Democratic senator al franken speaking out this morning after a flood of his colleagues, including all but three of the 16 Democratic Women in the senate, calling for him to step down. What was the Tipping Point for you on your colleague senator franken . Well, obviously there were new allegations today and enough is enough. Reporter on wednesday, a woman identified as a former Democratic Congressional aide told politico franken tried to forcibly kiss her back before he was a senator telling her at the time its my right as an entertainer. Franken called the allegation categorically not true and preposterous a week after acknowledging i am embarrassed, i feel ashamed. After radio host Leanne Tweeden shared this photo from a 2006 uso trip to afghanistan where she says franken forcibly kissed her. It happened so fast and he just mashed his lips against my face. Reporter since then, at least six other women have come forward with allegations against franken. Coming to frankens defense late wednesday, an unlikely ally, newt gingrich. Also this morning, there is new fallout over President Trumps recognition of jerusalem as israels capital the move sparked outrage even before wednesdays official announcement and the chorus of critics grew louder overnight. Nbcs chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel has more on all of that. Hey, richard. Reporter good morning. As you can probably see, clashes and civil unrest have broken out here in the west bank. We are on the outskirts of the palestinian city of ramallah. These protesters have begun setting fires, theyre burning tires to create a smokescreen and they are throwing stones and other debris, its difficult to see, but behind this smoke are israeli troops and they have been firing volleys of tear gas occasionally to drive the demonstrators back. All these protestors say they are here for one reason because palestinians, they say, will not give up on their right to jerusalem no matter what President Trump says. In a day of rage, palestinians in the west bank and gaza strip expressed their outrage, frustration, and sense of betrayal by the United States. Demonstrations quickly led to clashes with israeli troops, anger boiling over. Palestinians had been promised for years an intin internationa negotiations that jerusalems final status would be settled through diplomacy only to see President Trump reverse decades of u. S. Policy and recognize israels claim that the city is its capital. I have determined that it is time to officially recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. Reporter after he said that, palestinians switched off the lights on the Christmas Tree in bethlehems manger square. This morning, more passive resistance. Palestinians closed their shops across jerusalem in a general strike. Were here today condemning the american president Donald Trumps decision by declaring jerusalem as the state of israel. Reporter a profound shift appears to be underway. Nearly 25 years ago, president clinton brought israeli and palestinian leaders together for the oslo accords, with the u. S. As moderator in chief. Now, many palestinians say that Peace Process is over, that President Trump killed it when his administration took sides on the most fundsmental and emotional division in the region, the status of jerusalem. Israel is on high alert, Security Officials warn violence could escalate but say they can handle whatever comes next. Israelis say the Peace Process wasnt working anyway. Where there is no peace that doesnt include jerusalem as the capital of the state of israel. Reporter israelis thanked President Trump for accepting their historic claim to jerusalem despite warnings from across European Union and from some of washingtons closest allies that the move puts peace in the middle east at risk. The clashes here dont seem to be letting up. If anything they are intensifying. More people arriving, they are bringing in more stones and its not just here. There are several locations in the west bank that look just like this right now. Its the most the Largest Scale violence weve seen in this part of the west bank in several years. Back to you. All right, richard, stay safe there. Absolutely, richard. We move to capitol hill now where donald trump jr. Has faced new questions in the russia investigation and his responses are drawing some criticism. Nbc National Correspondent Peter Alexander with that story. Hi, peter, good morning. Hey, savannah, good morning to you. The president s son donald trump jr. Is refusing to share with house investigators the details of a phone conversation with his father last summer about that 2016 meeting with a russian lawyer. Trump jr. Says the call they had is protected under Attorney Client privilege. Of course, neither the president nor his son is a lawyer, and a top democrat isnt buying that explanation. Donald trump jr. Facing growing questions from house investigators behind closed doors for more than eight hours wednesday. According to a source with knowledge of his testimony, the president s eldest son told the House Intelligence Committee the day that 2016 trump tower meeting wimeet when the russian lawyer became public trump jr. Didnt speak to his father but to his fathers aide hope hicks who the younger trump says relayed his