Melber and chuck todd. Later, a sunday sitdown with the current king of country music, Chris Stapleton. Were at home in tennessee with a man who spent years in nashville as a songwriter before breaking out on his own with a lot of help and harmony from his wife, morgan. Hes completely true to himself and it out shined the sun in a lot of ways to me. I dont know if thats youre blushing, chris. Well, outshine the son. Co sun. A sunday sitdown with Chris Stapleton and his wife and harry smith. Lets begin with new questions about what President Trump may have known after a tweet from his account claiming he fired former National Security adviser Michael Flynn for lying to the fbi. Could that tweet put the president in legal jeopardy . Nbcs jeff bennett is at the white house with more for us. Jeff, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. This morning special counsel Robert Muellers russia investigation appears to inch closer to the president s inner circle. President trump is defiant saying hes not concerned about the guilty plea of Michael Flynn. Are you concerned about what Michael Flynn might tell the special counsel. No, im not. Reporter President Trump addressing for the first time his former National Security advisers guilty plea for lying to fbi investigators about prior contact with a russian official. As part of a plea deal Michael Flynn has agreed to fully cooperate with special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into Russian Election interference. What has been shown is no collusion. No collusion. Theres been absolutely theres been absolutely no collusion. [ inaudible ]. Well see what happens. Reporter on twitter the president defended flynn writing it is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide. But potentially incriminating himself. I had to fire general flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the fbi. He has pled guilty to those lies. Some calling the president s word an omission to the obstruction of justice. He gave no indication he knew flynn had lied to the fbi. No, i fired him because of what he said to mike pence, very simple. Reporter former fbi director james Comey Told Congress that the day after flynn exited the president asked him to be going easy on flynn. I understood he wanted me to drop any investigation of flynns account with the russians. Reporter earlier on twitter mr. Trump said he never asked comey to stop investigating flynn. The president s personal lawyer john dowd saying he was the one who crafted the tweets. The white house hasnt weighed in, but the tweets sparking questions this morning about how much the president knew and when. Reporter willie, john dowd is telling nbc news he drafted the tweet and gave it to another white house official. He said hes out of the tweeting business and did not intend to make news. Dowd indicated to nbc he conflated the president being aware of flynns looig to the Vice President and lying to the fbi and that is not the case. Jeff, thank you. Ari melber is an nbc legal analyst and host of the beat. I had to fire general flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the fbi. Do you see a legal problem there . And if so, why . The potential legal problem, lying to the Vice President , bad, usually legal. Lying to the fbi, automatically illegal. The white house is the last house in the country youd expect to want to combine those two which this lawyer says he did accidentally. And it goes back to the president initially saying he fired mueller because of lying to the Vice President with no mention he knew he had lied to the fbi. Right. Thats why he fired mike flynn. Right. The issue there is what the criminal liability is. There might be a reason that you remove a Government Official because youre just unhappy with their performance. Thats how theyve always cast the mike flynn situation. This adds intrigue where they dont want it. Mike flynn, of course, allegedly has criminal exposure for more than just lying. As soon as the white house itself starts to add to the pile of information the president may have known, it can look bad for the president if this lawyer ease telling the truth though, it would suggest another staffing error and not on this one the president s fault. Part of the White House Defense for all of this is that it was totally normal. In fact, responsible for general flynn and the Transition Team to meet with the Russian Ambassador, to talk on the phone with the Russian Ambassador as they prepare their new administration between election day and inauguration day. If you lie to the fbi thats a problem but does the act of his speaking to the ambassador a problem . No. The sole act of talking to a foreign official is not automatically a problem at all, and that is why its easy to get your head spinning here. You say, wait a minute, the trump folks right . Are they on to something by saying that . The