For solace for some people. Reporter it is difficult. Weve been there so many of these Mass Shootings and we know the game plan sadly. Two years ago we were in las vegas doing this, but this time these prayers and blessings theyre all for us, our community that is all going through whats happening in gilr gilroy. It is our friends, our neighbors and our loved ones. You can see hundreds of people are gathering for what should be a special and powerful night. We start tonight with the latest on this investigation. I just spoke with the fbi agent in charge here and the sheriff, including the police chief, here are some of the notable points at this hour. E arch continues for that second possible suspect. They dont know if there is a second suspect, but they continue to work toward that and continue to search. The federal agents and local agents have also searched the second residence associated with the gunman. Not just his parents home, which is about two miles away, but a secondary residence. And the fbi actively searching for clues. O they want tips and photos4 and videos of that 19yearold gunman. They gave us this link if you can upload anything to them to do so. Fbi. Gov gilroy. The most important part of the story, the victims, those that run for their lives and survived, but sadly those three young people who did not. We begin with Steven Romero who came to th0 festival with his mom and grandma. รท5 he just finishedoy kindergarten; the 13yearold from san jose. She was her with her sister and mom. They were separated. The sister and mom ran into a local neighborhood. They pounded on some doors. A Good Samaritan gave them a ride to their car. From their car they went to a local hospital and thats where they got the bad news, the sad news that the child did not s survive. Trevor was a recent graduate of a Small College in upstate new york. He was visiting gilroy with his girlfriend. The girlfriend was noddt injure but trevor was killed. So many stories here and so many people across the bay area and across the country praying for these victims. I think tonight will be a way to help people heal, to help people recognize that we care. Thats why were here. Were here to show support, to show that we understand, thats its not just centralized here in gilroy and it is nationwide and when one falls, we all fall and we stand united for them. Reporter very well said. Hundreds of people are here, but home or online, however youre getting the news, everyone thinking about gilroy tonight. Theres a lot more to deal with in terms of that suspect, that 19yearold, who grew up here in gilroy. Spent some time near the reno area. Lets bring in robert who joins us here in gilroy as well with that part of the story. Robert. Reporter its been a pretty stressful time for this neighborhood, but the profile of this suspect is coming together. Today as you heard an Evidence Collection Team of officers swarmed the legan family home and also scoured the internet for clues to why. I think its important to find out more about this person, the motive behind it. Reporter social media accounts of the 19yearold may provide clues to the shooting, including this festival picture. He used this photo to promote an author popular with white nationalists and to complain about people of mixed race and socalled silicone valley white trash. All are being examined by the fbi to determine. Motivation, ideology leanings, was he affiliated with any one or any group. Reporter search teams were at the legan home and removed numerous items, including a rifle bag. Legan used a new ak47 style Assault Rifle. It was purchased legally in the state of nevada on july the 9th. Reporter neighbors we talked to were understandably stunned. Horrible to think that thats what really happened. I heard pop, pop, pop. Reporter festival volunteer watched it unfold and took this picture of legan after he had been shot by officers, but she says the most haunting image happened before this, the look on legans face as he reloaded. He seemed calm and collected like he knew what heoqd8yt was. Scareyer, nihuh . Yeah. Reporter as you heard, there are a lot of new factors new including a nevada residence, a recovered car, and the evidence collected here. So the clues are lining up, but investigators say it will be some time before we see where they lead. Live in gilroy, nbc bay area news. Lets go back to city hall. Reporter thank you. 10 or 15 minutes. Also with us here in gilroy, we are hearing so many stories about the terrifying moments, but were hearing stories about bravery about people helping peoplexc in need. Reporter these two were headed to the festival. They ended up running for their lives, but they couldnt escape the bullets. The bullets were just gone. Everyones running, screaming. Reporter a sad Nick Mcfarland says hell never forget. He said while at the festival he watched a gunman come out of the woods. Seconds later the gunman opened fire starting with the bounce house full of kids. A bullet pierced nicks calf. Were1w stunned. I saw the gun firing to the left of us and thats when i grabbed her shoulders because she was sitting to the left of me and i threw her to the ground and when we got up, i was run, run, run. We have to run. Reporter justin was hit seven times. He showed us his wounds on his back, thigh and arm. He ran to the top of the hill, but when he realized his friends were still back at the booth, justin, who was bleeding and badly injured, went back. Nq, he found his friend in shock, unable to move. So he carried herb back up the hill to safety. He carried me. Hes my hero. Reporter a true hero. Now, i asked them if they would ever consider going back to the garlic festival. Nick and sara said no. Their experience yesterday was too traumatic. Reporting live in gilrogilroy, bay area news. Thank you. That is a good note that you just brought up. There is still no confirmation or guarantee that the garlic festival will continue. Yesterday was the 41st annual celebration. The city does not run the garlic festival. Its run by a separate corporation. They have not determined if this festival, a great tradition in northern california, will continue. If youre not familiar with gilroy, think of any hometown, any small town thats vibrant and tight knit and where supporters and Family Members come together and that is gilroy, california. Before i leave you for now, lets show you this vigil. Plenty of people behind me and on both sides of the camera and over here there are hundreds of people. This vigil will start in about 15 minutes. It will be emotional and a chance for all of us