Check out the speed in this final layback. Theres small great details for Satoko Miyahara but jump cleanliness has always been an issue for her. I love the music, i love her skating. She picks up the subtlies in every note. And i find her a beautiful artist. Like you said, a delicate butterfly. A hummingbird. But again, when you look at her jumps, theyre just not at the same level as some of the skaters you will see later. However, the ladies so far are bringing it in the team competition. The gentlemen had a little bit more trouble with their jumps. The ladies are sticking. Well, satoko wants to be in medal contention in the individual event. Thats why her coach is telling her to get off the ice. Shes like, no, one more. National champ of japan four straight years and a silver medal at the World Championships in 2015. Couple of skaters to go, including Kaetlyn Osmond of canada, next. Back with a look after the short dance which just leaves this Ladies Short Program to go to move on to the free skates, thats the list. Canada, u. S. , russia, japan and italy. That was her triple lutz triple toe combination. Both jumps receiving an underrotation. The triple toe loop looked all right from one angle but not the other. Watch this in slow mo. Its like jumping on a trampoline at the wrong time. She gets so little height. You need to have spring and use that rhythm to get the vault into the air, and thats a technical problem she needs to go back and look at. And when you are prone to underrotations, the Technical Panel will watch extra close on every jump that you do. Bad reputation to have. 68. 95, so she is ahead of bradie tennell, so guys, does that come down to the components . Yes, it does, and its only by 0. 1 that shes ahead of bradie, but those performance make all the difference. In the team event, the points dont matter. Placement matters. There are the teams. No empty spaces now in those team boxes, except, well, japan right there and they just got done, so theyre on the move. The shibutanis who we saw earlier on the ice dance and now watching Kaetlyn Osmond, 2014 world silver medal yes, part of the team medal in sochi at the olympics and then the silver medal at the 2017 World Championships. Guys, this is her specialty, the Short Program. Were all in for a treat. Shes one of the best technicians here, completely opposite of what we just saw from satoko. Shes got such hang time. Watch this. Look at the speed, the power going into this triple triple. Goes for it. Sometimes her jumps get so big, it gets out of control. She also has a very rolled forward shoulder when she gets nervous, and that triple flip was her classic mistake. Shes got to bring it back, though, for this triple lutz. Just watch the height she gets, though. This Short Program is a masterpiece, choreographed by lance vipon. Shes had her for two seasons now and this last step sequence, guys, is brilliant. Its these moments that make it so great. You can tell the audience is immediately engaged. Well, shes usually a Short Program specialist. Today she had that bobble. She said she always struggles with the nerves, with mental focus when it comes to the technical elements. And thats why shes never on the top of the podium. She could compete with the best of them. But even with those mistakes, her technical score currently very close to that of Carolina Kostner. That turn between the triple flip and the triple toe loop, the first jump element, is definitely hurting her on the grade of execution, how well she performed the element, but both jumps were judged as cleanly. And that Short Program is just breathtaking. Its my favorite of any of the ladies in the last few seasons. Will it top kostner . Well see. Carolina kostner in the lead right now. So well get the numbers for Kaetlyn Osmond. One skater left, evgenia medvedeva. Hi. Hows it going . Alright, how ya doing . Welcome so, this is the allnew chevy traverse. What do ya think . This looks better than 99 of the suvs out there. Its very modern. Sleek. Maybe the most impressive part of the allnew traverse. Is whats on the inside. Surprise what are you doing here . Ive missed you guys. I havent seen you guys in so long whats happening . We flew her out. Its a family car, we had to put your family in it yeah, it gets 7 thumbs up tonights primetime broadcast was presented by visa. Team canada waits. Carolina kostner of italy leads. Is it going to be close here . Its going to be close, i think, if she didnt make those two mistakes on her jumping passes. Right here was the opening triple triple. You see the turn in between. The triple toe was called underrotated. The triple lutz went off of the wrong edge. The lutz goes off the back outside edge excuse me, that was the triple flip. Sorry, that closeup on the legs. Here the triple toe loop, watch, very underrotated there. She was second best in the world last year at the world championship. 71. 