Theres the back upcoming down the berkeley curve. Its more significant than we see. The good news is the transition off 880 moves smoothly. These folks are headed toward cash lane 14. That may be the issue if that is your route. The slowing on the berkeley curve, you are about a half hour. 30 minutes from highway 4 to the toll plaza. Thank you. We continue to follow breaking news out of Southern California. Take a look at the pictures from overnight. This is from the thomas fire. It broke out about 6 00. Burning through so many structures. 150 structures destroyed. Crews are continuing to battle the flames. We want to take a look at the overview of where the fires are burning. Again, those strong winds, the santa ana winds are spreading. The fires expected to spread as they continue to evacuate. Right now, we want to take a look at the fire. As you can see, it started in santa paula and ohi on the border there. Since then, it burns into fillmore and ventura. We want to listen into our nbc cyst irstation right now. Hes been there all morning long. Also on the Ventura Thomas fire. Several hours since the fire evacuated them. Only time to grab a few things, family members, pets. As you have been moving throughout the area, near high point drive and foothill. This is where several homes are burning. As we speak, rick, what can you tell us . Reporter good morning. I was dispatched out here last night about 8 00, getting out to where the fire started. Of course everybody feared the fire would spread. Of course you can see behind us, it has done just that. This is a home on the next block over that has just erupted in flames in the last 2030 minutes or so. We have seen this growing. The hillside also burning next to it. This is the unfortunate tragedy of all of this, these fires are spreading. They are burning home after home in this area. We want to show you up here, you can see where some of these other homes have burned as well. This house here, we didnt realize it was someones property until we noticed that Chimney Stack standing. Thats the only thing Still Standing right now. Everything else burned to the ground. The homes here, on fire. Several homes on fire on this street on high point road, just north of foothill. You can see the flames are whipping, the trees are blowing and i can tell you, these wind gusts have really felt like they kicked up, pretty strongly in the last half hour, i would say, that we have been out here, noticing these conditions changing, still stronger winds. Video i want to go to and show you other homes burning in this area, burning throughout the city that we spotted overnight just hours after the Evacuation Order was sent out to these homeowners. So, of course, this is why it is so important to get out right away. We saw several homes burning in different areas of town and i believe we have another video clip to show you of an Apartment Building we were in front of in our last couple of reports. This morning, a huge apartment complex, the Hawaiian Village apartments burned down to the ground. We could only see just the foundation, essentially of that massive building. As we come out here live, its unfortunate to have to show this, these homes burning out here. You know, these are peoples worst nightmares that these homes are burning. Firefighters are working as quickly as they possibly can to try to get these fires out, but, as we were talking a few minutes ago about this, they have a hard time doing this because they are being sent from one place to the next. They are trying to prioritize what they are responding to. Sometimes they will show up, they were here in front of this house a few minutes ago spraying water, but they had to leave to another high priority radio call to get to throughout the city. The crews, police, fire, sheriffs department, all these agencies from across Southern California are staying busy this morning. Unfortunately, for a lot of homeowners, bad news that a lot of homes have been lost so far in this thomas fire. We are keeping an eye on things. Well have updates throughout the morning. For now, back to you in the studio. Rick, we have been talking about the we will continue to follow behind the scenes what is going on in Southern California this morning. As we come out live to kari, talking about the santa ana winds, is this not reminiscent of what we went through with the north bay fire . It is. As he talked about the conditions changing minute by minute because of the strong wind gusts. With those santa ana winds, it funnels the winds over the mountains, through the valleys and we have three wildfires we are watching in Southern California. You can see those locations there, wind speeds over 70 miles per hour. As we look at this, this is the drought monitor. It highlights those areas where we have had very dry conditions. As we look at the l. A. County area, ventura, they are still in a moderate drought in those areas shaded in tan. As we look closer at the bay area, we have had enough rain to be taken out of the drought status. Its not as dry here and its also not as windy. As we look at the wind speed forecast throughout the day, it is going to stay strong. Winds coming in and going offshore. Thats going to keep it dry, windy even into this evening. Senior centers and libraries. No parking enforcement. No street sweeping, no crime or traffic reports. Police officers and firefighters will remain on the job. It is 6 09. Happening today, a supervisor will push for a commercial rent tax. The supervisor is going to propose a june 2018 ballot measure and increase rents in the city and raise almost 100 million every year. Then drive up to san jose and its 49 degrees. Then 53 degrees in san francisco. So, a big spread in temperatures, but then we close that gap today. Warming up all around the bay area. The south bay up to 65 degrees in gilroy. 65 in danville and oakland, 61 degrees. 