As travel nightmares go, it doesnt get worse than a power outage of the Busiest Airport. I cant stop looking at the video of people camped out for hours. How about the guy on the luggage cart . That would be us. I wish i i could say its over. The power is back but the troubles continue. Our top story, a travel nightmare for passengers. After the power outage that lasted nearly 11 hours. Before you say simple enough, just get your phone out and get an electronic boarding pass, the electronic boarding pass at delta is offline. So everybody is waiting here to get a paper boarding pass to go wait in another line, tsa security. [ cheers ] this morning, the lights are finally back on at the Busiest Airport in the world. Look around. Everything is happy again. Reporter but the fallout from the epic power outage here at a hartsfield is still being widely felt. More than 300 flights already canceled on top of 1,100 Flights Canceled on sunday. A passenger tweeting, literal pandemonium when the airport suddenly went dark. This video showing an airport employee sliding down a stalled and overcrowded escalator to help travelers in need. This created a big mess. A big mess. Reporter the loss of power trapping some passengers on planes for hours. In the terminals, an eerie anxiety as the airport blackout lasted more than ten hours. Ive never seen anything like this. Reporter sunday, 12 38 p. M. , the crisis begins. A tlent officials blaming a fire deep in the airports sprawling tunnel system, that fire so hot producing so many noxious fumes it takes firefighters and Georgia Power and light teams almost two hours to get to the source. That fire caused multiple faults in our system. Reporter without power, the control tower ordering planes on active taxiways to hold in place. Weve been out here for about two hours. Reporter in some cases, passengers exited planes right there on the tarmac. Inside the terminal, tsa security lines come to a stop. To airport trains shuttling passengers between terminals make it to their next stop and then stall. Airline Computer Systems shut down. Its still unclear what started the blaze. Officials working now to answer questions, including for those passengers on domestic and International Inbound flights to atlanta that were diverted. Its certainly going to be an open and transparent investigation. And the results are going to be made known. Reporter 275,000 people travel through the Atlanta Airport every day. With christmas only a week away, this may be a case of an early visit by the grinch. Were just thinking through all of the things. No cinnabon. All the things you want. You have to laugh. Otherwise, youd cry. Its awful, kerry. I know its going to take a few days to straighten out. Thank you. It is the beginning of a very busy week on capitol hill, highlighted by crucial votes on the republican tax bill. We learned late last night that senator john mccain will not be there. Hes returned home to arizona as he recovers from his ongoing brain Cancer Treatment. Nbcs chief White House Correspondent, hallie jackson, is on capitol hill with the latest. Reporter good morning. John mccains doctor is sharing more about how the senator is doing during what will be his noticeable absence on capitol hill. President trump is offering his words of support to mccain and his wife with a Senior Administration official echoing that. The republicans think they still have the votes they need to get the tax plan passed. No john mccain, no margin for error with the republican tax bill on the line. The word is john will come back if we need his vote. And its too bad. Its a tough hes going through a very tough time. Theres no question about it. But he will come back if we need his vote. Reporter the senator, battling brain cancer, has returned home to arizona, where he will spend the holidays, days after being hospitalized at walter reed medical center. Reporter tweeting now, my father is doing well, and were all looking forward to spending christmas together in arizona. Mccain is not the only senator fighting health issues. Mississippis thad cochran has also been absent lately but is expected to be back at work when the senate votes on taxes later this week. That, plus new lastminute support from bob corker and marco rubio means the senate will have enough votes to get its plan over the goal line. After the house votes tomorrow. Were on the 1 yard line. We intend to punch it in a good, strong way on tuesday. Reporter the 1. 5 trillion gop plan would double the standard deduction and cut corporate rates, with critics arking the bill mostly benefits the rich. What we are seeing here is a real massive attack on the middleclass. Everybody in every tax bracket will see a tax cut. So picking out one piece in a 1,000page bill and saying this is going to benefit somebody, it takes the whole bill out of context. Reporter the final tax votes are set to start tomorrow. But dont forget what else happens here in just a few days. That deadline to avoid a government shutdown. That means that by friday, congress will have to cut a deal to keep the lights on. All of it, hoda and savannah, setting up a jampacked end to 2017 here in washington. Hallie jackson on capitol hill. Thank you. Also on the president s plate, National Security. It comes as the probe into Russian Election meddling intensifies. Overnight, the president returning from camp david, insisting he has no plans to fire special counsel robert mueller. [ inaudible question ] no, im not. No. Reporter and yet, the president expressing new frustration with the investigation, seeming to back the claims of a lawyer for his president ial transition who says prosecutors improperly obtained thousands of transition staff emails. Do you believe the emails were improperly obtained . Not looking good. Its not looking good. Its quite sad to see that. Reporter