problem with that defense for them is even if thats true, it raises the bigger question if it was so routine, why were you lying about it . Because nobody really disputes that now, right . There is a bit of a circle here, but the circle lands back on mike flynn hiding something and now heres the big difference, bob mueller and mike flynn agree on this. They agree that he lied and they say mike flynns going to be on the team to help explain why and solve other crimes if he was not acting alone. Rewere expecting another busy week. Thank you. You can watch by the way aris show week nights at 6 p. M. Eastern. Lets turn to chuck todd. Good morning. Good morning. Good to see you. The president is up and tweeting as jeff reported at the top of the show. Undermining the fbi was his tweet saying its at an alltime low. Undermining his attempts to undermine the Mueller Investigation here, tweeting about hillary clinton, calling her crooked hillary again, tweeting about abu qatada and their suspension of brian ross. What now, a question weve asked many times on this show and checked in with you on, is the level of concern. This is theyve struggled to compartmentalize this investigation throughout the year but now its almost going to be impossible to do this. Willie, the white House Counsel is now being interviewed as a witness with the special prosecutor. This is a person thats in charge of being the lawyer for the office of the presidency, not the president s personal lawyer, but when you start having conflicts like that, it just means everybodys looking over their shoulder inside the west wing and thats the importance of the mike flynn flip here is that it brings the scope. It sort of it sort of focuses things for mueller we now know where his focus is. Theres not many people above flynn, right . It brings it inside the white house to the president because mike flynn worked there, but it also brings it inside the trump family circle. I have to tell you this. You look at all of this, probably the person thats popping the most tums this weekend is jared kushner. Yeah. Thats a name we keep hearing. Whats jumped out at you the most this week, chuck . Theres so much going on. I think sunday morning is a good time to crystallize it and sort through what is important. What is the one you say, you know what, this is a story thats going to punch through look, i think one story that sort of got lost in the ether here was the president telling people that he thinks a Government Shutdown is good politics for him. That is that is introducing another issue in the month of december that i dont know if our political world can handle. But i have to tell you this morning, willie, lets if you just look at what weve seen this morning, weve got a couple of smoking what look like smoking guns. The president s tweets that weve been debating. Id like to know how many times john dowd has sent tweets before this one. Seems like a highly unusual thing that john dowd tweets for the president. And then k. T. Mcfarlands email. Right. You just take those two at face value and youre like, what else is there . Right. And the question theyre raising with k. T. Mcfarlands email, being influenced by russia, theyre saying they were kidding and characterizing what the democrats had said. Right. There was some Business Done on capitol hill in the dark of night, about 2 00 in the morning on saturday morning. The Senate Passed tax reform by a 5149 margin. Now they have to get together with the house, thats no easy feat. Do you think the president is going to get his wish of tax law before the end of the year . Im still thinking its only 5050 he gets to sign this before christmas. I think its possible. The differences between the house and senate bill could get a little gummed up between the two of them. Look, they have very little margin for error. And in some of the differences here could be the difference between 218 votes in the house and 216 votes and things like that. So i think its possible this thing doesnt get signed until after january but hes going to sign this tax bill. And what its going to mean is this i think youre going to have a political war over this tax bill that will feel very reminiscent to the political war over the Health Care Bill in 2010. Yeah. And weve already seen some strong comments from democrats, the leadership, saying this is effectively the death of democracy the way this thing went through. Chuck todd, thank you very much. Well look for more on meet the press. Chuck will be joined by former Trump Campaign manager cory lewandows lewandowski. Lewandowski will speak out about that pook tomorrow on today. Some other headlines, abc news has suspended brian ross reporter for four weeks without pay for what the network is calling a serious error on his reporting. On friday, when Michael Flynn entered his guilty plea, ross incorrectly reported that flynn was prepared to