63 in redwood city. San francisco, a high of 62 degrees on the embarcadero and the north bay, up to 65 in navato. Sonoma, 63 degrees. As you head out for that commute this morning in the east bay, only in the mid40s. Nice, warm jacket or sweater needed. Hot coffee, too, to keep you warm. Warming to the low 60s. We have been talking about the king tides. This is when we have a big difference from the very high tide to the extremely low tide. It comes up to our high tide today, almost to seven feet by late morning. 11 06 is when we will reach the high tides. There may be localized flooding for the low lying trails and some of the streets. It looks like, for the most part, we will have this as the last day of the king tides. The storm tracks to the north of us through canada. No rain in the forecast all because of this High Pressure keeping it windy and keeping the winds blowing offshore. As we go into the weekend, no rain in the seven day forecast. We will start to see more clouds moving in. Temperatures staying in the 60s for the inland areas. Warm for this time of year, up to 66 degrees this weekend. We head over to mike, two reasons to say, hey, to the south bay. Thats right. Over here toward most of the bay, that looks great. This crash in the trivalley, not really paying much impact on the commute. Well talk about that in a second. Over here, hay, not hey, reports of a bail of hay that fell into the roadway. Chp is addressing that. Farther south, more hay and its scattered across the roadway. There must have been a truck traveling south there. Well track that. So far, it sounds like they are able to handle those things. There may be a quick traffic break to remove that hay. The crash is over to the shoulder. No impact to trivalley or the east bay. Oakland, 61 degrees and 64 for the high today in santa rosa. San francisco will be breezy for the morning as well as the rest of the bay area. Later this evening, it will be calmer. As we head through the forecast, really dry with our high temperatures above normal for this time in december. Ill talk about the weekend forecast, whats ahead, what are you doing . We have the back up off the east shore freeway and west 580. Northbound 880, maintaining a smooth drive until the end. Thats the good news. Over here, we have a crash blocking the fast lane south 680 at north main. In concord, another crash before you get to the 242 merge. The rest of the bay moves smoothly. Im going to talk about the south bay. We have a couple issues coming up. Thank you. 6 32. We continue to follow breaking news out of Southern California. Live pictures from our sister station with the fire burning overhead. The aerial of the creek fire burning near sylmar. Its close to Santa Clarita nerima six flags is. Theres a lot of homes fl. Its burned 1,000 acres and out of control. Thousands of homes have been evacuated and medical facility completely destroyed by flames. The good news is they evacuated in time. We know 37,000 people have been evacuated so far. Look at the collapse. Terrible. We have been watching this as the fire exploded in acreage. Its burned more than 31,000 acres. 27,000 people have been forced out of their homes. This started near santa paula. Since then, it went to ventura. The Ventura County says the fire we saw burned through santa rosa. The evacuation notices. We saw the disaster and losses that happened up north in sonoma. A fast, very dangerous moving fire. So far, firefighters have only been able to send up one drop. They are waiting for first light to send up more aircraft. One of the dangers are the santa ana winds so send the smoke into the air as well. It can make it tough to launch the helicopters. We have crews from the bay area headed to the scene to assist. Say the Head Start Program out of this church behind me on broadway and oakland will not be happening today. It is important to know, police and Fire Services would be resuming because of a huge Public Safety issue. More than 3,000 workers with unions including fbiu, local 1012 and the professional of tech nickal engineers. Oakland mayor says the strike would be unlawful because negotiations are not at a total impas impasse. Shes promising to file to keep them on the job. We have asked the unions to put off the strike until we have the opportunity to bring their last offer to the city council. The soonest that we were legally able to schedule a closed session was wednesday at 1 00. Reporter the unions did say the they would postpone with the understanding both sides would continue to negotiate. Take a look at the services that would be canceled today. No city council meetings. Senior centers, libraries, rec centers. If you are driving into oakland, keep in mind, there would be no parking enforcement. Fire and police would be resuming normal operations. This morning, one person is in custody. Investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. Its a story we brought you last night at 6 00. It is close to the ikea there in emeryville. Two people were critically injured. One of the victims was found near a Dodge Durango riddled with bullets. A second victim was able to escape to the Home Depot Store nearby where someone called for help. Holiday shoppers were terrified. All of a sudden, you hear pop, pop, pop, then another pop, pop or another round. Everyone started running into target. That target was locked down for 20 minutes. Happening today, the issue of fluoride goes back before leaders in santa clara county. A supervisor says shell talk about her recommendation to add fluoride to well water. It will strengthen your teeth and many add it to your water supply. Opponents worry about added chemicals into the water. 6 37. Hundreds of parents showed up to keep their neighborhood schools open. Its a story we have been covering since september. 