a lawyer for trumps Transition Team says mueller should not have been able to obtain the emails, which he calls Privileged Communications from the federal General Services administration. The special counsel rejecting that claim, writing, when we have obtained emails in the course of our ongoing criminal investigation, we have the account oechbers consent or appropriate criminal process. Stephanie gosk is here with more on that story. Good morning, guys. From sports to hollywood with such widespread allegations, it seems in some cases the tide may be turning from accusations to questions of whether or not this is going too far. But first, this rec jobbing is now hitting the nfl. Championship game is overnight, a Sexual Harassment stunner in the sports world. Carolina panthers owner Jerry Richardson saying hell sell the team he founded at the end of the season. The move following a Sports Illustrated report that he and the panthers have made multiple confidential payouts for workplace misconduct, including Sexual Harassment and use of a racial slur. The panthers say they recently began an internal investigation. The Carolina Panthers and mr. Richardson take these allegations very seriously. And are fully committed to a full investigation and taking appropriate steps to address and remediate any misconduct. And this morning, a new wave of push back against Sexual Misconduct claims. Actress amy smart is fighting an allegation made in the Hollywood Reporter that her hgtv star husband carter oosterhaus forced oral sex on a makeup artist. An ms nbc spokesperson says the remarks were found to be in poor taste, but not as propositions. In a statement, msnbc says in 1999, this matter was thoroughly reviewed and dealt with. At that time, matthews received a formal reprimand. With all this going on, weve learned anita hill was tapped to be the chair of the Hollywood Commission for eliminatinging Sexual Harassment and advancing equality in the workplace. Hill famously came forward against accusations against clarence thomas, Supreme Court justice, in 1980. So many different strands to this story. Were going to switch gears and get a check of the weather for christmas. So its a week, right . Well show you what we think right now are the chances on of a white christmas, which basically means an inch of snow on the ground or more. Spokane, down to denver, light snow. Santa fe, chicago, pittsburgh, even boston just on the edge, beckley, west virginia. Look at what were expecting right now on christmas morning. Western twothirds of the country pretty clear. Frigid up in the plains. But were talking about snow. Theres a possibility one of the models that we could see a little light snow in parts of northern new orleans. Can you believe that . Thats crazy. Wow. And snow stretching all the way to eastern ohio into the northeast and parts of new england right along the i95 corridor. It looks wet. But we are going to be watching this very, very closely because its going to depend on the position of the rain snow line. It is still uncertain a week out. Some of the models differ, but were going to be watching this good morning. Im meteorologist, kari hall. We are going to have a nice and cool start to the morning. Also, all clear skies and a beautiful afternoon with much more comfortable temperatures, reaching the low to mid60s. Then we are getting ready for rain. A quickmoving rain that will be moving in later on tomorrow night for the north bay and the south bay. Early wednesday morning, its a quick one and done. We will have the potential to getting up to a tenth inch of rain. Thats your latest weather. Get your weather anytime you need it at the Weather Channel on cable. If it snows in in new orleans on christmas, its going to be the lead story. Exactly. Its early, but theres a possibility. That would be fun. Its not over by a mile. Nbc easts Kerry Sanders is there. Good morning. Reporter good morning. It is a nightmare. The georgia authorities have pinpointed the source of the problem. Theres something there called a switch. When the fire went up the lines, it burned seven lines. Now, as you can see, they did eventually get work crews to the location, but that took more than two hours because of the heat of the fire and the noxious fumes. Because it burned out the main power lines, but in the seven lines are the redundant power lines. The entire airport was without electricity. As you noted, Flights Canceled. The problem is delta the main carrier canceled an additional 300 for today. And everyone who was supposed to be on a flight yesterday and is now here at the airport today needs to get a printed boarding pass. You cant do it electronically because that system is now down. So all the people that you see in the line here are waiting to get printed boarding passes to then wait in another line. And that is the tsa security line. Each gift has an this is an nbc news special re we are following a developing situation in Washington State. In near the town of dupont, where a train has apparently gone off the rails and as you can see in this photo, it is some of cars have actually have on an interstate. Actually fallen on an interstate. This is interstate 5 southbound. Its, of course, the major north south ruoute along the wet coast. This train, we believe, was traveling between seattle and portland. Part of a new service. The Cascade Service on this road. You can see at least one of the passenger cars now is in the roadway. Another dangling. Its not clear whether there was a collision that proceeded this. People on the scene have reported a number of ambulances, as you might suspect, heading in the direction. These are some of the first images were getting now. Theres the route. You can see between seattle and portland. Nbc tom costello has been monitoring some of the pictures coming across social media. What do you know so far . Caller good morning. This was train 501. It was the inaugural day of service on the amtrak cascades high speed line. 14 miles stretch. Essentially from tacoma to olympia. And this derailed, we believe, just after the 7 00 a. M. Hour there on the west coast. 