A little register of fog in the north bay and thats been basically the case for the last dumb of weeks. The bay bridge toll plaza we do have the backup forming for cash lanes. We will see how things shake out over the next ten minutes as all cash lanes should open. Breaking now, another crime spree involving young people overnight in the bay areas largest city. Its another snapshot of a larger problem plaguing san jose over the past month. Kris sanchez is live nearest ridge mall with a look at the new video coming in. I know youve been covering some of the previous crime stories involving youth as well. Reporter right. The scene is clear here now because the four juveniles who were arrested here, their parents picked them up. They didnt go to juvenile hall, thats not how it works. Lets show you the video of where the scene was active this morning. This is where police tell us that those four minors were in the stolen pickup truck, it looks like an suv because it has a camper shell. They hit the curb, blew out a tire and officers then took them into custody. They were waiting for their parents to show up. The teens will be cited and released. There has been a rash of crimes committed by minors and the San Jose Police chief concedes that part of the problem is that juveniles face limited consequences for crimes like these. Just last night in a story you only saw on nbc bay area, we were on scene in san joses evergreen neighborhood where sters busted a group of suspected car thieves, some of whom were too young to drive. Officers went door to door with long rifles and k9s, the four suspects were taken into custody, they were all between 16 and 14. We had a rash a few summers ago, i was out here two summers ago, and we took care of it and when a crew gets arrested the next one moves in. Reporter now, evergreen has seen a dramatic increase in burglaries recently, but as you can see from this crime reports map it is not the only neighborhood. The icons on your screen represent violent crimes, property crime and auto thefts reported in san jose to San Jose Police in just the last three days. Im going to link you to that map on my Facebook Page because you can search by zip code, you can search by street name, you can see whats happening where you live. Today in the bays Edward Lawrence joins us live in washington, hes monitoring all the overnight developments for us. Edward, the president calling this fake news. Reporter yeah, hes using that familiar term, laura, that he has used over and over and over again, calling this a fake New York Times story. Now, its interesting that Robert Mueller, the special counsel, would have known actually that President Trump wanted to fire him through conversations that his investigators had with the white House Counsel. President trump ordered Robert Mueller fired last june when he learned the russia investigation widened to obstruction of justice. But later packed off when his white House Counsel threatened to resign rather than carry out the order. The president responding to a report by the New York Times, later confirmed by nbc news. Mr. President , did you seek to fire Robert Mueller . Fake news, folks. Fake news. Typical New York Times fake stories. Reporter the president s lawyer responded, stating, we decline to comment out of respect for the office of the special counsel and its process. I would do it under oath. Reporter this comes on the heels of the president saying publicly he would go under oath and answer the special counsels questions. The white house also lays out the most detailed plan to give 1. 8 million undocumented immigrants who came to this country as children citizenship over 10 to 12 years. In a cnbc interview this morning President Trump appeared confident that his new immigration plan will work. Look, were going to try to make a deal on daca. We have a good chance of making t what we need is we need the wall, with he need security. It was certainly helpful that he said that he thought there should be a path for d. R. E. A. M. Ers. Reporter in exchange for the concession to democrats the president said he would get 25 billion for a border wall and allow only spouses and children in through chain migration as well as end the visa lottery program. Researchers, professor kimberly elzak says there are right ways to cry at work. Telling people that youre trying to stop crying and youre not doing it on purpose, so im really sorry, this is very stressful time for me or this is a stressful project and if you just if we can just take a little break i should be able to continue in a minute. Those kinds of things really help a lot. The professor says men are raised not to cry while growing up while women are, but she says men take out their frustrations with anger and that can oftentimes be seen as strength and in some occasions rewarded. Scott mcgrew joins us now, he sat down with one of our colleagues. Cnbc ran that interview a short time ago. It was a discussion mostly about the economy and joe concern nan of cnbc gave what i have to say was a pretty friendly interview in which the president praised lawmakers for passing tax reform, pointing out no one expected so Many Companies to use tax savings to give employees bonuses. At t started, but they immediately followed, hundreds of companies are giving thousands and thousands of dollars to their workers and now you have almost 3 million workers that are receiving thousands of dollars, nobody ever thought that was not like in the plan. Even starbucks. Starbucks. Yesterday disney and others. Even starbucks. Now, two things to know, that interview took place before the blockbuster New York Times article that said trump tried to fire the special counsel and you know were going to talk more about that later. We should mention President Trump is speaking right now in davos to the public. We will bring you excerpts from that as well. Thats, again, coming up in a bit. During the nfl skills challenge in orlando, florida, players