Now. A second gun has been found. It is a shotgun. Also purchased in the state of nevada belonging to the 19yearold gunman who grew up here in gilroy. That shotgun was found in his car right near the festival grounds. There is no reason to believe there is a second suspect. Thats a big development. We also just chatted now with the police chief. Lets hear what he had to say. He went shopping at a number of stores in town. I could not tell you what he was i dont have that level of detail what he was purchasing, but most stores now have video so the investigators have been able to retrace back. Theyve been going back from the time of the incident. Reporter well shift our attention to the three young lives that were lost. Tonight there will be a vigil for 13yearold keyla salazar. For that part of the story lets bring in laura who joins us in san jose. Reporter im at the Power Academy. Look behind me. You will see the media gathered. We are expecting to hear from keylas family and we expect them to be very emotional. Lets look at some video from before. Kayla and her stepfather were both hit sunday night. During the chaos they became separated from her mom and sister. Her mom saw her go down, but she thought she would get back up. Im told her stepdad tried to go back to get her, but was told he had to go get medical attention. They were separated for hours and didnt find out for several hours that kayla had died. We spoke with her aunt a short time ago. She says kayla was full of life and will be missed. Its really peaceful. Its like she was such a good little girl. She didnt deserve to die in such a violent way. I think at this point just remembering who she was and how beautiful she was and the dreams that we had for her. Reporter again, back out here live. You see the media gathered. Were expecting to hear from keylas family and im sure they will be emotional. They are expected to go to a private vigil. That includes the roll of the district attorney. Lets bring in mary ann with the latest from the d. A. And the investigatory part of this shooting. Reporter we just wrapped up a press conference here at the Police Department where the police chief addressed the concern that perhaps some victims were hit by gun fire from officers while they were trying to subdue the subject. We also learned from an fbi agent about a second concern that perhaps this gunman was targeting minorities. As people ran for their lives away from gun fire at the gilroy garlic festival sunday, many question whether the gunman was targeting minorities. We asked the fbi. We have no reason to believe at this point that he was targeting any particular characteristics or any class. Reporter three people were killed. The District Attorneys Office is looking into the possibility that some of those victims may have been hit by bullets from officers weapons. Its certainly something that we have been looking at in terms of what bullets killed the individuals other than the shooter. Reporter because of the work ahead, investigators say they may not be done processing the scene for three to five days. Now, we talked to the police chief and he said he was very concerned that perhaps the officers may have injured some of the people at the festival when they opened fire on the suspect, but he says so far in this investigation theres no indication that thats what happened. Also, we learned here at the press conference just a few minutes ago that there was an extensive search of the creek and investigators found a path te gunman. That pack was filled with ammo. As the 75th annual Santa Clara County fair sets itself up, it does so with a cloud hanging over its it opens on thursday, less than a week after the gilroy shootings, so it will open with much more security than usual. Like many people in this community, i havent slept very well since sunday. Reporter the supervisor is working with the Sheriffs Department to increase the number of officers here. The idea is to do whatever they need to do to make sure that every family is safe inside that facility during the fair. We will be checking bags and backpacks and ensuring that when people come in, that there is a sense of security from the entrance of the gate and all during the festivities. Reporter fair organizers want people to know that everything from the rides to the livestock will be well protected. It just seems very safe and they have a lot of security and we now have to get like passes to get in and out, theyre checked. Its actually i think its a good thing. In San Francisco violent assaults, robberies caught on camera. Members of the Chinese Community say theyre being targeted specifically. They say police wont give them the crime data they need to confirm or refute that. We are joined live from chinato chinatown. Reporter police say theres no reason to hide the data. Theres just a lot of it so right now theyre trying to work with the supervisor, but as to why we are here right now, six to eight violent sninincidents the last six months, one of which happened in broad daylight two weeks ago when an elder was picked up off the ground and his watch ripped off his wrist. We did see a few isolated low 80s in the south bay, but downtown we only had a high of 78 and right now dropping down to 73 degrees. Through tonight mostly clear skies