Such a time to remember a heroic man. Reporter thats right. Good morning to you, marcus and vicky. A very emotional time as you can imagine for the chp officers as they were en route to sacramento. We showed you the live pictures where the bellringing ceremony is taking place in honor of officer camilleri. I want to show you guys new video, this took place roughly at about 8 30 a. M. Several chp officers leaving the hayward headquarters this morning. I counted about eight of them riding on motorcycles, about a dozen or so following them in cruisers. Union city police did come out this morning to help them out. They blocked off the road as the officers made their way to the freeway to 808 right here off of whipple road. We got a chance to speak with the lieutenant with the Union City Police department about the untimely death of officer Andrew Camilleri. Any human being can relate to a tragedy like this, whether youre in the Law Enforcement community or not. Its a terrible incident that occurred. Its only made worse by the timing of it. Reporter camilleri was killed on Christmas Eve. He and his partner were on the side of 880 in hayward when a 22yearold suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana slam flood the back of their suv. Want to point out, the partner did survive the crash. Now, camilleri is survived by his wife and three young children. All of them very young, guys. Were talking about the older daughter only 12, the youngest, a 2yearold son. A Memorial Fund has been set up by the chp. Its on their facebook page, the chp golden gate division. Nbc bay areas anser hassan is live at dry creek park. Anser, there is a park usually packed with families. The playground behind you, this shooting happened in broad daylight . Reporter yeah, thats right. I just spoke with police a short while ago, they say this shooting has them on alert. Heres why. It happened here at dry creek park. Its a kids park, surrounded by homes on three sides and the b. A. R. T. Train line on the other. Seen families out here, people out for walks. The shooting happened yesterday around 3 00 p. M. Police tell me the victim involved was in some type of fight with the suspects before he was shot in the leg. They dont know what the fight was about or even if they knew each other. The police described this as a safe neighborhood. No reports of shootings in the past. Just minor reports of theft. But witnesses say they saw three to four men take off after the shots were fired. Police say there are no indication that it was gangrelated but theyre not ruling anything out, especially given the location. Were a pretty Safe Community so this struck us as kind of rare, especially in a park where there are children who go out and hang out and stuff, but, you know, our investigations, our detectives are doing the best they can. They are following up on witness information and hopefully we will be able to come to a close with this. Reporter now, police tell me that this is the fourth shooting in union city this year. One did result in a fatality. As for the victim, police are not releasing any details at this time, except that his injuries are nonlifethreatening. Weve had the fog roll in this morning and its covering much of the San Francisco area and also it was really deep, some of that fog rolling into parts of the north bay valleys. Well, as we take a live look gentlewoman side from San Bruno Mountain above the clouds, we are seeing it settling over the city. It will take a little while longer for it to clear while inland areas are seeing nothing but sunshine. As we go into the next couple of hours, that sun will start to warm things up and also help mix out some of that fog as well. Right now were at 54 degrees in san jose, 51 degrees in livermore and 5 in fairfield. Santa rosa started out this morning with the fog and freezing temperatures and struggling to warm up right now. Its still really cool out there. The visibility down still to about one mile. And San Francisco and clear visibility is about ten miles. So as we go through the day, the mostly sunny skies inland will make those temperatures into the low 60s. Upper 50s for San Francisco and half moon bay. Wow, this cash cam video was taken just after spacex launched a falcon 9 rocket from vendberg air force base. You can actually see the three cars get into the accident. Apparently because those drivers were distracted by the launch. This happened on interstate 10 in riverside county. Look at the fog over San Francisco and just see the top of the transamerica pyramid. Beautiful scenery out there. Yesterday we had a little bit of fog over San Francisco. Right now weve really seen it return. Much deeper. And as we take a live look outside in san jose, its all clear here. And we will continue on with some sunshine throughout the rest of the day. So as we get out and about, we are looking at some of that fog rolling across twin peaks. Its starting to clear there and our temperatures are mostly in the upper 40s and lower 50s. Warming up the most now in san jose, where the temperature is at 54 degrees. As we look at our high temperatures today, some low 60s, up to 61 degrees in milpitas and light winds as we go throughout the rest of the day. Also a breezy wind kicking up from the north for the east bay, expect a high of 63 degrees in danville, oakland, 60 degrees. 60 degrees in redwood city. Cooler in San Francisco as well as some of the coastal areas where our highs will stay mostly in the 50s because of that fog. And in novato today, expect a high of 61 degrees. Lets talk about how much rain weve had throughout the month of december. And how that compares to normal. Now, if youve been watching, ive been keeping up with our rainfall deficit. The rainfall totals have not changed because we only had two days sop of rain and it really didnt bring us that much. Less than 0. 