Garvin when you take a look at marty brounsteins body of work as an author, something immediately stands out. One of his books is not like the others. Marty absolutely, and i always say, its the most difficult thing ive ever done, but its probably the most important thing ive ever done. Garvin marty is a longtime management consultant, whose writing credits mostly include books in the for dummies series. Martys latest book, however, is a world away from that, yet very close to his heart. Marty its a true story of rescue in the holocaust. Theres not many of those stories that are well known. Garvin two among the righteous few a story of courage in the holocaust tells the story of frans and mien wijnakker, a dutch couple who saved the lives of over 2 dozen jews during the Second World War by hiding them in their home and from the nazis. Marty all right, good start. Other factors of why so few helped garvin marty says the idea to write the book began with a trip in 2009 to the netherlands with his wife, leah. Marty this is a story ive stumbled into by accident, not by design. Garvin it was there they met the wijnakkers children and began to learn the littleknown story of their parents heroism. It was then mary saw a picture of a plaque at the Holocaust Museum in israel honoring the wijnakkers. Marty see, i knew what that meant. Im blown away. You dont get that for just showin up. Something heroic happened here. Marty hopefully, you can learn, the wijnakkers had love, not hate. Garvin two years and multiple trips later, the book was finished, but marty wasnt. While on his book tour at schools, libraries, and houses of worship, the response has been so positive, he has just kept going. Mary and leah have now done more than 500 events. Marty my journey now in sharing this story is almost 6 years complete. The seventh year is well booked. Who would expect that . Marty there you go. Hes human, he got scared. Garvin its not just the feedback though that keeps marty going, its a sense of duty as well. He, you see, is not just honoring heroes. Hes thanking them. Marty i brought the baby with me here today, folks. Garvin for the youngest person the wijnakkers saved marty yes, applause is most welcome. Garvin is leah, martys wife. Marty thank goodness for them because i get to enjoy the miracle of what they helped make happen. It doesnt get any more meaningful and personal than this, folks. Garvin our next story takes us to the baseball field, where david benzer is now helping others strike out fear after a cancer diagnosis. Benzer is part of the giants broadcast crew. His story, though, stretches well beyond the field and into the cancer wing of local hospitals. [crowd cheering] garvin the San Francisco giants fan lucky enough to grab a frontrow seat at at t park david benzer oh, boy, bases loaded. Garvin still sits one row behind david benzer and has for close to 40 years. David its been my passion and my pride and my heart to do this, yeah. David nice play. Garvin david has been a cameraman for the giants tv broadcast for more than half his life. Behind the lens, next to the visitors dugout, his home away from home. David being a cameraman out in the elements and feeling that all, and feeling that emotion, youre just one step from that white line. David good luck today. Garvin davids cool job with all the cool friends he made along the way meant everything to him, defined who he was, really. So, you can imagine how great it felt in 2010 to celebrate his first world series with the team. It didnt feel great for long though. Feeling ill, david went to the doctor the very next day. David youve got stage four cancer, throat, tongue, and lymph node. I was like, so, dont we do a test . He said, no, i see it everywhere. Garvin what followed were months of radiation and chemotherapy. It was absolutely brutal, david says. David cause they take you right to death, and then bring you back. So, at my lowest point, i promised god. If you gave me a second chance. Id make a difference. And i have. David the whole thing is about distracting all that fear that is manmade. Garvin from that promise has come this, the strike out fear foundation. David rebuilds hospital waiting rooms garvin you see, in davids experience, the fear that came with a cancer diagnosis was just as bad as the disease itself. David because the fear really affects with the cancer. She works together with that. Shes almost fuel to us. Garvin the Foundation Money goes to transforming hospital waiting rooms into more comfortable, hopefully, less fearful places. Their work has since touched the lives of close to 50,000 cancer patients. David thirtyfive, take five. Garvin david is thankful to no longer be one of them and able to keep doing his job. He still loves the perch that lets him see everything on the field. Its just no longer everything to him. Garvin ever since massive floods hit san jose in february, theres been a lot of blame to go around for who was at fault, not a lot of praise. However, when it comes to deb cramer, that praise is definitely deserved. Deb cramer the zone youre gonna start in, i think youll just need one bag. Garvin deb cramer believes in the power of the humble list. Over the past 3 years deb incoming. Garvin organizing cleanups for her nonprofit, keep coyote creek beautiful, deb has relied heavily on lists. Deb what it is that needs to happen garvin checklists to make sure she has the equipment she needs. Deb so, if i have a team of leaders garvin email lists to make sure she has the volunteers to do the job. Deb so, well need you to get a vest. Garvin so, deb knows the power of them to get her day job done, but had no idea what her lists could mean in a disaster. Not until, that is, there was one. On february 21, coyote creek overflowed its banks, flooding homes, neighborhoods, and parks. Deb and then the one that was amazing to me garvin the very next day, deb went down to the creek she know so well to survey the damage and was stunned by what she saw. Deb thats when it was, like, okay. So, i called the Mayors Office and i said, hey, paul, im here. Let me know if you want any help. Garvin paul pereira