squared off yesterday in dodgeball. It was a classic. It all came down to Jarvis Landry you can see in red against kicker graham gano in blue. Catch by landry, gave him the win. They were excited. He is a wide receiver, so, you know, he probably should have gotten it. We should have some dodgeball games here. Oh, my goodness. I remember those games on the playground. Stopped being a kids game once that one kid was able to throw really hard at your face. No face. No face. Take the offense to the defense. Good day to be outside if you want to play dodgeball, soccer, football, any type of sports. The weather will be fantastic. Not too hot, not too cold. The peninsula, look at some of that fog, 44 degrees. Its getting a little foggy out there so slow down as usual. Trivalley 39 degrees. Its old in the north bay at 39 degrees right now. Look at San Francisco, we are seeing some low lying clouds out there with a nice little comparison of the skyline, 45 degrees. 41 in the east bay right now. So whats going on with that storm . We saw that storm system move in and thats what brought some torrential rain, hail, and, yes, scattered showers into the overnight hours and into the Early Morning hours which is why some of those roads are still pretty wet out there. Now we have that system trekking out to the east and then just behind this weve got this system of High Pressure thats going to dry us out and warm us up into the weekend. First we have to deal with older temperatures and cooler afternoon highs in the 50s. San francisco a high of 51 degrees, palo alto 55, san jose 58, oakland 53. If you are heading out to any of the hiking trails once you get over the cold morning keep on bundling up because by 10 00 a. M. We will still be at 48 degrees, by 1 00 we will see more sunshine coming in and we will top out into the upper 50s at about 60 degrees for san jose. Over the next seven days we do start a bit of a drying trend in the forecast. If you check out sunday, thats when we start to see a warm up in there, 59 degrees in San Francisco and some 60s in inland areas. Lets check in with mike, a closure. You can access the southbound side of the freeway through the area, but northbound right now limit limited. You might want to head over toward industrial. Westbound highway 4 the earlier traffic break i told you about, they are laying flares out now. Fog drifted through the area, its tough to see if you are traveling over towards cummings sky way off of 6el e680 you wile that flare pattern. More fog in the north bay. Hopefully that will help in the morning commute a little bit, but it is a cold start so bundle up before you head out the door. 5 30. Good morning. Thanks for joining us, im will go. And im marcus washington. Right now we want to head over to vianey arana looking at the forecast today. You say were going to dry out. Yeah, were going to dry out and the roads are drying out as well but now commuters will have to deal with a little fog especially in the north bay. In terms of the visibility santa rosa down to half a mile, napa down to one mile and novato really limited visibility out there, so please be careful, slow it down, both hands on the wheel, turn on the fog lights if you do, if not low beams it is. Oakland pretty good, San Francisco also looking pretty good. As far as your temperature trend we still have a couple low clouds in the forecast and we are still in the 30s and 40s, but over the next couple of hours San Francisco climbing out of those 40s, but its going to take a while, slow to warm today. So by about 10 00 a. M. 49 degrees and then San Francisco will be topping out into those 50s. Not really expecting those warm temperatures. Definitely very winterlike around here thanks to that cold front that swept in bringing tons of rain in the paris. I will talk about the snow totals in just a bit. We have this crash weve been tracking in hayward, thats one of the only incidents. That was the closure for a street. As we look at the Speed Sensors everything looks great now. The latest update is that they did reopen a street. Getting more detail into the newsroom. They will have that just after my report. A street has reopened. Getting over toward the bay bridge it is a nice easy drive down the east shore freeway or coming up from that hayward area. The bay bridge toll plaza does show, though, that they turned on the metering lights and they have the backup, but its a little bit lighter as is traditional on a friday. Back to you, laura. Thank you very much. Just like mike mentioned, with err following that breaking news in the east bay this morning where a chp cruiser crashed into another vehicle during a chase. This is a video just into our newsroom. Happened an hour ago at a street near interstate 880. We learned five minutes ago that the street has now reopened. A street has. As you can see from this video that crash was head on with impacts relative relatively low chp are saying, the injured suffered both by the driver and chp officer considered minor. Chp also saying the car officers were chasing exited from 880 and the driver got away. Now to a development of another crash involving a chp officer in hayward. It says despite there being more than 81,000 online reports of car breakins in San Francisco there have only been 13 arrests in the past seven years. Today in the bays pete suratos is live in San Francisco with a closer look at this report. Good morning, pete. Reporter good morning to you, marcus and laura. Yeah, we took a look at that report this morning, a very small percentage to say the least. I want to point out these are based off of online claims over a sevenyear period, but those online claims make up a good majority of the claims when it comes to those car breakins, roughly about 60 . I was going to talk about those numbers, you mentioned one of them, 13 arrests out of the more than 81,000 online claims regarding car breakins over a sevenyear period. Thats according to data from the das office