Colder temperatures this morning. Yes, cold again, another morning with near freezing temperatures for parts of the bay area. So you watch out the door, you will want to head back in for more layers. Here is a live look in san jose. This starts out with clear skies. As we go throughout the day we will be in the mid 50s by 10 00 and quickly seeing those temperatures warm up into the upper 60s today. Thats going to be above normal for this time of year. 69 degrees in downtown san jose and also in concord and napa. 63 today in oakland and in San Francisco. We will talk about a rainfall deficit thats coming up in just a few minutes. Mike, you were saying theres still more problems around the san mateo bridge. Thats right. First of all, we had the motorcycle crash mid span, we didnt get the all clear from the chp or bridge crew but did see traffic start to move. San mateo bridge is slow along that flat section. Now, some more folks have hit through the hayward area and may have shifted through the dumbarton bridge as an alternate and in that theres a crash south 880 at industrial parkway blocking lanes there. On the peninsula the other side of the san mateo bridge we have a crash north 101 around broadway slowing you in towards San Francisco. We will give you a bigger look coming up. To the latest developments out of florida this morning. Thats where people are still trying to grasp with what unfolded there this week after the death of 17 people in a shooting rampage. This as investigators now say the suspect has confessed. Last night thousands attended a vigil in parkland. They remembered the victims including a football coach, a future College Swimmer and a National Merit scholarship finalist. The devastation felt by an entire city and the calls from School Leaders for change. Now is the time for us to enact some common sense gun laws in this country. Investigators are revealing more about the 19yearold suspect. They say he took an uber to the school he once attended with a legally purchased Assault Rifle hidden in a duffle bag. The suspect is now on suicide watch. President trump is expected to visit parkland tomorrow. Happening today, many Tamalpais High School students will march after school to raise awareness. The students against begun violence had a vigil last night. They say they plan to turn their sadness into action. Write your could think men, write your senators. Do something. Okay . Like we are we are like teenagers and we still can make such a difference. Its sad and i cant imagine what its like for the families. Those students want stricter gun control laws. Happening today parents will rally at a south Bay High School against the construction of portable classrooms. They say it will just add more students to a campus thats already busting at the seams. Sharon katsuda is live at Don Callejon School. They say its not just about overcrowding but they say about equality. Reporter good morning. Yes, thats right. About equality theyre saying and this rally is expected to start in a couple of hours. Some parents contacted the nbc bay area Investigative Unit saying they believe the district is overcrowding this school to keep test scores higher at the districts other middle school. Parents at Don Callejon School say instead of putting more portables on their campus the district should open enrollment at our middle schools and pay for the busing for students to get them there. They say by overcrowding one campus they are failing to meet the needs of underperforming students and they are accusing the district of doing this on purpose as a way to keep test scores higher at other campuses. For some reason they are choosing to make the student population at Don Callejon Middle School their density to be almost ten times that of the student population density at the highest performing school. There is a 200 person wait list at peterson. I say why is there a wait list because they have all kinds of property to put portables on. Shouldnt everybody had portables, especially if they have more space. Reporter here is a look at santa claras unified student density. At Peterson Middle School there are 18 students per acre compared with don callejon which has 134 students per acre. Buchser has 32 and cabrillo has 37. They say about the portables, quote, this was not an easy decision for the board to make, however, the sentiment expressed by the board was to avoid displacing students to middle school sites further away from their homes and felt this was the best and most fair interim solution. The district is planning to build more campuses by 2020. Im sharon katsuda, today in the bay. California lawmakers including several from the bay area are introducing measures aimed to better protect renters from evictions. If the measures eventually pass, landlords would face tougher thresholds to evict, requiring them to present just cause. The tenants would have more opportunity to meet rental commitments before facing eviction. Another bill would extend ellis act eviction notice period to a full year. Thats from the current 120 days. They say she is most likely the first winter