The high temperatures reaching the upper 60s. 68 in concord and san jose. 67 in napa and 64 today in San Francisco. Well talk about the rain in the forecast. Its coming up in seven minutes. Mike gets you out there on the roads. Thats right. For the most part, we are easing back to the workweek as far as the work commute goes. We have slowing south 680. Theres a vehicle that may be blocking part of the slow lane. Thats the issue coming toward sunol. Thats a minor delay. Folks in the trivalley are expecting it. We had more traffic than the last week. Theres slowing here as you come off the berkeley curve. Let me show it to you. The metering lights are on. The fast track lanes are misnamed. Theres a slow track lane. They show the biggest back up. We want to get to the breaking news. The massive fire in santa clara. At one point, flames could be seen from miles away, even as far as highway 87. Today in the bays, pete suratos is there. Have you been able to find out any new information . Reporter good morning to you, marcus and kris. At this point, we dont know exactly what caused the fire in santa clara. We know it was a card board manufacturing planl manufacturing plant. When crews showed up, they said it was on fire. We have another camera set up where you can see the smoke coming out of that plant, that building right now. They were able to knock down the fire for the most part, roughly, not long ago, in the past hour. At this time, no word on the car. We know, according to santa clara fire, all employees were evacuated safely. Well show the video of the flames. Theres the orange glow. A lot of people saw them from highway 17. The flames coming from the manufacturing plant. Theres no threat of the fire spreading. Its contained in this area. They are looking for hot spots tharks is a big concern for them going through all that debris. I spoke to santa claire are fire. Here they are explaining that in more detail. Our concerns are basically getting to the seed of the fire. The storage, which basically they stack them four high and four feet each in equal amounts up to 15 feet. As they burn and fall down, its dense material so its hard for us to penetrate into the seed of the fire. Santa clara fire says power poles caught on fire as a result of the fire. They were able to put it out. Right now, they are focused on stabilizing it. As a result, power has been shut off in this area, mainly an area with industrial businesses. Crews are going to be here for several hours working to put out those hot spots and all that debris left behind from the card board. Pete suratos for today in the bay. Thank you so much. The police have said it was an apparent drunkdriving crash. The 22yearold man whose name has not been released is hospitalized with serious injuries. The suspect was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Today, the Alameda County will announce the charges filed against the driver. Two elderly men remain in Critical Condition after they were struck bay delivery truck yesterday in San Francisco. Police say the truck driver made an illegal uturn and struck the men. A car was also hit in the richmond district. A family of five was in that car. None of the family members were seriously hurt. The mom in that car says everybody was very shaken up. Right where the truck hit was where my 10yearold was sitting, so, luckily, yeah, it missed. Police say one of the elderly men suffered a punctured lung and the other internal bleeding. The delivery truck driver tried to change direction as he turned and overcorrected and thats when he hit those men on the sidewalk. 6 06. The undocumented immigrant acquitted for killing kate steinle is set to be released this week. He was a felon in possession of a firearm. The jury found him not guilty on other charges in november, including first degree murder. For the felony, he could be sentenced to six months, 12 months or 3 years behind bars. His defense Attorney Says hes already served in county jail. An interesting announcement overnight concerning the olympics. South korea says it is Offering High level talks with rival north korea ahead of the game. They are saying to meet at the border about how to improve overall sides. The games start next month. It is can have 15. New this morning, massive flames erupted inside an apartment complex. The fire left 16 people with minor injuries. Eight people had to be rescued from that burning building. Now the investigation into what caused it is under way. Continuing coverage on a tragic story out of colorado. A Community Came together last night to mourn the loss of Douglas County sheriffs deputy zach parish. The husband and father of two was killed in an apparent ambush. The candle light vigil was held in littleton for friends and family. They paid their respects with glowing memories, words and support. Everything in my power to honor you. He made me a better person, a better cop. He put ten hours into a tenhour shift, no matter what. The gunman fired more than 100 rounds. Four other policemen were killed. Parrish is expected to be laid to rest on friday. All airports are getting back on track this morning after temporary computer outages for the u. S. Customs and border protections caused this chaos at international airport. The outage caused several hours of long lines at the check points after the new years holiday. This particular video is from Miami International airport. It happened at other places, too. It affected several airports throughout the country. It might make your heart stop for a second. A Texas Police Officer narrowly avoids being hit by a car after sliding on the ice on