One of them is right behind me. You can see it smoldering. It once was a very large apartment complex called the hawaiian village. What were seeing now is thousands of people evacuate. In fact, 27,000 people have already left the area. Reporter overnight a fastmoving wildfire going through california. The flames spreading quickly driven by powerful santa ana winds, including gusts near 60 Miles Per Hour. The inferno forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. Several hundred are under a mandatory evacuation order. We can see the flames burning towards us, so were going to grab the kids and all our stuff, and i dont know where were going to go. Students at Thomas Aquinas college were also evacuated. A number of buildings have already been destroyed. The fire causing widespread power outages. Nearly a quarter of a Million People in the area now without electricity. More than 500 firefighters working through the night trying to beat back the thomas fire. Really all the firefighters can do in winds like this is to get out ahead, evacuate people, and protect structures. In october california suffered its deadliest and most destructive wildfire ever, claiming at least 43 lives. This morning officials are not taking any chances, telling residents to get out while they can. You must abide by these evacuation notices. We saw the disasters and the losses that happened up north in sonoma, and this is a fast, very dangerous moving fire. As more than 500 firefighters fight this blaze, there is zero percent containment right now. What that means is soon firefighters are going up into the air, getting into choppers to fight this fire from above as they try to figure out how to contain it, but the air very much smells and tastes of ash and smoke as families try to figure out where they go next. On monday the Court Allowed full enforcement of the president s travel ban against residents of six mostly muslim countries. Justice correspondent Pete Williams is at the Supreme Court with more. Pete, good morning. Tell us about the courts ruling. What did they find . Right. It means the administration can now completely enforce the travel ban. Its been on the books the past two months. This is the one that bans or limits travel to the u. S. From chad, iran, libya, somalia, syria, and yemen. Also north korea and some groups in venezuela. Its been only partially enforced since it was announced in late september because its lawsuits. Lower courts said that while a legal challenge is underway, people overseas who have close relatives in the u. S. Would be exempt, but now the Supreme Court has done away with that exemption. That allows the ban to be enforced in full. So what does this mean . Where does this case stand right now . Well, these legal challenges are now before two federal appeals courts. The issue is eventually on its way back here. On monday just two of the justices, ruth baiter ginsberg and sonja sodamayor said they would keep it in place. Thats a sign that this version of the travel ban may survive the legal challenges, when the case is heard back here, which will probably be early next year. While we have you there, theres another case that the court will hear today regarding samesex marriage and religious freedom. Tell us about it. Right. This is a big case that involves a gay couple from colorado. David mullens and charlie craig. They wanted a cake for their wedding reception, but the baker told them no because gay marriage is against his religious principles. He is jack phillips. He says his cakes are works of art, and that requiring him to bake them for samesex weddings would violate his freedom of speech forcing him to express a view as an artist that he disagrees with. People facing incredible challenges with tenacity and unbreakable spirit. Who better than Jenna Bush Hager to bring us the story. He was in combat on the afghan battlefield when he made a new friend of the fourlegged variety. Little did either of them know that that encounter would change both of their lives forever. He looks like any other happy go lucky dog who enjoys rides in the car, wind in his fur and chasing sticks too big for his own good. But just a few years ago, this was fred in afghanistan. In 2010, Sergeant Greg grocery was gathering intelligence for the most elite fighters in the corps in a remote part of afghanistan. They told us it would be a different kind of fight that the taliban there just had more experience and more to fight for in terms of that area. Craig and his fellow marines were constantly attacked. Would be walking through a Little Village and turn a corner and they were waiting for you. Then one day and in between mortar attacks he spotted a dog with a big goofy head and short legs frolicking all alone without a care in the world. As i got closer, he started to wag his tail. The last thing i expected this