Live. The mayor died at 1 11 am today tuesday, from an apparent heart attack. The mayor was just working yesterday even tweeting about a new public works project. Board of supervisors president london breed will be taking over as acting mayor for the time being. President london breed will now take over as acting mayor for the time being. Thats right. We heard from her just a moment ago. She was at city hall and thats where pete suratos is as well. Quite emotional there this morning, but really, you know, she presented that the city will be able to move on as well, pete. Reporter yeah, thats right, laura. Very passionate speech there. A statement by current acting mayor london breed, really drawing parallels between herself and mayor ed lee that passed away this morning. We reported about it all morning. Passed away at the age of 65. Im telling you guys, i believe the video youre seeing now, these are some of the images here. When youre here on this second floor at San Francisco city hall for folks that arent familiar with it, its a very big area. We saw plenty of people standing here, kind of waiting on every single word from acting mayor london brie as she talked about mayor lee and hundreds of people were overlooking the rotunda area in city hall. Some of the things that jumped out, she spoke about both of them growing up in public housing, the son of working immigrants. Talking about how he was the peoples mayor essentially in San Francisco and also talking about how he was as a mayor, specifically when it came to the economy. Resided over San Francisco during that big tech boom, bringing in more than 140,000 jobs to the city of San Francisco. Now outside of the those words by current acting mayor london breed, we also heard from a hospital rep. Were expecting to get more information on the cause of death when it came to mayor ed lee. All the hospital rep could tell us at this point is that mayor ed lee was brought to zuckerberg San Francisco general roughly around 10 00 p. M. He was in Critical Condition. They tried to work on him for a few hours and he eventually died at 1 11 a. M. The medical examiner at this time is not saying what the cause of death is, but we have reported at least through our morning shows during our conversations with former San Francisco mayor willie brown that it appears that a heart attack is the reason why mayor ed lee passed away at the age of 65. The way this is going to work as far as who the mayor is going to be. We heard from acting mayor london breed. She was currently serving at the board of supervisors president. Shes going to keep that role, at least for now, until certain things happen. From here, the board of supervisors will have the option, thats what we heard from the city attorney, to appoint an interim mayor. Whatever they decide from there, that interim mayor will serve until a special election in june of next year. From there, whoever that is, that person is going to serve the remainder of the mayors term until 2020. So in the meantime right now, technically current acting mayor london breed is also going to serve at the board of supervisors president here in San Francisco, but back to the scene here, guys, what we saw here at city hall. We saw a very emotional time. A whos who of elected officials. We saw the Lieutenant Governor here, that was the mayor that ed lee took over for when mayor nusome resigned and took on the role after humanity governor. Is this sound from current mayor london breed . So this is sound that were getting my producers are telling me. This is the current acting mayor london breed talking just moments ago. Like me, ed grew up in public housing. The son of working class immigrants, he developed early on a profound sense of community. A commitment to helping others. His father was a veteran and his mother a seamstress. They instilled in him a humility and work ethic that he maintained throughout his entire life. Reporter that was current acting mayor london breed speaking moments ago about the passing of mayor ed lee at the age of 65. Of course were going to have more information on this developing story, but a sad story overall here in San Francisco with the passing of mayor ed lee at the age of 65. All right. Thank you very much, pete. As you can see behind pete there, it is a very crowded News Conference that just took place there in San Francisco. In the meantime, while that was going on, we were watching a live procession through the streets of San Francisco inside that van is the body of former San Francisco mayor ed lee with a flag draped casket this morning. And standing on guard, there were several police officers, sheriffs deputies that you see there below saluting as that van was taken to the medical examiners office. At the same time as that News Conference. So quite a touching tribute. All the flag in San Francisco this morning as well are at half staff in tribute to the fallen mayor. We take a look there, this is footage from San Francisco outside of city hall, as laura was just saying, the flags at half staff there, just honoring the mayor, the late mayor ed lee. Thats right. Former San Francisco mayor and current acting govern gavin nusome, he was there at the News Conference as well but he also sent out a note in response to the mayors death saying, quote, San Francisco has lost a selfless leader, a dedicated servant to the public and a tireless bearer of equalitys torch. He goes on to say his optimism and contiguous love for San Francisco elevated the city to new heights. Governor jerry brown put out this statement, saying ed lee was a true champion for the working people and epitomized the california spirit. Hell truly be missed. Beautiful words. Want to talk to scott mczbgrew. Hes been taking a look at the remarkable life of ed lee. Many fingerprints on the city of San Francisco. Particularly in hightech. Remember, he didnt necessarily expect to become mayor. That was where it