comments to the president as they traveled back from germany aboard air force one. On that flight, the president personally dictated what would be trump jr. s misleading public explanation, dismissing the meeting, but the next day trump jr. Says he spoke with his father and lawyers. Democrats say he wouldnt elaborate. He acknowledged discussing that matter with his father but refused to answer questions about that discussion on the basis of a claim of Attorney Client privilege. In my view, there is no Attorney Client privilege that protects a discussion between father and son. Reporter also this morning, former National Security adviser michael flynn, already under indictment, now under more scrutiny. An unidentified whistleblower whos provided an account to Congressional Democrats says just 11 minutes into Donald Trumps presidency, even as his boss was still addressing the nation its going to be only america first. America first. Reporter flynn was tending to his own financial interests, texting a former Business Partner saying an ambitious u. S. Collaboration with russia to build Nuclear Reactors in the middle east was good to go. As detailed in this new letter from the House Oversight committees top democrat Elijah Cummings to the republican chairman, flynns former partner told the whistleblower that flynn was making sure u. S. Sanctions on russia would be ripped up once trump was in the white house, allowing that Nuclear Project that flynn once participated in to move forward. A possible economic incentive for the president s powerful aide. Cummings writes these Grave Allegations compel a full, credible, and bipartisan congressional investigation. And neither Michael Flynns attorney nor his former Business Partner has responded to nbc newss request for comment. Meanwhile, here at the white house, there was a moment at the end of the president s speech yesterday on jerusalem that caught a lot of peoples attention. This is where the president appeared to slur his words. Take a look. Let us rethink old assumptions and open our hearts and minds to possible and possibilities. And finally i ask the leaders of the region, political and religious, israeli and palestinian, jewish and christian and muslim to join us in the noble quest for lasting peace. Thank you. God bless you, god bless israel, god bless the palestinians and god bless the United States. Thank you very much. Reporter online observers speculated it might have been an issue with dentures or a health issue. One white house official i spoke to dismissed the episode. They told me the president was simply parched. A white house spokesperson later echoed that, telling the Los Angeles Times his throat was dry, theres nothing to it. The times pressed that spoke person, whether the slurred words might indicate health concerns. The spokesperson added i know what youre getting at, im saying theres nothing to it. Savannah, hoda . Welcome back, everybody. A new study in the new england journal of medicine is getting a lot of attention this morning. It explores a link between certain kinds of Birth Control and Breast Cancer. Dr. Jessica shepherd is an obgyn. Were talking about hormonal contraceptives. This study came out of denmark, drawing a link between people on Birth Control and Breast Cancer. What is the greater risk if youre on Birth Control . What they were looking at particularly in this study is women who were on Birth Control currently or had a previous use of it, looking at women under the age of 50, what their risic risk is. There is a 20 increased risk of having Breast Cancer associated with oral contraceptive use. 20 . 20 . Thats significant. The headline is jarring. Lets pretend i am on Birth Control. Do you suggest you say, okay, lets get off of that . Whats the suggestion . Birth control really the study and that number is something we have seen in previous studies. The real link is really, again, the age that you start, the duration. They looked at duration. Women who had been on it for ten years or more, is the risk increased . Five years or more, even after they stopped taking the pill. There is a lot that goes into it. Birth control, 38 million women in the u. S. Use Birth Control. 25 of those is going to be oral contraceptives. What i found interesting, ten years ago, i was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and the doctors asked me two questions. Was one, did your mom or an aunt or close relative have Breast Cancer, which was i guess about genetics. And the other question they asked me is are you on Birth Control . When i saw the study, i said, wait, were they thinking about it ten years ago . I think the estrogen component of Birth Control pills we know it has some predominance of Breast Cancer formation. But what is the number . What is the statistic and what is the risk . It is having an important talk with your doctor about that. Is your take away for a women watching who is a little scared is to not stop taking the Birth Control. Make sure they have the discussion with their doctor. Also look at alternative it is. The implant in the arm, the i. E. Ied and also a shot in your arm. Thank you. Appreciate it. Lets go to mr. Roker for a check of the weather. Thanks, hoda. This is along the frontal system. Lots of wet weather, especially through