Gilroy. Well talk more about whats ahead in the forecast, thats coming up in just a few minutes. Okay, kari, thank you. Back to that breaking news we were telling you about which we have been following for more than nearly 12 hours now, the deadly shooting rampage at the gilroy garlic festival. This happened a little before 6 00 last night, at the Christmas Hill park where that festival has been going on for decad decades. Here is the latest. Three people dead including a 6yearold boy, and were just getting an update on the number of people injured. Gilroy police are now saying 12 people were hurt. Police responded in less than a minute, and killed the gunman. Hes not been identified but sources tell our Investigative Unit the gunman was not on anyones radar as a threat. Witnesses talked about a possible second person involved but authorities are still trying to sort that out. There was an extensive search last night. Were expecting another News Conference at 10 00 a. M. This morning. Well have continued Team Coverage of this shooting. Ali wolf has details on the youngest victims. Scott mcgrew outlining how the suspect got inside the festival in the first place. Bob redell is at the scene with more on the harrowing moments. Bob . Reporter laura, the Associated Press is reporting that one person actually shouted at the shooter during the exchange of gunfire and shouted why are you doing this and according to the ap, the response was because im really angry. This shooter apparently bypassed security to get into the festival. Normally youd walk down this road, youd walk through the metal detectors, past security guards with those wands. Police tell us he cut through a perimeter fence, went through the creek, which is on the border here of Christmas Hill park, and thats how he accessed the festival. Now, a number of people say that they saw the man approach inside the northern part of the park, say he was in his 20s or 30s, wearing a camouflage shirt and hat, carrying a long rifle. A woman selling honey here at the festival tells us that two of her coworkers were shot. She watched the shooter reload and she ran for her life. Only 10, 15 feet away from us. He was loading his clip before he went to our booth, and was shooting but he was shooting rand random. He didnt pick that booth. He wasnt trying, you know, anybody in particular. It was anybody in his way. Reporter it was clear he wasnt targeting someone specific. No, he was just shooting. Reporter what was going through your head when you were running away . I dont know, run, save your life. Hoefrl ly hopefully he doesnt start shooting this way, wondering if theres any more and why would somebody want to do this. It doesnt make sense. Why would somebody want to come in and kill innocent people, you know . Reporter and that is a great question that Law Enforcement is trying to answer. Gilroy police engaged the suspect within a minute after he started shooting, and officers shot and killed that man. Coming up in a half hour, 5 30, well hear from a man who is running a rock climbing gym for the children here, and what he did when that suspect started shooting. Rorng li reporting live in gilroy, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you. One of the three People Killed by that gunman is a 6yearold boy. Stephen romero was killed. Two other members of his family as well were shot. Nbc bay areas ali wolf is live at the Community College in gilroy with more from the little boys father. So tragic, ali. Yes, really tragic, laura, just to think about the fact that a 6yearold was killed while having a good time with his family at the garlic festival. We know that 6yearolds name is stephen romerromero. His father describes him as a happy boy who had his whole life ahead of him. His mother was shot and so was his grandmother as well at the festival. This according to his father Alberto Romero who reached out to nbc bay area and also shared photos with us of stephen. Roberto says his son had just turned 6 this summer. He was at the garlic festival yesterday with his mother and grandmother, when they all got shot. It was the end of the day, the final day of the popular festival. Alberto romero says he found out about the shooting while he was on the phone with his wife. So i was asleep, she called me and i first thought she said that they ran him over, but then she started screaming, obviously she was shot herself, that they shot him, and they took him from her, and she didnt know where they took him. Reporter and you could imagine the shock from that phone call, and what his wife is going through. Stephen romero died last night at st. Luis hospital. Alberto romero says his wife was shot in her hand and he thinks his motherinlaw was shot in her leg. They were taken to a separate hospital in san jose to get treated for their injuries, but they are expected to recover. That is some good news, but really a huge tragedy, three members of one family shot