250 people on board this train, we believe. One of the cars, as you can see from the pictures, hanging over a bridge right down on to the highway. On to i5. And another car, we believe, awfully close to a body of water there. They declared this a mass casualty incident. We have multiple fire and rescue personnel and Law Enforcement responding to and already on the scene. The number of injuries we simply dont know, at this point. Its very much an active scene. In other words, people coming and going and trying to triage immediately those on the scene. Beyond that, we dont have a lot of details. It was the inaugural day for the brand new 14miles of track. Its difficult getting to the scene. Were told the weather is not conducive to helicopters. Which would, of course, affect any flights there. The southbound lanes of busy i 5 are closed in that direction. Ambulances and rescue crews doing the best they can to get to the situation. These are still photographs people have posted from the scene. The amtrak train, you heard tom suggest maybe as many as 250 people on board. No word on injuries or any other casualties on board that train. But you can see for yourself this is very, very serious. A situation that will take quite some time to unfold. We have been monitoring our nbc station out of seattle. Lets let you hear some of their coverage now. On people on board really shocking. Crazy to think ten minutes before the accident happened with, minutes actually, people thought it was going to be a great way to get to work. Obviously, we hope everybody is okay and well continue to follow this on social media. Im checking facebook, as well. People are sharing this story across the region and National Outlets mentioning this. Well keep an eye on this. For now back to you. We want to get to cam who has been following this from the traffic center. You were the first to spot this. What do you know, at this point . What im seeing besides emergency vehicles leaving the scene ambulances and traffic being moved to the right lane so more emergency vehicles can get to the crash scene on southbound i5. Taking a live look at the closest Washington State department of transportation camera that we can get a view of right now. Im just seeing a lot of tweets from officials now referring to this in many different ways as massive, massive response. Massive damage. Theyre not saying mass casualty, however, it is clearly being treated as a possible mass casualty incident. With so many Emergency Responders still heading to the scene. And this is the same camera view from right on the scene of the derailment that we were looking at a few minutes ago from chris karins. The Advisory Board chair who is actually on the train. So were just tracking the very latest as it comes in. And waiting to get confirmation and some kind of idea of how many people have been injured in this. All right. So were just now hearing from people who were either on board the train youre watching, as we did coverage from seattle on this tragedy on the tracks. We presume is a tragedy, certainly. You see the cars of the highspeed train. There was a great deal of excitement. There was a new service that went into affect. The new charger locomotives were initially going to be limited to more than 79 Miles Per Hour. We have no idea what speed it was going in this particular section when it jumped the tracks here. We dont know if it hit something. If there was some crossing there. But you can see the results here of the trains that left the track and some of them spilling over that tressel on to the roadway. This is southbound interstate 5. Obviously, a very its busy at any time of day there, but certainly in the morning rush hour. This is would be south of seattle. This would put it between probably tacoma and olympia, washington. There are a number of crews on the scene. This is a mass casualty, as tom costello pointed out. Tom continues to monitor some of the information coming out of the region. What do you have, tom . Reporter well, this is train 501, and it was a brand new 14mile stretch of track, we believe, from tacoma to olympia. At this point, the information is sketchy. We dont have the number of people that may be injured or potential fatalities. We know they have a multiple fire and rescue and ambulances moving into that location. Im already on the scene. 250 people reportedly have been on board this train. And it was such a big deal this inaugural day that the local station there had been doing the coverage on their morning news. Interviewing people who were excited about starting the day on this brand new train line. On this express train line. So well have to see what the cause may be. You know, they dont open up the brand new train lines without extensive testing and high speed testing. So exactly what the cause may be, we simply dont know. Yeah. What ive been reading, tom, they were positive train control you discussed so many times in terms of added safety feature in that area. We want to go back to seattle. Theyre talking to a witness now. Lets listen. Reporter definitely looked like there was a lot of big mess and stuff going down. Very devastating and traumatic scene down here. Are you seeing First Responders in the wreckage . Have you seen it yet . What are they doing . Caller they were just they kind of backed everyone up so you couldnt see too well. But before most of them got there, you could get somewhat close to what was going on a little bit. But theyre kind of the thing was dangling off the tracks there. There were people in the third