is with the city of san jose and had worked with deb in the past, so he knew she could help. But even he was surprised just how much. Paul pereira i mean, were beyond grateful. Its just, i dont think i can ever thank her enough. Deb so, we dont have to worry about that. Garvin you see, within a matter of days, deb provided a checklist of equipment she would need from the city, and then she tapped her list of willing volunteers. Deb over the course of 4 days, we got about 1,200 volunteers just to go in to 3 neighborhoods. Garvin and over the next 3 days, another 800. Thats 2,000 volunteers in just 7 days. They went into homes and down to the creek, going a long way to returning life to normal along its banks. Deb there you go. You got a pair. Garvin deb is quick to deflect any praise, saying shes simply a good organizer. Others, though, are more generous, believing on the list of people the city has to thank, deb should be right near the top. Garvin coming up on this bay area proud special, a tv anchors disappearance more than 20 years ago still haunts a bay area woman to this day. Caroline you would hope that somebody would do it for your family. Garvin her mission to bring the missing womans family some closure. And how a South Bay School rallied to put on a production after the sudden death of a beloved director. Anchor never showed up for work. If the case of what happened to her is ever solved, it might just be because of the work of a north bay woman. Caroline see if doug is around. Garvin Caroline Lowe was a bigcity Television News reporter for more than 30 years. Caroline just wondered if youre hearing anything. Garvin the number of stories she covered during that time stretched well into the thousands. Caroline im just circling back on the timeline garvin the number she is desperate to finish is down to just one. Caroline and just, jodis missing, and i still feel that sense of Unfinished Business. Jodi huisentruit one of americas most garvin Jodi Huisentruit was the Early Morning anchor at kimt in mason city, iowa. On june 27, 1995, jodi left her home for work, but never arrived, and has never been seen since. Christine this is visiting jodis newsroom. Garvin at the time, caroline was working in neighboring minnesota. She didnt start covering jodis story until a couple of years after her disappearance, but has not stopped in the more than 20 years since. Christine this article was from 2 years after jodi disappeared. Garvin now living in petaluma, caroline has spent years as part of a team of investigators dedicated to solving, once and for all, the huisentruit case. Christine well, im trying to track down the name of the woman who was the manager that night, but garvin why . Well, after years of covering cops and crime, caroline understood that long after a story falls out of the headlines, there are victims and families who still deal with the fallout. Christine cause you get attached to them. You do identify with them, and you would hope that somebody would do it for your family. Garvin in other words, while caroline might have covered hard news, it never hardened her. Its something she wonders if she could have one day taught jodi. Christine jodi was a minnesota gal, who had dreams of going to the twin cities someday, where i worked. We very possibly wouldve worked together if things would have taken a different turn. Doug murboch, i just spoke with today, jodis garvin that, of course, never happened. But finding jodis body, or even her killer still might, giving her family closure, and a reporter the chance to write, once and for all, case closed. Garvin the show must go on. Its a bit of a cliche in the world of entertainment, but cliche or not, the show did go on at Bellarmine College prep in san jose when they recently put on a touching performance to honor their late leader. Maren all the lion family garvin when maren lane calls the theater her home, she doesnt just mean its a place she feels comfortable. Maren move down, there you go. Garvin what she means is the old theater at san joses Bellarmine College prep is where she spent a good chunk of her childhood. At least, that is, if she wanted to spend time with her dad, tom alessandri. Maren so, i would come here cause i wanted to spend time with him, and he would include me. And that was super great cause i felt like i could be part of his world. Garvin for more than 30 years, tom, or ta, as his students called him, led the Theater Program at bellarmine, directing multiple shows a year on top of a full Class Schedule teaching english. Maren began helping her dad behind the scenes on productions before she was even in high school herself. Maren are the two stools on the right side . Garvin they worked on many shows together, including toms latest, maren technical directing his alumni production of a play called swift justice. Until tom died, that is, just 2 weeks before rehearsals were set to start. Maren well, definitely sudden, which was the hard part. Maren well let you know. Garvin maren knew she still wanted to put on the show, but couldnt replace her dad all by herself, so she turned to the cast and crew and asked for help. Maren they all said, yes. Yeah, they all said, yes. Brendan mccall really appreciate all your work youre doin so far. Please keep it up. Garvin Brendan Mccall is a former student who knew tom for 30 years. Now a theater professional himself, brendan took on the task of directing swift justice in addition to acting in it, working directly from notes tom had written himself. Brendan when people we care about suddenly leave us, i wonder, do they have any Unfinished Business . And i feel like, in this case, theres actually a concrete thing that i know ta wanted to do. He wanted to do this show. Brendan you know what that means garvin and so, for 4 nights this month, that is just what they did. They put on not just a performance but a show, a show of respect for a mentor and friend, and a show of support for those he left behind. Garvin still ahead, way beyond the call of duty, a bay area family is not just thanking a Police Officer for how he did his job, but how he helped out