We have been so thrilled and blessed that this many people in our community wanted to turn out and help their neighbors in need. Yes. In the first 12 years, weve been able to raise and give away nearly 7 million. This year alone, it will be another 900,000, and it still has that Small Community feel, but a Big Community impact. Reporter california fire used to burn all the time before scientists started doing research, this hadnt burned in a century. Were looking at Fire Prevention . It is. Reporter dr. Scott steeves runs ucberkeleys science lab studying ways to make forests more fireresistant and slow the spread when wildfires do happen. Reporter this is the third time in 15 years the team set fire to this exact plot of land. They say burns like this need to happen more often in more places. To do this and really make a difference in the landscape we would have to do this at much bigger areas. Thats the thing that worries us. Were not doing it. Not even close. Reporter why . We dont have a lot of experience doing this in california. We have to train a workforce. Reporter stephen says building the workforce is a challenge. Right now fire prevent is divvied up among a variety of agencies. Most of time workers from nonprofits fill in the gaps. We cleared this area down here. Which was really thick with all the dead vegetation. Reporter they built a twomile fuel break near homes in the santa cruz mountains. That vegetation grows up and up and up. Reporter they point out the area faces the same dangers as the Sonoma County communities that burned to the ground last month. Cal fire is responsible for protecting that neighborhood in santa clara county. The agency oversees about a third of the land in the state. Thats why forest Economics Expert bill stewart says calfire should take the lead on an aggressive prevent program but says its not equipped to do it. Basically its a Fire Department. Reporter stewart says the agency made some progress, but lacks the scientists and staffers needed to coordinate a staidwide effort. Thats not really what they were designed to do yet are dragged into it. Were working to change the paradigm to put more time and energy into preventing fires. Reporter this man served as one of calfires deputy directors says they focused on beefing up inspections, brush clearance and prescribed burns but critics say its not enough. Their perspective, calfire should be setting the tone from the top. We need to start work on these big forest projects, and thats what it trickled down. The last couple of years, set high goals for firefighters to do more in fire pooecrevention. Reporter the director says the agency fell short on some of those goals. Meeting 70 of the prescribed fire targets. Should calfire advocate to the governor for more resources . More funds to do the really important work that your agency acknowledged needs to happen . Both this administration as well as the legislature invested more money into doing Fire Prevention work. Reporter calfire recently received a 200 million windfall from sacramento. Aside from this onetime boost, the agency spent 75 million on Fire Prevention each year, but thats just 4 of the total budget. Meanwhile, scientists working in the forest hope their new techniques for mitigating mega fires become a priority. Its really something that gets a little more traction every year, but it doesnt feel like it ever gets out of the gate. Reporter calfire recently signed an agreement with several agencies to increase the pace and scale of controlled burns, and also grants money to local fire democrats and fire safe councils. A phone scam targeting that group pap robocall, claims to be from the Chinese Embassy saying a packa acage being held for pi but you need a credit card number to pick it up. This is a scam. Call police if youve been notified. And cigarette ads banned from tv and radio, a big deal when it stopped at the time. This weekend, theyre back sort of. Cigarette Companies Intentionally design cigarettes with enough nicotine to create and sustain addiction. The ads arent for tobacco. They are antitobacco. A court order is forcing those tobacco giants to air these commercials about the health risks of smoking. The commercials are a result of a 1999 lawsuit which big tobacco lost. The judge ruled the companies were guilty of fraud, because they downplayed the known health risks. A warning this holiday for shoppers planning to visit one of the largest malls in the bay area. Police say thieves are targeting cars in parking lots and neighborhoods around Valley Fair Mall in san jose. Heard it before. Still happening down. Also warning folks about parking safely around santana row. Nbc bay area spoke with one woman who says someone stole her vintage Louis Vuitton bag from her car this week. She says the thieves broke the back window of her car. I was just isnt shock. There maybe an hour and a half. Looked it, had to, broke it really quick and left. Nothing else was missing. She tells us there were about five other cars also broken into at around the same time as hers. We researched crime data overnight and found a total of 21 similar incidents of car breakin in that area in the past two weeks. 6 38. The last five years this stretch has been open to pedestrians. They laid down turf. Benches to sit on. And the weather is not going to keep you from going out on black friday. Or green friday. Going to the park. Weather shouldnt be a problem today or tomorrow but its the weekend it might be a problem. So now you may want to Pay Attention to the forecast. Here it is. Saturdays forecast overall along the coast and bay, start with mostly cloudy skies and stay fairly cloudy, but as we head into the later portion of the night, inland areas especially the north bay as well, expect to see a system move in and thats going to bring a series of showers. So youve got to get ready for it, because today the north bay is already seeing showers. Then the remainder of the bay area is expected to see widespread rain. On sundays forecast, you can see the coast, bay and inland all expecting to see rain. Another thing you can expect to see sunday as well is breezy to windy conditions. Something to keep in mind. If you had plans to be outside at all, or maybe parties planned this weekend, you may want to bring it indoors. As of right now, modelling showing a pretty good amount of rainfall, and sticking, unfortunately all sunday long all through monday and possibly even tuesday. If youre heading to the beach, your best bet is friday and saturday. As we head into saturday, though, start noticing temperatures really drop. We go from 70s to 60s. Theres goes sunday. A construction worker working at Travis Air Force base when he and another worker were taken into custody. He has been in the country more than a decade. His coworker was deported back in august, bought judge ordered him released on bond while his case makes its way through the immigration court. He says hes grateful for this small victory.
