Lee passed away early this morning, tuesday, december 12th at 1 11 a. M. At Zuckerberg San Francisco general hospital. Family, friends and colleagues were by his side. The 43rd mayor of San Francisco was 65 years old. Our thoughts and prayers with his wife, aknnita and his daughters and entire family. In accordance with the city charter, i assume the role of mayor of San Francisco effective immediately. I want to thank the invedable staff at zuckerberg general for their care and professionalism. Reporter profound sadness is the best way to um up what we saw on the faces of those folks here this morning as they held that News Conference roughly around 3 30 a. M. Regarding the passing of mayor ed lee. Its having a big time impact here in San Francisco and abroad. Moments ago you talked with former San Francisco mayor willie brown. He is the one that, when i spoke to him on the phone, he confirmed during that interview, information he had, mayor ed lee may have passed away as a result of a heart attack. I believe we have sound we can play for viewers talking about the legacy of mayor ed lee. Caller to the mayorship was almost natural. He did not come from a political world, so to speak. He had come from the world where merit determined whether or not you got the gig. Thats why he was so natural, for me, and when newsome moved on to lieutenant governorship. Reporter as former mayor of San Francisco, willie brown talking about lees legacy, his ascension to that position. I know we talked about it this morning. He was appointed to becoming San Francisco mayor in 2011 before winning election and reelection in that role. Now, mayor ed lee is survived by his life anita and daughters brianna and tania. A very emotional time for them. As the family and friends, really the city deal with this unexpected death of such a powerful figure in the city. During that press conference, they did not announce the cause of death. We are just getting that information from former smo mayor, will lay brown. There will be another meeting at 10 00 a. M. We are hoping to get more information at that time. We will continue to follow the story. As we get details, we will bring it to you. We spoke to, you know, willie brown there. I was going to add he was just with mayor ed lee not long ago saying he was in good health and good spirits. We are moving on as well showing a Twitter Response from new york city mayor, bill de blasio. Sad to hear of ed lee. Our thoughts are with his family. Getting a lot of reaction. It is shocking news to many. He was only 65 years old. When you think about it, he never wanted to be the mayor. Looking at his tweets here, you know, some of those tweets posted yesterday. He was busy to the end. One announced the launch of a Pilot Program making it easier for residents to recycle. He tweeted of his recent visit to chicago attending a climate summit. He was a big proponent of facing fossil fuels. Ten hours ago, he tweeted about new city legislation to rebuild safe housing and ending the practice of illegal and unsafe dwellings. When we spoke to the former mayor of San Francisco, willie brown, he talked about the legacy that lee will leave behind adds well. Scott mcgrew joins us now. He talked about silicon valley, in a sense, coming to San Francisco. Leaving a big imprint there. He changed the face of San Francisco. I think mayor brown made it simple as to how ed lee became mayor. Its not clear he wanted to be mayor. Some people and city supervisors didnt want him to be. There were several votes. He was appointed after newsome became the lieutenant governor. He didnt want the job and would never run for reelection. This woman is credited with pressuring him into it. Rose pack died in september, 2016. Key influencer in the San FranciscoChinese Community. Really the key influencer in the Chinese Community. She paved the path for lee into the mayors office. He became 43rd mayor of San Francisco january 2011, appointed, not elected. Almost immediately, there was pressure to stay in the mayors office. Pressure came from the voters, Chinese Community and San Francisco giants as well. He wins in 2011. He runs again in 2015. Thats the second or third term, depending on how you count it. Hes remembered by a lot of things. You touched on the transformation of San Francisco from a city that suffered through the dot com bust. The heart of silicon valley, everything was booming here. Hard to imagine for people who moved into San Francisco in the last eight years to imagine what San Francisco was like. How different it was. Beautiful city. It always has been, but didnt have twitter, for example. Yeah, theres twitter. Twitter was key. Laura, you are right. Twitter was key because of the twitter tax break. Ed lee convinces twitter to stay in town. There was a certain stand off over that. Twitter, ultimately stays in town and that creates a long stream. Market street, the boom there, amaze zing. All right. Thank you very much for giving us that perspective as well. We will have continuing coverage on this breaking story all morning long. Head to our website, www. Nbcbayarea. Speaking of a car wash, today might be a good day to wash the car. Oh, yeah. If you havent already, we have several more days of dry weather and starting to get dusty now, right . We are going to have chilly temperatures this morning. If you are in the north bay, you cant go through the car wash just yet, freezing temperatures. A live look outside in San Francisco, its all clear this morning. We will still have that unhealthy air quality we have had recently as High Pressure keeps it dry and keeps a lot of the smoke and pollutants near the surface. This is what i was talking about. Look at santa rosa, 29 degrees. Fairfield, 28 degrees. Really cold out there. One degree above freezing or two degrees above freezing in livermore and san jose and palo alto. It is 40 degrees. We may be setting record highs today from santa rosa to concord down to napa. Extreme changes in the temperatures from morning to the afternoon. O oakland will be a few degrees above the record high. Hayward, well set a record there as well. We go into the High Temperatures today, reaching the upper 60s. San jose, a high of 69 degrees and thats still below our record high of 79 degrees for today. One free event to check out today, the San FranciscoBotanical Garden will be free and we start out at 48 degrees. Cool start, but a lot more comfortable for later this afternoon. Finally, we are going to see a change in the pattern as we go into next week. Here we are on wednesday of next week and an area of low pressure will be dropping in. That could bring us a chance of rain, staying dry in the seven day forecast. Inland areas up to 70 degrees. Mike, you are tracking a new crash . I am. It started with a disabled vehicle. It may be involved in the crash. The bottom of your screen, we see anything other than green. The volume starts to build over the last 20 minutes for san jose. North 101, a round and another north. Those are where the two are reported. A stall and a crash and maybe the same incident. We see a build coming off 680. In general, pushing north through san jose. The south bay sees the slowing sensors as we expected a slower drive at the bridge. Lets take a live look. We had that crash blocking the upper lanes and traffic stopping toward the toll plaza. Traffic is flowing well. I saw an ambulance travel through the shot as well. It may be on the shoulder, a distraction. A quick look at the san mateo bridge. We are looking at a slower drive across 92. More traffic pushing toward san mateo and you are going to see more traffic for 101 and 92 at the interchange. Back to you. Really picking up there.