car. Obviously it was app an amtrak train. What did you see specifically . Caller the front of it, it looked like, it was hanging off and another one piled on top. It looks like the third car was piled on topsideways. It was kind of on top of cars. Does it look like the train fell on cars below, coulter, on i5 . Caller yeah. Thats what it appears to look like. Oh, my god. Did i hear you say it appeared cars also, then, ran into it . Caller thats what it looked like. Yeah. It looks like cars crashed into the side of it. Before they could stop. Oh. From what you tell, were the injuries on the train or in the cars or both, do you think . Caller looked like both. It looked like it was coming from both sides there. This must be horrible for you to have seen Something Like this. I mean, you sound calm, but you cant be. Caller yeah, i was in front of it. It was nerve wracking sick to your stomach after seeing this now. Oh, gosh. Wow, okay. We cant imagine. Have you seen anybody walking away from the train . Caller no. They have everyone pretty blocked off. Pretty far backed up making people turn around. Okay. Caller not letting you get close. Get some room for aid cars. Is that what theyre doing . They turned the traffic around or the traffic completely stopped . They shut down the department of transportation camera. Caller yeah. Its pretty backed up a ways. Theyre trying to get people to turn around, but mainly getting people off to the side so they can get more help out there. Thats what the sheriffs were saying. Is this an area that is home to you . Do you live in this area . Is it a part of your daily commute . Caller umm, yeah, we go down to tacoma every day. It looks like they have every sheriff from every county around here now. Yeah. Its a mass response. Is there anything we didnt ask you that you could shed light on about what youve seen down there today . Caller i think thats about it. Just a mess and catastrophic now. We really appreciate you taking the time. We really do. We hope youre going to be okay after seeing something so horrible today, kolter. We appreciate you sharing with us today. K5s coverage out of seattle of this train calamity that occurred south of seattle in the area between tacoma and olympia, washington. Dupont is the closest town we have there. This photograph, obviously, taken after the incident. You dont see any emergency vehicles there. What you see is cars that stopped where they could. According to that witness, some of those cars may have struck the wreckage. You can see where your with your own eyes how it came down in the roadway itself. Its obviously a major interstate. So cars would have been likely moving at a fairly good clip when this happened. As we noted, this is a new train service. In fact, k5, the station we were listening to a moment ago one of the reporters was on board the train and had gone off prior to the impact. Described excitement on the train. People were excited about the new service between seattle and portland. A highspeed train that has been underwent significant testing over the last several months was capable of much quicker routes, you know, between portland and seattle. But limited, initially, were told to 79 Miles Per Hour. Again, we dont know the speed it was traveling. This is in Pierce County, about 15 miles of track had been upgraded to accommodate this new service. Again, whether that involves the track. Were looking at the trestle were looking at here, we dont know. Weve seen another traffic cam shot a moment ago of cars being directed off of i5. This is the immediate back up. Someone photographed right after the accident. No way to go. Vehicles simply pulled off. Again, some of them may have impacted that wreckage. It appears from what we can see only one or two cars actually off the trestle. As you look up the track a little bit, some other cars there you go. You can see one is totally down there. Another one dangling off. Another one behind that appears to be perhaps upside down. Ntsb is, obviously, monitoring this. Will determine whether to send a goteam. It seems apparent the photographs were getting now this will be a serious accident and likely will be hearing something with regard to injuries. But so far nothing. Jo ling kent is in our los angeles news room. Reporter good morning. Im here on the west coast. Were hearing its a massive accident. It happened near i5 near mount road on this new route. This is a route that has 14miles of new track. This has been new and updated track over the past several months. What we know what were seeing on social media reports of massive damage now. Law enforcement says people should avoid the area, and you can see why. That photo youre seeing there shows the car hanging off on to the road. As you mentioned earlier, this is is a route that is going from seattle to portland. A highspeed train. The ntsb right now gathering information, trying to figure out if they should be sending a team on to the scene. This is a new route that a lot of people in the area in the seattle area were excited about. This is the first service, reportedly, of this early route going in this particular direction. You can see those pictures are just harrowing with the train hanging off the bridge there and the overpass. Were hearing from Law Enforcement there are reports of massive damage to that area, lester. Jo ling kent who is monitoring reports coming in from Washington State. Pierce county along mount road is the most specific address we have for where this occurred. This picture here appears to be taken from the track level. So above the interstate 5 that we had been looking at. We learned from our partners at k5 that the weather is not suitable to fly in. We assume that would also apply to First Responders who might be flying in medical evacuation choppers. There were reports of a number