According to chp this happened around 5 00 a. M. Saturday morning. The driver of the rented box truck hit several cars, then the toll booth, destroying it in the process. The attendant was killed as a result. The attendance, si si han worked for caltrans more than a decade. They could face charges for driving under the influence as well as vehicular manslaughter. This back up can be seen all the way to the east bay. Now, as far as the traffic conditions, typical for your monday morning commute. You can tell already, we have a wide range in temperatures. Not only that, gusty winds, with advisories in effect for the areas shaded in brown. Today, the winds could peek up to 55 Miles Per Hour, especially in the north bay and east bay hills. We may have downed trees. There may be power into this evening. Winds continue to gust in from the north and we will see that through tomorrow morning as well. So, a look at the temperature for today and what else is in store for the week. Thats coming up in a few minutes. 5 03 right now. New this morning, oak larnd police are investigating a deadly hit and run crash. It happened at 2 00 this morning. So far, police are providing a few details. We do know that the car crash near a walgreen store at 82nd and international, one person is confirmed dead. They have not said if a pedestrian was hit or who is the victim. Happening today in san jose, talks begin about closing eight schools because of declining enrollment. This is a story today in the bay investigated back in september. Today in the bay is live in san jose with what it could mean for thousands of students. We know this is a difficult issue for families. Thats right, kris. A tough issue for parents this morning to think about. Now, most of these schools are located around here in south san jose near highway 85 and highway 101. If you would like to speak out on this issue, the San Jose Unified School district will take Public Comments tonight at 5 30. The closures may be necessary due to lower enrollment. At some schools in south san jose and regions of san jose. The school is on the list for possible closure, include minor, anderson, baldwin, frost, and santa teresa. Despite growing, theres limited housing growth for families of children. Thats affecting enrollment in 2016. There were 30,000 students in the district by 2023, they are expecting a drop in enrollment by 12 . The district will hold a public hearing at 5 30 here at the intermediate school. Back here at home, San Francisco city workers removed the candlelight memorial set up after the verdict of the kate steinle murder case. A group of White Supremacists put up signs following the acquittal. The examiner reports steinles family requested the memorial be removed and that happened on saturday. 5 09. In a follow up, San Francisco transit leaders will take the first steps looking into taking private vehicles off market street. This means only taxis, delivery and emergency vehicles will be allowed on market street. A concrete plan is years away. An Environmental Review should be out in a year or so. Those temperatures drop off really quickly. The storm track is still well to the north of us, really unusual to have such dry weather, a strong area of High Pressure in place. As we go through the week, its going to keep the rain away and bring in fairly mild temperatures. The good news is the maze moves well. The approach off 580. The one cash lane will affect the folks over the 880 crossing from the nimitz to the bay bridge toll plaza. It happened saturday morning. You can see the rented box truck speeding to the toll moments before the accident. Several cars, then hit the toll booth, destroying it in the process. The attendance inside was killed as a result. That attendance was 46yearold si si han who works for caltrans more than a decade. The driver is hospitalized with serious injuries and could face charges for driving under the influence as well as vehicular manslaughter. We have the back up and delays saw over the weekend, the crash causing back ups to the east bay. That affected lane is still destroyed. That lane is closed and needs to be rebuilt. We have a wind advisory in effect for the east bay and north bay hills. This is where we could see the winds gusting over 45 Miles Per Hour. All of these areas shaded in brown, where we started to see the hills turning green with dry weather in the forecast. It will be brown again over the next few days. Not only that, the wind speeds throughout the day coming in from the northeast to 25 to 30 Miles Per Hour sustained and higher gusts. It stays windy as we go through the day as well as tomorrow. We will still be waking up with gusty winds tomorrow morning. As we look at the high temperatures today, reaching into the upper 50s, near the coast and San Francisco, low 60s inland. It will get milder as we go through the week. Ill have a look at that and the rest of the microclimate forecast including an update on king tides. 5 33. A judge is expected to decide if there is enough evidence to send two men to trial in connection to the ghost ship fire in oakland. The preliminary hearings are scheduled to begin today. Both men are facing Involuntary Manslaughter charges for the deaths of 36 people in that fire. They pleaded not guilty. Saturday marked one year since the fire. New this morning, a berkeley man faces charges accused of pushing a bart train operator. It happened at the dublinpleasanton station. It happened because the man was threatening to they are banning him from riding bart for a while. The train operator, by the way, is not hurt. An explosive device found in an oakland mailbox. Now police are trying to figure out who put it there. Saturday, a postal carrier discovered a suspicious device in a mailbox. The bomb squad immediately responded. You might remember, there was another reported explosive device mailed to an alameda home on black friday. Officials say they are looking into both incidents. We are not speculating or making connections at this time. We have postal inspectors working those investigations. Evidence was collected at both of those sights to determine exactly what kind of devices those explosives were. An east bay firefighter is recovering after being seriously