First time this has happened in a long time. Also means jobs, jobs, jobs. Taking a live look at washington, d. C. This morning. We all worry about the next big earthquake, especially since we have several fault lines running through the bay area. This morning we have a better idea of what would happen if a massive 7. 0 earthquake hit on the hayward fault which runs from san jose to berkeley. Today in the bays thom jensen is live in berkeley to explain that impact of such a large earthquake if we had one right here in the bay area. Well, we had that 6. 9, i remember it well, thom. Reporter were here in berkeley outside the football stadium here on the cal Berkeley Campus because the hayward fault actually runs right down the middle of the stadium here, right through the through the football field. So if there was an earthquake here this would basically be ground zero, there could be significant damage here and this simulation looks specifically at the hayward fault and this new super computer simulated and earthquake with that type of power, a 7. 0 magnitude like you were talking about or something close to it. There wasnt been anything from a 6. 7 to a 7. 0 here for quite a while, since 1868, but they say that theres a one in three chance there will be in the next 30 years. This new simulator model shows widespread damage to buildings, roads, railways and utilities in the east bay following that type of event. It also suggests a ten second quake along this fault would spread across the entire bay area and be felt for 90 seconds as it spread across the bay area. The red and yellow an orange colors that youre seeing on that simulator are places where the Ground Movement would be the most significant. Orinda, moraga and areas east of the fault would experience the most shaking according to the simulation. More than areas west like oakland and berkeley. Now, theres always a couple things you have to remember. Just to be prepared for a quake like this, if you do find yourself in an earthquake, drop and take cover. Its recommended not to stay standing up. Stay away from windows if you are inside. Try to find a desk or table or something to take cover under and always keep an earthquake kit around with nonperishable foods that are up to date, water, spare clothes and a flashlight. You can also find these small kits, this one is from the red cross, it has a 12hour light that you snap and it stays lit for 12 hours, a little bit of water and if you get caught buried in rubble or something waiting to get help, helps rescuers find you, keep one of these at your desk and your car, maybe even in your kids backpacks for school might be helpful as well. Were live in berkeley, thom jensen, today in the bay. All right. Right now as we approach 6 10 it is a chilly start. Lets go to livermore right now where our temperatures at 7 00 heading out the door for school will be at 44 degrees, but it does warm up quickly and another day with some mid 70s in the forecast. North 87 at capital expressway reports of a fenderbender there, waiting for chp to arrive and give us more detail. Even 101 just mild slowing north of 280 and 680. The east shore freeway we are still just under a half hour from highway 4 down through berkeley and the berkeley curve, thats where things really bog down, getting to the bay bridge toll plaza where we take a live look and after a couple you have very slow incidents to clear across the incline we have had recovery. Im tracking yet another report for that bay bridge westbound approaching Treasure Island. You can see those taillights move smoothly, though, up the incline and around the tower. I will keep scanning the reports and our live shot coming up. In Business News this morning more market mayhem. I watched the tapes, a look at these numbers the dow saw its second largest point loss in history on thursday. The first biggest point loss was earlier this week. Dow down more than 1,000. Now, the irony here is all of this is caused by fears in the economy, its growing too quickly. Now, the stock market is not the economy, those are not the same thing, but the economy, tax breaks, 1,000 bonuses have contributed to fears the economy is too hot and Interest Rates might go up and thats why youre seeing the numbers. Twitter and facebook making news this morning. Facebook says its testing a down vote button instead of liking something you can disapprove of something. Say somebody says something insulting in the comments below your post. Its not clear if the down votes will make those comments disappear. Facebook is still playing around with the idea. We will talk about the south bay and look at the slowing coming up. Back to you. Breaking news, a live look in washington where the latest federal shutdown is over. About one hour ago President Trump announced that he signed the budget. Officially ending that shutdown hours after it started. But the deal to get there, well, it went into overtime. The house only voted to pass the deal at about 2 30 our time pacific. Senate passed it four hours earlier. It increases domestic spending and suspends the debt ceiling until march of 2019. Latest federal shutdown is nearly includes fund to go keep the government running through the tail end of march. It also limits any major disruption that would have come in a lengthy shutdown. Cleanup happens in washington, also cleanup in the bay area. Right now one of the busiest roads on the peninsula and parents are being affected. We brought this to you as breaking news yesterday morning. There was a water main break that caused a lot of flooding along el camino real. Today