of ambulances moving northbound toward the scene. You can see getting in the southbound lanes, getting to the scene may be problematic. Because of the sheer volume of traffic. Here is where the traffic appears to be theyre moving cars off in advance of that scene here. Trying to open space. We dont have any estimates now on injuries or other casualties from this accident. You can see the locomotive, we believe one of those new high speed locomotives still appears to be on the track. The rest of the cars are twisted in various locations. This area, we were told, had positive train control. You may have heard that discussed in previous derailments. It has to do with an ability to emergency stop of the train itself. Were told this was equipped with that kind of equipment. Jo ling kent, you have more for us . Thats right. We have new information from the Pierce CountySheriffs Department. Theyre saying now that the derailed amtrak passenger train which was going in the southbound direction has resulted in injuries and casualties. And numbers are to come. But Law Enforcement continues to gravitate toward the area to respond to this. But, again, the derailed amtrak train caused injuries and casualties. Again, this was a passenger train. A new route going the southbound direction, one of amtraks high speed services, lester. Jo ling kent with that information. Its sad to hear, but, frankly, expected given the enormity of what were looking at of the condition of that wreckage. Lets go back to tom costello right now. Tom, you have covered a number of amtrak accidents, and they have learned lessons from each of those accidents. I know its far too early to talk about what happened here. But typically what is going to happen now in terms of an investigation . Caller well, i would us is spent the ntsb is going to launch a go team quickly. Were monitoring the situation now, thats expected. Theyll quickly launch a go team probably from the west coast and then in addition to that their railroad experts from washington, d. C. This is about 40 miles south of seattle, we believe. At the moment i5 south is closed. Positive train control, to remind you, an automatic braking system. Which essentially slams on the brakes, if for any reason the train is exceeding the posted speed limit or any sort of obstruction or if there was any sort of a blockage on the tracks. The fact it comes with positive train control is interesting. That would, if its working, it should have automatic braking. It doesnt account if there was a problem with the tracks. We know it was a brand new stretch of tracks. Weve been saying 14 miles or so of new track. A brand new highspeed train. They would clearly have tested that. It would be difficult to test a train fully loaded during the testing phase. A lot will be part of the investigation. Not only the amtrak investigators and the ntsb and the federal Railroad Administration, as well. At this exact moment, the focus is on the casualties, it there are injuries and fatalities. And then trying to remove all of the twisted debris off the tracks and to reopen the interstate. But at the moment, obviously, a mass casualty situation unfolding. Tom costello, thank you very much. And were all seeing these pictures with the sense of shock and dread. And as we heard a moment ago from the sheriffs there in Pierce County, washington they are confirming there are injuries. No numbers. No word on the severity. Again, the pictures speak for themselves that this is a very serious accident. We want to update you again, if youre joining us train 501 between portland and seattle jumping the rails on this overpass. Over test trestles. We dont know for sure whether cars were hit or cars may have struck the wreckage. The picture is not that clear. One witness thought that maybe some of the cars had hit the wreckage. But right now the urgency is to get First Responders on the scene. This stretch of rea between seattle and portland know its congested all the time. Its a busy route. Thats why there was excitement over the high speed rail. Offering more opportunities for people to leave their cars behind. Obviously, the Christmas Shopping season. Many people in Washington State will want to cross over into oregon to take advantage of lack of sales tax there. A lot of commuters, shoppers, perhaps caught up in this. Lets go back to our nbc affiliate now k5 in seattle as they continue to cover. Well see if they have more information for us. Crews still coming to the scene. That an ambulance heading to the scene now. Not speeding. But presumably there are more injured people that still have to be treated there. Working to bring you the latest. Guys . We know that at least nbc news is reporting, so im going to say that Pierce CountySheriffs Department confirmed injuries and casualties. We also now have a confirmed there are injuries in this and casualties. We dont center numbe have nu. People have been injured and rushed to want hospital. Were waiting for more information about that. And well talk with our reporter live. He was on the third car that went off the tracks. And then transfer trains as he was reporting on these trains in the expanded route of amtrak this morning. Incredible to look at the pictures. Yeah. I want to get to the surface. Here is where were piecing this together. This was a Brand New Service from tacoma to portland. And here is essentially where this crash happened. Okay. This is right here at that overpass. Here is the straightway. Long straightway all the way to this point. As i zoom in here, you can see this is the first curve that these tracks or engineer would have encountered for several miles. So this is that was traveling southbound here. This is what youre looking at. This very curve right here. As we were presuming, theres actually a dip in the tracks there. We dont know the