It is time for our weekly chat with chucked to, moderator of meet the press, of course and nbc bay area political analyst. Nice to see you. Same here. Thanks for joining us this morning. We know you have an exclusive coming up. But we want to start with the democratic debate, which is a few days away. Look, i expect look, on night one i think it is an interesting test for Elizabeth Warren who basically is starting to become the second place candidate right now. Seems like she is starting to inch ahead of sanders in some of these key places. And, so, suddenly shes the most prominent candidate. If biden is the front runner, warren number two. What ill be curious about, do the other candidates treat her as a front runner, or do they sort of go with her and start maybe targeting others that are in their way, maybe going after biden. Obviously, the second night is going to feel a presence of joe biden. And a lot of the candidates there, the brand names, may even focus on biden. But i think the unpredictable nature will be what do the yolo candidates do . The ones that may only get one shot at the debate stage. And how much time they take up, too, right . How much time and do they try to break the rules . Do they try to do things to attack, you know, single out others to bring attention to themselves. How they do that because they want this viral moment certainly presents an extra set of challenges for those of us trying to moderate this thing. Chuck, last week seven Senate Republicans voted with democrats against President Trumps weapons ban to saudi arabia making it the second time they are different from the president. With so many Senate Republicans up, are we going to see more agreements between now and the president ial election . I think only selectively. And i think only in certain places. Thats one of the few. Mitch mcconnell is also up in 2020, larry. You know what that means. Hes not going to put any vote on the floor that he thinks hurts him. So i think at least until his until the filing deadline in kentucky passes and he knows hes not going to have a serious primary challenger, and i dont think he would, but, you know, he got primaried six years ago. I think hes walking that line. So because the Senate Majority leader himself is up in 2020, i think every vote that gets put to that floor is through the prism of whether or not mcconnell thinks it helps or hurts his chances of staying leader. I do think there. But you brought up saudi arabia. The president id push him on this saudi arabia relationship. And he basically had no he unflinchingly says there is one reason to overlook this behavior x and its money. Staying with the weapons ban, is it another facet of the president s effort to contain iran . How likely is it that that plan will work . Well, obviously, that is part of it, you know. But whats happening, you could argue, in the middle east is going to be a continue proxy war between the saudis and the ar n iranians. You could say thats a cold war of sorts for deck kids. Yes, in that sense when the United States helped saudi arabia, the rational is about making sure it continues pressure on iran. But the fact that, you know, what is the line of where you overlook bad behavior by an ally . And, look, this is transactional politics, whatever you want to call it. This is certainly a place where the president is comfortable being this transactional. Thank you for joining us. Larry, nice to see you. Make sure you join chuck for this mornings meet the press. Tune in at 8 00 right after this newscast. All right. Larry will be back in 40 minutes for our political segment. Coming up the race to become the democratic nominee for the 2020 president ial campaign is heating up. Political analyst rejoins live in studio to break down the two debates that are just days away. Coming wednesday and thursday between 6 00 and 8 00 p. M. , nbc bay area will air the first set of democratic president ial debates featuring 20 candidates. Nbc bay area political analyst joining us with a preview of what to expect. We need a graphics package to fit them all on the screen at the same time, which is why they had to be broken into two different nights. Maybe a bigger Television Set for everybody. There is a good reason for all this because this is the kind of event where you just have to put expectations aside and just kind of take it all in, chris. I mean, it is that big. But we already know a couple of things, especially because of the random Selection Process of determining which candidates will be on which nights. On wednesday, senator Elizabeth Warren will begin as the best known of the candidates that night. Shes second place now behind joe biden in recent polls. Amy klobuchar, corey booker and those on the periphery have to find a way to climb up that popularity ladder. They will have such an opportunity that night and they better take advantage of it. On thursday we might see more fireworks because joe bidden, bernie sanders, camera harris. So biden will attempt to keep his position by staying above the fray and saying how hes the most likely candidate to beat donald trump. While sanders and harris try to narrow that gap. And Eric Swalwell is part of that thursday night group as well as others that register at or above that 1 in popularity. These folks have to move up or face elimination in september when the bar goes up to 2 . Folks at home might be saying were a year and a half almost away from the election. So isnt this a little early to be taking and debating with all of these candidates . As a matter of fact, it is. Thats what we thought. The first democratic debates for the 2016 president ial domination occurred in october of 2015. So that means that the democratic debate, the first one in 2019, will take place four months earlier than the last set. So lets talk about why were seeing this elongated process. It is not just because there are so many, right . No, no, no. Pretty important factors come into play. First, there are more ways to get the word out today than ever before. Candidates focussed on the three networks, radio, newspapers remember those things, newspapers . But Cable Television greatly expanded candidate opportunities. And now its even more opportunities in Campaign Venues such as social media, facebook, twitter, instagram and a host of others. Second, a second point with so many candidates and so many ways to communicate, they must start earlier to raise money for their campaigns. Hiring staff, even doing ads, travel, other campaign activities. They all cost big bucks. And then there is this. President trump filed for reelection the day after he took office, the day after. He and Republican NationalCommittee Members have already raised 100 million. In fact, the Trump Campaign raised 650 million in 2016. But that amount pailed next to hillary clinton, who raised almost twice as much, 1. 2 million. So this in itself, chris, is a reminder that the most money made and spent doesnt always win an election. Given the fact that we are starting to much earlier, four months earlier than the last time around, how many folks do we expect will watch this debate . If we only knew. Its hard to tell. Thats all there is to it. But we do know this. A couple of things. It is reasonable to assume that democrats and independents will be more interested. That makes sense. Who already have a candidate, President Trump without any serious competition, mind you. The president , as we know, is very popular with republicans. Among democrats, it is an opportunity to see the candidates discuss see issues like health care, infrastructure, Climate Change and Foreign Policy issues ranging from trade to iran and north korea. If nothing else, this will be an opportunity for the voters, especially democrats, to decide which candidates resonate and which do not. I think there will be limited opportunity for that. If you have ten people talking, how do you get a word in edge wise . Every candidate will have his or her little thing to say. Its going to be difficult, difficult to mine it. But at least people will be able to see these guys and gals and manage to put a name with the face. Yeah. And see them against each other. If you want to get to know these candidates better before the debate so you know what you are looking for, you can go to nba bay area g. Com. Still ahead, a bear found napping in a very unusual place. Look at this. How the bear ultimately got out. Hes so calm. Thats wild. My dog is not a bear, but he likes to hide and then i got to hunt him down. San jose temperature trend. We will warm up into the 80s by midday. How hot are we going to be today . Eventually San Francisco will warm up quite comfortably. This is the reason why. We had that High Pressure thats been dominating all weekend long. Yesterday was pretty hot and sunny outside. Were also keeping those conditions clear. Now, keep in mind that any time we are talking about hot temperatures, there is a lot of dry brush out there. That makes for a risk and high fire danger. M. , too late to go hiking because those temperatures will warm up ickly. Please dont take your pup with you on that hike. Its a little too hot for them. Not just your pets, but also each other. Here is a reminder of safety tips to keep in mind. Wear a lot of sunscreen, take frequent breaks. I do not like reporting on those hot car situations.