the freeway. Just in the nick of time as that car slides. Well, as we are going to finally be talking about winterlike rain, we are heading into our wettest month of the year. The month of january, this blue bar here shows how much rain we should get and we are also going to be measuring rain above what we have had the past couple months. December was so dry, we only had 0 to 3 of normal. Hopefully, we can make up for that. We are watching our first storm system starting to spin around the pacific. That will be approaching as we head into the day tomorrow. Increased rain chances as we go into tomorrow afternoon and the evening hours. Also, a couple rounds of heavy rain possible for friday as well as sunday. With this first roupd of rain, we will have a possibility of getting an inch of rain in santa rosa. For spots like concord, over a half inch of rain and san jose, a little over a tenth inch of rain. Ill be tracking that as we head over to mike. We are easing back into the commute. The Record Number of sting ray attacks and how to prevent it from happening to you. You have heard of talking frigid temperatures across the country when kids are in new york enjoying their cousins. An unusual record is reported in southern california. Life guards recorded an alltime one day high for sting ray injuries. They say 73 people were stung on the day. So many swimmers reported being stung that life guards set up a sting ray area for polar bear plunge. One resident was among the victims. It doesnt feel good. It stings. I cant believe it. I have been surfing around her for 35 years, never been stung. Doesnt feel good. I imagine. There were several reasons for the spike in stings. Experts blame the low tides, small surf and warmer than normal ocean water and a lot of people. Who knew, right . New this morning, some of hollywoods leading ladies are among those launching a new initiative meant to confront sexual harassment. Continuing coverage on breaking news in the south bay. Nbc sky ranger now overhead as the massive flames were erupting overnight. Sky ranger still over the scene. You can see those glowing embers in the distance. That is why firefighters remain on scene. The investigation is just beginning into what happened. Today in the bays, pete suratos has been on the story since it broke at 4 30. There was concern at some point that it could affect power lines. Do you have updates . Reporter yeah, good morning to you, kris. That was one of the concerns that the power lines catching on fire. They have since been put out. Crews here, santa clara fire are working on stabilizing the power poles. For the most part, the fire has been knocked out. A majority of the fire has been put out a couple hours ago. Santa clara Paper Board Company here in santa clara. We want to show you a viewpoint from the cameras. You can see the smoke coming from the card board manufacturing plant. The card board bails catching on fire. All the employees were evacuated safely. No word on exactly what caused this fire. The Biggest Issue is going through those hot spots, so much of the card board caught on fire. You are looking at some of that video of the orange glow that people were able to see if they were in this area. I did get a chance to speak to santa clara fire about the difficulties they may face putting out those hot spots. Our big concerns are basically getting to the seed of the fire. They stack them four high and are four feet tall each. Equals amounts up to 15 feet. As they burn and fall down on each other,itis dense material. Its hard to ten trait to the seed of the fire. They are focused on stabilizing it. As a result of the fires, the power has been shut off on this. Crews are expected to be on scene for several hours working on those hot spots. Neighbors in one south bay neighborhood say two serial thieves are at work breaking into cars. This is the neighborhood surveillance video. Victims say it shows the thieves in action. This is on mcvoy street near the shark tank. Two men are riding up to parked cars on their bikes, smashing the windows and going through the cars. We spoke with a neighbor who said there were three victims on new years eve, alone. Riding their bikes. They have a very, you know, very thought out routine. They get in and get out quickly. The neighbors say the car break ins go back to at least november. They plan to give that video to police later today. Happening today, formal arraignment is scheduled for two men charged in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. 36 people died in that fire which started at a party in oakland. Last month, a judge determined there is enough evidence for them to stand trial. A scare for an east bay woman on new years eve. She says she was hit by celebrating gunfire. It happened around midnight near san leandro, near thrasher park. She was in the garden area when she was hit in the lower part of her body. She was not seriously hurt. Whether its through lighting off illegal fireworks, firing guns or kids that bang pots and pans together. Its a fun time for people to celebrate. We ring in the new year together with family and friends. The unfortunate part is some of those things can end tragically. Police received other calls of gunfire. Shooting a gun into the air is illegal in california. Happening today, the 49ers gm and head coach are set to talk about a season that ended better than it started. Ill give you a cheat for the bay bridge, coming up. 6 44. Video of rescue crews picking up hikers who got lost on new years day. One of the hikers apparently suffered a medical emergency. Crews picked up the hiker a little before 6 00 