cause, again. But this is is a large curve just before that overpass. Last known speed 81 Miles Per Hour, according to the amtrak website, as joyce mentioned. No word on the number of casualties but cam noticed a lot of emergency vehicles traveling away from the scene northbound. Presumably lights and sirens taking people to the hospital. We know some good information there some useful information from k5 about the lay out of the track with regard to the interstate there that may offer some texture as we try to find out what happened. The larger issue is getting help to those who need it. Were getting updates now. Not only from the local sheriff but amtrak, as i understand. Lets go back to jo ling kent in our los angeles news room. Thats right. Amtrak coming out with a statement in the early hours after the accident. Amtrak says it is aware of the incident with train 501. The service is called Cascade Service from seattle to portland. Theyre on the scene now. Amtrak management is there. Theyre responding. They do confirm, as well, along with the Pierce CountySheriffs Department that injuries are reported. So right now that Service Heading in the southbound direction is temporarily suspended, as you can expect. That service from seattle goes north and then east and thats continuing to operate in those opposite directions. What you see now is a real reflection of the pictures on your screen. The injuries are reported and the Pierce CountySheriffs Department is also saying casualties are reported, as well, and those numbers are to come. Jo ling, to clarify. I think you said 504. 501 is the train. Thats right. Were on the same page. As we try to get new pictures from the scene, as you can imagine, those people who are there hopefully some of the folks there have, you know, offered whatever assistance they can. But the First Responders, obviously, trying to get to this scene. As we said, its not conducive to flying helicopters now. The ceiling was simply too low. A lot of cars to get through. We know they have been diverting traffic off that southbound 5. You can see from the radar picture there it continues to rain in that area. The area were talking about is seattle on the map. You can come on down and in the tacoma between tacoma and olympia, roughly. South of the seattle area. It looks like the entire state getting a soaking today. We want to go back to tom costello now. Tom is also monitoring this. Hes on the television. What else have you learned . Caller well, i think were very much dependent on local authorities to give us an update. When youve got this kind of mass casualty situation. All the information will come from the local Fire Department and the Sheriffs Department there. In the meantime, the ntsb is, obviously, beginning to move. I would expect a formal activation very quickly. Federal highway let me say that again. Federal Railroad Administration will be responding. Any time theres a Major Incident involving loss of life. They respond, as well as, of course, as amtrak. So this is very early moments, and the federal response at this moment is very much dependent upon what the locals are saying. A state d. O. T. Spokesperson confirmed there were 75 people on board the derailed portion of this train. We did have our local affiliates saying there are 250 people in total on board this train. So im not sure if that d. O. T. Spokesperson is referring only to the cars involved. And we dont have the number of injuries or anything else of that nature. Tom, actually, we do have an update. Just came across here. Its from the Pierce County spokesman ed shroyer. It includes multiple injuries and fatalities. Thats the first confirmation we learned loss of life in this derailment. It happened about 7 40 a. M. Pacific time. Those trains jumping the track. Some of the cars, as you can see, on to the roadway. Again, were learning there are deaths and injuries. Thats the extent we have. We have on the phone im sorry alex rozier is a report we are k5 in seattle. What can you tell us . Reporter lester, the scenario here is interesting. We were on the train. We just got off the train about 10 minutes before it derailed. Just outside of tacoma, washington. So here is the thing, this morning there was a brand new rail service that started from seattle to portland. Amtrak added to their Service Early in the day. So there was a brand new 6 00 a. M. Train that left seattle. And we boarded that when it took off this morning at 6 00. We got off at right before, i mean, ten minutes before it derailed. And all these people that we were speaking with are likely on board. And looking at the images were seeing. Im waiting in traffic now trying to get to the scene. But looking at the images that were seeing here its very clearly appears that the car we were on is the car that derailed here for many of these people headed potentially to olympia, which is the capital of washington. Or to portland, oregon on the train this morning. There would have been several stops along the way. Did it appear that every seat was virtually filled . Reporter it picked up as the morning progressed. And, yes, there was a wide variety of ages. And the thing about it, along with the people who were making the commute to portland this morning, as did maybe potentially for business. There were a number of rail enthusiasts. This was a big day for amtrak. Every single passenger got a little commemorative land yard they could wear announcing today as the first day for the new service. There were many rail enthusiasts that wanted to be part of the historic moment. Essentially, they added a brand new train session in tacoma, washington, which allowed them to expand their service. And this morning was the debut of it. They had 14 miles of new upgraded track, as they call it. And we dont know if this portion where they derailed was of that 14 