injured fighting a house fire yesterday. The fire happened at a home on San Pablo Dam road. A resident suffered smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The search continues for the driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in santa rosa. That happened around midnight saturday night on highway 12, east of warm springs road. This is video from the scene. Officers found that victim, along with broken glass and windshield wipers at the scene. Other than that, few clues to go on. The identity of the victim has not been released. Antioch police are looking for suspects in the latest homicide. A man was found shot to death in the middle of a roadway there. Police found that victim around 2 00 in the morning sunday at empire mine road near deer valley road. We have a few details at this point. We are trying to get more, but what we have been able to figure out is officers got a call and when they arrived, the victim was already dead. Happening today, va knee shah launches a program to take a bite out of hundreds of false alarms Police Respond to. Homeowners are advised to register their security alarms for 25 a year. You can still choose not to register, but the fee for false alarms is higher if you dont. If first false alarm is free for enroll lees, but 100 if you have not enrolled. Fees are 100 higher for those who do not register. Report to city council tomorrow night. It is about an i. C. E. Raids in august. Homeland security obtained two guatemala malian men in west oakland. The Oakland Police directed traffic during the operation. Some say that was a violation of the sanctuary statute. Happening today on the peninsula, Palo Alto City Council will take up stanfords expansion plan. The university had thousands of Housing Units and 3 million square feet of academic square space by 2035. Tonight, they will look at the expansions Environmental Impact report. Neighbors of an iconic San Francisco home are upset over proposed renovations of the socalled full house house. People living near the painted lady found complaints with the planning department. They tell the paper the renovations will replicate the way it looks on the original tv show and the rebooth. Franklin who produced the show is the current owner. Neighbors are worried more public attention will bring visitors to the neighborhood and, you know what thats like. Im sure that lawsuit didnt bring any attention to their complaints about attention to the house. He showed us only one lane closed. Well see the effects of that on the approach and the ripple effect. 5 44 now. Disturbing video showing an eerie scene at a bakersville hospital over the weekend. It comes from friday. It captures the moment a shooting forced a hospital into lockdown. You can see the gunman outside the hospital after trying to open the locked door to the hospital. He fires into that glass and then barrels through that glass. The shooting sent patients and hospital staff running for their lives. Police say 44yearold Brandon Clark is the gunman in this video. Clark walked the halls for three minutes before exiting. The Police Department arrived and clark was gunned down in the employee parking lot. Fortunately, no one else was hurt. In oakland, the city is bracing for a citywide strife holding hope that cooler heads will prevail. Nearly every city facility in oakland could be shut down. Two labor unions plan to strike. They have been in labor talks the last seven months. Both sides will meet again today to try to reach a last minute agreement. New this morning, a show of force on the korean peninsula. The u. S. And south korea launched hundreds of aircraft overnight. This is just a training exercise. It comes a week after north korea test fired the most powerful missile ever. The state media says the joint drill pushes all sides to the brink of nuclear war. The white house is trying to undo the damage by president ial tweets. A tweet, scott mcgrew, that indicates the president obstructed justice. You can see why they are scrambling. President trump tweeted about all kinds of things trying to walk back this. A tweet from saturday, the important sentence is the very first one. I had to fire general flynn because he lied to the president and to the fbi. The problem here is the time line. The president says he fired flynn because he lied to the fbi and that firing was february 13th. February 14th, the fbi director, james comey says trump asked him to go easy on flynn. I hope you can let it go, the president reportedly said. Trump denies that conversation took place. Its his word over the then director of the fbi. The white house says trump never wrote that tweet, his lawyer did. Why his lawyer would take over the president ial twitter to write a tweet that implicated his own client in obstruction is a bit hazy this morning. The president is supporting roy moore, the man accused of Sexual Misconduct of a 14yearold running for senate in alabama. Trump says we need roy moore to win alabama. Moore tweeted back, thankful for the president s support. That special election is a week from tomorrow. Several polls indicate moore may win. President trump will head to utah where hes going to announce he is going to reduce the size of some of the National Monuments there. Trump is pushing longtime utah senator, orrin hatch to run for reelection. That would prevent one of his arch enemies, mitt romney from running for the spot. Trump has a strained relationship with utah. Its conservative, but not the way alabama is conservative. The newspaper asked trump to bow out of the race following the access hollywood tape. Not only that, we have breezy winds coming in from the north at 2530 Miles Per Hour. Our high temperature, for those z inland areas reaching 50s. If you will be going out to the beaches, you need to be extra careful as we will have, once again, high tides and high waves as well. As we look at the map, a lot of folks heading to the bay bridge anticipating a huge back up. All weekend, we had four lanes closed. Only the back up off the berkeley curve. The maze despite the feeder freeways no. Additional traffic for the bridge. We are expecting the possibility of that. We track hayward. Also for the trivalley, no problems here for the south bay.