at the garlic festival, and of course, 6yearold Stephen Romero killed, just absolutely heartbreaking. Coming up at 5 30, well have more from that interview with Alberto Romero and more on what his wife told hill. For now were live in gilroy, ali wolf for today in the bay. Seeing little stephens photo just pulls at your heart. Its a family event. Thats the thing. Its the 41st annual gilroy garl festival. We talked about it all last week here on today in the bay. I know. So enpla people, at least 100,000 people attend that event. When the gunfire erupted, i found out quite quickly and i headed actually to the scene, i got as far as i could to do reports, but there were so many roads blocked off here, this is leading up to Christmas Hill park but there were literally people on almost every Street Corner as you were driving in to gilroy last night, just gathering, congregating, wanting to be together. So many people that were coming out of Christmas Hill park that i was talking to, they were numb. They didnt even know how to comprehend what they just experienced. I was just going to say that. You heard a lot of people talking yesterday when we saw the coverage here, they were just in shock, even when they saw, they heard the shots or they saw people running towards them. They say they were in shock. They didnt know what to do. It was an eerie feeling. It stays with me as well. There were helicopters circling overhead and so many Emergency Personnel rushing from scene to scene and still that concern of that second gunman, so people literally are terrified this morning, too. You were in some of the neighborhoods and great job what you were doing out there. What was it like for the people who lived nearby . There was a fear of the potential other suspect. They were scared. They were scared. There was such heavy Police Presence from multiple agencies throughout the bay area and people were scared. They didnt know if someone was going to potentially go into their own, knock on their door. And there were so many false stories out there as well because of that fear, trying to sort through that as well. Were trying to give you the latest information as well this morning. We should get more information this morning. Theres a press conference happening at 10 00 a. M. Weve been showing you a lot of video. Scott mcgrew has been looking over all of those maps to give us more perspective of whats going on here, what happened that day. How did he get in . You showed, marcus, the folks this one earlier but it gives viewers a broader look at the area. You have the garlic festival here in Christmas Hill park. The Emergency Responders staged here, and that was triage and emergency command center, et cetera, and then families told to come down to the college so they could be reunited with their loved ones. As for the festival itself, we understand from the Gilroy Police chief that the suspect or suspects crossed a creek. What youve got is youve got the festival about right here and the creek runs right along there, so cross in from the creek they say,he shooting then happened near a rock wall, a climbing wall, which is about right here. Lets listen in as police start their frantic search. We think the suspect might be in the creek south of miller. Hes wearing camouflage hat, camouflage uniform and hes got, uhm, a long rifle, with a removable magazine. Police shot that man in camouflage. They were able to respond within one minute of that first alert. As it happened, there was a Police Substation on the north side, very close to where we think this shooting happened. Lets go back to that radio, as they report the suspect is down. We have a shooter down possibly in the northeast, corner of the park. Uhm, headed north of the compound. Thats what we know about the geography. Gilroy police will have, as you were mentioning, a press conference at 10 00 a. M. As brg you the updates when we inly have them. Thank you very much, scott. Police still remain at the scene this morning and fbi agents are involved. We are expecting that News Conference at 10 00 this morning which well bring to you live on air as it happens, most likely well stream with it as well. Stay with nbc bay area news for the latest updates and find the latest on our website. Were also tweeting out and facebooking any new information that we can gather for you this morning as well. 5 10 for you right now. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the weather and traffic for us this morning, double duty. Yes, we are going to have some good news here in terms of our weather, cooling down across the bay area. Thats a live look outside at the golden gate bridge, no fog here, and also it looks like traffic is flowing smoothly coming out of the north bay. Now as we get a look at our temperature trend for cupertino today well be in the mid60s at 9 00 and going into the mid70s at lunch time. Were going to stay in the mid70s there throughout the day, so much cooler air. As you get ready to head out the door in dublin weve had quite a few issues coming out of the Central Valley into the trivalley, and so weve seen still a steady flow of traffic there, and so it may be quite a long time before they get that issue cleared up on westbound 580 into the bay area, but you can see overall on our traffic maps, everything is flowing smoothly for much of the bay area. I wanted to take you into those spots, where on 580, 205 where they join up there is a lot of traffic in this area, because there was a big rig crash and a fuel leak is going to take possibly another three hours before they can get that cleaned up, so if you have someone coming out of the Tracy Mountain house area, a lot of problems. We have around Christmas Hill park area in gilroy, those streets are still closed so avoid that. Your trivalley drive times are starting to add up here on westbound 84 from vallecitos road to i680 its about ten minutes, one of the slow spots were seeing right now. Lets get started this morning as we see a nice, beautiful sunrise over the south bay. We are going to start out with some clear skies and the good news on this monday morning is that well have some much cooler temperatures. Check out the sevenday forecast up at the bottom of the screen. Its already showing some low 80s and even as you step out the door in martinez, you can leave the air conditioning off, give it a rest for a little while, as we have some low 60s through 7 00, and then rising up to about 75 degrees at noon. At 1 00, were at 78 degrees. Lets check out our high temperatures for today with concord reaching 86. Napa up to 82 degrees, and San Francisco seeing a high of 64 degrees this afternoon. So whats happening here . We have High Pressure thats been over the desert southwest. Its starting to back off and thats what created this intense heat we had for the inland valleys over the weekend. As we go into today, as well as the next several days, this storm system starts to approach the pacific northwest. It will bring seattle and portland some more rain by the end of the week, but for us, our winds turn onshore and the fog builds near the coast, so thats going to push that cool ocean air into even the inland valleys, going into today as well as the next couple of days, but we will still also have that fog that could create some drizzle near the coastline for the next several mornings. Our high temperatures will reach into the mid 80s in some of the warmer spots and just slightly cooler tomorrow. Well also see it going up a few degrees on wednesday, and then back down on thursday, but it will be very warm as we approach the weekend, with San Francisco staying in the mid60s, and want to get you a quick view of the san mateo bridge, as you get ready to head out the door. It looks like everything is flowing nicely here, and overall view of the bay area on our traffic map shows that we do for the most part have a pretty good start to this monday morning. Weve only seen a few minor issues except for those drivers coming out of the trivalley, out of the Central Valley into the trivalley. On the 580 westbound there was a sig alert crash, a big rig that caused a fuel leak so theres been a big backup. It may not be until 8 00 when they clear that up. So looking at that and also our bridge drive times. Its going to take you a while westbound 80 toward the bay bridge about 13 minutes at this point so starting to slow down. Well get a look at weather and traffic coming up again in a few minutes. Sounds good. Well look forward to it. 5 20. Coming up on today in the bay a looming battle. Thats a look at 84 and headed into the bay area. On 680, were going to see possibly new delay there popping up, but the big problem has been 580 and 205, where theres a sig alert. There was a big rig crash, and theres a big backup coming out of the Central Valley, into the trivalley. If you have someone coming in on westbound 580, it may take a long time, it may not be until 8 00 to when they can get this cleared up, and get this road flowing again. So well continue to track that, and also a look at that cooldown in the weekend forecast, thats coming up in about six minutes. Thank you, kari. 5 32 and that breaking news that we have been talking about all morning long, that shooting that happened yesterday, the deadly shooting at gilroy garlic festival. Simply tragic. It all started a little bit before 6 00 last night at Christmas Hill park, where the festival had been held for decades. Here is the very latest. Three people dead, including a 6yearold boy, and we just got an update from police, the number of injured now 12. The gunman was also killed. He has not been identified. And witnesses talked about a possible second person involved, but authorities are still trying to sort that out. Police did respond to that shooting in less than one minute. They scheduled an update thats going to come up for us at 10 00 this morning. Bob