I have to do jimmy can you give any scoop, or no i have to do like a few finishing things with it, but im just relieved. It took me four years now to even feel at a good place with this album and its just because i had such huge moments that happened in my life personally that how was i going to capture that and how was i going to actually feel good about what i was saying so i just i kept going, and im relieved now [ cheers and applause jimmy is there a genre that youre leaning more towards in this album of music . Well, i think theres always going to be a sense of strong pop in my music, but i definitely explored more with electric guitar. A lot of more soulful tracks underneath things, Acoustic Guitar it all kind of hits different places that i feel like is my lane for music its just live in that world and mellow jimmy you can do it all. I mean, you really nail every one, but when you perform live ive seen you perform live so many times do you like doing these kind of ballady serious songs or talking to your fans or do you like the pop, dancing songs . Yeah, id say the more emotional connection for me for sure jimmy yeah i love everything that i get to do and be a part of, but specifically, something that connects with people on an emotional level is my favorite jimmy the thing you did with julia michaels, i just personally i loved. Anxiety, that was so great thank you jimmy i loved it so much, i was like i just, i love your voice. So i was listening to that, and i love hers. And i was like, what a good combo. Yeah, well shes actually been my writing partner for over four years. Jimmy really she and i had our first big number one together on good for you. Jimmy oh, thats right yeah. She also wrote a new book called more than enough claiming space for who you are no matter what they say, which is out today its fantastic please welcome Elaine Welteroth, everybody. [ cheers and applause jimmy party, why not thank you for being on the show im a big fan of you thank you for having me jimmy congrats on the book, more than enough. I want to get to that. But first i want to just talk about you, thats why youre here oh, my gosh jimmy and i want to hear more stories from you. But you were the youngest editorinchief ever of teen vogue. And youre also the second, i believe, africanamerican editorinchief in all of conde nast this is true. This is true by the way, im your biggest fan by the way [ cheers and applause jimmy no, no, no i really am its a big deal to be here so thank you for having me jimmy i love, but that just, saying that right there gives me chills. Going like, look at you. Look at what you did i mean, is that a lot of pressure on you . Do you even like listen jimmy do you think about this at all . You know, anyone whos been first to do anything will tell you that it comes with a real responsibility jimmy yeah and a unique opportunity to do something thats never been done before. If you lean into it, and if youre able to bring your authentic self to the role and i feel really proud of the work we were able to do at teen vogue. Mostly to really wake up america, and wake up adults to the power of young peoples voices jimmy sure because they get such a bad rap for being so selfieobsessed, and for only caring about like, the kardashians, and you know they do care about the kardashians. They like selfies. But this is the most politically engaged, the most socially conscious, and the most diverse and informed generation of young people since the 60s jimmy yeah and they [ cheers and applause jimmy i feel that. Yeah. And theyre smarter than theyve ever been given credit for. So it felt really good to be a a part of a platform that elevated those voices. And im just really proud of what we were able to do at teen vogue, and really to change the face of teen vogue. To make it an intersection where you could care about fashion and politics jimmy yeah, you can do both because women do, right jimmy yeah, youre allowed to [ cheers and applause yeah, you can do both. Yes jimmy can you believe you actually did something that you when you were a kid, wanted to do its crazy. Jimmy you used to make magazines with your friend right . I did, so embarrassing. Yeah, when i was like in fourth grade, i would make my own little magazine with my friend and i remember we would draw girls in fashion, and then we would put saran wrap on top, for the glossy feel. So that it was luxury. [ laughter ] jimmy the glossy feel. Yes jimmy saran wrap and then what would you do with the magazine just look at it, and look at your work . Yeah. And then i also had a photo album that i was obsessed with, that i would just stay up all night curating and then when people would come over, id be like, do you want to look at my photo albums . And theyd be like, no, girl. [ light laughter ] lets play barbies. Jimmy that sounds fun. But i was obsessed. And its so funny, cause you know, then you go on this journey. Im like, what should i do with my life . In college i had this, you know, College Crisis like we all do at the end of college. Like, what am i here for what am i going to do with my life and then i looked back, and i realized ive always been a magazine editor. You know ever since those days of playing with my little photo albums jimmy yeah so but i never dreamed that someone like me could be in this kind of a position. And so, once i found myself, you know, fighting my way to have a seat at the table and then at 29, 30, i was at the head of the table. And then i was like, you know, ive done everything i came to do in this industry. Ive done more than i could have ever dreamed of as a small town girl from california. You know what . I can dream a bigger dream and writing this book is part of my next chapter and i realize, im ready to build my own tables. And this is my first table so, im really excited jimmy wow, i love that [ cheers and applause im really excited about this jimmy more than enough. Can you explain what that means, or what this book means yeah, well jimmy what do you want people to take out of this when they read it well, you know, when i was working on this book, i read a a stat that said that young girls confidence peaks at age 9. And jimmy is that serious . Yeah. Jimmy for real it was sort of heartbreaking to me. Jimmy 9 years old . 