texas. Look whats going on right now in western texas. Weve got some snow to talk about. Theyre going to be looking at snow out there. It is kind of interesting, right along the jet stream, were going to see snow and sleet in west texas, rain along the gulf. This is going to hang around into the middle part of the weekend. Look at that, all along the system, were going to be seeing wet weather. Could even see some snow in the midatlantic states. Itll be light but not something were going to ignore. Heavier rainmaki making its way through saturday, the outer banks, through parts of central and southern georgia. Look at the snow, three to six inches. Some areas as much as eight thats whats going on around the country. Here whats happening in your neck of the woods. Good morning. As we look at our temperatures for San Francisco over the next few days, cool mornings and mild afternoons. This kind of weather continues. In fact, it will be warmer than normal for this time in december. Reaching up to 66 degrees tomorrow. Then a touch cooler for the weekend, with some breezy winds. Inland areas continue on with some upper 60s. And during the morning hours, well still see those temperatures dropping back into the upper 30s and low 40s and more of the dry weather into next week. Thats whats going on around the country. Now back to you guys. Wow, al. Sometimes i wish there was a camera on the commercia sometimes i wish there was a camera on the commercial breaks here. This is us star Justin Hartley says having coffee with his daughter. She doesnt drink coffee, of course, but they like to sit and talk. And that got us thinking nice. Its time to go. I have the same alarm, but it depends on the day. Sometimes 3 00, sometimes 3 30, sometimes 4 00. Thats insane. It depends. Does anyone have a morning shortcut they swear by . A shortcut . Something that makes the morning go faster. What do you do . I know what als going to say. I make my wife breakfast in bed. I present her with a rose and three different papers, feed the homeless, go to church. Enough about you, casanova. I brush my teeth in the shower. Oh, wow. It saves time. [ laughter ] al roker, he thinks why are you so against it . Is it gross . I dont think its gross do you have that little time . Yeah i think it makes sense. There was a special one that just took place in an unexpected place. Nbcs jo ling kent is going to tell us about it. Good morning. This is in Silicon Valley. You dont think of tech giants like google, apple and facebook singing like Pitch Perfectlevel music, but engineers and data scientists at the Biggest Companies in tech took a night off for a showdown at the fifth annual techapella show. Across Silicon Valley, the competition between google, facebook, apple and twitter is reaching a crescendo. Reporter the brightest minds in tech are squaring off, not to code your next social media app, but to bring together the best voices in real life. People think, oh, you just sit around a computer and you code all day, and its like, well, you know, yeah, you might write code as a language, but music is also a language. Sorry, its just kind of claim. Aca excuse me . Theres something about a capella, too, a nerdiness about it, like i love to sing and make these noises with my voice. Got to tune it. Reporter what is the ambiance when all of these Tech Companies get up on stage and sing their hearts out . Super cheesy. That is the ambiance. We fully embrace it. I dont think anyones getting up on stage thinking that were going to get a record deal out of any of this. Reporter even so, for many of these harddriving professionals, a capella provides a welcome key change from the daily grind. Dont give up, no, no, no if its all about how much money you can make, its all about how hard you can work, you start to lose that sense of connection with your community, with other people. A capella grounds people and it brings them together. Theres just so many creative people in Silicon Valley and so many people who have all of these hidden skills, which maybe they never get to use at their job. Im so glad that all these people came here today to help us spread the joy for at least a couple hours. Reporter hitting just the right note to find oldfashioned harmony in a digital world. One of the cool things if youre in a pop act right now is this jingle ball this is an nbc news special report. Heres kate snow. Good morning, everyone. Were coming on air with remarks from democratic senator al franken. Lets listen to what he said. I was excited for that conversation and hopeful that it would result in real change that made life better for women all across the country and in every part of our society. And then the conversation turned to me. Over the last few weeks, a number of women have come forward to talk about how they felt my actions had affected them. I was shocked. I was upset. But in responding to their claims i also wanted to be respectful of that broader conversation. Because all Women Deserve to be heard and their experiences taken seriously. I think that was the right thing to do. I also think it gave some people the false impression that i was admitting to doing things that in fact i havent done. Some of the allegations against me are simply not true. Others i remember very differently. I said