Delicate waters on a historic and controversial visit to myanmar well, pope francis is navigating some delicate waters on a historic and controversial visit to myanmar. At first a first for many any pope, rather. Thats right. Nbcs Anne Thompson reports. Reporter the smiles, the waves, the embraces all mask the diplomatic risk for pope francis in myanmar, an overwhelmingly buddhist nation. Billed as a trip of love and peace to a country in the midst of a brutal military crackdown against a religious minority, the rohingya muslims. I think this is the most risky trip that the pope has made in terms that if he says the wrong thing or something that the military or the Buddhist Monks dont like, then there could be violence. Reporter the pontiffs journey starting with a courtesy visit by myanmars military chief, whose Facebook Page says he told the pope myanmar has no religious discrimination. His forces accused of burning villages, murdering children, raping women and girls and causing an exodus or more than 600,000 people to the neighboring nation of bangladesh. Failure to stop the violence has tarnished the peptation of myanmars civilian leader and noble peace prize winner aung san suu kyi. And some fear this trip could do to the same to francis who met with the leader today. I think the difference between her and pope francis is that she is actually in total denial that ethnic cleansing is going on and has in fact denied it. The pope is not going to do that. That was Anne Thompson reporting. The stakes are high for the pope and myanmars 600,000 catholics. What he does and says could well affect their security.