redell there live at the scene this morning and has more on the peoples experience as they were dealing with all of this as it happened. We have Team Coverage of the shooting. Ali wolf has the details on the youngest victim. But lets start out with bob redell who you mentioned at the scene. He has more on what people experienced. Bob . Reporter laura and marcus, one man who was here at Christmas Hill park behind me in gilroy says that what he witnessed yesterday was horrifying and when he first saw the gunman, he said he knew that he was ready to do some damage. Those were his words. His name is ryan wallace, were talking about the witness. Hes from auburn, he was running the rock climbing equipment for the children here. He thought the first shots were fireworks. Then he spotted the gunman, says he was wearing a vest, a long sleeved tactical shirt, cargo pants, boots and he said he just put his gun up and started spraying rounds all over the place. Wallace wanted to run but he felt responsible for those children on his rock climbing gym. One of the kids equipment and we had half of them up there, and so i was pulling them out, trying to get them out. Instincts kicked in, get the kids out and be safe. That was all i could really think of doing. Just kind of trying to decipher everything out in my head. Reporter yeah, what do you do now . Exactly. You just got to have your friends, decompression, make sure you got your loved ones. Reporter ryan wallace eventually ran and hid under a trail we are some of the other vendors. They obviously came out once they knew the scene was safe for them and they werent hurt. Within a minute of the shooting Gilroy Police say their officers shot and killed that suspect. Coming up at 6 00 in about a half hour ill have the brief exchange of words between another witness and that shooter. Reporting live here in gilroy, bob redell, today in the bay. Bob, thanks so much for that update. One of those three People Killed by that gunman, a 6yearold boy. Its so sad. Stephen romo row was killed and two other family members of his family were also shot. Nbc bay areas ali wolf live at Gilroy Police headquarters with more from the boys father. Ali . Reporter law va, so heartbreaking to think about, a 6yearold, so young. His life cut short while atenning a familyfriendly festival on a sunday evening, early in the evening. Stephen romo rows father tells us he actually found out about the shooting from a frantic phone call from his wife. Stephens mother had also been shot and he also tells us that the grandmother, stephens grandmother was shot as well, really tragic to have three members of this family shot and of course, the youngest killed in this shooting. Now, this is all according to alberto romo row who reached out to be nbc bay area and shared photos of stephen with us. He said his son had turned 6 this summer, calls him a happy boy who had his whole life ahead of him. He was at the garlic festival yesterday with his mother and grandmother when they were all shot near the end of the final day and we told you alberto found out about this shooting from a phone call from his wife. Take a listen to what he had to say. She knows, she was here earlier when they told us, but they took her, they made her leave. Reporter and he was still in shock when he spoke to us last night. Stephen romo row died last night at st. Luis hospital. Alberto romero tells us his wife was shot in her hand and he believes his motherinlaw, stephens grandmother, was shot in her leg. They were taken to a different hospital in san jose to get treated for their injuries. We dont know much else about the other two people who were killed in this shooting. Hopefully we do learn more throughout the day, but just really tragic all around. Coming up at 6 00, in the next half hour, well have more from that interview with stephen romo rows father. For now were live in gilroy, ali wolf for today in the bay. So tragic, so sad. Thank you, ali. Police there still at the scene this morning, and now the fbi agents as well are getting involved. We are expecting another News Conference at 10 00 this morning, which we will bring it to you live on air as it happens. Stay with nbc bay area for the latest updates. Of course, you can always find the latest on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. 