Larry joins us live to zero in on key points and how it may affect you and your familys lives. Thats next. The final outcome of the republican tax cut plan, but g welcome back. Most americans are waiting for the final outcome of the republican tax cut plan. Gop leaders are already working on part two of their government restructure effort. Reduced spending for Social Security and medicare. Nbc bay area political analyst larry is here to focus on it. The programs affect millions of americans, a lot of our parents. Why turn to them now . Okay. Lets begin, first, with the tax cuts. Okay. Because the tax cuts are going to be related to the republican proposals to make cuts in Social Security and medicare. Thats the connection. 70 of those cuts go to corporations and businesses. 30 individual. Mostly, at least. Not all. On the personal income side, the Nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimated the top 1 of taxpayers will receive half the savings. They can argue about whether the tax cuts will be distributed equally or not at all. The simple fact is the tax cuts add 1. 5 trilli 1. 5 trillion to trillion National Debt by 2027. By the way, this year is responsible for 600 billion to the National Debt. The new tax cuts add to this amount. Wow. Big dollars. I would love to get into the National Debt discussion, but for now i will restrain myself and ask you, this might be a dumb question, but what do the tax cuts have to do with medicare and Social Security . How does that reduce spending . How does the tax cut affect the reduced spending . There is a potential connection we need to understand. Given the cost of the tax cuts to the treasury, republicans are looking for major targets to reduce the annual budget deficit and National Debt. What would they be . Social security and medicare are known as entitlement programs for their historic importance for broad swaths of the american society. The average Social Security check is 1400 a month. Here is the most important part. For every dollar someone pays into Social Security, he or she will receive an average of 2. 40 in Social Security medicare benefits. That difference between contributions and distributions amounts to 2. 8 trillion annually, which is why Congressional Republicans see the social welfare areas as rich targets. That would almost double that portion of the National Debt we were just looking at. So, what might those Social Security and medicare cuts look like, if it goes through . Here is where we look into the crystal ball. No doubt, heavy debate and heavier lobbying. Here are possibilities, reducing or eliminating medicare for wealthy taxpayers, inclusing the individual medicare contributions from 1. 49 to a higher percentage. Perhaps privatizing Social Security making people to invest Social Security funds. Lets remember, one important fact, Social Security and medicare are known as the third rail of american politics. Like the middle rail of a bart train track, its hot. In this case, extremely controversial, particularly when someone wants to tinker with either area. Oh, yes. How likely is it that this will change . The tax cuts, a recent poll shows 26 of americans favor the tax cuts because of the double cut with corporations and wealthy taxpayers. 2018 is an election year. Congressional republicans need to be careful about their policy decisions in terms of the millions of people receiving Social Security and medicare. Nonetheless, President Trump and republicans in congress ran in 2016 on tax reform. Its better described as tax cuts as part of the platform. Whether its sturdy enough to get reaction at the polls from Senior Citizens and allies remains to be seen. The bottom line, the tax cuts are part one. Now we have to find more money that we have just taken away. Maybe we ought to look at Social Security. Maybe we ought to look at medicare. These are things that affect us all. Wish we had more time. Larry, as always, thank you. Well be right back. Stay with us. Good morning. It is 7 53 on this sunday. We are off to another cold start. Temperatures in the 30s right now. The south bay at 37 degrees. The peninsula, 37 degrees and trivalley at a chilly 33. Its the north bay that is waking up to a nice, cold bite at 28 degrees. San francisco, right now, 47 degrees. In the east bay, 42 degrees. Now, we can expect to keep these clear skies in the forecast. The reason for that being hourbyhour outlook, we can see that High Pressure sitting over the bay area. Thats been keeping us nice and dry. Its also been bringing us mild afternoons. We can expect to keep hazy skies. They will continue. We have that third day of the spare the air alert that remains in effect tonight. The High Pressure keeps it chilly night and the mild afternoons. The rain off to the pacific is not anything that is going to affect us. In fact, the outlook shows dry conditions, maybe through the rest of december month. Inland, east bay and south bay we are dealing with moderate conditions right now. If you cant avoid being outside, be careful. It will be tough considering the nice temperatures. In terms of the High Pressure rk, its good for keeping us dry. This is the wind map in Southern California. Its a difficult situation because of the wildfires. The wind gusts, it looks like they are expecting gusty conditions into tonight as they head into tuesday and wednesday. Thats when we might catch a slight break. Thursday, it picks up again, which is why there is a red flag warning in place for Southern California because of those conditions out there. If you have family and friends out there, reach out to them. They are dealing with a tough week ahead. As far as the next seven days, we have the High Pressure over the area for quite a while. Thats going to keep the skies clear into monday, tuesday and wednesday. You notice the temperatures are going to be slightly warmer. Above seasonable in some spots by 57 degrees into the inland areas. Tomorrow, we are talking 70s for the forecast. Tuesday and wednesday, upper 60s. Then we keep the dry conditions through the weekend. We are not tracking or monitoring any rain ahead, which will be great. We might pick up in terms of the breezy conditions in the bay area into the middle of the workweek. However, as the High Pressure sits over the area, it may or may not keep the air quality on the down spiral. We are going to keep a close eye on that with all the wildfires burning in Southern California. Its something we have to keep a close eye on. For now, it is going to keep the weather pattern very calm for the next several days. Possibly through christmas day. We are not talking rain although Southern California needs the rain. Thanks. Before we go, we want to tell you that ugly christmas sweaters are a common sight this time of year. Did you know it can benefit your travel .