dog to do was wag his tail at someone he had never met. He followed craig everywhere. Even on covert night patrols. These guys are quiet and im going to be quiet. And even when other stray dogs would bark at us, he wouldnt bark back and that was incredible. A fellow marine said to craig, looks like youve made a friend. Craig heard looks like a fred. The name stuck. One problem, the marines had a strict no stray dogs policy in afghanistan. Get caught with a stray, and that dogwood be euthanized, no questions asked. But craig said there was Something Different about this dog. And im not the only one that felt that way. Everyone in the field could see it and we knew there were some rules that were meant to be broken. However, the afghan commandos didnt appreciate a dog living in their compound. One day it got so tense that a gun battle almost erupted over fred. Hes always creating drama. Craig realized when he left, he wasnt going alone. Craig smuggled fred into the heavily fortified camp in his duffel bag with the help of some workers and a veterinarian. Fred eventually made it home to craig in the u. S. I never heard a dog gas. I just lay there and let him go crazy and lick my face and that was a really special moment. Being reunited with fred was the great part of coming home for craig, other parts were tougher. While there, he not only sustained a traumatic brain injury, he watched as one of his closest friends was killed by an i. Ied. When he came home, he knew he might be suffering from post Traumatic Stress and nightmares and didnt know how to talk about it. Fred gave him a place to start. What kind of dog is that because hes so different looking and so handsome. Right, buddy . Yeah, it was, it was an opportunity for me to talk about afghanistan. Reporter craig now lives outside portland, maine, with his girlfriend nora and her dog, ruby. And travels the country with fred connecting with others impacted by post Traumatic Stress. Its a painful story but its an important story and the more i share it, the more other people will share theirs. Reporter by getting him out of afghanistan, craig saved freds life. But craig will tell you fred is doing just as much to save his life right back. Oh, big time. Hes still saving me. There are ways that hes impacted my life that im still figuring out. The way life should be and for craig and fred, very possibly the way life was meant to be. Oh, my gosh. Right. Its so beautiful. Well, both of them are heroes and they are incredible. Dogs are incredible. Craig is incredible. He is using his story to help others. I love how he can finally talk about it because people ask him because no one is going to go up to a vet, not many people and ask, what was it like . But its an easy way in. It makes sense. And naomi is detailing those struggles in her new book, river of time. Naomi, good morning. Its good to see you. Thank you for doing this. Some mornings you wake up and theres a big, juicy pimple on your nose. I woke up this morning and i have no choice. Take another little piece of my heart now baby naomi, you have found your voice in this book. And you are really talking about some difficult years when you fell into a depression. Before we get into it, what made you want to write . What made you want to be so public and spill it out . Savannah, im trying to start a National Conversation about depression and anxiety because i may be one Little Country singer right here. But there are 43 million of us out there. 43 million, who suffer from depression, anxiety. And i want to let the world know that its not a character flaw. Its a disease, just like you have a disease of the heart. Heart disease. Or you have cancer, which is wherever, cancer of the lungs. And the pancreas, if the pancreas doesnt make enough insulin, you have to inject insulin into the body to get rid of sugar. They dont make enough of the good neurochemicals in the brain. We dont make enough of the good chemicals in the brain. Its a disease. It is not it has nothing to do with our character. And as you write in the book, it kind of seemed to come out of nowhere, in 2011. As i understand, you had finished up your tour with wynonna. And suddenly, one day, you woke up and everything changed. What happened . It happens with a lot of people. Sometimes people dont realize, they have depression. If you go to my book, its like a survivors manual how to survive depression and anxiety. But i realized i wasnt just sadness, like if you have the loss of someone, the loss of a pet, the loss of a job, whatever. You can go into a temporary depression. But this lasted forever. I didnt get off my couch for two years. You were afraid . Well, i was so depressed that i couldnt move. I wouldnt even brush my teeth. I couldnt get out of my pjs. My husband and my girlfriends, of course, would come over. And i would just go upstairs