olympian ever from that Central Valley city. She played soccer growing up, saw skeleton for the first time in the 2010 olympics, thought it looked cool and gave it a shot for the first time just a few years later. It worked . Especially the last couple weeks because it has been processing where we get the fun gear and moving into the liech village and getting up here and theres cameras at the track, usually its a couple parents and coaches and no one around so its been pretty entertaining today. As folks come across or head up the peninsula towards San Francisco. A lot of slowing, two lanes are blocked by this crash. Possible injuries as well as maybe a leak of some fluid on the roadway, thats one complication. South 880 the other side at industrial it looks like they may have cleared this crash from lanes, we are watching slowing on the san mateo bridge as well. A crash in san jose was cleared to the shoulder for slowing just north of 880 on highway 101. A lot of people have been talking about it, a historic premiere. This is a whole new ball game. Yeah, very exciting time for fans who are watching the black panther movie here at the bay street amc in emeryville as oakland native ryan coogler made a surprise appearance, he is from the bay and he is the director behind the black panther movie. We are going to see moments in this twitter video that as hes in there he tells a crowd that it wasnt too long ago that he was in those same seats watching movies just like them. This theater is super important to me. I spent quite a bite of time here watching movies in these seats right here in the theater, you know, watching movies nonstop. We are going to have some changes ahead, an area of low pressure with some older temperatures and gusty winds dropping in between late saturday night and sunday. Now, this will bring some snow to the sierra, slight chance of light snow flurries for the far north bay and some of the Higher Elevations and then very cold air moving in early next week. Now, that san mateo bridge builds for the volume and there was an earlier crash it looks like its been cleared from the traffic patterns and our live camera. South 880 more folks shifted over possibly getting toward the dumbarton bridge and there was a crash at industrial. I dont have an update from chp but it looks like from the traffic patterns that thats clearing. We have the metering lights turned on here, the backup at the toll plaza itself, we only have those fast track lanes, the cash lanes are really light right now. New this morning a suspected car thief in serious condition after police say he drove into a group of parked cars in santa rosa. Police just posted some images of the crash, happened a little after midnight. Police say the suspect had stolen the car and neighbors who witnessed it were following him. The car struck seven parked vehicles at high speed, the driver was ejected. His injuries, however, are not considered lifethreatening. Continuing coverage for you of the Florida School shooting, this as a community of parkland continues to try to fathom those events that happened there. Reporter in parkland, florida, 17 lives destroyed in a place which we expect to be safe. My heart is broken for everybody else. We have many, many friends who we have lost and know and kids all know. Reporter family and friends are sharing stories and memories to help us understand all who have been lost. All of these people have greater intentions and had had great intentions and had a bright future. Reporter there was the new u. S. Citizen, a boy in the junior rotc, and a beloved coach who died so children could live. He died saving his students. He died saving them. Without him some kids wouldnt be able to go hug their parents and say, im alive. Reporter the 19yearold accused gunman is now on suicide watch in the Broward County jail after his first court appearance. Are you Nikolas Jacob cruz . Yes, maam. Reporter investigators say nikolas cruz took an uber to the school he once attended armed with a an ar15 rifle in a duffle bag. They say cruz slipped out with innocent students, went to wall mark and mcdon before patrol officers spotted him. Pulled my vehicle over immediately, engaged the suspect, he complied with my commands and was taken into custody without any issues. New video this morning of a medical airlift in eastern contra costa county. Emergency responders say the female victim was assaulted. According to the east bay times that woman was struck in the head with a baseball bat. This happened a little after 8 00 last night on Kellogg Creek road. That video you are seeing was vote in Discovery Bay where emergency crews transferred the victim to a waiting helicopter. There is no update on her injuries at this hour. Students at Willow Glen Elementary School will return to class after a popular teacher and class was arrested. Police say he took inappropriate pictures of young girls at the school. Bob redell is live in san jose with how authorities found out about this, bob. Reporter it was parents who first became suspicious of clifford pappadakis, a former track and field coach at willow