When we think of a tsunami, we know it ends up with a big destructive wave but how does everything unfold when there is a tsunami. Of course we get an earthquake occurring. Usually it is of major magnitude like early this morning. It is happening on the sea floor. It sends up a column of water creating wave action that can sometimes travel as fast as 400 miles per hour. All of that wave action can then spread out several hundred miles. Here eat thing, though, when it is far out to sea, it is very shallow but certainly very powerful because there is so much ocean water. It would be hard it pick up with the naked eye. Then as wave action is close to the floor, there are two things that happen. We see water receding from the immediate coastline. That water feeds into the wave action and a sea pool here that causes all of the water to begin to get larger. That wave can possibly grow as high as 100 feet in some cases. Then a powerful wave crashing down producing the flooding where wave action can last for several hours after the initial tsunami arrives. So it is certainly a very complex thing that occurred under the ocean floor. The best thing to remember is if we have a tsunami watch here in the bay area, we could see conditions change near the coastline if we ever get a tsunami warning for the california coast that means dangerous conditions are on the way.