their teenage daughter. And who doesnt wanna shoot their friends with marshmallows . Some berkeley teens use their latest creation to help orphans halfway around the world. Cer who responded to a burglary at their home, and its not just for returning what was stolen. Twelveyearold Charlotte Luther rides a speciallyequipped tricycle with three wheels. She struggles with balance and strength after being diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and battling a brain tumor. Her family raised 4,000 to buy the special trike. One day, a burglar took off with it. Officer dan fachner found the tricycle less than 24 hours after it had been stolen. Charlotte thank you for how you found my bike. Officer fachner no matter how small a case may be to you, it may be big to somebody else. Garvin and thats not all officer fachner did for charlotte, though. Because of her bipolar disorder, police had been often called to the luthers house in the past. Charlotte was not comfortable around them. But what officer fachner did has now changed that. Garvin this next story is all about fun and games, and its all for a good cause. Ollie krause and his sister mei mei have come up with some original ideas to help raise money for their Favorite Charity in the past. Their latest scheme, though, was more creative in every sense of the word. Ollie krause we may have to go to more extreme measures for this one. Garvin perfection over punctuality, that, it would appear, is ollie krauses motto. How else to explain why this 14yearolds Birthday Party is coming 6 months after his 14th birthday . Ollie six months isnt very quick, but if you think about what weve done garvin you see, over all that time, ollie, his sister mei mei, and friend andrew have been obsessive about perfecting and building 20 of these, computerdesigned, 3dprinted, compressedairpowered miniature marshmallow launchers. Mei mei krause i think were on schedule, but we still have a lot of guns to make. Garvin all so ollie and a dozen friends can celebrate his belated birthday with an elaborate game of capture the flag. Ollie yeah, i mean, who doesnt wanna, like, shoot their friends with marshmallows . Its pretty great. Ollie team red can be here. Team black is gonna be over there. Garvin what is truly great though is that the one young person who will get the most out of this day isnt even here. His name is frank, and he lives 9,000 miles away in uganda. Ollie we are going to focus a good amount of the funds to go to frank. Judi haven gentry thats the kinda kids they are. Garvin ollie and mei mei learned about frank from their 80yearold berkeley neighbor judi haven gentry. Seven years ago, judi started her own small nonprofit helping orphans in uganda. And ever since learning about it, ollie and mei mei have been getting creative about ways to help raise money. Ollie got you, zion. Garvin thats why in lieu of presents, ollie and mei mei are asking guests at their marshmallow war to make donations so they can pay franks way to a boarding school. It will mean a lot to a boy half a world away. Judi yeah. Garvin as well as a neighbor two doors down. Judi it does, it touches me. Mei mei well, its really nice to get his thank you notes and stuff, to know that we actually made a difference in his life. Ollie and its, like, you really see, like, the magnitude of the effect of what youve done and how life changing it is. Garvin which ollie believes is way more important than a Birthday Party anywhere near his birthday. Ollie thats awesome. Garvin coming up on this bay area proud special, from client to coworker, how a bay area ceo reunited with a young man he once treated for autism. Seeing each other for more than a decade. But its about so much more, more, like the validation of one mans life work. Female and then were gonna look at stats, so thats ourselves, right . Garvin these are busy times at the center for social dynamics. Female now, you know, at this point garvin trainings for new staff held in new offices are signs of an evergrowing demand for their therapy and support for children with autism and their family. Pete pallares can we talk about the projections, maybe the employees . Garvin for ceo pete pallares, it means a lot of time spent planning for the future. Though, not all that long ago, pete was reminded of his past. Pete recently, i recently moved, so an old box came out of the basement. Garvin pictures were in that box from 15 years ago, the beginning of petes career working with children with autism. Among them, pictures of one of petes very first clients, 3yearold jack clark. Pete jack was a nonverbal kid. He wasnt talking, and he had a hard time interacting with other children, with adults. Garvin pete and jack worked together successfully for a few years. Pete jack said his first words with us. Garvin until parting ways completely as pete said ethics require. Pete its probably the hardest part of our jobs in here, when you detach, when youre here to do a certain type of work for a year or for 2, and then you move on. Garvin pete says he often wondered about what became of jack, and if jack ever thought about him. Well jack clark yeah garvin that is just what we asked jack. Jack i thought about pete in 2001, and 02, and 03, and 04 garvin you see, out of the blue, 3 months ago, jacks family reached out to pete. Male can we see how many we have in the library . Jack yeah, of course. Garvin and pete, seeing just how far this now 18yearold had come, offered him a job. Pete fifteen years later, and now a nice young adult with tremendous skills, a charming guy. Pete so, again, things to do for pete. Garvin jack now organizes and files for csd jack work on a clinical two garvin and helps pete keep his personal calendar. Pete number three garvin its fun having his old friend around, pete says, but its also more. Its validation for his chosen line of work. Pete as a therapist, you always leave with that doubt, did i give everything here . Could have he learned more doing Something Else . Garvin at least, when looking back on jack case, pete no longer has to wonder. From client to coworker seems proof enough of a job well done.