testify that toig told him to make contact with the russians while he was still a candidate. The report rattled the financial markets. Abc later issued a correction. A florida teenager who was missing for nearly a week has been reunited with her parents after she was found more than 1,000 miles away from home. 17yearold caitlyn frazinas parents flew to upstate new york after she was found on friday afternoon with her 27yearold soccer coach ryan rodriguez. Dylan is here now with a look at the weather. Good morning, dylan. Good morning, willie and everyone. A big change to the forecast. Colder temperatures are working in. With that comes a little bit of snow. Were seeing it back through mainly the higher elevations. It is going to get pretty nasty especially across the Northern Plains with gusty winds tagging along with the potential for a few inches of snow. We will see conditions improve out west but we do have some winter storm warnings, winter storm watches extending through south dakota, north dakota and northern minnesota where we could see wind gusts up near 50 miles per hour. That combined with a few inches of snow means we could see reduced visibilities and possibly blizzard conditions. The highest elevations get most of the snow. About 9 to 12 inches possible. Even across northern minnesota, International Falls could see about 6 inches of snow. But again its the blowing snow that is going to make things so dangerous. This cold front is going to move eastward. Behind it is where the cold air is. Were going to see rain work into the midwest. As we go into monday. Heavy rain up and down the east coast late tuesday and it could end briefly with snow on the backside of that by wednesday showers overnight, clearing skies in San Francisco and almost supermoon. That will be later on tonight. Right now, almost full moon, partly cloudy skies. Temperature lower 50s. Low 50s in san jose. Mostly sunny, cool and breezy this afternoon. Upper 50s, San Francisco. The gobble did i saturday night live returning yesterday with alec baldwin as President Trump. Actress sersha ronan hosted with musical guest u2. Chris stapleton was nominated for two grammys. For years the 39yearold kentucky native with the cowboy hat and long, thick beard was a beloved songwriter behind the scenes. Stapletons bigname friends in music city cheered when in 2015 he put out his own album called traveller with a stripped down guitar sound and an unmistakable voice, the album went double platinum. Chris and his wife morgan invited us to their farm outside of nashville for a sunday sitdown to talk about his rise to stardom and his latest album which this morning sits at number one on the itunes chart ahead of u2 and taylor swift. Used to spend my nights at a barroom that was probably the moment that struck a match and threw it on the fire. Reporter november 4th, 2015, the night Chris Stapletons life changed for good with an assist from one of the biggest stars on the planet, justin timberlake. Reporter the eight minute performance set the arena and staple to bes career on fire. His debut album traveller rocketed to the top of the charts with sales growing nearly 6,000 after the show. Stapleton won three cma awards that night. Three months later he added a pair of grammys. Did it feel in the moment like something magical was happening . I knew that we were going to have fun. Hes so musical and make it two guys that wouldnt seem like they would go together at all find a place to live together. Reporter that stage was a long way from stapletons humble beginnings. He grew up the son of a coal miner in a small town in eastern kentucky. He was a musician, a Football Player and the valedictorian of his high school class. Reporter when did the music switch go on for you . The music switch . Well, i had an uncle who was a musical guy and he taught me, you know, a few things on the guitar. I kind of came through music through a lack of wanting to do anything else. Reporter stapleton took his guitar and moved to nashville in 2001. Within four days he had a song writing deal. Once i found out that you could be a songwriter for a living, i thought that was the greatest job i had ever heard of and i was going to figure out how to get that job. Reporter over a decade and a half stapleton has been one of music citys most sought after and respected songwriters. Hes written hits for country super stars like Darius Rucker and luke brian drink a beer reporter including brines song drink a beer about the loss of a loved one. Stapletons father died not long after it became a hit. My dad passed away in the time that had become a number one song. We were going to sing it on the cma awards and i hadnt thought about it. I was going to go sing a song with luke because he asked me to sing it. I turned around and he looked at me and he said, man, i really appreciate you doing this considering your dad passing away and