happened. Lee was appointed to Mayors Office after San Francisco mayor gavin nusome left city hall to go to sacramento and be the Lieutenant Governor. Lee said at the time he didnt want the mayors job but he would never run for reelection. Rose pac for credited pushing him into the election. Died in 2015, was a key influencer in San Franciscos chinese community, pushing lee to become the first Asian American mayor of San Francisco. So lee became San Franciscos 42ered mayor in january of 2011, appointed, not elected and almost immediately there was pressure on him to stay in the Mayors Office. Pressure came from voters, came from the chinese community, even the San Francisco giants. He won that election in november of 2011, ran again in 2015 and won again. He will certainly be remembered for many things, but one of his biggest civic accomplishments was drawing tech firms into the city and keeping them there. New residents to San Francisco, all the young people that have flooded into San Francisco in the last few years, may not realize all of those tech offices in San Francisco actually relatively new. It started here with twitter, which got a tax break that became known as the twitter tax break. Lee was fundamental in getting this done. And that changed San Francisco forever from a dotcom bus city to what you see today. You heard london breed talking about that. You cant imagine if youre fairly new what San Francisco is like just a few years ago. And lee, for better or worse, there have been, you know there was debate about it as well. Right. Has brought tech into the city and made it the city that it is today. Its amazing. The warriors were moving over there and what not. We talked about it a little bit this morning with former San Francisco mayor and also former california speaker of the assembly, willie brown. He joined us this morning on today in the bay. Here is a piece of that interview now. His ascendency to the mayorship was almost natural. He was not and did not come from a political world, so to speak. He had come from the world where merit determined whether or not you got the gig. And thats why he was so natural for me and when nusome moved on to the Lieutenant Governorship that ed lee would become his successor. And of course we will have continui continuing coverage on this breaking story. We started at 3 00 a. M. You can head over to our website, nbcbayarea. Com, for insta instant coverage. He died this morning at the age of 65. We were just hearing that he was taken to the hospital in Critical Condition last night around 10 00 and dying around 1 11 this morning. The medical examiner not determining the cause of his death right now, as we wait for that, but many people said he died from an apparent heart attack. And of course lee leaves behind two adult daughters. Unfortunately, the family really is no stranger to sudden tragedy. No, in fact, in 2013, at the Lowell High School graduation, mayor lee talked about losing his own father. For me, i lost my father when i was a sophomore in high school. So i knew that my days ahead were not going to be very easy. In fact, i made up my mind as a graduate of Public High School that i was pretty much going to go it alone, even though my father had reared me as a cook and my mom was a seamstress all of her years, but she had five other kids to take care of and i did not want to be a burden. And the San Francisco giants are also sending their condolences to mayor ed lees family and the city he served. The giants ceo had this to say this morning. Im going to remember the mayor as somebody who was full of warmth and a good honest, decent human being. And sometimes those people, you know, dont always fall into politics. He was really a caring high integrity, decent human being. Weve been hearing that a lot baer went on to say that lee considered at t park his happy place. He would come there for the playoff games and mingle with the fans. A lot of fun there. He also helped celebrate the teams championship. Look at that. California senator Dianne Feinstein releasing a statement as well this morning, writing early this morning i learned of ed lees death. Its a very sad dane for San Francisco and all of us who knew ed. Employ thoughts turn to his family, especially anita, brianna and tania. I wish i could give anita a hug and express my sorrow. Ed was was an excellent mayor. His quiet management style allowed him to solve problems as they occurred. My heart and thoughts are with eds family and friends and the city i love. Snake road, and i can tell you in the last 20 minutes, i got confirmation that, in fact, this road is damaged. Right now theyre trying to figure out the extent of that. The battalion chief took us in for a closer look a few minutes ago. Im no engineer but i can tell that the roadway is damaged. The pylons are charred and the supportive material spilling out the side of the roadway. You can see whats left of the two homes, two of the five that were destroyed. The view from nbc bay areas skyranger, this is where that 18mileanhour winds were pushing the fire up the hillside near snake road where we are. This is what it looked like though as the fire was spreading from the twostory home to another home on snake road and then three more. 500 people were ordered out of the mt. Claire neighborhood and spent nearly the whole night at an Evacuation Center at mt. Claire elementary school. The battalion chief told me he is surprised this fire wasnt worse. We had flames probably about 100 feet in the air. With the flames, the embers were flying with the 18mileanhour winds and we had rain of fire embers all the way past where i was positioned at down there. Reporter now, two of the homes destroyed were under construction so no one was living there yet, but we do know that three other families did lose their homes. Theyre going to have to find a new place to stay for quite some time. By the way, this is the first day back for oakland