9 years old jimmy oh, no and when i started to think about my journey, and the stories of all the women i know, it was actually less surprising cause i realized weve all kind of were born into the world with so much possibility, and limitlessness, and all this confidence jimmy yeah i certainly was when i was that fourth grader with my own magazine, and my own business in the backyard. But over time i think the world chips away at that confidence. And were told were not pretty enough were not smart enough were not sophisticated or, you know, successful enough. Were too old. Were too young. And it really limits the way we see ourselves. And it limits our ability to dream. And so what i want this book to remind young women, and women of any generation, is that you are already more than enough even if you are a work in progress no matter where youre from. No matter how big your dream is and i think women need to start telling our stories to share these tools and these gems with each other because theres too many conversations were not having with each other. You know, we live in this age of social media, where were scrolling each others Success Stories online, but were not telling the whole truth. So i wanted to share more of my truth in this story, hopefully make it easier for the next generation jimmy yeah, i love that. [ cheers and applause thats what im talking about. Thats what im talking about. Thats why i love you. But i cant believe im on fallon though. Jimmy i have two little girls, and im telling you, its people like you they should look up to and emulate. Oh, thank you jimmy and youre going to make their lives better. So i love that youre doing what youre doing. And its just so positive, and so smart thank you jimmy and i think its so necessary. Thank you jimmy so thank you for doing this i also want to talk about project runway because yes jimmy im a fan of that show and i know are you jimmy oh, of course. I mean, from heidi klum days yes jimmy that was my girl, yeah yes jimmy so and karlie was on the show, right. Jimmy karlie kloss has been on the show. Yeah, i love you said that it was fate that you guys worked together yeah, it was sort of this fateful connection a year before i got the call to be on project runway, karlie kloss just popped up in my life. I kind of i came out of the house on a sunday. I was late for church. Jimmy yeah, but explain this, what you were wearing. I was trying to hide out. I was in a hoodie, and i was kind of in a grumpy mood and id come out of my house, and its the new York City Marathon so the streets are filled with people jimmy thousands of people. Thousands of people and then i think im incognito, right . Jimmy yeah then, all of a sudden, i hear, elaine, elaine and some blonde girl is waving her arms like this and shes like two feet taller than everyone else and im like, karlie freaking kloss . [ laughter ] like, what jimmy how did you find her in the middle of the new York City Marathon exactly jimmy she was running the marathon she was running the marathon, just happened to be by my house in brooklyn at that very moment, that very second. And we both were like, that happened for a reason. We knew each other casually in the industry for many years. She was a model, i was an editor jimmy sure so, wed circulate. But then we were like, ive got to sit down with you, and so we did. We sat down, and fell in love with each other. And we were like, we have to Work Together. I dont know what it is. Jimmy does she remember that of course you kidding . This was like our first date we fell in love on the first date [ light laughter ] jimmy running the marathon, and she sees yeah, yeah. I mean, it was kismet. And then we were like, okay, we got to Work Together i dont know what the project is and then seven months later i get this call, and here we are on project runway together jimmy explain, cause i like project runway, because you give these designers all new you basically set them up. You give them a great opportunity. Even people that dont win, i got to be honest, because everyones watching them its so true. Jimmy and theyre going, oh, i like that person no matter if they win or not. Yes jimmy but the winner gets a good deal. A really good deal. Jimmy with elle, right a cfda yeah a cfda mentorship a feature in elle. And look at christian siriano. His business is massive. Jimmy yeah, from the show. Totally and i think what im most excited about with project runway is helping to push it into a new era and to make it a part of whats happening in the world outside of fashion and to kind of increase conversations around diversity and inclusion. Im very proud to say, it is the most inclusive seasoof project runway ever.