everything. I almost lost it. I hadnt thought about it. It was quite the thing for me and i always thank him for that. Maybe not for making me almost cry on stage but it was that song actually became something meaningful to me more that it had been when we wrote it. Thats the beauty of songs, they go out in the world and they come back and they find meaning. Drink a beer reporter song writing also introduced stapleton to his most important partner, wife morgan, who is his harmony on stage and off. We werent really like great friends or anything, but wed hang around the same Publishing House a lot. I think you brought up lets write it friday at 6 00. I dont know. And i think we maybe wrote half a song. Maybe. And left when the sun came up on saturday. I mean, nothing went on. We were at the Publishing House, but it was we went to dinner. Yeah, we went to dinner. Reporter stapleton played in a couple of bands in nashville, but his solo career almost ended before it began. In 2013 his first single didnt do much business, and the album it came from was scrapped by his record label. But a road trip with morgan after his fathers death that same year was the inspiration for stapletons break out 2015 album traveller. Im just a traveller on this road reporter and it was morgan who has always believed chriss talent would be recognized, even when chris wasnt so sure. One day. One day the worlds going to know. Its been very very satisfying to see the world wake up. Can you put your finger on it, morgan, what is so unique and special about him . Its genuine. Its authentic. Whatever makeup he has for writing a song or singing a song or playing a show, it just takes him over and its him completely and it out shines the sun in a lot of ways to me. I i dont know. Youre blushing, chris. Well, out shine the sun. Come on. I think youre a very bright star, i do. Okay. Thank you, honey. Reporter the stapletons have been married for ten years. They have two Young Children with twins on the way. Ready for twins, chris . Oh, yeah. I think i laughed for about 20 minutes straight when they told us. You laughed . I laughed out of shock. I was like i just i just i didnt know what else to do. It wasnt a laugh, it was more like a giggle. He giggled for like 25 minutes. I just i was in shock. Shock is the only word. Yeah. Reporter this week stapleton was nominated for three more grammy awards, including best country album for his second album from a room volume 1 the follow up from a room volume 2. There are happier moments on this record. This record feels a little more hopeful than some of the other records have. Reporter for all the awards and accolades, Chris Stapleton has received over the last two years or so, he got the only approval he needed from his dad before he passed away. I know he was a big fan of yours. I guess he said, i took alan jackson out and put you in. Yeah. Reporter that must have been the highest compliment. That was the highest compliment i could have gotten from dad. The only other highest compliment was i took meryl haggard out. I never got that one. At the time he had had Alan Jacksons greatest hits sitting in his cd player for a long time so when he removed alan jackson and put me in, that was the highest compliment he could have given, pretty sure. Reporter made it to number two behind merle . I made it to number two behind merle and im just fine with that. [ cheers and applause ] reporter stapletons album from a room volume 2 is available now. As i said, its already number one. The name of the album comes from the place where it was recorded in nashvilles famed rca studio a. Hear more including the story and the hit song chris wrote in 15 minutes while he was waiting for morgan to get ready for a night out. Next sunday, a sunday sitdown with ed sheeran, the oneman show that started in a small town in the u. K. And now sells out stadiums everywhere. Ed sheeran next week on sunday today. Dylan is back with another look at the weather. Hey, dylan. Hey, willie. We are going to see a storm system make its way through the middle of the country early this week especially up near the Northern Plains and midwest where we could see blizzard conditions not because of a lot of snow but because of a lot of wind. That light snow could cause very reduced vitsbilisibility. We could see a little bit of a wintry mix across parts of the east coast early wednesday morning and then on friday coastal showers and a bit chilly on this sunday morning, San Francisco, 52 degrees, near 50 currently in san jose and wet roads and streets after overnight rain that is now starting to clear out of the bay area. Scattered snow showers through the sierra. Cool and, at times, windy. Well see the wind speeds picking up as we go through monday. A very dry forecast. It should take us through next weekend. And thats your latest forecast. Dylan, thank you very much. Well see you in just