st. Matthews school will be closed again for repairs. Today in the bays kris sanchez live in san mateo to explain how much this could be a cost to not only the school, the church thats there but all the homeowners in the area. Reporter hi there, laura and marcus. You can see they are making progress on the cleanup at st. Matthews Catholic Church here in san mateo. They scraped out the mud and the water is mostly gone, but if you look over this way you can see that the crews are still working on that pipeline. This is nearly 24 hours after that line burst. It was afr pipeline that was tw feet across, so were talking about a lot of water in a little bit of time. It took about 12 hours for that flow to go from a river to a trickle and only then could crews start looking to repair the line that was damaged and also figure out the reason why that line failed. By then water was inside st. Matthews Catholic Church and inside the school gym which was brandnew. The water rushed through the gym and into the homes and cars on the other side, aragon boulevard, where the asep family lives. I was like, oh, god, thats where my car was parked. My sons car is almost under water. I yelled to him put some pants on, forget your shoes, run out and get your car out of it. You can see where the water level was. Reporter several folks had feet of water in the basement of their homes there on aragon boulevard, but this could happen to any one of us, we all have pipelines, water, leading to our homes. So the question is if Something Like this happens will your insurance cover it . Nbc bay area consumer investigator chris chmura has done a lot of work with this and he says that car flooding is almost always covered, so good news for the asep family at least. Flooding inside the home is generally covered when the party is caused by Something Like a leaky dishwasher or broken water heater. Storm flooding is largely not covered unless you have federal flood insurance. In this case the flooding was caused by another agency like cal water and thus may not be covered as the Insurance Company could argue that the Water District is the agency liable for that damage. The best advice is to consult your own homeowners or renters policy for the details there, ma i can a couple phone calls. The good news here is that this is making progress and we could see things getting back to normal in time for sunday mass and also in time for monday class, although i did talk to a little second grader who didnt have too much of a problem being off with her dad for the day yesterday and i guess she will be doing the same thing today. In san mateo, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Probably a scramble for parents who have to work, though. Theres some safety concerns rattling a north bay neighborhood this morning. The search continues for a fifth suspect after two violent home invasions. Yesterday you see the s. W. A. T. Teams there and police, they filled the streets of santa rosa. Investigators say a crew of armed men and women targeted two homes in santa rosa yesterday. They were looking for marijuana. Detectives later spotted the suspects van in vallejo where three people were arrested but two got away. Authorities eventually the caught one of the suspect who took off and Law Enforcement this morning still looking for one more suspect. Happening today you might find yourself facing more traffic problems, possibly even road blocks, thats because the bay area playing host to World Leaders and californias top representative. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be meeting with governor jerry brown and Lieutenant Governor gavin newsom in San Francisco. Really big news for 49ers fans, the offseason really off to a great start after the team signed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a longterm good money deal. Its a story our own raj mathai broke on twitter yesterday morning. Today in the bays bob redell joins us live at levi stadium to explain what the team is doing today to make it official. Reporter good morning, laura. Five hours from now at 11 30 at levi stadium Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers will hold a press conference to talk about and answer questions about this fiveyear contract extension that now makes him the highest paid player in the nfl. As you can see in this video released by the team yesterday, garoppolo and his family arrived back to the bay area by a private jet for this mornings official announcement. The 49ers will pay garoppolo 137. 5 million over the next five years, which comes out to 27. 5 million annually. You will recall the 49ers acquired garoppolo last year mid season in a trade with the new england patriots. The 49ers then went 50 in the games in which he started as quarterback. Generating a lot of buzz for a team that had until then a losing record. In an article posted online the 49ers said that they believe that they can use garoppolo as a prime selling point to lure other top talent in the nfl to their franchise to convince those players that this organization is now stable and the 49ers also think that this puts them in good position for the upcoming draft, considering that they dont have to look for a quarterback now. If they get the ninth or tenth pick in the first round they can be in position to lure other top talent that are not quarterbacks. Reporting live here outside levi stadium in santa clara, bob redell, today in the bay. What a deal, right . You know what his agent said, show me the money. Right. Exactly. Live pictures for you right now from at t park and just a reminder for you tomorrow is