But investigative reporter, Jaxon Van Derbeken has found the eastern span may not last nearly as long as its supposed to. Reporter corrosion has long beleaguered the new bay bridge, leaving broken bowls, pitted cables and lingering questions about its longterm survivability. Now, yet another corrosion peril is apparently at work on this span. Thats according to a new report that find key wells on the giant steel pilings holding up its iconic tower are under assault. Corroding in some places 50 faster than caltrans had estimated. Just why is still a mystery. But at the current rate, the steel piles that hold up the tower could corrode away too soon to hold up the bridge for 150 years, as designed. In fact, its life span could be cut by 50 years. Its enough that if you had projected that out 150 years, you would not have what we assumed. Reporter thats brian maroney, caltrans chief engineer on the project. He says engineers allowed for the nearly fourinchthick steel piles to get three quarters of an inch of rust over the years. But, he says, a recent underwater survey of the barnicleencrusted steel piles suggest something besides rust is eating away at the bridges foundation. They also have questions about, are there very small microorganisms that are feeding on iron. And thats kind of a new thing in the bridge world. Were not used to that. Reporter the process is called microbiologically influenced corrosion. It turns out, the bay floor is rich with the tiny creatures that cause it. According to the assessment report, we obtained under the public records act. The microbes leave pits that experts liken to holes, left by worms and termites in wood. And for now, caltrans is focusing on finding out if microbes are to blame. And whether other bay bridges could be at risk. Its really something new. And when there is something new to us, you know, we want to make sure we get on top of that as fast as we can. Reporter while maroney stresses the problem is not critical at the moment, the longterm risk cannot be ignored. Its important to, you know, not drop the ball here. As years go on, we have to make sure we get out and inspect it. Reporter the corrosion experts caltrans Commission Want the foundation checked again in three to five years. But not everyone agrees. Lisa fulton is a berkeleybased metallurgical engineer who has studied micro logical corrosion. Is this scary . Absolutely scary, yes. Reporter fulton says there is no easy way to stop colonies of microbes once they strike. And when they do, the damage can be far more predictable than rust. Youve got Steel Structures everywhere. Everywhere. So this this is alarming, because its not a typical mode of corrosion in these types of structures. Reporter the first thing to do, she says, is cut out sections of the pitted metal to confirm what is going on. Every weld can have can be undergoing the same accelerated corrosion. So the extent of the problem is not known. And its got to be one has to get to the bottom of it. Reporter Jaxon Van Derbeken, nbc bay area news. We have much more ahead on today in the bay. Wasnt in the states up until the early 2000s, and the strain thats going around now just came over in 2015. Theres no Natural Immunity in the dog population. Thats why theyre so susceptible to getting sick. And how is it spread . Its spread through the air. Its mostly if a dog is coughing or barking or and it can often be spread through just like with humans, through clothing, hands and stuff. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. It seems like it would be really hard to stop. How are you preventing it from spreading in your shelter . Well, we have pretty vigorous cleaning protocols anyway, but weve just really tightened them up. Were not doing as many dogtodog interactions and we wait until theyre fully vaccinated before we let them be social again. And its really nice that you include those vaccinations. I read that you, for example, with blackey, you vaccinated him. But theres two vaccinations for the flu. So if someone adopts a dog thats only had the one vaccination, youll give this incredibly reduced fee of just 20 for the second vaccination. Other places are charging 100. Right. So another good reason to adopt from pets in need. If you would like to find out more about pets in need, about blackey, about the offers you guys give, head to their website, pets in need. Org.