a minute. Next on sunday today theyre legal in the United States but proponents of Safe Injection Sites for opioid users say they save lives. We have an eye opening look inside one of them. There was an old woman who lived in a shoe. She had so many children she had to buy lots of groceries. While she was shopping for organic fruits and veggies, burglars broke into her shoe. They stole her kids Mountain Bikes and tablets along with her new juice press. Luckily the Geico Insurance agency had helped her with Homeowners Insurance. She got full replacement on the stolen goods and started a Mountain Bike juice delivery service. Call geico and see how affordable Homeowners Insurance can be. Somewhat lost in the daily fire hose of news that comes out of washington these days was the announcement from attorney general Jeff Sessions that counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway is leading the effort to fight americas Opioid Epidemic. In october President Trump declared the wave of opioid deaths a Public Health emergency. In our sunday spotlight msnbcs Jacob Soberoff gives us an extraordinary and sometimes jarring look inside socalled safe injection centers. Theyre controversial, but some experts say they should be part of the solution to the crisis. Reporter as the overdose death rate driving the Opioid Crisis continues to skyrocket, politicians in washington are trying to figure out how to solve it but here in brooklyn at this place theyre dealing with a more immediate problem, how to stop people from dying today. I need a three ten pack. Emily, what is in there . Syringes. Reporter i notice that people come in here, they grab needles and go in and out of the bathroom. Can i look at the bathroom and see whats going on . Sure. Sure. Reporter whats going on is people are injecting heroin in the bathroom and someone stands outside with naloxone. Is someone in there now . Reporter but the people who run this place cant actually supervise the injections. Thats illegal in the u. S. Unlike in ten other countries where supervised injections are proven to save lives. This is a space thats been set up for people who are going to use syringes who we dont want them to use in the outdoors or a public setting. It pains me that the only option is we can say is go into that bathroom and do what you have to do and were outside to save your life. Reporter here in toronto just several hundred miles away from brooklyn supervised injections arent happening in secret any longer. In fact, the government is starting to let them happen in the open. This is a brandnew supervised injection site and you guys are in the heart of downtown toronto. We are. Reporter its like a Doctors Office meets williams sonoma. Its nice in here. Thank you. People who inject drugs in toronto are really worried about overdose. Theyre using alone in their home. What if they overdose . So theyre going to use the service, too. Reporter the city opened this facility following a popup injection site in this toronto park. In this tent here people are allowed to smoke drugs and in the other tent people are injecting drugs. Need you. Oh, im needed. Sorry. Go ahead. In the tent . Sounds like theres an overdose happening in progress inside the tent. Thats why they have these. Were into the going to touch you. Can you take some deep wreat breaths . In three months theyve saved 94 lives. Do you come here a lot . When i want to shoot up and do drugs. Reporter did you use today . Yeah, i shot up. Two points of fentanyl. What does that mean, two points . 2 of a gram. Is that a lot . Yeah. It will kill you. Reporter itll kill you. You, not me. Reporter pops is also a user. The thing is, its just been in the last few years that heroin drug supply and the crystal meth supply and the crack supply are all being laced with fentanyl. Fentanyl is its a crisis. Reporter at the end of the night pops let us follow him into the safe injection tent. So this is some fentanyl that i just purchased. Reporter fentanyl is a cheap, extremely powerful, highly addictive opioid now pervasive in the illicit drug supply. Almost instantly the drug took effect. Are you all right . Yeah. Reporter a volunteer nurse put an oxygen on pops finger. Other than feel like holy mackerel watching this, what do you want people to think . I want people to think everyones lives are valuable. This is a systemic issue that stresses people out and causes trauma in their life. If hes looking to use no matter the circumstances, is this the most effective . The most effective thing is to not having people use alone. You need to respond when they drop. Were not addressing peoples mental health, were not addressing their housing, were keeping them alive. Cant help dead people. Cant help dead people . No. Reporter a stark fact playing out in epidemic proportions. For sunday today, Jacob Soberoff, nbc news, toronto. Jacob, thank you very much.