38, so not enough to even really get near Carolina Kostner and Kaetlyn Osmond, even though the matters dont matter here in the team event, the placements do, so its italy, canada, japan and then the u. S. Bradie tennell in that fourth spot. If you want to watch the best skater in the world the past couple of seasons and the skater who has defined dominance in figure skating, watch this right now. Yevgenia medvedeva, just 18 years old from moscow, but coming back from a foot injury. And thats the only question mark. She lives for the fight. She loves competing. She is the Gold Standard for ladies figure skaters. She set the Short Program up so that all three jumping passes are in the second half, different from anybody weve seen. And the most difficult. Get that 10 bonus. You also notice that genia jumps with her arms over her head. The first jump with one arm, the second with two. Jumping with your arms over your head makes the element so much more difficult. Your center of gravity goes way up around your head versus around your chest. A solo jump coming up right here. Nothing fazes this girl. Oh, that got close on the double axel. Sometimes shell miss a double axel out of all of her elements, the easiest of them. Its not her strong suit. Absolutely breath taking, Yevgenia Medvedeva. This is an olympic champion in the making, and were at an olympic games, guys. It all came together in the last couple of seasons. The timing absolutely perfect until the fall when she fractured a bone in her foot. She missed two months of competition. Came back in january to the european championships and took on her training mate, only 15, also from russia whos turned into a big rival. She was defeated there. So she came here to pyeongchang and people said, well, which one will we see . Which medvedeva. And perhaps we just got an answer. Well, at the european championships coming back after that injury, she looked a little bit rusty in certain areas, maybe with her conditioning and nerves. But she looks reborn in so many ways here in pyeongchang. Every element aside from that double axel that made tara gasp was absolutely brilliant, on another level. Heres her triple flip, arm over the head. Very subtle, look at the flow in between both those jumps, both arms over the head to make it even more difficult. And this, the triple loop absolutely stunning. Not an eyelash out of place. This is olympic ladies level figure skating, breath taking. If shes ever going to miss a jump, its the easiest one on this double axel. Look how she didnt get much height on that. But somehow she is so good, she was pulling that off. Shes such a competitor, johnny. Just think about it, terry, just as you said, undefeated. Then her little teammate, a junior lady last year, you know, comes onto the scene this year, is on fire and beats her three weeks before the biggest moment of her life. Its been that way for russia the last several years. Elena sodikiva comes on. An overnight sensation after the team event in russia. Remember she was on every billboard, every commercial and now shes not even on the scene. You may remember her as the little girl in the red dress at the sochi olympics. With all of that pressure put on her shoulders after the team event, she struggled in the individual event, but Yevgenia Medvedeva has that air about her, nothing will come between her and these moments at the olympics. You saw what she needed to lead and she just sailed right on by that. 81 and change and the wide smile now on the face of medvedeva. That is the highest score ever. And well deserved. Amazing grade of executions on every element. So, the Ladies Short Program comes to an end, and medvedeva, as expected, as hoped for so many who have followed her the last couple of years, wins it. Carolina kostner terrific in second, caitlin oz monday, Satoko Miyahara ahead of bradie tennell. Its the difference between the u. S. Getting seven or six points. Overall, though, here you go. Heres how it stands. Canada, the olympic athletes from russia, the u. S. , japan and italy the top five. They qualify and will move on to the free skate portion of the team event. The u. S. In a great spot to try to win a medal here teamwise. Your takeaway from what you just saw . Yevgenia medvedeva is here for an olympic gold medal. She was stunning from start to finish. The individuals, im really looking forward to with her and that rivalry with her younger teammate. Its going to be the hunger games. Theres a lot going on today still. Youve got the pairs free skate portion of the team event. Earlier you had the ice dancers, the shibutanis. I know you guys were here watching. What are your thoughts on what you saw . And the u. S. overall chance to look ahead and medal in the team competition. We were grooving up there during the dance, but the u. S. Has an awesome opportunity in this team event to take silver or bronze. I think canada has set themselves in a Different League than russia or the united states. But the u. S. Is fighting real hard. The u. S. With a good chance, right . Yeah. Im not cheering for them, im just asking because a lot of people doubted it after nathan chen and that opening Short Program. Bradie tennell terrific today. Medvedeva just terrific. Kaetlyn osmond, the canadians overall do lead it. Still to come, that pairs free skate and the knierims, who are terrific in the short. All right, terry, tara, johnny, thank you. The medals in the Team Figure Skating determined tomorrow. Also tomorrow well see Mikaela Shiffrin for the first time here in south korea. But do not go anywhere. We have much more still ahead tonight. Heres the plan. Those of you who live in the mountain and pacific time zone, just hang right there.
