Say an Airline Announces a sale. The bot will reserve all of the cheapest seats before anyone else has a chance. You get burned when the airline computer, which lives on the laws of supply and demand increases fares for the left over seats. They make the systems kind of confused. They throw them off. The bots are working for Online Travel agents. They are exploiting how an airline seat can be headlight held, but not bought free for 24 hours. The bots make dummy bookings and make up passenger names and then repeat the trick every 24 hours or so. This is a constant battle for some airlines theres thousands of requests every day. They hold thousands of seats. We asked what happens to the dummy seats . She said, the fringe travel sites sell them somewhere in between the low fare they are holding and the higher price the airline is charging. Its clever. And they know unsuspecting buyers will be found. Whoever offers me the best price. I dont believe its a big issue. This man founded farecompare. He has not seen bots doubling up seats. But he agrees that if they are, every day consumers are probably paying more than they should. If the inventory goes away and its cheap inventory, theres less cheap inventory for everyone else that is shopping. We asked the airlines if they are taking action to combat bots. None responded. Distil said that more than five Dozen Airlines have confidently hired her team to take down the bots. That they are airlines that you fly with often. Distil wants you to have a heads up. Third party ticket sellers are supposed to support travelers, and a bot based site may not fulfill that responsibility. Be careful before booking on a site that you never heard of just because its a couple bucks cheaper. If you end up buying the bot tickets, you dont have access to direct communication with the airline either. Meaning that if your flight is cancelled or delayed, you dont get that information. Right. And not having that info could leave you stuck at the airport after a delay or cancellation.
