believe state by state, this can be addressed. Look, so we have a group called rggi, which is the regional Greenhouse Gas initiative, and we had nine states we now have 13 states in the east coast that are all together, and i think we are making a difference. Some states are taking it more seriously than others, but my new role as chairman of the National Governors association, im representing democratic and republican governors, and i can tell you that people are focused on the issue, and taking it seriously. And one of the great things about this organization is, its a really bipartisan, Nonpartisan Group on infrastructure, which i Just Launched my Initiative Last week theres disagreement among republicans and democrats about how to solve these problems, but were actually getting things done in the states unlike washington, where it seems like we have nothing but divisiveness, and dysfunction, and gridlock you know, were getting things done thats what people want. [ applause ] seth which is great, and im really glad, and again, i think it is the issue of this generation so im really happy that you are taking it seriously. Obviously, i have to bring up the fact that donald trump attacked a city that is in your state, and he referred to baltimore as rodent infested your initial statement said, you know, that were tired of attacks between politicians. It didnt quite seem fair to me to describe that as attacks between politicians. Elijah cummings doing his job on the oversight committee, and donald trump sort of making an ad hominem attack. So, on friday, i gave a National Address Live National television to the National Governors association, talking about, that we have to do something about the angry rhetoric, and the divisiveness, and all the attacks, and that this politics thats infecting america, and thats making it impossible for us to get anything done in washington. 14 hours later, we had another perfect example of exactly what i was talking about. And i said, the last thing i need to do is jump in there and have more angry reaction to the angry reaction, back and forth. There were plenty of people in america that were tweeting back and forth. I just said, lets just stop all the tweeting, and lets focus on how were going to solve some of these problems by working together. Thats what america wants. [ cheers and applause seth i agree i do agree there is that and again, i dont want to say that politics wasnt divisive before donald trump. Certainly, you would know that better than me you come from your family comes from politics so you know the long history of it your father was the first republican congressman to call for the impeachment of richard nixon. Thats right. Seth so you i think you understand the history of divisiveness it does seems like every time we say these attacks have to stop, when were talking about something thats so specific to what donald trump did, it is spreading out the blame in a way thats not quite fair. So i said the comments, the tweet was outrageous, and unacceptable, and inappropriate. Thats a pretty strong comment but i didnt jump in and start jumping in to the fray, and getting into the mud with everybody else but look, i was elected four years ago, i just got reelected. In my inaugural address in january of 2015 i talked about trying to move away from the extremes of either party, and to try to do something about the broken politics in america its what ive been focused on for four years its why, as you pointed out, im one of the most popular governors in america not because im just such a great fun guy [ light laughter ] but because were doing what i think most people want, and they just regardless of whether theyre republican or democrat, they want all this nonsense to stop, and they want us to just sit down and figure out a way to come up with bipartisan Common Sense Solutions to the Serious Problems that are out there. Seth i think because of that, and because of the things you were saying about yourself, there was some talk about would you maybe run against donald trump in the primary. Its not always going to be the party of donald trump. And there were a lot of people that were approaching me because im a different kind of republican thats been talking out in different ways. But it didnt make any sense i mean, look, there was i think theres a majority of people in america who agree with some of the things im talking about. But they dont know who the heck i am, number one number two, the republican primary seth i think youre as famous as donald trump youre selling yourself short. Seth one of nine i needed to be the favorite [ light laughter ] seth yeah, and is it true that everyone in your family, all nine siblings start with an r . Like the kardashians. [ laughter ] seth yeah. Like the kardashian if there were more. But we pre we pre seth you predated the kardashians. Thats the word i was thinking of preconceived, but that was not the right word. [ laughter ] yeah, no, my granddad started it, and then we all followed suit seth gotcha, and was there any fear that you were going to run out of r names along the line i think we chose weird ones seth okay. Seth but this is i mean, its a wonderfully made film about this is a Sexual Assault that happened to somebody, and that is captured on cell phone, and its basically, you are playing someone whos trying to figure out what happened over the course of the night . Yeah. Seth and this is something that being from the uk you think happens less, but there is less familiarity with it there . I think more americans exist than british people, just because you guys are a big country. Seth oh you think, its just a numbers game almost like its a numbers game but also, when i was you know, im pretty hermione granger, and i was like, i need to research and do homework bust she kind of pippa, the wondful writer director, restrained me from doing that and was like, i dont want you to research cause the character doesnt know what happened. So, maybe you shouldnt know what happened so that when youre in a scene with a lawyer, and theyre telling you the reality of these crimes, and how they go down, youre really actively listening and also, the character doesnt remember what happened that night, so i never have to fabricate, you know, memory of assault. Seth and method is something you sort of get ostracized in the film yeah. Seth by your friends and ive read that you basically did the same thing with your castmates, you started being friendly with them, and then you kind of pulled away as you got to those scenes. Yeah. Seth is that something that youve always sort of worked with as a performer . I mean, yeah. [ light laughter ] when i sorry. [ laughter ] when i was younger, i was in a showcase i went to the brit school spiderman went there. Seth oh wow. Yeah, it was good seth yeah, yeah. He came to my play once, and was like one of the seth wow wow. Spiderman. Seth yeah. And then, so that happened, and then you did a showcase to get an agent and i was doing this play called the wasps, and i had to like tie up this woman, and trap her, and i was like, acting is all about the most dramatic thing. And so i tied my friend naomi. I was like, how about you try and escape, and i just trap you before i go, so i feel it. Seth oh, so this [ laughter ] so this wasnt naomi wasnt on stage, you were just tying her up backstage . [ laughter ] so, i was like, escape trafalgar studios, and i will encap you know, capture you. And shes quite small, so i did. Seth well, thats smart. [ laughter ] i mean, if youre going to do that, you pick your smallest friend, yeah [ laughter ] shes massively talented. And then i ran, captured her, tied her up, put like tape on her face, and then she consented, i swear [ laughter ] and then i like, went to the wings, and was like cause someone was performing the monologue separate, maybe a comedic, who knows seth yeah, and they were probably wondering whats all that banging backstage [ laughter ] and then i was stroking her hair in the wings, like shh. [ laughter ] tied up little girl, and then the technician could see what was happening, and he wrote a note saying, are you okay . [ laughter ] held it up and my friend had to be like [ laughter ] it was so, so yeah. [ cheers and applause seth yeah. They say what do they say . Seth they say if you ever see an abduction taking place you want to hold up a note [ laughter ] you definitely want to hold up a note just to make sure everything is okay you won an award, and you actually shouted out the podcast host of your favorite podcast. God, yeah seth yeah. Ive done every interview, and shouted them out, and they havent responded. Seth your favorite podcast is my favorite murder. Seth my favorite murder. [ cheers and applause yes. Any murderinos in the house seth and so you were calling them out by name yeah, and my family so i was like, thank you mom, thank you dad and then i went, thank you, karen and georgia, who i love, and who the director told me to listen to in preparation for the film accentwise. And so my family responded like, who are these women that you want to thank after us . And yeah, i just absolutely love them seth and you still havent gotten anything back from them they dont like me.