last night. As you can see, it was already dark. There were in two separate locations. They waved lights on their cell phone to help rescuers. Police are looking for two men involved in a new years day armed robbery. Investigators released two surveillance images showing those men. You can see one of them. It shows a masked man as they walk into the Convenience Store on oak park bailiff. This is a little before 7 00. They flashed handguns and stole cash and other items. Police in the north bay are searching for someone after a road rage shooting. This happened in santa rosa around 8 45. The victim was driving on calistoga road when the suspect pulled up behind him. He noticed the driver was holding a handgun. The victim tried to flee, leading a chase through several side streets. The victims tell police, thats when a suspect fired at least one shot, hitting the vehicle though, fortunately, not the victim. The person then drove away. Police say that person may be driving a silver mercedes suv. New this morning, scary moments in San Francisco as a muni streetcar collided with a truck in the mission bay neighborhood. This happened before 9 00 p. M. At mission bay bailiff north of 3rd street. The San Francisco examiner reports the driver of the bus turned in front of the streetcar causing the collision. The crash is now under investigation. New this morning, in 2017, apparently, the safest year, ever, for commercial air travel. Thats according to a consulting companys Civil Aviation review. They track larger aircraft and look at the thefts compared to the accidents. There were 111 accidents and 13 deaths worldwide. The firm says that means only one fatal accident for every 16 million. Country music star, Carrie Underwood is talking about the injuries reported when she fell a month ago and why she hasnt been seen in the public. She broke her wrist when she fell outside her home in november. She always suffered injuries to her face and had to have dozens of stitches. She is still healing, but her face does not quite look the same. Underwood adds, she is grateful because her injuries could have been far worse. 6 47. The parents, these folks, say they were racing against time to get to the hospital to welcome their bundle of joy that was arriving faster than they thought. It turned into police case, turned crime scene, turned makeshift delivery room. The babe had her own game plan. Made a grand entrance into the middle of the chaos and the middle of a South Carolina interstate on new years day. Seeing her born on the hood of the car. Fireworks going off in the background because its 1 00 in the morning on new years and they let me out of handcuffs. The cops starting clapping and congratulating us. They had enough excitement in 2018 to last the rest of the year. I will admit, heading to the hospital for my second baby, i said she better not be born in the car. Step on it. We start this morning at 44 degrees in livermore. 49 in san jose. A milder start, thanks to the incoming storm system that will bring us a very mild day before that rain arrives. Well be at 68 for a high in san jose. 62 in oakland and 64 in the peninsula. As you are starting out this morning, getting dressed, you need a coat. We are mostly in the 40s. As the day goes along, you are comfortable with light, long sleeves or a tshirt with jeans. The temperatures reaching the upper 60s. Here is a look at our storm system. We can see this swirl, the center of the low pressure well to the west of us. As that moves closer, we see more clouds moving in. Also a chance of thunderstorms by tomorrow. We are already starting to see a little of that light rain offshore. That will be working its way into the bay area tomorrow, especially for the afternoon. Then on thursday, well still have scattered showers and another round of some rain on friday. We have decent rainfall totals as well, then another round of rain late sunday into monday. With this first round of rain, we are looking at the potential of getting an inch of rain in santa rosa. San jose, a tenth inch. Ill be tracking more on this. This is what happened not far from san jose where fire crews are still at the scene of a paper mill fire that started early this morning. That fire is actually burning in a yard next to a mill. In is an matthew street. Workers were on the street at the time of the fire. Everyone made it out safely. So far, no word on a cause. Happening today, we expect to learn details of a man hitting and kills a chp officer. That crash happened on christmas eve. Police said it was an apparent drunkdriving crash. The 22yearolds man whose name has not been released was hospitalized with serious injuries. The suspect was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Today, the Alameda County distri District Attorney will announce the charges filed against that driver. We will have more on the newscast at 11 00 this morning. Two elderly men remain in Critical Condition after they were hit by a delivery truck driver yesterday in San Francisco. Police say the truck driver was making an illegal turn when he saw the men. A family of five was in the car. One of the elderly men suffered a punctured lung and the other internal bleeding. The driver tried to change direction making the illegal turn, overcorrected and hit those men on the sidewalk. All airports are getting back on track this morning after a temporary computer outage for u. S. Customs and border protection. The outage created several hours of long lines at immigration check points after the new years holiday. This is video from Miami International airport. The outage affected various counties.
