Tonight the principal on their high school is speaking out. Also tonight, were hearing from italian investigators that the two teens are telling confli conflicting stories. According to the charging documents, both suspects, finnegan lee elder and Gabriel Hjorth told officers different versions of the alleged crime and are accusing each other. Investigators say it began when an italian man called police for help claiming the two men had stolen his backpack and were asking for money and drugs to return it. Two Plainclothed Police officers arrived it mee the a de wrong. The two suspects struggled with police. Thatsthe e officer was stabbed and killed. Police say the two suspects then ran back to their hotel, packed their bags and were set to leave the country when they were arrested. Elders neighbors are still in disbelief he could be involved. Ive never seen him violent. Ive never seen him so much as push or hit anybody. Or yell. Ive never heard him yell. Reporter in a statement, the principal said, we were stunned to learn that two members of our community were arrested in the connection of a killing of a policeman in rome. He went on to offer sincere condolences to families and friends who lost a loved one in this tragic situation. Meanwhile, in rome, thousands of mourners are lining up to pay their respects to the slain officer. The funeral for 35yearold Mario Cerciello rega will be held on monday the same church he was married in month. Probably doesnt feel like a big difference but the trend is turning cooler especially around the inner bay as those onshore wednesday make a comeback, eventually low clouds spilling back across the bay. Humidity levels which have been in the teens all afternoon inland are starting to recover. Some of that marine air spills inland. For a couple more hours, got a heat advisory for the inland east bay based on the current trends, mthis may expire before 11 00 tonight. He later died at the hospital. A witness says three of the mans friends flagged him down to call 911 right after it happened. Kids ranging from 7 to 14 years of age took part in this. It was in redwood city. More than 20 former nfl and College Players taught the children fundamentals that can help them play the game and deal with life. We just want them to have a fun day and a day where they get encouragement, feel lifted up and, you know, just have a good time. This is the third annual camp of this kind held here in the bay area. A close call for people onboard a pleasure boat near the carkenas bridge last night. The boat crashed into the eastern jetty near the entrance of the river around 9 30. See the pictures right here taken by a responding coast guard crew. Crew treated three people for head injuries and did get them to safety. Its significant. Its going to take some time to get an edge off the heat. The heat advisory still continuing for the inland east bay. Technically until 11 00 tonight. Based on the temperature trends i wouldnt be surprised to see this might expire a bit earlier tonight. Thats the good news. As temperatures have been quite hot today. A high of 101 degrees in concord now. 94. Nd cooling breeze. Very slowly cooling breeze there at 13 miles per hour. Youre seeingsco. 64 degrees. Warmer start to the morning and sunshine early. Allowed us to get into the 70s today in San Francisco. See san jose didnt quite get to the 90s at the airport. 8 w8 the high. 81 currently as the wind speeds start to pick up. Good news for air qualitow. No heatow improvement for air quality. As youre about to see, improvement on the hot afternoon temperatures inland. One thing to watch, though, youre getting a sneak preview right now. Wind speeds picking up 15 to 25 miles per hour. Ocean airconditioning breeze with strong High Pressure from the Desert Southwest starts to move off toward the east. That will open the door to these onshore breezes. Area of low pressure in the Pacific Northwest will flatten out the ridge of pressure and keep temperatures more mild. The item to watch, even though its marine air, carries a little more moisture, across some of the hilltops, things are still pretty dry. Gusty at times. See these areas of purple and red, may see gusts tomorrow close to 35 miles inland, a little stronger, perhaps, on the coast, as the workweek begins with cooling and some breezy conditions. The low clouds. Some drizzle possible around San Francisco and the coast next couple of mornings. A friend of mine has been texting to me, she has been this is secondhand information, shes been texting with her sister and her sister says they were there, everything was garlic festival, everything was fine and fun, all of a sudden, there were there was hiding. Withs sister was and the person i was texting hiding there. I tell you, looking at this video, one thing you can see, you dont see a whole lot of people. This is the last day of an extremely popular festival. I dont know where everybody theres some more people over there. People running away from the gunshots and getting out of there. And, again, some people hiding. And 11 people down. Have been 11 people down. Were also getting reports 11 people shot. It could be just some shot and some injured from the from the run. From the running, trampling. Were going to keep an eye on this for you. We have a crew on the way. Like we mentioned, at this point, still really early in this whole event, so its hard to say. We said 11 people shot, we have it on good authority, 11 people down. So some were shot. Some possibly trampled. Some, you can see people running from the area of the shooter. Some moving fast. Some just moving slowly. But getting away from the sound of the gunshots at the gilroy garlic festival. This, we first got a report of this about 20 little bit before 6 00. First got wind of this. And were still trying to figure it all. Bl ambulances have been dispatched. 