glen middle school. They say they saw him taking suspicious pictures of female students, that was back in september. This week he was charged with a crime. On wednesday police tell us that pappadakis turned himself in to police, he now faces seven counts of annoying and molesting a child, which is a misdemeanor and one count of possession of child pornography which is a felony. Pappadakis is 47 years old, he is a husband and father himself. Used to teach pe and coach track and field here at willow glen middle. Was known as coach p. To students and parents. The district placed him on administrative leave when parents reported him back in september and started its own investigation which prompted the police response. Pd tells us investigators found a number of inappropriate images after searching pappadakis home, computer and other electronic devices. Here one man who lives near pappadakis. He has been a real good neighbor, real nice guy, no indication of any that. Reporter its not clear why charges werent filed until now even though authorities were first aware of the alleged crimes back in september. The four all black u. S. Army units were stationed there after the spanish american war. 400 soldiers never left the location and are buried at the cemetery on sight. We talked to a tour guide about the soldiers dilemma. They fought for freedoms around the world but returned home to inequality. This is the worst part of this fridays commute. Unexpectedly jammed up north 101 to broadway, two lanes still blocked and jammed coming off of the san mateo bridge which is trying to move smoothly despite the fact there is a lot of traffic coming off of 880. There may be another crash south 880 near a street. The dumbarton bridge moves nicely. In the south bay slowing north 101, earlier crash at montague is on the shoulder, you see the little slowing on the 101 at the top of the screen. The bay bridge metering lights are on and its now starting to see things mill in of course. Picking up for a friday morning. Waiting in the traffic can give you time to think about the weekend. It will be like last weekend where saturday was nice, it was warm sunday, those winds started to pick up and the temperature dropped, too. So its going to be just like that. I think saturday is your best day to get outside with mid 60s for the bay, the coast 62 degrees, nice and clear inland, up to 70 degrees by sunday the clouds start to roll in, winds will pick up and temperatures will be dropping throughout the day with highs into the mid to upper 50s. It will be not the best way to get outside. One of the events you might want to check out tomorrow in san jose will be the lunart4pw new Community Day and thats going to be perfect with highs near 71 degrees. We will hit that High Temperature right at 3 00. Make sure you are enjoying that with all of that sunshine. Also if you are heading down to santa barbara, upper 60s today, today is actually going to be the warmest day because even there its going to be cooling off by the end of the weekend 62 degrees. And much cooler, look at the difference in lake shasta between saturday and sunday. We go from 60 degrees to 40 degrees. Of course thats most likely when you will be driving back to the bay area, but if you are driving back from the sierra make sure you have the tire chains because on sunday we could start to see that snow coming down. Upper 40s for the next couple of days, but we will only hit a high of 34 with some blustery conditions and snow coming down so that could reduce your visibility. Going to yosemite this weekend more of the same, a high there on sunday only 32 degrees. The cafeteria at Northgate High School in walnut creek is back open. This after a dead mouse was found on valentines day. That discovery prompted an immediate closure. The Health Department revisited northgate thursday morning and the building was found to be clean and in compliance with all safety standards. Also new this morning, parents looking for options after it is announced that el crystal elementary in san bruno will close, the latest out of a School Board Meeting from yesterday. The board is looking to close the school at the end of this Academic Year in june. We reached out to officials so see if rolling wood elementary is still on the chopping block. We are waiting for an update on what the decision is for that campus. The district closing the schools because of budget shortfalls. The daca debate has turned into a disaster. For us mostly dry conditions with a slight chance that there could be some snow flurries on those north bay Higher Elevations and overall looking at cold and windy weather into the start of next week and we could also see some freezing temperatures which would be a big concern because everything has bloomed and all of this warm weather. Jammed from 92 up toward that area 280 a lot clearer. San mateo bridge more traffic but starting to ease up on the hayward side. The dumbarton bridge is a great option as well. If you are coming over from Castro Valley you could use that san mateo bridge and get over toward 280 to take you around the backup.