miles new track. But, obviously, there was something along the way that caused this. As youre speaking, alex, we put up a photo. Its the first closeupshot of the wreckage. We can see one car that appears to be upside down. Totally on the roadway. Another on top of it. So this is our first most graphic look at the scene of the devastation there. Alex, did you get the sensation of speed . I know this is out toed touted as a highspeed train. Did you get a sense it was different than any other train youve been on . Reporter yeah. All the amtrak officials and the Washington Department of transportation officials that we spoke with had all said this train cut down their time. It was going to be a 3 20 minute train ride to portland, which was the fastest it has been since they started their service. It was a reduction of about 10 minutes, but its still faster than their previous service. And just the fact it happened on the first day. The very first train is quite shocking. And amtrak and both the Washington State department of transportation had a lot of questions here. Just to be clear, you were on board. You were doing a story on the new service . Reporter yeah. We were on board. We did live shots for our local broadcast here in seattle. All morning long. We concluded those live shots at 7 00 a. M. Local time. And we watched that train leave the station, and minutes after we concluded that live shot, minutes after we got off that same exact train, it derailed. And now were looking at what youre seeing here. Yeah, youre looking at it and i know were watching this tragedy unfold and there are fatalities, but youre a reporter and a person, too, who, you know, avoided this. Can you offer your personal thoughts for a moment . Reporter thats been the hardest thing. Im shaking still. The reality is that, yeah, i mean, im looking at the images. We were on car three and that appears to be, from the images im seeing, potentially the car that derailed. We met a wonderful man who was talking to me this morning just heading to work and he leaves seattle every morning for a town just outside of the state capital of washington. Just outside of olympia. And he was on board that train. He was so excited about the new early service. We saw what appeared to be two younger people at the end of the college semester. Maybe they were College Students heading home for break. Obviously its the week of christmas. Many of these potentially heading to see family and friends. Its just heartbreaking and, you know yeah without question could have been us. Alex, were happy that you and your crew are okay. We appreciate your reporting. Well let you get back to your coverage. Reporter appreciate it, lester. Thank you. That was alex rozier from king 5 in seattle. You remember his story, he was covering this inaugural service on this amtrak cascades line. And exited the train about 10 minutes before what you see on the left of the screen occurred. This derailment. One of the train cars off the trestle on to the roadway bed of interstate 5. Another know down on top of it. And one of the earlier shots it appeared another one that was tumbling on the other side. But the official word we got from officials there in Pierce County there are injuries and there are fatalities in this accident. We dont know how many. Theyve got to get, obviously, to the scene and assess it. Im sure theyll pasta informati pass that information along. The pictures were looking at, didnt speak to folks getting out of unscathed. We go to tom costello now and continue to monitor other sources on this. Caller well, lets remind everybody what positive train control is. The technology that is on all of these major fast lines, if you will. These express lines. Like this one in the northwest. Essentially u automatically allows for braking to avoid accidents. Thats the idea. Preventing traintotrain collisions or excessive speed or misaligned track. The fact this train had lost the train control really raises some questions there. Because supposedly that should have significantly mitigated the risks of an accident, at least on a stretch where you dont have much competition in terms of other trains. So this will clearly be of great concern to authorities as theyre trying to discern what happened. This is about 40 maiiles or so south of seattle on the brand new cascade line that goes from seattle to portland. Were told it was traveling in the neighborhood of about 80 Miles Per Hour or so at the time of the accident. Right at a place where we believe there is a straightway, if you will, on the track. But all of that is very much you have preliminary information as the ntsb and the federal Railway Administration and amtrak respond. Again, at this point, we have a report of both injuries and fatalities right there on i5 with i5 south closed. As you would expect, all southbound amtrak traffic also closed at this hour. Tom, you know, on the east coast, weve lived with and experienced high speed rail in the form for some time. That was limited by track condition. Caller thats right. How critical you have to replace the tracks before you can realize the full potential of the locomotives. Caller absolutely. They are literally, in some cases, doubling or tripling the potential speed of train. And so they have to be able to handle fully loaded train with a passenger weight, if you will, and moving that fast, and heat up the rails, of course, very quickly. They in the case of a northeast corridor, they absolutely had to improve and upgrade those tracks all the way from d. C. Up to bosston. On the northeast corridor not every single stretch of track is upgraded. The train cannot hit the full potential along the entire northeast corridor. I dont have firsthand knowledge as to how much the track there in the seattle tacoma area was. In fact, portland was, in fact, upgraded. You