We have a guest in our studio who was the first person to come forward with allegations against Alabama Senate candidate, roy moore. Eight other women came forward after her. Were going to talk to her in her First Television interview. That comes up in our next half hour. We want to begin with breaking news overnight. Charles manson is dead at the age of 83. The subject of repulsion, devotion, and endless fascination. Nbcs Gadi Schwartz has the latest on his infamous life. Gadi, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, matt. Over the past week, rumors had been swirling that Charles Manson was close to death. And last night, word he died of natural clauses. News that closes a chapter of the violent history of his murderous cult. For decades, Charles Manson terrorized the world. The man never ashamed of his brutal acts of violence. Theres no need to feel guilty. I havent done anything im ashamed of. Reporter this morning, the notorious cult leader died at the age of 83. His held deteriorating in january. Then, he was seriously ill and rushed to the hospital. His legacy, sordid in life and now death. I would take this book and beat you to death with it, and i wouldnt feel a thing. Reporter the swastika on his forehead, unmistakable. His jailhouse interviews, unforgettable. Maybe if i killed 400, 500 people, i would have felt better. Reporter manson committed robberies at age 13. Most of his early years were spent behind bars. I was raised in here. Reporter in 1967, he begged to be in prison. I cant handle the maniacs outside. Let me back in. Reporter he was let out, masterminding crimes, leading to the play of the century. The mayhem, known as helter skelter, in a ranch near las angeles. Blan washing members of his cult preaching about a race war. Then, august 9th, 1969, a murder spree. Members of his cult raiding the home of Roman Polanski and actress sharon tate. Polanski was away but tate was stabbed to death. Four others, massacred. Manson joining his followers with another Home Invasion of Leno Labianca and his wife, rosemary. During his trial, his followers staging bizarre protests. One cult member tried to assassinate president gerald ford. If you had to put a picture of the devil, you would put it right on charlies face. Reporter sentenced to death, manson should have died decades ago. But he was spared when california abolished the death penalty. An inmate poured paint thinner on him and lit him on fire. Mass murderer Charles Manson, denied parole. Reporter over the years, authorities denied manson parole dozens of times. Any comment, mr. Man son . Im going back down in a hole. Reporter in 2013, he described himself in one of his final prison interviews with Rolling Stone magazine. Im a crook. Im an outlaw. Im a rebel. I was raised up in prison. Reporter mansons death, sparking deep emotions for the families of those who were killed. Remember the victims. Remember what they were doing. Remember what they suffered so horrifically. And remember justice. Reporter that justice, that Charles Manson remained locked up until his dying day. Im the devil. You didnt know that . Reporter most of the violent members of the manson family are still in prison. Over the years since the murder sprees, two have been released and two more recommended for parole. The possible release is being reviewed by the governor of california. Matt and savannah, back to you. Were joined by nbc senior correspondent, tom brokaw. Tom, good morning. It sickens me to say that were used to covering mass murders. But take me back to 1969 when this happened and 70, when the trial occurred. What are your most vivid memories . My vivid memory was being in the newsroom on a saturday morning, catching up on some stuff. And jack perkins says, theres a big murder in the hills. And he said it was sharon tate. And the next night, the labiancas were killed. And that was the beginning of chaos. In the context of what was going on in 1969, we had 500,000 people in vietnam, turns out Richard Nixon had a secret invasion of cambodia going on. The black panthers and it was utter chaos. In 1968, we were rocking and rolling. And squeaky fromme sat vigil during the trial. I was the White House Correspondent in sacramento. Suddenly, gerald ford is on the robe line. Gun, gun. I look up, and there she was. Squeaky fromme. I was the only one who knew who she was. Secret service took her to the side. I kept yelling at her, who are you . She said, it didnt go off. Damn near killed the president of the United States. The secret Service Agent got his hand over the bridge and saved him. You had seen her at the manson trial. You talk about the saturday morning in the newsroom and finding out. And when it turns out its Charles Manson and a bunch of young people, as you were just saying, looked Like High School kids. It did. But it was also a time when the haze of lsd and marijuana and a lot of hallucinogenics were all over california. Later i found out, Robert Mitchum had kids down at the beach. And they knew about him. He was around at things with his craziness. And they all knew about him. But no one expected it to happen like this. Again, you had on the one hand, the rise of ronald reagan, an on the other hand, a rise of the panthers. It was a chaotic time. He horrified most people in those rambling interviews we saw him give. But he also fascinated people. And im not sure yet why. Im not sure why, either. He was a truly evil, dark person. And i believe he knew exactly what he was doing. He was playing with us in that way. He was getting back at the establishment for what whatever it was. And the guys and the men and women around him, all looked like they were going to the junior prom. But they came from dysfunctional families in many instances. So, as wacky as we are looking at now, that was a discombobulating time. Tom brokaw, good to see you. Thanks. Turning, now, to the growing controversy surrounding embattled alabama republican roy moore. That Senate Candidate still defiant in the face of polls that show him losing ground. With the clock ticking to that december 12th vote, white house officials are weighing in on why the president is not campaigning for roy moore. We have two reports. Well start with Gabe Gutierrez in alabama. Gabe, good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. It has been 11 days since news of this scandal first broke in the Washington Post. This courthouse behind me is where one of his accusers, Leigh