600 parents, teachers and staff packed into a gym. The School District says they expect to close 35 schools for financial reasons. A sharp drop in enrollment meant 50 million in lost revenue over four years. The superintendent blames the high cost of living in san jose. S from. We see the majority of students have left the area. All these children want is structure. People are understandably very concerned. Here is a map of the Elementary Schools on the chopping block. A decision is expected in late february. Happening today, a plan aimed at making a muni line safer. The transit board could approve plans to add concrete boarding islands. They say the addition would make the line safer for passengers. Area Business Owners say the added barriers will make driving and parking difficult. Good news now. No delays for the muni system. The other transit agencies, bart and cal trains moving well. The Speed Sensors look not too bad for a traffic tuesday. North 101, we have a crash at highway 87, under the overpass. It just got to the shoulder. We see a distraction. 87 past the airport is an issue as well. The two bails of hay or multiple bails of hay have been cleared from 880 and 17. Thats good news. The truck responsible has been found and pulled over. Indeed, it was headed south as we tracked on chp reports. The approach to the bay bridge and the san mateo bridge where there was a high wind advisory. Traffic is steady, but slower right now. Didnt see red there. Looking ahead to the weekend weather. Here is another. In sylmar, this is Santa Clarita, close to Magic Mountain where there are a lot of homes on the hillside. These are live pictures from our sister station of the fire burning out of control. Its burned about 1,000 acres so far. Hundreds of people have been evacuated. Very tough fire fight. Nbc bay area is sending a ground crew to help cover this for you as our sister station in Southern California has been doing a great job covering this. We are sofa familiar with whats going on. Bay area Fire Departments are heading there to help with the fire fight. Kris sanchez is live with more. Its too familiar for them. Reporter when they hit the road, they are going to find very haunting conditions, very similar to what many of them saw in the north bay wildfires, not very long ago. We havent had time for those memories to fade. We do know that there is video of Alameda County gathering themselves together, getting ready to deploy with the other members of strike team 2870 c. That includes fremont, hayward, o oakland. They are all part of that team. Both the city and county are sending resources as well as santa clara. They are gathering in gilroy as we speak. They should be hitting the road in a short amount of time. The thomas fire, as you have been reporting, starting basically in the middle of the night like the north bay wildfires. The wind is whipping it out of control. It is likely when the bay area firefighters get there, they will have to deal with evacuations before they can start with the fire fight. That was one of the complications we saw in the north bay as well. The firefighters couldnt fight the fire. They had to help people get out. As you mentioned, 27,000 people out of their homes and other Evacuation Orders seem to be coming down the pipe as well. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thank you so much for that update there. Happening today, we are expected to get details in the possible lawsuit against the palo alto schools. They report the school board broke the law by not giving notice they had a closed session meeting to talk about the suit. Today, members have to correct the mistake and make that information public. Potential lawsuit comes from the family of a student who says she was sexually assaulted on campus back in 2015. That family claims School Leaders did not properly handle the report. The district is facing legal action from the family of another student with similar claims. President trumps former Campaign Manager in more trouble this morning. Scott mcgrew, Paul Manafort is already facing serious charges. Very serious. Good morning. He was under house arrest, marcus, the ankle monitor and everything. He walks out and special prosecutor mueller said that would be okay. Manafort broke one of the courts rules. The prosecution alleged the former trump Campaign Manager worked in secret with another man to write a news paper oped piece defending his actions in ukraine, where he worked as a political adviser. That would violate the judges gag order, dont talk about the charges or the trial. Worse, according to mueller, the writing partner is connected to russias spy agency. Just in this morning, bloom bbe reports they are looking for the personal financial records. The company owes the bank more than 100 million. What we dont know is what mueller is looking for. Specifically, anyway. The important part is the investigation is moved into President Trumps personal finances. The Republican National committee resumed some of the Financial Support for roy moore after the president outwardly endorsed him yesterday, go get em, roy, he said. Roy accused of sexual contact with teenage girls. Moores spokesperson was on cnn reminding the world there are women in alabama who have not claimed moore molested them. Poppy, we need to make it clear, theres a group of nonaccusers who have not accused him of misconduct or anything illegal. It is going to be gusty through the next several hours. Look how cold it is on the right side of the screen. The trivalley, 45 degrees. In the middle of the screen, peninsula looking at palo alto at 50 degrees and 50 in san francisco. Beautiful sunrise over the north bay where it is dropped to 39 degrees. Then, as we look at the high temperatures today, it warms up nicely with highs and low to mid60s. Seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen showing more dry weather over the next few days.