that was presented in the paper, San Francisco chronicle, this morning. Now, in 2017 there were more than 30,000 reported car breakins, to car that to the number in 2011, there were fewer than 11,000 car breakins that year. As of right now San Francisco is seeing an average of 85 car breakins per day. I will show you guys a heat map showing you some of the areas where we see a majority of those breakins. You see them mostly in the downtown San Francisco area near city hall, as well as through the mission district. Now, some have pointed to the issue of prop 47 which raised the threshold for felony theft up to 950 but a recent study by the californians for safety and justice claim there has been little change in crime since that prop passed a few years ago. A bill is being considered by the state senate to close a loophole that would allow prosecutors prove the defendant committed the break in by showing they broke a car window to get into the car. That state senate bill has the endorsement of the San FranciscoDistrict Attorney who spoke about it early this week. Tod to believe that i believe that this legislation would be a Silver Bullet that somehow is going to end car burglaries in the city, but its simply a tool that will give us the ability to do work this cases that we havent been able to. Reporter San Francisco pd told the paper that nearly 500 auto burglary arrests were made last year in San Francisco in 2017 but the paper says only one of those arrests were linked to the online claims. As we reported in the past San Francisco police has tried to address this issue, increasing foot patrols in some of those problem areas, but it clearly continues to be a problem for the city. Live in San Francisco, pete suratos for today in the bay. Interesting report. Thank you, pete. Tomorrow a couple of fundraisers being held for the family of two young antioch sisters who were killed after a suspect crashed a stolen truck into their familys car. One city is making an effort to help teachers find affordable places to live. The Santa Clara County supervisor wants to develop a plot of land to build homes specifically for teachers in palo alto. Now, the idea is to make it affordable for people to live in the city where they teach. If we want to attract and retain top flight talent then we have to find a way to give them a place to live. I would love to live where i teach and be able to stay longer, to be able to offer my kids more support or be around a little bit more and right now thats just not feasible. That was a palo alto middle schoolteacher. The property in question is a block and a half from the california avenue cal trains station, thats near local shops and supermarkets. The supervisor says it could hold 60 to 100 homes for teachers. More details now, lets give you some perspective on just how expensive it is to live in palo alto. We researched housing and apartment prices overnight. Zillow puts the average cost of a home at more than 3 million. The average price to rent a home is nearly 5500 a month. Rent cafe puts the average rent for an apartment at 3,000 a month. If you have any money left over maybe you can head to the sierra this weekend. Be prepared, however, for snow and ice on the roads. This is a live look from interstate 80 right at king vale. Right now there are chain controls as expected on 80. Caltrans telling everyone to take your time on the slippery roads. Crews are expected to work 12hour shifts and stay until all the highways are clear and safe for drivers. Got to get used to it. Hopefully, right, mike . Hopefully you are used to it, if not or even if you are youre prepared as well. Again, chain control for highway 50 and i80 heading through the sierra. Over here much calmer, much easier conditions south bay all the way up the peninsula and throughout the east bay. Maybe some damp roadways until that sun comes out, maybe some fog and mist but this will complicate things for highway 4 we are hearing about the third round of traffic breaks west on highway 4 towards cummings sky way. An earlier disabled vehicle in the center divide. They want to make sure traffic slows through the area because its foggy there, as well as where you see the orange up in the north bay. Seen nay was talking about that. Its impeding the view for some drivers but not our view of san rafael from our camera. It certainly wont stop us from seeing the weekend. Or celebrating it. Officially friday. Talking about it all week. Finally, right . We are expecting much better conditions, guys, so no fear in terms of the rain, not really a big threat this weekend because that system finally made its exit off to the east. Were really tracking cooler temperatures today, but eventually we will actually start to warm up as we head in especially towards sunday and inland areas will start to see finally some 60s out there. Coast 56 degrees expected for saturday, bay 59. Check out inland, 61 degrees. If you notice in the icons, well, partly clear skies, but, yes, we will have another cold start tomorrow morning. Just keep that in mind if you have plans to be out bright and early. We are expecting similar conditions on sunday. The reason for that is because that High Pressure is going to start us off on a bit of drying trend. This will be the weekend that will kick start dry conditions for the bay area. Looks like we will finish off january with a dry workweek ahead. Inland 53 degrees, look at all that sunshine, 62 for the bay, coast 58 degrees. Lake tahoe we are still tracking more snowshowers as we head into tomorrow, so you may want to check the Road Conditions as always before you head up anywhere near the mountains. Now, understand, this news is brandnew, New York Times just reporting it, but the attempt to fire Robert Mueller actually came last summer. Now, that doesnt change the gravity of the situation, but its important to understand the timeline. You do have to ask yourself why is this news coming out now . They hid it for months.