and tempere h midnight th tomorrow morning. The only problem we see in the forecast as we move through tomorrow would be the fog. You can see its thickest at the coastline. Low clouds pulling into santa rosa and cloud cover near oakland and down towards the south bay it looks like well start off with mostly sunny skies through san jose. By the afternoon everybody gets sunshine except the coastline. We expect that fog to linger there. Tomorrow does have a similar forecast coming our way. Well keep cool 60s at the coas. Livermore 84. What do we know about that fight several years ago . Reporter it was in 2016 and we know it was a serious fight and it played a part in the transfer of the teen from San Francisco to a high school here. Thats where he became classmates with the second suspect in this murder case. Police say he has confessed to the stabbing with this knife that he reportedly brought from the united states. The Police Officer was stabbed 11 times following a drug deal that turned into a theft and then an extortion attempt. The funeral was at the same church where the officer was married a few weeks ago. He had just returned from his honeymoon and forgot to bring his gun to work. Thcene was just yards away from the hotel where the pair were arrested. Why would you have a knife and why would you bring it . Reporter a resident told me whats being reported in italy is not being reported in the u. S. It was grizzly. They didnt play it. Reporter the stories created a lot of conversation here. The teens were schoolmates at the high school before graduating, but elder was transferred in from sacred heart in San Francisco. After a 2016 fight with another member of the football team. Law enforcement sources tell us that that was a onepunch fight and the boy that was hit hit his head and was seriously injured and has since recovered. Police have video of the suspects movements right before the massacre leading them to believe he did act alone. Were continuing our coverage from gilroy a second straight day. So many people in this community trying to piece together and really grapple with whats happened. Reporter they are. The Community Members and of course the investigators, theres a lot happening, not just late this afternoon when we spoke with the fbi and police chief, but also in the short while coming up this evening well be going to that vigil in san jose for one of the three victims, 13yearold keyla salazar. Thats happening in san jose. Here in gilroy lets take you high above. This is the park that is about a mile and a half from where im standing downtown. The fbi told us they will be here for three to five days more. Th and they are trying to be as comprehensive as possible. They have doubled the amount of agents here in gilroy. Any have 40 fbi specialists on site. Its working in terms of the pace because today they did locate a bag of ammunition near the creek. That creek is where the accessed the gilroy garlic festival. They located that bag of ammunition and they do believe it was a lone suspect, that 19yearold from gilroy. We talked to the police chief about the three gilroy Police Officers who engaged with the suspect. I placed them on administrative leave. I did not want to put them in a position of having to come back to work and deal with all of this. I think its a very emotional thing for them. Its one thing to be involved in a shooting, but then they were also in the middle of the people that were shot and then immediately went into the rendering aid mode and those two things combined i think for anybody is a very difficult thing to go through. Reporter its tough for everyone involved. Joining me now is bill christopher. Thank you for your time. Sure. Its a tough time to talk to you, but its been a tough weekend for us here in gilroy. Reporter having grown up here and so many people know you, if they dont know you, theyve tasted your product. Youve provided the nation with. You are so prominent in this community and you are such a big part of this festival from its inception. What were you doing sunday night . How did you hear about this . I was at the festival sunday until about 4 00 and came home and heard the news about it. I was just devastated. Were so saddened for the families that lost loved ones. We couldnt comprehend. Its something that happens somewhere else, but not here in gilroy. Reporter you have been so instrumental in this community and i know youre very humble and your family put gilroy on the map. How many people come to this festival . Were talking the positive impact of this attendees can be up to 100,000 people, but its the volunteers and the kids and people and town that come in and make the festival and they get the money for all the charities in town. They all rely on that money to run their clarit charities for year. Its a great cause. Reporter ill ask you some difficult requequestions now. This town will recover. When will this town start to recover . As you know, its going to take a lot of grieving, not just for the people that were injured, but the people that were there, for the bay area. Its going to take time to have it all sink in and see how you feel, but we will heal. It will take some time, but we will be back. Reporter any indications at this point that this festival will continue . 