The train derailed as it was making the inaugural trip of a fast service between seattle and portland. 80 passengers and five crew members were on board. Reporter marcus and laura, that new information about the speed came from an overnight News Conference with ntsb officials here. Now, they are planning to spend today trying to figure out why. Is everybody okay . Im still figuring that out. We have cars everywhere. Down on to the highway. Reporter an amtrak train on the inaugural run of the Train Service to portland derailed and veered off an overpass 40 miles south of seattle. Several cars crashed into the busy interstate 5 freeway in the middle of rush hour and smashed a new semitruck and several other cars. Now, the investigation is focusing on the speed of the train and the condition of the track. Preliminary indications are that the train was traveling at 80 Miles Per Hour in a 30mileperhour track. Reporter it was supposed to be a day of celebration, more than 80 passengers and crew were on board for the first day of faster service, including alex, a reporter for nbcs affiliate, king 5, who got off before the disaster. Many going to work. They were heading to the office or heading home for the holidays. Everybody comes in and you are going thats not going to happen. Here we are. Thats exactly what happened. Reporter the 180 million project is in the target of critics, raising concerns about safety. That debate may now be reignited. The ntsb Investigation Continues today as they try to find the other black box and determine the condition of the track. Now to a live look at the scene. The guard has not been charged. A stunning twist to a story we covered yesterday when a driver shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in richmond. We have learned the driver was a 9year veteran of the San Francisco police department. A Richland Police officer made the stop yesterday afternoon near hill top mall. The officer was approaching the vehicle when the driver ended his life. Late last night, Police Confirmed it was an unidentified off duty San FranciscoPolice Officer who was stopped in connection with an ongoing investigation. Only on nbc bay area this morning, Recreational Marijuana will become legal across the state in two weeks. Thats raising concerns about people driving under the influence. The city of walnut creeks Planning Commission has given the Trinity Center permission to move in behind me. Its a vacant space at hollywood boulevard. There are a number of people who live in the apartments next door. They are not happy with the decision. They forced the city to reconsider, to consider their appeal. Someone posted these purple posters throughout the area. They are urging their neighbors to show up at tonights Council Meeting and fight back. Here is background. The Trinity Center is a nonprofit that provides services for people that are homeless, Senior Citizen or on the brink of ending up on the street. Trinity wants to move in for 18 months while the Current Location is torn down and replaced. Residents are worried homeless will loiter in the neighborhood and lead to an increase in trash and property crimes. We spoke to the director. They said they serve only 19 people, down from the 77 they used to serve a few years ago. She points out the lease with the strip mall requires that her organization abide by certain rules and regulations which would protect the neighborhood. Here is a woman who lives in the apartments next door. Its hard to afford living here. I talk to a lot of these people. They are people who cant make ends meet, you know . A lot of bad things happen in peoples lives and we have to help them. If you ignore it, they wont go away. Its not going to go away. Reporter we did speak with another woman off camera who lives in the apartments. She would prefer the Trinity Center not move into this location. A developing story we are following from the east bay, caught on camera. A dangerous side show over the weekend with a new twist. You can see the cars spinning out of control as hundreds of people watched. This time, the illegal spectacle had a laser show that blinded drivers and officers. California Highway Patrol is calling it a troubling trend with dangerous consequences. It can cause blindness. If you are caught flashing lasers into the sky, you could face felony charges. At the side show crackdown, police towed 11 cars and arrested five people. 6 34. Berkeley leaders will allow police to use pepper spray during violent protests. They approved it in a vote dating back two decades. Concerns have been raised about the health affects of pepper spray. Nonviolent offenders may soon be released from jail without having to pay bail. Santa clara county leaders, today, will introduce a no cost release program for low level defendants who cant afford bail costs. It is funded thanks to a grant from mcarthur foundation. They argue the plan is needed to cut population numbers in the county jail system. Four teenagers have been arrested for firing flairs into seven homes in san ramon over the weekend. The incidents were caught on tape by surveillance and police used that to track the suspects. Some of the people whose homes were targeted say this is a very serious situation. All four of the suspects were booked into juvenile hall. We are waiting to hear what charges they face. At 6 36, city workers are asking the council to extend a parking ban for rvs. Palo alto online reports a portion of week street was a popular parking spot. City workers say the people in the rvs are responsible for more than 6000 gallons of human waste that is dumped down the city storm drain. Ahead of winter rain, they are worried because the street already overflowed and prone to water ponding. We dont want that. Looking at the roadways, these are moving smoothly. They held a meeting and parents showed up in droves. They expect to close five schools because of lack of funding. The high cost of living in san jose makes lower attendance. A final decision is expected next month. A popular aquatic park remains closed after two swimmers were attacked by sea lions. The area is off limits until thursday. Some swimmers are not heeding that warning. Last week, two swimmers were bitten by sea lions. Over the weekend, park rangers spotted three young male sea lions. Conditions are improving to give the firefighters a boost in cutting down the fire raging in southern california. They reached a milestone in fighting the thomas wildfire. It is 50 containment. Full containment is two weeks away. Its burned over 2, 000 acres. Thats 2,000 acres less than the largest wildfire in california history. New this morning, the bay area nurse that helped fire victims is being honored. We profiled her last month, a santa rosa nurse whose postwent viral. Walmart is giving her 5,000 for her disease. Later on today, light long sleeves will keep you comfortable with the highs in the 50s and low 60s. We are tracking the next storm system moving in, producing a lot of rain for the pacific northwest. Taken away in critical condition. The person is receiving treatment. It is a major thoroughfare. Around 66, 67. Thats a critical spot for the morning commute as the commute builds through berkeley city streets. Calm. The closure for a few blocks south of ashby. Lets go to the map and get you located. There is ashby avenue, san pablo and to the south of the intersection is the closure so a couple blocks. This might affect transit line 72. Checking the crash scene. Westbound 80 does slow because of a slowdown and the volume on the east shore freeway. A lighter flow keeps things around 40 minutes. Toll plaza, where an earlier disabled vehicle not causing much more of an issue. We get through the maze, no Major Concerns aside from the crash with the injuries. Several cars landed on interstate 5 during yesterdays busy morning commute. We now know the train was going 80 Miles Per Hour in a 30mileperhour zone when it derailed. 15 miles over that speed limit. 100 people were injured. The train was making its inaugural trip for the fast service between the seattle and portland. Investigators say no one was driving on interstate 5 that was killed, but they havent specified who was killed on that train. A drugstore robbery suspect is in serious condition after an Armed Security guard shot him at a walgreens store in downtown san jose. Police say that suspect tried to rob the store around 8 00 p. M. The Security Guard opened fire. The guard is cooperating with investigators and has not been charged. We have learned more about the driver who shot and killed himself during a traffic stop in richmond. It was a nineyear veteran of the San Francisco police department. Richmond officer was walking up to the car when the driver killed himself. Late last night, Police Confirmed it was an off duty San FranciscoPolice Officer who had been stopped in connection with an ongoing investigation. His name has not been released.
