Talking about the verdict that left so many people stunned. A jury of six men and six women handed down a not guilty verdict in the kate steinle murder case. That is sparking emotional reaction across the country this morning. From the beginning, Defense Attorneys for jose zarate says the death was an accident. He found the gun and it fired accidentally. Zarate is in this country illegally sparking a debate on immigration. He will be sentenced on the gun charge in two weeks. Many think its not enough. Pete suratos joins us live at pier 14 where kate steinle was killed. Theres a memorial growing there. What is next now in this case, pete . Reporter good morning to you, laura. We are here at pier 14 where kate steinle was killed in july, 2015. We are getting reaction from immigration and Customs Enforcement when they released a statement with what they plan to do next with zarate. Well get to that statement in a moment. I want to show you this vigil growing behind me. Remember kate steinle put together hours after the verdict was reached, that not guilty verdict was reached. We are showing that poster board. Comments saying rest in peace. She will be remembered. Comments about forming a border wall in reference to President Trumps proposal to build a border wall. Theres been a debate here in the bay area as well as around the nation when you consider zarates nondocumented immigration status as well as San Franciscos policy. A lot of folks wondering if this could have been prevented. We got a statement from immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding that. It reads San Franciscos policy of refusing to honor i. C. E. Detainers undermines it rule of law. This tragedy could have been prevented if San Francisco turned the alien over to i. C. E. Instead of releasing him to the streets. It is unconscionable they continue to danger the lives of americans while ignoring the harm inflicted on constituents. Following the conclusion of the case, i. C. E. Will work to take custody of zarate and remove him from the country. Kate steinles family was not at the courthouse for the jury deliberations that spanned six days. They spoke with the San Francisco chronicle. Here is a clip from that interview. I think he did shoot toward them. The city and federal level miserably failed in protecting kate. The alt right are the one that is put this together, the vigil you are seeing. As you can imagine, a very emotional time for the family. They were not there for the jury deliberation. President trump being very unspoken about how he feels on social media. He feels the way a lot of us do, shocked. He is definitely making political hay out of it. He staid jury was not told the killer was a seven time felon. The Schumer Pelosi democrats will pay a price in the election. They were not told zarate entered the country many times illegally. Juries are often not told of previous crimes if they are not directly related to what you were accused of. Of course, schumer and pelosi were not on the jury. Kate steinle killer came back and back always committing crimes. This info was not used in court. A travesty of justice to build the wall. There is a bill called kates law. The family does not like the name, but its in the senate. It would strengthen penalties against people like zarate who repeatedly rake immigration laws. The republican controlled senate, it is stuck there. Thats the law he wants to see pass. Of course, trump talked about so much of this case while he was running for it. Its got great political hay. Tomorrow marks one year since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland. The deadliest fire in oaklands history. 36 People Killed when flames tore through the building. You recall the ghost ship warehouse was a Gathering Place for artists and musicians. It was a year ago, one year ago tomorrow night that a number of them gathered inside that structure for an electronic music event that was not permitted by law. The structure, powered by electrical boards ignited, trapping many inside. All the 36 people who did not get out died of smoke inhilation. The city of oakland was criticized for not having shut down the place in spite of previous visits by police and other people. Two people have been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Both pled not guilty. Mayor libby of oakland said they have learned lessons and are improving residents safety. They touted new software for police and zoning to make it easier to track and fix problem properties. They will double and triple the number of building inspectors. Later this morning, the chapel of chimes in oakland will open their doors for 24 hours straight, all weekend long to provide people a safe place to commemorate what happened. Tonight, they will light candles and a plaque that reads ghost ship fire, we will never forget. The concern becomes, we want to remember these people. We want to celebrate these people. We dont want to sum their lives up in a way they passed. Celebrate the things they were doing and the relationships they held. Reporter we are putting information up on your tv screen. The east bay, 43 degrees. Todays overall highs will be mild. Expect similar conditions to what we have been enjoying all week long. Yesterday, we were a couple degrees warmer than earlier this week. San francisco, a high of 60 degrees. Oakland, 62. Concord, 67. Palo alto, expect a high of 64. Future cast is showing the arrival of cloud cover. It looks like its probably going to make its way in for the north bay initially. North of the Golden Gate Bridge, 1 00 a. M. Hour. If i take you through the time line, the storm system makes its approach midnight, possibly tonight. Really tomorrow at 12 30 noon. If i fast forward that low pressure system, at 5 30 sweeping through oregon. Yes, the white and blue hughs are slow. If you look at 5 00 a. M. , along the coastline, we might get a chance of seeing light showers. If i fast forward through this into the maybe 4 00, 5 00 in the afternoon by 6 00 on sunday, it clears out so beautifully and so nicely that you are really going to have a chance to enjoy that good sunday funday. The snow forecast, a couple inches. Saturday by 2 00 is when the storm system is expected to make an impact. It gets heavy as we head into the overnight hours and early sunday morning. Thats when you are going to want to check conditions. I think tomorrow, early morning, thats going to be the best bet of the best driving conditions if you have plans to head up there. It is expected to get breezy and windy in spots. Notice a slight drop in temperatures from 50s to upper 50s by sunday. Lets go ahead and check in with mike. Jamming up toward the Treasure Island tunnel there. A crash blocking the slow lane traveling east toward the oakland side. A lot of activity and slowing over the skyway, off the skyway toward that one. Crews are on scene, hopefully that clears quickly. Coming from oakland, a blip toward the toll plaza. All lanes backing up. We may have the metering lights on this morning. That would be not unexpected for a friday, but sometimes they dont deal with the traffic. Its not light enough to deal with it. The drive toward the bay bridge is great. The earlier slowing, i dont know if you remember, 18 minutes while the construction cleared and traffic breaks. Dramatic new dashcam video of the moments after a fiery car crash in illinois. Officers spra 5 24. Officers sprang into action to rescue a driver in that car. This happened tuesday night 40 miles west of chicago. That man in the vehicle was actually a hit and run suspect who crashed his car and refused to exit as the flames grew. Look at the flames there. Three officers suffered minor injuries. 