to heal at home or on site in gilroy. Lets send it back to the studio. Thank you very much. It is with community that we find comfort so it makes sense that so many people are there this evening. Well be back in a little bit. The owner of a nevada gun store is apologizing on facebook tonightor selling the 19yearo stator has been working his sources all day. He joins us now with new information and where legan bought it. Reporter our team first talked to the owner of big mikes gun and amo in nevada this morning. At the time mike said he had no way of knowing whether or not hl shooting suspect, but then when federal Law Enforcement officials traced it, they traced it back to him. Big mike posted this on his Facebook Page saying, quote, we feel so very sorry for the families. I am heart broken this could ever happen. Later, i did not know this individual. He ordered the rifle off my internet page. When i did see him, he was acting happy and showed no reasons for concern. We found that big mikes is an authorized gun dealer in nevada, selling out of is which happens to be a home in nevada, something thats very the gun was a soviet style weapon, which is how Gilroy Police identified it. Federal2y sources tell me its ak type, not an sks type weapon. Big mike sold it to legan for 700. Because it is a classified as an Assault Rifle in california, its illegal to possess it here. Because legan was only 19, he was too young to own a long gun in california under a new law that took effect january 1st. The gun comes with a 30 round magazine, but it can be used with a ten round magazine. Officials have not told us whether it was 30 or 10 rounds when he began firing, but it pehis video taken during the incident that we listened very carefully and he was able to get of at least a half dozen rounds before any Police Officers got there and intervened. Well stay on this story. Thanks for your digging so much. Upox next, calling for chanr gun laws in the wake of the festival massacre. Arguments begin in the warehouse trial. The shelter triggered a lawsuit. Now the city hasbay view distrid navigation center. It 200 beds and a community space. They plan to add 1,000 new beds. It has cooled down a bit. How long is it going to stick around . I think were good for the next four days and by this weekend things will heat back up again. Right now it doesnt look nearly as hot as what we just went through. Theres a little bit of good news. I want to take you out to one of the reasons why those temperatures did drop today. Its that fog building in at the coastline. Even a little bit of drizzle there on the camera lens. Right now in San Francisco closest to the coastline, 61 degrees. Well be dropping down to the 50s tonight. There is more than just the fog working for us today to get these numbers down. Lets get you a wide look out here. Its all about this milder system off to the north thats developed. Thats pushed that hottest air we had this weekend well off towards the east. No threat of triple digits in the forecast for this pattern. I think were back into that situation of morning fog and afternoon sunshine. As we get you ready for tomorrow morning, youll see well start off with low clouds here through the peninsula and 57. Patchy clouds for the south bay and 59. Notice some low clouds here for the tri valley and 60. Best possibility of that fog thick at times and drizzle is right here across the east bay, San Francisco and the north bay with those chilly 50s. Tomorrow temperatures right about near average and a little bit below with the way things are going right now. Youll see down here in the south bay, its going to put us at 79 downtown, and 81 towards east san jose. Through the east bay, after low 100s this weekend, were knocking it down 20 degrees. Put you at 84 in pittsburgh and right back at the bay that cooler breeze will have you at 69. Right through the peninsula, sunshine for the afternoon. I think this will leave us with a very pleasant day at 78 degrees. The fog stays put in San Francisco through the afternoon. This will bring us widespread 60s. Notice the winds will be gusty at times out of the west at 21 miles per hour. More off to the north in santa ros ro rosa, sonoma, low 80s. My extended does not have any big changes in San Francisco. I see a warmup this weekend in the upper 60s, but looking really good as we head into the next seven days. In the inland valleys, we stay in the 80s tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday. We go hotter this weekend. Right now in the low 90s for saturday and sunday. We could see more low 90s into next mondays forecast. It does warm up, but the good news not too hot. That ia sigh of relief after this weekend, which was kind of brutal with all that heat across those inland valleys. Thanks so much. We should note that Gilroy High School football team, several team members, from what we understand, were instrumental in helping one of the victims who was shot last night. We talk about this as an ongoing crime scene and investigation. Were going to show you video that we just received from one of our field crews. This is about a mile away from city hall. These are atf agents going into a car, at least looking at this car with a robot in case there are explosives inside. This car is believed to be connected to the gunman. Federal agents are going doortodoor near miller not far from where the festival happened. They are can looking at this second car that could be associated. What you need to know if you live in gilroy right now, there could be federal agents going door to door asking for tips or surveillance video. Continues. The fbi told us this is an extensive and complicated crime scene spanning a few miles and it could take several days before they leave town. Fbi, and of course Sheriffs Department and local Police Officers. Im going to send it back to you. Were going to listen in on this very powerful vigil. We will continue to be tweeting and facebooking through the night. Reporting from gilroy city hall. Back to you. Thank you very much. So many people of the community are gathered there at the vigil, but we have to remember all the people who are still hospitalized with their loved ones at their bed sides trying to go through this. We heard earlier today from that update from the hospital that five people are still at the medical center, but they have been upgraded to serious or fair conditions. Those families are still trying to comprehend what happened as they go on this journey of recovery. We will continue our coverage online at nbc bay area. Com. We planned. Its going ok . Great.