41 years of history. Can it continue . I think it can continue. Its the volunteers and the community that brings this festival together and i dont think thats going to be taken away by one person that decided ooting and killing children. Thats not going to stop us from doing what we know is right, which is to have this festival and have volunteers and young people come in and learn how to be volunteers and supply the money to charities and bring the community together. Reporter weve told you many times, if youve never been to gilroy, youve tasted gilroy through the garlic, right . My dad started the business 63 years ago and weve been part of gilroy ever since and were proud to be part of gilroy. Reporter thank you for your time. Well send it back to you. It was so good to hear from him. His words will have an impact on the community. The tragic loss of those lives is tough to deal with, but we cant imagine what those families have to be going through in the next months and g for the first time. Her mom saw her go down and thought she would get back up. Keylas stepdad tried to go back and get her, but told he had to leave and go get medical attention. They were separated for several hours and keylas parents didnt find out that she had died until several hours later. Earlier we spoke with keylas aunt and uncle. They are ssed im so thankful for everything. I feel like keyla, she was the only one that was able to bring all the family together and the community, its unbelievable how many people. I dont think this is real. I feel like this is a dream. Its really peaceful. Its like she was such a good little girl and she didnt deserve to die in such a violent way. I think at this point its just remembering who she was and how beautiful she was and the dreams that we had for her. Reporter back out here live. You see keylas family gathered. Officers say he drove off and hit two women on separate streets, continued on hitting some other things before pointing his car at the police. They opened fire and wounded him. He is in the hospital charged with two counts of attempted murder. If President Trump wants to be on californias primary ballot, hes going to have to show his tax returns. The governor signed that into law today. Its expected to be challenged in court. The new law bars candidates from being on the primary ballot if they dont show their tax returns, but not the november general election. The democrats second round of debates under way tonight in detroit as we speak. Elizabeth warren and Bernie Sanders are on stage. Both say their primary target is the president. Donald trump disgraces the office of president every single day and anyone on this stage tonight or tomorrow night would be a far better president. We have got to take on trumps racism, his sexism, and come together. Again, the debate continues tomorrow night with joe bidden and Kamala Harris taking center stage. We have a lot of natural ac at night. I love opening the windows. Ocean ac. I almost had to grab a jacket this morning. Seriously . I love that. Thats overboard. I stuck my face up to the screen to feel that air coming in. Thankfully nobody was watching. I probably looked interesting doing that. That ocean ac is coming in from a thin layer of fog at the coast. Right now a chilly 60 degrees. Well talk about when it heats back up again. Hey, mike. Check out this timespace wormhole i created. Hows it work . Let me see your togo, and ill show you. Burt you have my lunch. Introducing togos new hot chicken trio. The new brewpub chicken with grilled chicken, bacon, and fresh avocado. Back to our continuing coverage of the gilroy garlic festival mass shooting. Want to bring you live to san jose right now where a private vigil is taking place in san jose. These are family and friends. You can see theyre taking a moment of silence to remember keyla salazar, the 13yearold, one of three victims killed in the garlic festival shooting. Down in gilroy were going to go back to the coverage of the shooting. Theres a new phrase being used around town thats trying to raise money for the victims. Reporter yeah, its gilroy strong. We told you about those tshirts. Whats happening here around town is still beyond that state of shock, people are streaming by talking with us and stopping by and shaking our hands saying we cant believe it happened here. Like bill christopher told us, everyone is just doing okay. Thats how they responded. Were talking about that. You mentioned the gilroy strong tshirts. They went on sale. They help support the victims because money from all the sales will go to the victims and their families. One of the businesses involved is the tshirt place here in gilroy. The owner tells us all of this is an effort just to unite the community and send a message to all those people coping with this tragedy that they are alone. Everybody you can see theyre having a hard time with it, but theyre trying to move forward in order to help themselves and the people that actually need that assistance. Reporter about 500 shirts and hats are being printed. You can buy them at various businesses here in downtown gilroy, including the tshirt place. Thats a nice way to support the community. You can come out and check out that booth. Do what youd like to to be able to help the south bay. As we get a live