city crews after their sevenday strike. You saw a number of aides here. A number of people that knew the San Francisco mayor. A lot of sadness here. In fact, i think were showing you guys some of that video. Were here on the second floor overlooking the rotunda. You had people here on this floor, the third floor, the fourth floor all watching acting mayor right now london breed speaking about San Francisco mayor ed lee. Some of the things she talked about, his blue collar background, him growing up in public housing, so he could relate to a number of people here in the city of San Francisco and highlighted his success of bringing jobs to the city, of course, during her terms. He resided over the tech boom here that you could say here in San Francisco. Now, as i mentioned, there were a number of people here speaking. I want to show we want to get to some sound of the current mayor of San Francisco, acting mayor london breed speaking in the past half hour, as well as former San Francisco mayor gavin newsom who said he saw ed lee not too long ago. Heres what they had to say. The flags in our city will fly half mast for the next 30 days. Our First Chinese american mayor, a man who has left an immeasurable legacy for the city and county of San Francisco. And i now must assume the responsibility, and i ask for your patience and i ask for your support and i ask for your prayers. He was a mentor. He was an adviser. He was a supporter. Incredible father. Great husband. I saw so many things he did that, you know, were never made news or never in print. A decent, honorable person with a legacy that will be appreciated as we come to reflect on a guy that always tried to do the right thing. Reporter of course gavin newsom, the states current Lieutenant Governor, was the mayor at the time when mayor ed lee replaced him. California senator Kamala Harris tweeted her reaction as well, writing, i am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, San Francisco mayor ed lee. He was a fierce advocate for civil rights and worked tirelessly for workers rights and his leadership will be missed. Keeping the mayors family in my prayers during this difficult time. Scott mcgrew continues with his coverage. Youve been talking about this all day. A lot of people are shocked by this but a lot of people remembering the good times as well. Certainly. Youve got to remember when we talk about the history of mayor ed lee, how unusual that path was and pete suratos touched on that. We were talking earlier, ed lee appointed to his first term as mayor after gavin newsom left for sacramento. He promised never to run for reelection and pressure true for him to run anyway. Here is nbc bay area reporter tracy grant back in 2011. Reporter the campaign to encourage a man to campaign has come to an end. Run, ed, run, wrapped up several months of work with this rally in front of San Francisco city hall today. Hopefully the work that weve been able to accomplish over the past few weeks is enough to really encourage ed lee to run for mayor. And, indeed, they were successful. That was our reporter tracy grant in dlechb. Now, who exactly was pushing lee to run was this interesting mix of the chinese community, the business community, even the San Francisco giants. You may remember, a video put together by the run, ed, run committee. I thank you for blessing me and the rest of the city with mayor ed lee that was funny. I remember that. Run, ed, run. Too legit to quit. Lee would go on, hed run, hed win, he would run again. He would win. In 2013, though, he was eclipsed by a kid as he the key of the city over to him. That kid, we are so proud of you. Youve done such an amazing job today and dont be surprised if we have to call you tonight. We might have to signal you from the sky to help save us from additional villains and evil doers. That was such a great day. This may be my favorite San Francisco moment. It was amazing. Really nice tribute on this sunny tuesday morning. We bring up the sun this morning because kari halls got a look at that forecast for us. We started out pretty cool here in the bay area, but the sun comes out. Yeah, the sun comes out, it warms things up and we are going to have a beautiful afternoon today. And hopefully if youre getting out there and walking around, taking in that sunshine, we will have some fairly mild weather for the next several days as well. Here is a live look at fremont. Busy out there on the roads and a live look outside over san jose. Weve seen a little bit of a haze, too, through the air and thats because of the unhealthy air quality that weve had and some very dry weather here. And also that dry weather, that low humidity, gives us some very chilly mornings and warm afternoons. So right now were getting a little bit more of the warmer temperatures, especially in the south bay. Look at santa cruz, morgan hill were in the low 60s, upper 50s for san jose, but we still do have some upper 40s in the north bay is in santa rosa. Soon will be in the low 50s. We did get down to 28 degrees there in the north bay. It was really cold. A lot of work to do to warm up the temperatures. As you get a look at the sevenday forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen showing more of those 60s and 70s over the next few days. It is going to be very mild. Well above normal. Up to 69 degrees in danville. In oakland, 65 degrees, 65 in san mateo and in San Francisco, 67 at the outer sunset. North bay at 65 degrees. And sonoma and santa rosa at 66 degrees. We may be setting some new records here. The past several days weve seen a few of the cities setting new record High Temperatures. Santa rosa, well, the old record is open 60 degrees. In concord, the record is 63 degrees there. Napa, the record is 60 and we are looking at some highs in the upper 60s today. If youre going out on your lunch break in napa, 60 degrees already by noon and then we should see our high up to 64 degrees at 2 00.