giants fanfest. You can meet the players and the coaches and check out the field. So much to do. If you walk from the south bay maybe you should leave now. But theres no traffic. Traffic just starting to build for 101, 87 and 85 show the signs of the morning commute so does 280 at the 880 17 interchange. Some pattern as any other day of the week but its friday so a later lighter start. As we look at the rest of the bay everything moving nicely. Hayward, south 880 and west 92 the san mateo bridge over toward the peninsula a typical build there as well. These are just a little lighter than we typically see except for highway 4, there is a crash westbound highway 4 right around san marco boulevard, slows you through bay point. A nice drive over to and through the east shore freeway. Slowing near berkeley of course. Talking about the city with the giants fanfest, but also remember if you take muni there will be congestion with the chinatown festival. It is going to be a great weekend. We have had such warm weather some people are excited its going to cool off some, its not going to be as warm but still very comfortable. We will reach into the mid to upper 60s from the coast to the bay, inland areas 71 degrees, a lot of sunshine. That continues into sunday. Its going to be a windy weekend and keep that in mind if you are going to the beach, too, you will need to hold on to your hat. Yes, bring the sunscreen. We talked about this, the giants fanfest happening at at t park tomorrow and its going to be a busy one, our temperatures in the upper 50s and just like it always is in at t park, you want to make sure that you are bundled up because it will feel cooler once the winds start to gust. If you are going down to the at t pebble beach proam it is going to be beautiful with highs in the low 70s today, but low 60s tomorrow. You will notice that dip in those temperatures, but still all clear even through sunday with highs up to 65 degrees. For the warmer weather you can go down to paso robles that will be in the low 80s today, 77 degrees tomorrow and sunday at 75. We will stay on top of this breaking news story as new information comes into us throughout the morning. Its 6 46. Right now the Government Shutdown while you were asleep and moments ago reopened. Scott mcgrew joins us now. A lot of confusion in washington this morning. There really was. I was on the phone to people in their cars back east, some had been told to stay home, others told to come into their government jobs. It was a confusing morning but it all got settled and hour ago around 9 00 a. M. Washington time when the president announced he had signed a bill reopening the government. The bill he signed was approved last night past midnight. The two houses there both alike in dignity passed legislation to keep the government running. Now, how did they do it . By promising a lot to everybody, not a wall, not daca, but hundreds of billions in spending including money for our friends and neighbors in napa to help them recover from that terrible fire. We are seeing a curious change in american politics with republicans as big spenders, offering money towards projects they like and projects democrats like to get those democratic votes. Remember, the gop just cut taxes and added to spending and that leads to massive new debt and deficits. To be fair, 67 republicans in the house did vote no this morning. But its an overall change in attitude. Let me take you back to the 2012 National Convention where they set up a massive debt clock right there in the stadium showing what they were calling the obama debt, 8 trillion, that is a blast from the past, the debt is almost twice that now. President trump says the reason the debt and the deficit are increasing is because there arent enough republicans. In a tweet a short time ago he said without more republicans in congress we were forced to increase spending on things we did not like or want in order to finally after many years of depletion take care of our military. Sadly we needed some dem votes for passage. Must elect more republicans in 2018. Now, looking ahead will Republican Leadership keep its promise, Start Talking about daca, and what is the few fewer for chief of staff jon kelley . The New York Times is reported President Trump has been on the phone with this guy Reince Priebus his previous chief of staff, the guy he fired, to talk to him about whether he should fire his current chief of staff, jon kelley. We examine the president s tweets and executive orders and speeches every day right here on today in the bay. Im scottmcgrew on twitter. Take a look at this, new this morning a Northern California man he is showing off his collection of more than a dozen olympic torches. Nelson howard lives in sacramento and he owns 16 of the 19 torches from the modern era summer games and really every torch from the winter games of the millennium including pyeongchang. His favorite is from the 1984 los angeles games which was the first torch that he ever collected. He was in the National Guard at the time and his unit supported the Olympic Games that year in l. A. He also has the 2008 beijing torch which has been to mt. Everest and the 2000 sydney games torch which was lit under water and taken beneath the Great Barrier reef. But his rarest is from the 1964 tokyo games. Never ever see them come up for bid, very, very rarely and when they do theyre extremely expensive. Well, he says he eventually would be willing to give the torch collection to the Sacramento Kings basketball owner as long as the torches are put on display for everyone to enjoy. Pretty cool, huh .