Corfman met him when she was 14 years old. This race had National Implications for the Republican Senate majority. And its become a flashpoint for a larger conversation, about Sexual Misconduct in politics. This morning, roy moores Senate Candidacy is deeply dividing alabama. Theres many, many people who are gravely concerned about his candidacy. Reporter three of the states largest newspapers urging voters to reject moore. This election has become a referendum on whether we will accept this kind of behavior from our leaders, said the editorial appearing in all three. He will not step down. Reporter but moores wife and his core supporters are sticking by him. Im going to vote for moore. I think at least hes trying to do the right thing. But like all humans, hes probably had some mistakes in his past. Reporter overnight, the former judge tweeting, the elitists in washington, dont want christian conservatives in their club. So, theyre attempting to overthrow the sovereignty of the people of alabama. Alabamas governor, kay ivey, said sending a republican to the senate is important, even though she has no reason to disbelieve moores accusers. Governor, do you plan to vote for roy moore . Thats what i plan to do. To vote for the republican nominee, roy moore. Reporter moore has denied accusations from nine women, from inappropriate flirting to sexual assault. The most serious claims came from Leigh Corfman. She said moore took off her clothes and touched her. This is a former coworker that he says she told him about the encounter years ago. He tried things with her. He tried to molest her. And she wanted to confront him. She was afraid. And she didnt. Should roy moore resign, mr. President . Reporter President Trump has ignored questions about the scandal. Aides says he finds the allegations troubling. But believes its up to voters in alabama to decide for themselves. Thats probably the most common sense way to look at it. He doesnt know who to believe. I think a lot of folks dont. Reporter it is now 22 days until the special election. Roy moore has largely been ignoring his democratic opponent, doug jones. In his tweets overnight, he once again attacked Senate Majority leader, mitch mcconnell, taking his fight directly to establishment republicans. We will have much more on this subject when moores first accuser joins us for an exclusive interview right here. Going to turn to the white house, where President Trump spent the weekend lashing out at old enemies and making some new ones. Kristen welker has that part of the story. Kristen, good morning to you. Reporter hi, matt. Good morning to you. President trump will start the week by meeting with his entire cabinet later today. On the agenda, everything from tax reform to the crisis in north korea. But over the weekend, it wasnt policy he was focused on, but rather twitter battles. This morning, President Trump will try to put the focus on policy, when he sits down with his entire cabinet. This, after staying out of sight over the weekend, but not offline. Engaging in a twitter feud with the father of one of the three ucla basketball players, accused of shoplifting in china. It all started when lavar ball, the father of player liangelo ball, who thanked the president for freeing him i want to thank President Trump and the United States for the help they provided, as well. Reporter downplayed President Trumps role in freeing his son, in an interview with espn. Replying, who . When asked about the president s involvement. What was he over there . Dont tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out. The president firing back. Lavar ball, the father of liangelo is unaccepting what i did for his son. I should have left him in jail. Adam schiff slamming the president. Tweeting, how can someone in such a big office be so small . The president also lashed out online sunday at arizona senator jeff flake, who was caught on an open mic by a local tv station, warning the republican party. Senator jeff flaky, who is unelectable in the great state of arizona, quit race, anemic polls, was caught purposely on mic, saying bad things about your favorite president. Hell be a no on tax cuts because his political career, anyway, is toast. Flake, who has announced he isnt running for reelection in 2018, has yet to say where he stands on the gop tax proposal. All of it as the president revived his battle with his biggest rival. Beat thing, cooked hillary is the worst and biggest loser of alltime. Reporter congressional leaders are hoping the president will shift his focus back to tax reform today, after the house passed its version of the bill on thursday. Now, over the weekend, white house officials said theyre open to leaving the obamacare individual mandate in place instead of repealing it, which the senate bill calls for. Thats significant because the obamacare language is the biggest Sticking Point and could sink the entire tax reform effort. Late something for everyone in that report. Ships and aircraft from seven countries are scouring the atlantic, searching for this submarine. Officials believe the crew may have tried to make contact in a series of messages over the weekend, lasting just seconds. But since then, nothing. A desperate search for the missing submarine this morning, and the 44 crew members onboard. Leigh corfman was the first woman to come forward, alleging that she was 14 years old, when a 32yearold moore, a District Attorney at the time, sexually assaulted her. And leigh is here for her First Television interview. Thank you for having me. I can only imagine what the last few weeks have been like, when after 40 years you came forward and told a story publicly that you had never told before publicly. How are you doing . Im doing really well. I feel like a weight has been lifted. Ive had huge support, which i cant say how important thats been. And i had a lot of people that came out and said that because of my carriaourage, they were ao do the same. I know details are difficult. But for those who arent familiar, with you tell us your interactions with roy moore. You were 14 years old. Youre sitting with your mom. He walked up and introduced himself. And he called you up himself. For a date . It wasnt a date. It was a meet. At 14, i was not dating. At 14, i was not able to make those kind of choices. I met him around the corner from my house. My mother did not know. And he took me to his home. After arriving at his home, on