11 people are down. This looks like cell phone video shot by someone who was there. You can see people running in different directions. Clearly, panic. Confused. Very limited information at this point. This is an annual event. Wildly popular. Threeday event. Today was the last day. It was supposed to end at 6 00. And like terry mentioned, we got wind of this just before we came on the air today. At that point, we just heard there was a shooting at the gilroy garlic festival. Now there is speculation on social media, many of details, though, unconfirmed by law enforcement. We do have a witness on the phone right now. We do want to go to this person. Who is at the garlic festival. Were being told that it is the mayor of gilroy. Oh hello. The mayor of san jose. Hello. My names amir. Tehello. Okay. Youre at the garlic festival and what were you doing and what did you see or hear . Well, me and my couple friends were on our way out. We were by park drive and its like a little walk where people could walk. We were talking down and heard, like, maybe five it. And then at oney us and cops that were there told everyone to run. And we all started running. So, yeah, it was, like, five or six shots and we didnt think anything of it until one of the my gosh. You mentioned the cops, the police officers, who were there, told you to start running . Yeah. Well, i think there were i think there was, like, Security Guards that were blocking off the streets for parking. So they were cops or security. Were there a lot of people there . Could you sort of give a ballpark of the crowd . How big was the crowd at that time . Like, well, at the festival, thousands of people there. And when you saw when the Security Guards said start, you know, run, run yeah. Were there people being knocked down, was there tampl g iere already outside. But everyone that was already outside told us to run and we started running and the Security Guard were over the radio that shots were fired and within seconds, cops were, you know, coming really, really, like, fast on the street. When you first heard the sound, did you realize right away that it was the sound of gunfire . When we first when we first heard the sounds, the first five, six shots, it didnt sound like gunfire. That was, like, fireworks or something. Until we heard the one bullet fly by us. We heard the little whiz of the bullet. And, you know, thats when we realized something was wrong and, like, within a second or two, the Security Guard told everyone to start running and started calling the cops. Did you see anybody with a gun . No. I think the person with the gun was inside the park. We were already outside. All right. We ran had to be terrifying. The sound of a bullet whizzing by within earshot. How far do you think it was from you . How far did it seem . I was farthest behind. I could feel, like, the wind from it. But i have no idea. It felt i heard it really close. Oh, my god. It was it was close enough to make people start ducking and sprinting. All right. So you ran you just ran. I mean, did you run for the parking lot . Did you get in your car . I mean, where are you now . Whats going on . We we ran to the car and got out of there. Were all safe and sound. We called the rest of our friends, see if theyre okay. And, yeah. And are all your friends okay . You gotten in touch with them . Yeah. Yeah. All of our friends are okay. They all left. So were fine. Zamair, what time would you say this all happened . Like, 5 30, 5 40. Were looking at video from garlic festival. This is a very, very calm group of people walking, no one running, from the scene. Yeah. Were just hearing from zamair that the shooting took place maybe 5 30, 5 40. We first heard of it here about, you know, 10 till 6 00 or Something Like that. This video you have to think would be after that. Very calm, cool, collected, people walking out of that. Right. You see a lot of people on the phone. On the phone, you see them. I think what happened and what we thought, we thought it was fireworks. We didnt think anything of it. It was five or six repeated shots and i think people slowly started realizing it was actually, like, an active shooter. Now that youve realized that it was gunfire, you got out of there, you had the Security Guards screaming, run, run, i mean, what are you thinking, what are you feeling now after shocked, you know, like, we werent expecting this, especially at, you know, a town like gilroy. As we were saying about gilroy garlic festival, its a fundraiser. Helps a lot of charities every year. Huge crowds. Everybody goes down there. Its all great. Funny. Its garlic. Garlic ice cream. Garlic everything. Yeah. And to have to have this at the end of the last day of it is just it just really sad, bad turn to it. Zamair, thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. It was you and a group of friends, correct . Yeah. Can i say one thing . I noticed that when we got in the garlic festival there wasnt really tight security. There was no metal detecters. Security guards were barely using their wands to wave people. I think thats something that should really, like, keep in tight because i dont think they did a good job on that part. I mean, i understand its a town thats, you know, gilroy is like i think they should tighten up security because there was no metal detecters for anyone. They were they werent doing is that correct . No, like, there was no metal detecters or anything. Security guards had, like, their wands. Right. But they they didnt really use them. Were they checking purses or backpacks or bags . Like they do at the ballpark . They were checking purses and backpacks but they werent checking, like, actual people, like here and there, but not everyone. Wow. Theres one main entrance, correct . I think theres two. Im not sure. Okay. I think its on the same road. Okay. Zamair, thank you. Again, this festival in gilroy at Christmas Hill park. About 30 miles south of san jose right off 101 there. So as zamair just described to us, he said hes wanitness. He was there with his friends when they heard the gunfire, five, six shot. They thought it was fireworks then they felt a bullet just whizzing by and they heard Security Guards screaming, run, run. They took off. Went to the parking lot. Got in their cars. Got out of friends also at the festival. Making sure that those guys were