have to believe they did some upgrades to handle a speed approaching 80 Miles Per Hour. We can see in this picture here at First Responder perhaps a firefighter. Theres a ladder there that is perched up toward the wreckage. Obviously they have gotten to these cars right now. And are likely going through triage now. Perhaps there will be people who need to be extricated. Its, obviously, a precarious situation. There was one of the earlier photographs appeared to show smoke in the background. That car on its bottom there sustained a lot of damage. Hard to tell if its fire damage or not. But as you can see from that picture, you can see what appears to be smoke in the lefthand side of the screen. Imagine this now. This train thundering along. Derailing. The cars tumbling on to the roadway and you have southbound traffic moving along. We dont know if any cars were hit or whether any of those cars hit the train wreckage, we dont know how quickly traffic was moving. The weather, as we have been showing in the radar map, is rainy. The conditions were not good. Certainly for car travel. We dont know what effect that might have had on train travel. Nonetheless, the conditions are such they cant fly. They cant fly medical evacuations teams. This is a mass casualty event with a lot of departments converging on the scene. Theyve got to secure the wreckage. They have to tend to the wounded and extra candidate them and get them to hospitals. What we know there are injuries. There are fatalities, but beyond that we have no specifics. Jo ling kent continues to monitor her sources from los angeles. Reporter there have been multiple casualties as a result of this amtrak derailment near Tacoma Washington in dupont. This was reported, according to authorities around 7 40 this morning. The train was going in the southbound direction. Theres no official numbers right now on exactly how many injuries or casualties that were looking at. But we know that i 5 going in the southbound direction, the highway you see there is also being suspended and closed down by Law Enforcement. And Law Enforcement also saying to avoid the area due to the massive accident. But right now we dont have any specific numbers. We know, though, this was a new rail route leaving early this morning for the first time. Headed from seattle to portland. Its cascades route. Its commuter as well as scenic route for amtrak. Its a special kind of train there that has a gold sheen on it. It says cascades on the side. Its a special route for amtrak. First responders on the scene. Theres no sense of what caused this particular accident. No numbers yet on casualties or injuries. All right, jo ling kent, thank you. We were talking to alex rozier a reporter for king 5. He was on the train and got off about ten minutes before the accident. He described an excitement atmosphere of excitement. You had commuters on the new 6 00 a. M. Departure on the new highspeed train. You also had rail enthusiasts who wanted to be part of the inaugural trip. There were souvenirs given out to people. It was a mixed crowd enjoying the new service. It was promising to cut the commute between seattle and portland, i believe olympia would have been the next stop as it thundered the way south. Then this happens. You can imagine what it was like for him to learn the news that the train he was on had jumped the rails a few minutes later. There it is. That wreckage stretched out from atop that trestle to interstate 5 itself. And the cars that are backed up with no place to go. Many of the people witnessing this horror right in front of them. Im sure well be hearing from many of them as time goes on. Tom costello continues to join us on the telephone. Tom . Caller well, lester, unfortunately at the moment were in a wait and see mode here. As we wait to hear from local authorities. The extent of the injuries and fatalities. And certainly everyone is hoping the number is low. But the pictures would suggest the injuries could be quite severe given the fact youve got several cars now off the tracks on the brand new line. You will have multiple federal investigations as well as the local investigation. And among the question will be could positive train control could have played a role positively or negatively in this . Thats the new technology that was in place on this highspeed train. Were told it was, in fact, in place on the train. If so, did it function properly or not . And what might have been a contributor here . I think there will be probably looking very closely at the condition of this brand new set of tracks. In upgraded section of tracks that was carrying this highspeed train. All right, tom costello. Thank you very much. Let us quickly update you. It happened about 7 40 pacific time this morning. 10 40 eastern along above i5, if you will. This train, the 501 amtrak. Part of the new Cascade Service 6 00 a. M. Departure from seattle derailing as it was crossing over interstate 5. Coming off the trestle. At least one car, weve seen, of that train totally flat on the roadway. Apparently upside down. Another one nosed down on top of it. There was further wreckage up on the track itself. Officials there in Pierce County tell us there are injuries. There are fatalities. There are no numbers right now. Well continue to monitor this, as we get more information and well come back on the this morning on megyn kelly today, a consensual relationship or something more . A woman who says she has a sexual relationship with matt lauer tells her story to us live. Then, she has faith. A member of the Mormon Church challenges her own beliefs. And our month of merry freebie train rolls on through. All that and more on megyn kelly today. Hello. Hi. Hi. Happy monday, everybody. Happy monday. Thank you. Thank you very much. And soon in the show, i will explain why im wearing these pants