at the outset that the Ethics Committee was the right venue for these allegations to be heard and investigated and evaluated on their merits. That i was prepared to cooperate fully and i was confident in the outcome. You know, an important part of the conversation we have been having the last few months has been about how men abuse their power and privilege to hurt women. Im proud that during my time in the senate i have used my power to be a champion of women. And that i have earned a reputation as someone who respects the women i work alongside every day. I know theres been a very different picture of me painted over the last few weeks but i know who i really am. Serving in the United States senate has been a great honor of my life. I know in my heart that nothing that i have done as a senator, nothing, has brought this honor on this institution. And im confident that the Ethics Committee would agree. Nevertheless today i am announcing that in the coming weeks i will be resigning as a member of the United States senate. I all of people are aware that theres some irony in the fact that i am leaving while a man whos bragged on tape about his history of Sexual Assault sits in the oval office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the senate with a full support of his party. But this decision is not about me. Its about the people of minnesota. Its become clear that i cant both pursue the Ethics Committee process and at the same time remain an effective senator for them. Let me be clear, i may be resigning my seat but im not giving up my voice. I will continue to stand up for the things i believe in as a citizen and as an activist. The minnesotians deserve a senator who can focus with all her energy on addressing the challenges they face every day. Theres a big part of me that will always regret having to walk away from this job with so much work left to be done. But i have faith that the work will continue because i have faith in the people who have helped me do it. I have faith in the dedicated, funny, selfless, brilliant, young men and women on my staff. They have so much more to contribute to our country and i hope that as disappointed they may feel today every one who has worked for me knows how much i admire and respect them. I have faith in my colleagues, especially my senior senator amy klobuchar. I wouldnt have been able to do this job without her guidance and wisdom. And i have faith, or at least hope, that members of senate will find the political courage necessary to keep asking the tough questions, hold this Administration Accountable and stand up for the truth. I have faith in the activists who organized to help me win my first campaign. And who have kept on organizing to help fight for the people who needed us. Kids facing bullying. Seniors worried about the price of prescription drugs. Native americans. Who have been overlooked for far too long. Working people who have been taking it on the chin for a generation, everyone in the middle class and everyone aspiring to join it. I have faith in the proud legacy of Progressive Advocacy that i have had a privilege to be a part of it. I think i probably repeated these words 10,000 words over the years. Paul wellstones famous quote, the future belongs to those who are passionate and work hard. Its still true. It will always be true. And most of all, i have faith in minnesota. A big part of this job is going around the state and listening to what people need from washington but more often than not, when im home, im blown away by how much minnesota has to offer the entire country and the entire world. The people i have had the honor of representing are brilliant and creative and hardworking and whoever holds this seat next will inherent heart a half years, being as good as the people you serve. This has been a tough few weeks for me, but i am a very, very lucky man. I have a beautiful, Healthy Family that i love and that loves me very much. Im going to be just fine. Id just like to end with one last thing. I did not grow up wanting to be a politician. I came to this relatively late in life. I had to learn a lot on the fly. It wasnt easy and it wasnt always fun. Im not just talking about today. This is a hard thing to do with your life. There are a lot of long hours and late nights and hard lessons and there is no guarantee that all your work and sacrifice will ever pay off. I won my first election by 312 votes. Could have easily gone the other way. And even when you win, progress is far from inevitable. Paul wellstone spent his whole life working for Mental Health parity and it didnt pass until six years after paul died. This year a lot of people who didnt grow up imagining that theyd ever get involved in politics have done just that. Theyve gone to their first protest march or made their first call to a member of congress or maybe even taken the leap and put their names on a ballot for the first time. It can be such a rush to look around a room full of people ready to fight alongside you. To feel that energy, to imagine that Better Things are possible. You too will experience setbacks and defeats and disappointments. There will be days when you wonder whether its worth it. What i want you to know is that even today, even on the worst day of my political life, i feel