the second occasion that i went with him, he basically laid out some blankets on the floor of his living room and proceeded o to seduce me, i guess you would say. And during the course of that, he removed my clothing. He left the room and came back in, wearing his white underwear. And he touched me over my clothing, what was left of it. And he tried to get me to touch him, as well. And at that point, i pulled back and said that i was not comfortable. And i got dressed. And he took me home. But i was a 14yearold child, trying to play in an adults world. And he was 32 years old. What did you think in that moment . Did you think, i was just molested or assaulted . Or did you not really think about it in those terms . I dont know that i really thought about it in those terms because it wasnt part of my vocabula vocabulary. I had been reading harlequin romances for years at that point. And i was expecting candlelight and roses and what i got was very different. Did you tell anyone at the time . Right after it, i told two of my good friends. And then, i told one other. And they told me how bad of an idea this was. To be with an older man like that . Right. And we werent prepared for that. When he called again, i didnt go. I made an excuse and i didnt go. How do you think that interaction affected your life . Well, it took away a lot of the specialness of, you know, interactions with men. It took some trust away. It allowed me to delve into some things that i wouldnt have otherwise. It took years for me to regain a sense of confidence in myself. And i felt guilty. I felt like i was the one to blame. It was decades before i was able to let that go. You speak of decades and it has been decades that you held this secret. There will be people watching who say, why now . Why not bring this up over the last few years . Particularly when roy moore, who was a rising star in alabama politics, ran for election, was a chief justice of the supreme court. And they say, it doesnt add up. Why wait . How do you respond to that . Its very simple, really. I did tell people. My family knew. Family friends knew. My friends knew. I spent a lot of time every time he came up, railing against him and what he had done to me when i was 14 years old. My children were small. I was a single parent. And when youre in that situation, you do everything you can to protect your own. And i sat in the courtroom in the courthouse parking lot and thought, you know, im going in. Im going to confront him. Years later, you thought about it. This was 2000. 2001. And i wanted to walk into his office and say, hey, remember me . You know, you need to knock this stuff off. I need to go public. My children were small, so i didnt do it. The second time, i actually sat down with my children, who were then junior high and elementary school. And i told them an overview and gave them the ability to make the decision. They were afraid that, with all of the social connections, they would be castigated in their groups. You had to tell your kids something about what had happened. Right. We decided together we wouldnt do it at that time. So, when the Washington Post sought me out, i didnt go looking for this. This fell in my lap. It literally fell in my lap. And i had to make a decision. And i told them that, at that time, the reporters who were all just wonderful to me, that if they found additional people, that i would tell my story. And they found those people. A couple things, roy moore denies the allegations. And further, says he does not even know you. I wonder how many mes he doesnt know. Kayla moore, roy moores wife, has suggested some of the accusers, she didnt name you specifically, that some of the accusers were paid. I have to ask you, were you paid or compensated in any way, by any entity for your story . Absolutely not. If anything, this has cost me. I had to take leave from my job. I have no tickets to tahiti. And my bank account has not flourished. If anything, it has gone down because currently, im not working. When you think about, in a sense, what you started. Yeah. You decided to come forward. And since then, eight other women have come forward. Right. What did you think when you started hearing other stories . Can you describe that feeling . Is it relief . Is it fury . Is it joy . I think its a combination of all of those things. My sorrow that others have had to go through this. But heres the beauty of what has happened. The support has been amazing. Women and men have come forward to tell their stories, that have never had the ability to do so. Because of my courageous actions. I want to put a picture up of you at 14 years old. A lot of people have seen this photo now. Right. When you see that young lady, what do you think . What goes through your mind . She sure did have a lot of promise ahead of her. And she didnt deserve to have a 32yearold man prey upon her. One final question for those who might be watching thinking, what are your politics . My politics. Well, ive voted as a republican for years and years and years. But this isnt political for me. This is personal. This is very close to my heart. And ive lived with this for a long time. His trial was at the time the trial of the century with members of his cult becoming a spectacle, with wild displays of support. And we heard from tom brokaw, describing earlier, one was arrested for trying to assassinate gerald ford. But manson was not assassinated. California abolished the death penalty. He came close again to incarceration when an inmate lit him on fire with paint thinner. Over the years, manson gave wild interviews in prison, showing no remorse and saying he should have killed more people and proclaiming himself the devil. Now, his death bringing closure to a dark chapter of his murderous cult. But theres many manson family cult members alive in prison. So far one member directly involved in the murders has been paroled, and another has recently been recommended for release. That recommendation is now in the hands of the governor of california. The man is an undocumented immigrant who Authorities Say shot and killed steinly on pier 14 in july of 2015. During the trial, garcias attorneys admitted he fired the gun but say the shooting was accidental. Prosecutors argue garcia intentionally shot and killed steinly. The case sparked nationwide debate about the relationship between sanctuary cities and federal immigration agents. Happening now, our pete is at the courthouse.