look outside, right flnow in the eas bay you can see the blue sky. Temperatures were warm today. It wasnt extremely hot. Below average in walnut creek with a high of 84 degrees and right now 81. Were going to see things drop fast. Youll see 60s by 10 00 tonight and thats cold from that colder ocean breeze thats in place at the coastline. Theres a Little Something else working besides the fog to get our temperatures down and its all about this, a storm to the north, no rainfall, but the closer this continues to inch towards us, the more comfortable things will get as we head through the next three days. Thats why hot 100s with this area of High Pressure will stay away for the next three days. All in all, a nice forecast if you can get through that morning fog. I think you have a nice wednesday coming your way. You can see at 7 30 we have thick fog across the entire coastline. Some patchy fog here through oakland and berkeley. By the afternoon, everyone gets sunshine except for the immediate coastline, which will have some of that fog hanging on. Through the morning hours, you might need a light jacket with upper 50s and low 60s from the south bay to the tri valley. Chilly weather through San Francisco as we drop down tostt. Through the day tomorrow i see numbers going up close to average, but definitely not a hot day as we talked about that system off to the north helping keeping it enjoyable throughout the bay area. 79 in south bay. Right through the east bay, hottest weather here, go to pleasanton 85. San francisco, no way were going to get 70s tomorrow. Its widespread 60s and breezy conditions out of the southwest at 17 miles per hour. North bay, 81 and santa rosa 81. Extended forecast in San Francisco, keeps 60s as we head through the next seven days. Morning fog and afternoon sunshine. Really steady pattern up into next week. Inland valley forecast, im confident right now well stay with 80s through friday. Warming up this weekend with low 90s, but next tuesday were back down to cooler 80s. As weve been showing you over the past couple of days the entire bay area is rallying to support the victims of the festival shooting including our sports teams. Tonight the team announcing theyre donating proceeds from every purchase of garlic fries and burgers sold tonight for the relief fund. We know that garlic fries are one of the most popular items at both games so hopefully they will make a lot of money from that. They are the latest example of the bay area coming together to help gilroy during this time. We continue our coverage one last time. You can see it. s go. They want to talk about what happened and how they can help. Reporter yeah, people are helping already. We talked about earlier those Restaurant Owners helping everyone. We talked about the Community Members selling the tshirts. Everyone is in motion here, not just in gilroy, not just in the bay area, but so many people are tellingtionally from various organizations and individuals reaching out and donating money and trying to figure out in a big picture what we can do about all this gun violence. Here in downtown gilroy now theyre expecting and organizing a celebration of life on thursday night. Expecting a couple of thousand people and they want the public to know come on down to downtown gilroy. There will be a lot of restaurants. This main street will be closed down and there will be Live Performances from bands. They want to celebrate life and try to get back going again. One thing that stood out from me from bill christopher who provides all the garlic to the country, he said when you walk around people are answering pretty bluntly theyre just okay. When he asks how theyre doing, theyre just doing okay. Thats going to do it for now. That is going to be the sentiment flongo its really going to be this is never, ever going to leave the people that went through all of this. Its just not going to. Thank you. For a long time people are going to help. Over the next few days, weeks, all over gilroy, including with simple acts like this Lemonade Stand today. A lot of people showed up, including a few Police Officers. After hearing what happened at the garlic festival, i felt bad for all of the victims and everyone that got hurt and i just wanted to help them and try to raise money for the people just so people are always there for them. All the money that they raised will go to victims and their families. What a way to empower those little kids to make you feel like you have some sort of any control of destiny. Right i think for kids its important to get them out there doing something and it makes them feel safer. As we go out to these festivals, now were all going to go thinking what if something happens. I know because a lot of people we know were going to go to the festival last weekend. I think anything you can do when you can have your kids do Something Like that gives them power back. Especially when you feel so helpless you want to do something and something as simple as a Lemonade Stand. We have the Santa Clara County fair and the Sheriffs Department is going to take over that this thursday through sunday. Security is going to be beefed up all across the bay area in the coming weeks and months. Gilroy strong for sure. Bay area strong for all of us. Well see you tonight at 11 00.
