Going into the free skate, she told me she wants to stay in her own bubble and not worry about the distractions of having a rival. She has warmth and presence and beautiful Technical Skills on the ice, as well. She can create that moment this rivalry transcends nations and sport because you can marvel at the art and beauty that is ladies figure skating. And the battle. I like that. A special feel to that last night. Lets talk about the americans. Disappointing, struggling a little bit. You have mirai nagasu with the triple axel chenilshe nailed in team event. It was so good in the team event. She had a tough warmup. You could see it on her face. She hit the ice pretty hard. When she was walking off, they had the camera right up there and you could see the worry. Its hard as a skater. You use that sixminute warmup as your last pep talk before you go on the ice. And she didnt have the confidence to pull it off. The great thing is, we have a free skate to go. Knowing mirai and how gutsy she is, i think shell get angry and go out there and hit it again. Mirai nagasu said her focus was on the team event. There is nothing that would make us believe that she wouldnt be able to do that again in the ladies free skate. What is the big announcement . How about vonns downhill run . She did everything she could. Put two seconds on Mikaela Shiffrin, who is right in the mix. This was an exceptional run by linld lindsey. She had something to prove after the downhill. Its if she can carry the confidence and momentum into the slalom. What about mikaela . She looked a little out of sorts. She looked like a rookie. She made a mistake on the traverse on the top. She skied really well as the course went on. But those mistakes at the top really pushed her back behind lindsey. Shes not used to flying down downhill runs. Two americans in the mix bigtime. Can lindsey vonn turn back time in the slalom . And can Mikaela Shiffrin show the world who the real slalom queen is . We await the americans and send you up the hill to steve perino. Still the same story, lindsey vonn, who is pulling into the start right now, didnt do a whole lot of slalom training between runs. These are her final games, shes going to continue on that alltime world cup victory held by ingemar stenmark. Lindsey really wants a go at that. She will continue to ski beyond this games. Each of these, you see the 1. 72 gap, thats from the downhill portion. Shes skiing good slalom but its earned in the downhill. Looks like she will take over the lead. She does by almost two seconds. If you were with us for the downhill run by Alice Merryweather, we talked about being added to this Olympic Ski Team on february 3rd, selected to compete at these games for a replacement for the alpine skier who was forced to withdraw due to injury. This is a lot happening in this 21yearolds life in a very short period of time, getting the call for her first olympics. Down she goes for her second olympic run. Merryweather is not a slalom specialist. But shes quick off the edge. And that youth, i cant speak about how nice it is to be young and ski stllalom. I tried to stay with it. And you feel so much slower. She looks quick, even though shes not a slalom specialist, shes able to make the quick turns. Merryweather, trying to take over the top spot, from the boston area, began skiing the age of 4. Attended Stratton Mountain school. She plans to enroll at dartmouth at the end of this year.