5 25 right now. Thieves are targeting mail in the south bay. Another mail truck has been broken into. U. S. Postal service says it happened last tuesday. Judging by the temperature trend, especially in San Francisco, one thing that is going to be noticeable is we are going get more cloud cover into today. Then well start seeing an increase into the 50s. We are going to top out in the upper 50s and lower 60s. We are going start seeing areas of patchy fog. In fact, we have new video from overnight showing this vigil when it was put together. The folk that is put together this vigil are associated with the socalled White Nationalists or alt right groups that put together this vigil on the poster board we were showing you. Comments saying rest in peace and also, build a wall, in reference to President Trumps plan to build a border wall. Zarate is an undocumented immigrant. A lot of folks are wondering or questioning if this could have been prevented. We did get the statement from Customs Enforcement about the decision, not verdict, decision. It reads San Franciscos policy of refusing to honor i. C. E. Detainers is a blatant threat to public safety. It is unconscionable that col ti politicians continue to danger the lives, ignoring the harm inflicted on constituents. I. C. E. Will work to take custody of zarate and ultimately remove him from the country. We spoke to a legal expert about what should happen next for Kate Steinles family. Right now, technically, he is being held in jail in violation of his own civil rights. He is now served more than his maximum sentence on the charge. There is recourse for the steinle family and for people like the attorney general and the president who, apparently, think this was an injustice. That is a civil rights prosecution in federal court. If the Trump Administration thinks that an injustice was done here, simply put its money where its mouth is. Call the u. S. Attorney for the Northern District of california and say we want you to look into prosecuting him. Reporter back out here live, you see the poster board with the picture of kate steinle. Continuing coverage of the Sexual Misconduct allegations against matt lauer. Earlier, the today show shared images of the former coanchor. We are seeing the first image of matt lauer taken near his home on long island. He is facing allegations of Sexual Misconduct by three women who came forward. Variety reported on accusations from three women. None of them have been identified. The number of accusers is between three and six. Questions have been raised about whether executives knew of the complaints prior to monday evening. Several former executives didnt know of any complaints and the network responded saying unequivocally, no current management knew of any accusations. Our coverage continues at 7 00 a. M. , after today in the bay. It is 5 36 right now. In fremont, detectives looking for a man caught on surveillance camera. He carjacked a landscaper. It happened on karen street, in the irvington neighborhood of fremont. The subject was followed. Slapped the land caper in the head and stole his truck. The victim was not injured. The suspect remains on the loose. Happening today, a chance for people with outstanding warrants to avoid spending time in jail during the holidays. Today begins the one month long operation called second chance. People with nonviolent traffic warrants can selfsurrender no matter what the bill is. People get a court date, able to walk out. The offer ends december 31st. Continues to expand in the bay area in fremont. We have video to show you of our nbc bay area sky ranger of the possible sight. They want to lease two big Office Buildings in the district of fremont next to the regional park. Its near the eastern end of the dumbarton bridge. They are 200,000 square feet. If you look at San Francisco, we are going to start off fairly cloudy out there. The temperatures, well, if you notice, 49 degrees by 8 00 a. M. , then at 9 00 a. M. , we start climbing to the 50s. Going to be cloudy out there. Judging by the storm system, it looks like the majority of the rain is going to be sticking to the north. North of the Golden Gate Bridge, napa, santa rosa, a chance of seeing showers. San jose, for the most part, saturdays forecast looking at the cloud cover. Because of that system, the majority and the biggest impact is going to be the cloud cover. If you notice, we are going start in the 40s again and climb into the 50s on saturday by 11 00 a. M. , we should be in the upper 50s. We are going keep that cloud cover all day long. Its not going to be as clear as what we have seen all weekend long or all week long. If you are heading to lake tahoe, a couple changes there. 40 degrees by 6 00. 39 degrees, then we see a drop in temperatures. If you notice, we have a little snow coming in to play at 3 00 to 4 00 and expected to kind of come down really hard into saturday night and early sunday morning. An ohio Police Officer accidentally using a stun gun on his partner. Take a look here. Ouch the two Police Officers responding to a domestic call on thanksgiving. A man inside the car wouldnt show his id to the officers. One officer e veventually pulle him from the car. They used a stun gun on the man. One hit the officer. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The officer who used that stun gun is back on the job. A dangerous and reckless driver in San Francisco. You have to stop and watch this. Theres a person in the road. What happened, as the car was spinning, a passenger appeared to fly out of the car. He was injured, reportedly screaming in pain. It all happened while the owners were right there. Man loading up the back of the pt cruise zer and another man walked up to the drivers side door. The owner tried to stop the carjacker, but nearly run over by another car when he ran into the street. The manager of the salon says she keeps her doors locked while she is working. It was actually very scary, very shocking that someone would do an old man like that. They were right in front of the salon. I work late every night by myself. They told me to make sure i keep my door locked to keep safe. You have to be aware. The victim is in his 70s. He was with his wife at the time.