10 of an inch across most of the bay area. In santa rosa, were doing the worst because we normally get quite a bit of rain there. Lacking over 5 inches of rain now. In San Francisco, we need 3 1 2 inches of rain to catch up with our december normal. In oakland, we need almost 3 inches of rain. For livermore, 2 inches there, also about 2 inches in Mountain View and in san jose. So then we look at how much rain we are supposed to get. Several inches of rain. And this is usually one of the wettest times of the year. But january is normally our wettest month of the rainy season before we start to see those rainfall totals and what we normally get really start to dip as we go into spring. So looking at how much rain weve gotten, the bay area average, look at that, 03 of normal. We really do need some normal. We look at whats coming down the pike over the next few days. Absolutely nothing for us. Its still going to be really dry. Even though well start to see the return of that onshore flow and the clouds and fog that may be just enough to give us some mist and drizzle and add a little bit in some of those areas that have been really dry. As we go into next week, we take it through tuesday, january 2nd, into the start of the new year. We start to see the pattern opening up just a bit. So hopefully well get some rain in here. Were focussing on whats going to happen new years eve. There is the potential that we could have this fog rolling in in time for the fireworks. So thats something ill be keeping an eye on. AirField Supply Company near the san jose airport is one of the few that will be allowed to sell it. Were anticipating the first couple of weeks being pretty busy. Its all new. I think Everyone Wants to come and check it out. Reporter there are only 40 licensed Stores Across california so far, but the state will continue issuing licenses through the weekend. San jose and san diego have the most at seven apiece. I think that san jose did a really good job of setting up regulations. They had a pretty strict policy up front. It really made the state licensing problem thus far, put us in a good position. Reporter other cities have been slow to approve their own rules and permits. This is brandnew, and in more and more jurisdictions are coming online by the day, but its still going to be a process as we move forward. Not everyones going to necessarily be ready on january 1st. A San Francisco attorney has been arrested for possession of child pornography. Investigators say 66yearold michael conal is suspected of uploading and trading graphic child pornography through a chat messenger application. They raided his home near 23rd avenue and irving street last week. During that search, investigators say they conskate aid laptop that included child porn and disturbing images. This happened last night after two cars slammed into each other. One of those cars kept draving and crashed into the home. The intersection of los padres boulevard. Were told the family that lives in that house have two small children but luckily no one was in the home at the time of the crash. An investigation is underway after another fire along a south bay freeway last night. This one in san jose under the highway 87 overpass at curtner avenue. Firefighters say it started in a homeless encampment. A portion of curtner was closed while crews put out that fire. Just last week, Police Arrested a transient for starting about a dozen fires along 880. Recent small pfeifers appear to be intentionally set. People say it is an all too familiar story. The small fire next to the walking trail at this park in san jose was put out quickly by firefighters on monday. The neighbors tell us they have seen dozens of small fires in the past few months. They say the possibility of a serial arsonist is worrisome because theyve lived through it before. In 2014, the socalled south bay arsonist set fire to homes, a church and a warehouse in that same area. He was eventually caught and sentenced to prison. Neighbors say that story has stuck with them. We have obviously are oversensitive in our area because of the arsonist we had a couple of years back. That really does concern us. The Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association has been in contact with the Fire Department and investigators say they are aware of neighbors concerns. Well, she was fed up and said enough is enough. A San Francisco woman says that she was tired of people stealing packages off of her porch. Now shes thinking outside of the box and really playing a little trick on those thieves with the help of her cats. I kind of like it when people take matters into their own hands when it comes to Something Like this. Nbc bay areas jeanne elle shows the tools this woman is using to fight back. The cats steal the show inside camia woods house. Outside, themes are stealing packages. I run down stairs, there is nothing there and check my video and im like, really . Reporter woods says package thieves are trolling her neighborhood daily. Signs for delivery people, security cameras and Police Reports arent make a difference. Last woke after her sick cats medicine was stolen, woods decided it was time to make a stink. I was cleaning out my cat box and my cat was sick and i was like, this would be really nasty to put in a package and leave for people. Reporter she left two packages full of cat litter out on Christmas Eve and four on Christmas Day. They were all stolen. The first thing we want to do is push the button on it just to test the battery and the audible portion of the alarm. Not working. This detector does not work. So the one in your bedroom is not working. No. Whats that like to see . Its upsetting because thats the first place were going to hear it if its going to go off. But were not just finding problems, firefighters are fixing them. Installing brandnew alarms for free. Im glad we came. Im glad you guys came, too. Reporter next door, we meet peggy. Her detectors not working either. I dont do ladders anymore because im afraid of falling. So you cant check those detectors. Right. I always forget when someone else is here to get them to check it for me. Thats why were here for you today. Good. Reporter but then, an even bigger problem. Here we are in the kitchen which is the source of a lot of residential smoke detector. Within ten feet of your kitchen, youre supposed to have one. No smoke detectors. The Fire Department installing two new alarms for peggy. All right. It works. Reporter we check house after house. Finding problems in nearly all of them. There is no battery in here at all. No battery. I probably used it on something else. Reporter but the biggest tip of the day, on ive never heard before, inside this mans house, he thinks his detector works fine because when he tests it beeps. When that alarm sound it is tells me two things, that your battery is good and that the alarm works. But he says what it doesnt test is the sensor that actually detects smoke. Your detector was manufactured in 2002. Its about 15 years ago. Were going to have to change them out every ten years. Why . Dust starts blocking the sensor and it can no longer see smoke. You wouldnt know it. No problem, he says there is an easy way to test the sensor. T the candle test. Light a candle and blow it out, place your alarm over the smoke and it should go off. Its not going off. This blows your mind a little. It does. I just put a battery in it a couple of days ago and it started chirping. We helped. Reporter sounding the alarm so your family stays safe. Here is another tip, if youre worried about forgetting to change your battery, buy lithium batteries for around 5 to 10 and they work for ten years. Always remember the candle test.