5 37. We want to get a look at weather and traffic together. Kari hall pulling double duty this morning. Yes, we can get an overall view of the traffic maps this morning, as you get ready to head out on the road. We are seeing overall a pretty good flow of traffic, but weve had a big problem this morning, coming out of the San Joaquin Valley on wound 580. Weve seen where it meets up at 205. There was a big rig crash and then there was a fuel leak, so thats caused significant delays and it may not be until 8 00 when they get this cleaned up, so i think the morning commute is really going to be a big problem there, coming out of tracy, and in the bay area, your bridge drive times on westbound 80 looks like it will be at about 13 minutes, and westbound on 92 to the san mateo bridge, at about 12 minutes there, Everything Else is flowing smoothly, and then also the bridge drive times from westbound 80 on the bay bridge, about 13 minutes right now at this point in the trivalley, where weve seen the biggest backups. Once again the problem on westbound 580. So from grant line road to 680, we are going to see about a 25minute delay and so we are also seeing some more of those delays starting to stack up, but everything is looking good on mass transit, so if youre getting ready to head out the door, catching b. A. R. T. Or the ace train, that may be a better issue a better alternative to driving this morning, as you move into the bay area to get this work week started. There you go. In the meantime a little bit cooler today than it was over the weekend. Much cooler today, and then as we go into the weekend, its going to start to warm up a few more degrees, so we are going to see our temperatures from the mid 80s to the low 90s as we get closer to saturday and sunday, some low 90s, but it wont be as hot as this past weekend so thats the good news there, as we check out San Francisco, were going to see San Francisco staying in the 60s and then about 70 degrees on sunday. If youre thinking of going to santa cruz this weekend, looks like a nice one. It will reach into the low 70s by saturday and sunday. Were just seeing a few clouds here and there, and highs reaching up to 74. In the squaw valley area, parts of the sierra looks perfect. Mostly sunny skies, 76 degrees for friday, and then up to 80 degrees on sunday, and if youre making plans to go to napa valley this weekend, it will be warm, reaching the upper 80s all weekend long. Well talk about whats going on today with our forecast and another look at traffic coming up in about three minutes. Ing looking forward to it, kari. It is 5 39. Coming up next on today in the bay a look at the rest of this mornings top headlines including new overnight a funeral in italy for the Police Officer allegedly killed by two north bay teenagers. Up next, a live report from mill valley on what the suspects are telling investigators. Compare comcast business to your current provider. Thats a live look outside at fremont at 880, and we start out with some upper 50s, going throughout the day. Its going to be much cooler and the temperatures reaching into the upper 70s this afternoon, and an overall look at our drive times across the bay area, looks good but weve got a big issue for drivers coming out of the Central Valley into the bay area. Back to our breaking news, the shooting rampage at the gilroy garlic festival, were hearing from witnesses who were inside the festival during those terrifying moments. Patrice wallace, one of them, was actually saying she was getting a sandwich from a vendor when she heard the gunshots. She ran with her 4yearold and her husband to safety. They were hiding in a trailer, then this happened. We stayed in the trailer. We were screaming, we were praying, we were doing everything, and so it stopped, so we thought after a while it had stopped, it was safe to come out. As soon as we tried to come out of the trailer, there were more rounds fired. So we went right back into the trailer and we stayed there until it absolutely stopped. Once it stopped, again, we get out of the trailer. I go outside of the trailer, and there was a guy standing there one of the vendors, and he said maam, you have a 4yearold baby, the girl right there. Please turn around and dont let her see this. Theres a little boy coming. I dont want to you see it, but i couldnt turn away but i turned my baby girl away, and as im looking, i see this baby boy thats about the same age as my daughter. Just tough, tough to listen to. Wauhs two other children ran to safety in another part of the park. Thanks to uber that family was later reunited at a shopping center. Suddenly a mistake by the state bar is throwing everything up in the air. Last thursday, the bar inadvertently leaked to 16 Law School Deans a list of general exam essay questions. After realizing that mistake on saturday, it sent an email to the test takers apologizing for the confusion. The email gave them the same information about those essay topics. Some experts now feel that this round of test takers have an unfair advantage. The people that have a real gripe here are those that have h failed the bar exam in the past because they did not have this type of advantage, because the bar exam was always something that you had to study very heavily for, and its a very difficult exam, and having the topics prior to the test certainly makes it much easier. People who are going to take the test also are furious. They say its unfair, especially for people who have spent months and months studying while other test takers have procrastinated.