and lock the door in my bedroom. Or they would come to the driveway and i would lock the door and look at them. You become immobilized. And my psychiatrist, i finally listened to ashley and wynonna and larry, my husband, and realized, i needed professional help. I was dangerously depressed. You talk in the book about thinking about, wanting, to commit suicide. Yep. Thats how bad it can get. You get down in this its hard to describe because you get down in this deep, dark hole of depression and you really dont think theres another minute. Its so horrific. You cant even think about another day. But i got so bad, that finally, larry actually called 911 in the middle of the night and they took me in. And thats when all of the therapy started. One of the things that happens with depression is, throughout our life and ive had a lot of tragedies. And i talk about that in the book. But you just keep squelching it down. And if you dont deal with it, it starts coming out sideways. And the book really chronicles the genesis of this and what may have triggered it and your efforts to rise to hope, which you do. It happened in a little more than 12 hours. Thousands of city workers are preparing to walk off the jobs. We saw picketers downtown. Talks are on new contracts, at impasse. The union is talking about an indefinite strike. The mayor calls this move illegal and promising to file a formal complaint, forcing workers back to their job. You snap off the stem. And spray paint it silver or whatever color you want. And get a plastic cone from the dollar store. And spray paint it to match. And you hot glue the spoon heads. You have to love the hot glue gun. Popsicle sticks. Theyre easy to get. The hot glue gun will be the key. You can trim these down to shorter sizes. Make whatever snowflake design you want. Cute patterns. And you spray paint it whatever you want. You can hang it on the door. Jazz up the house a little bit. Black and white cookies, my favorite. Its the tray were looking at. If you have mismatched holiday plates. At the dollar store, you get a couple mismatched plates to stick together. You hot glue, again, my favorite. You hot glue the base of the candle stick bases. That forms the layers. And that makes the flatter. You can make a fancy tier. It looks intentionally funky. Right. This, i love. The pool noodle. This is fun for outdoors. You take a standard pool noodle. You take strips of white tape. We got it started here. You just lay it like this. And you just kind of roll it. Even easier than i thought. You roll it. And when youre done, you bend it. What do you do to keep it down . You get someone to hold it for you. Do some fishing line around. We have them all set up. You can hang them on your door. Stick them outside on the front of the house. If you live in warm weather, you can float in the pool. This is adorabldorable. How did did you do this . Everyone has exercise balls around. You still want to eat good food that has flavor. What are you making . Were going to make a skirt steak dish. And skirt steak is a good beef to use. Its better for you than a bigger cut. Has less fat but is very beefy. And it costs a little bit less. But its delicious. Were going to make a tomato relish. Think about it this way, hoda. It is all of the ingredients of a bloody mary without the vodka. Were going to start with the dressing. Lemon juice. Red wine vinegar, worcestershire. And a little bit of celery. A lot of times we throw out the leaves. Save them. They have a fantastic flavor. It gives it a nice brightness. Were going to chop up the celery leaves here. And put in some of the ingredients. This time of the year, cherry tomatoes are nice and tweet. Red onions and hol pain ojalape. We have our spices here. You can use your favorite spice rub. Spices will bring lots of flavor without bringing extra fat. When its raw, you rub that stuff on . Yes. Let it sit for 30 minutes. This is the skirt steak. Look at that. This is what you want to see. See how nice and crusty that is . The space will create flavor and also a nice crust on the outside. All right. You can see the grain is going this way. You want to go against the grain. That will make it nice and tender. You see how beautiful this is . Yes. This is like an infomercial. I love this. For 19. 99, its all yours. We put the tomato relish on top. Lots of flavor. You take a couple of chopsticks. And the chopsticks keeps the potato incontact. And you go all the way through. Like these. Exactly. We put this in the oven for 45 minutes until the sweet potato roasts through. And i make a mixture of butter and maple syrup. What is that . Chipotle. I dont know what that is. Its fantastic. Its like a smoked jalapeno. After they come out of the oven, you glaze them with this maple and chili glaze. And put it back in the oven for ten more minutes. And there you go. All about fit.
