Democrats. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] senator ron johnson yesterday became the first gop senator to announce that he will not support the republican tax plan. Paul ryan called it a real kick in the where his balls should be. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] President Trump met with republican lawmakers in the basement of the capitol today just before they voted on the new tax reform bill, and nobody was more excited to see them down there than eric. Welcome to my basement, father [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] father come. The bucket is a chair. [ laughter ] President Trump delivered a statement at the white house yesterday about his 12day trip to asia. Said trump, it was so cool. They eat with these crazy what do they call it . Theyre really weird. Ive never seen them before. Oh, right. Napkins. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] President Trump reportedly joked to House Republicans today that he only likes between 30 to 40 of them. Dont worry, he says that all of the time, said his kids. [ laughter ] am i in the 30 to 40 father . According to a new study, sweat might one day be used to unlock smartphones. So get ready to all be hacked by steve bannon. [ laughter ] Maryland Police are searching for a woman caught on Surveillance Video climbing into a Mcdonalds Drivethru window and helping herself to a soft drink before leaving with a box of stolen items. Police describe the suspect as the mcdonalds customer who can still fit through the drivethru window. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] according to a new study, a focus group of women who voted for President Trump in the 2016 election are now embarrassed by his childish behavior. Even worse, this was the focus group. [ laughter and applause ] and finally, an ancient pottery vessel recently discovered in the nation of georgia provides evidence that humans drank wine as early as 8,000 years ago. It was previously thought the earliest anyone ever drank wine was during the today show. Congress has been rocked by its own Sexual Misconduct allegations this week with senator al franken being accused of Sexual Harassment. Yet more women coming forward to accuse Alabama Senate candidate, roy moore, of sexually assaulting them as teenagers. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth the avalanche of Sexual Harassment allegations in the last few weeks has shown us that predatory behavior is everywhere in virtually every aspect of society. In the news business, in entertainment and in politics. Every day, there are more revelations and this week we started to get a sense of just how pervasive Sexual Harassment is in congress, too. There are two members of congress, republican and democrat, right now, who serve, who have been subject to review, or not have been subject to review, but have engaged in Sexual Harassment. These harasser propositions, such as are you going to be a good girl to perpetrators exposing their genitals, to victims having their private parts grabbed on the house floor. Seth that is awful. Id say congress is full of dicks, but most of them look more like ball sacks. [ laughter ] and today we also learned yet again as if more evidence was needed, that this is not a partisan problem. There are sexual harassers of all political persuasions in both parties. Take minnesota senator al franken. Today an anchor for kabc in los angeles said senator al franken kissed and groped me without my consent during a uso tour in 2006 and shared this photo of franken groping her while she was asleep. That is horrifying and she is wearing army gear because its a uso tour, but honestly, who could blame women if they started wearing military gear whenever theyre around men . Where are you going in a helmet and a flak jacket . The subway. [ laughter ] this is a pervasive problem that affects every aspect of society and every Political Party and everyone should be held accountable from al franken, to roy moore, to bill clinton, to the current president of the United States. And yet amid all of this, there are still republicans defending moore, their nominee for senate in alabama, who, of course, has been accused of sexually assaulting underage girls. Take, for example, alabama congressman, mo brooks, who said he still plans to support moore because the conservative agenda is vastly more important than contested sexual allegations from four decades ago. An abc reporter tried to ask brooks if he believes the very credible accounts of the women who accused moore of Sexual Assault and brooks literally ran away from him during the interview. [ indistinct chatter ] [ shoes tapping ] seth bad day to wear my tap shoes. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] id tell mo brooks to go to hell, but it looks like thats where hes trying to get. [ laughter ] that whole scene reminds me of the m. C. Escher drawing titled the chicken [ bleep ]. [ laughter ] of course part of the reason republicans are so desperate to ignore questions about moore is that even the ones who say they believe his accusers cant explain why they dont also believe the women who have accused President Trump of Sexual Assault. A reporter for the Huffington Post valiantly tried to get wyoming senator mike enzi to answer that question, but enzi wouldnt budge. Im working on taxes right now and concentrating on that and heading to a meeting where i have to speak and thats what im concentrating on. Enzi said, walking quickly down a senate hallway. Asked if he has any thoughts at all on the moore scandal, he replied, my thoughts are on taxes, if you want to talk about taxes. Okay. Do you want to tax roy moore asks huff post . [ laughter ] enzi he said nothing and walked away. [ laughter and applause ] youve got to admire youve got to admire the Huffington Post effort. Reporters should just keep doing that until republicans answer the question. Look, i just want to talk about building a wall. Okay, should we build a wall between teenagers and roy moore . [ laughter ] a reporter for nbc news similarly tried to get an answer about moore from arkansas republican senator, tom cotton, with no luck. Heres that transcript. Do you think that roy moore should drop out of the race . No comment. Do you have any comment at all about his alleged no comment. Do you support his candidacy . No comment. Elevator doors close. [ laughter ] so technically, the elevators had more to say in that transcript than tom cotton. So hey, elevator, do you think roy moore should drop out . [ laughter ] [ applause ] the refusal by many republicans, including the president , to discuss moores situation comes as we keep getting information about how creepy his behavior was. Earlier this week, it was reported that moore was actually banned from the gadsden mall and the ymca. He got banned from the ymca despite dressing exactly like one of the village people. [ laughter and applause ] now yesterday on msnbc, moores lawyer, Trenton Garmon tried to dispute the claim that roy was banned from the mall, but in the process, he seemed to confirm that there were indeed complaints about his behavior. I was engaged in litigation with the gadsden mall, it had a settlement that was confidential. I am intimately familiar there were procedures inside the gadsden mall and there from what i have been told, is never been a list with roy moore banned from being at the mall. So they processed that out and they determined, no, whatever it is that someone has said has made them uncomfortable, we dont find it to be worthy to put them on a list. Is it not cause for concern that there would even be any sort of settlement with the gadsden mall . Roy moore was in his 30s. No what type of settlement sure. No, maam. No, there was not a settlement with roy moore had nothing to do roy moore has never had a settlement with the gadsden mall. Im talking about my personal experience as a litigator. I have represented people against the gadsden mall. Seth wait, youve been a lawyer in other cases of people v mall . [ laughter ] so i guess even banned from the mall and need a lawyer, Trenton Garmon is your man. [ laughter and applause ] but the weirdest part of the interview that moores lawyer gave to msnbc came when he tried to defend moores claim that he always asked for permission from a girls mother before dating her. Garmon tried to argue that that kind of behavior was common in other cultures and threw in some gross racism when he tried to cite msnbc anchor ali velshis background to bolster his case. Why would he need permission from any of these girls mothers if they werent under age . Theyre not under age. Sure, thats a good question. Culturally speaking, i would say theres differences looked up alis background there. Wow, thats awesome that you have got such a diverse background, its really cool to read through that, but point is this what does alis background have to do with dating a 14yearold . Im not finished with the context of it. Well, please answer. The point of it is this what does ali velshis background have to do with dating under children. 14yearold girls . Sure. In other countries, theres arrangements through parents for what we would refer to as ali is from canada. Consensual marriage so ali is from canada. [ laughter ] seth so either Trenton Garmon is a racist, or he thinks canada has arranged marriages. And yet in spite of all this damning evidence about moores predatory and grotesque behavior, trump still has said nothing about what moore should do. In fact, yesterday, he spoke at the white house about his trip to asia and completely ignored questions about moore from reporters. America is back. And the future has never looked brighter. Thank you, god bless you and god bless the United States of america. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you all. Should roy moore resign, mr. President . Do you believe [ talking over each other ] should he resign . Seth if the future is so bright, why do you look so bummed out walking away . [ laughter ] so everything is great and theres nothing to be upset about. [ laughter ] [ applause ] and while some republicans are desperate to ignore the questions, others are urging trump to take a stand. Like South Carolina senator, lindsey graham, who had this to say about moore. I met a lot of people in the mall and if youd get kicked out of the mall, thats a pretty bad situation to find yourself in. [ laughter ] i mean, i agree, but why have you met a lot of people in the mall . Ive got a booth. Its called lindseys nut hut. its mostly pecans. Those pecans are as sweet as old lindsey. This is a societywide problem born out of systemic misogyny and abuse of power. And both parties need to take it seriously, no matter who is accused. Dont you agree, congressman mo brooks . [ laughter ] this has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth well be right back with chris hayes [ cheers and applause ] announcer for more of seths closer looks be sure to subscribe to late night on youtube. victoria vo when i was twelve, i started volunteering for national parks. Michelle baptista, everyone [ cheers and applause ] thank you for a fantastic week. Great having you here. Our first guest tonight is the emmywinning host of all in with chris hayes, which airs weeknights at 8 00 p. M. On msnbc. Please welcome back to the show, our friend, chris hayes, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] seth thank you so much for coming up. Its always my great pleasure to commute the four floors up. Seth it is four floors up. And i do want to speak this is very noble of you because you do your show live. We are pretaping, so you actually have to leave here and go do your show. You basically have to give up an hour. A million things could happen in that hour. Yeah, i fully anticipate that the senate will be down to about 60 members by the time i get back down. [ light laughter ] seth youre right, yeah. The majority will be much less. One of the things that seems to be getting a little lost and sort of the more salacious things that are happening every day is the tax plan. House voted on one today. You have sort of talked about on your show that the math that the republicans are pushing does not quite add up. You know, twothirds of the tax cut is for corporations, right . Seth yes. And the idea the sort of sales pitch is were going to give it to ceos and corporations, theyre going to take that money and turn around and be like, you get a job, you get a job, new factory here, raises here. And the other day, gary cohn, economic advisor, is in a roomful of ceos, and someone says, raise your hand if youre going to give people raises and invest in Capital Investment and like no one raises their hand. Seth yeah, and he did it he was hoping that it would be a sea of hands. He even said, why arent peoples hands up . [ light laughter ] seth yeah. Its like, because its not going to work. Seth yeah. So its really a pretty crazy thing. It also is the case that if you look at the numbers, its a tax hike for a lot of middle income americans by the end of this thing. They passed a tax hike today. Which if youve got a republican member of congress and you live in an affluent suburb of new jersey, or california, or new york, what is the point of electing a republican if your taxes are gonna go up . Seth yeah. Like why are you doing it . Seth yeah, theres not a lot that the Republican Party is crushing it on, other than that. That is a thing you elect your republican congressman to go to washington and prevent from happening. Seth so does this speak to the fact that even though we have a president who ran on this real populist message and spoke to a lot people that no one had addressed before. And you have to give him credit for at least knowing that there was that voting block out there. But it seems like this is a tax plan that is written by the donor class. It is 100 donorclass driven. And thats not even thats not me saying. Lindsey graham says were basically toast to the donors if we dont pass this. Chris collins, who is a congressman, said like, weve got to do this for the donors. Theyve been very much theyve been saying quiet part loud about what the motivation for this is. And it really is what one senator said to me was donor maintenance. Seth wow, thats not great. That doesnt sound like a great [ laughter ] donor maintenance sounds like, its like youre grooming a pet or something. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] you know what i mean . Seth or a donor goes in and you put him up like on hydraulics and have to look underneath. [ laughter ] so i want to talk obviously, we have, you know, wave after wave of these Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault allegations. And the situation today with senator franken. Now, it seemed like the Democratic Party reacted a lot quicker to say this is not okay. Senator franken himself said that he would go in front of an ethics committee. He issued an apology two apologies today, i think. Maybe realized the first apology wasnt strong enough, came out with another one. On the other side, you have roy moore, who is not apologizing. Certainly more accusers on that side, as well. Yep. Seth is there a difference in how the parties are dealing with these situations . Well, i think there is, although its hard to say, because getting any apples to apples comparisons are tough, right . What al franken is accused is alleged to have done, and i dont even say alleged in a kind of protective way, but basically i think probably did. Seth yeah. Certainly theres a photo, which is not helpful. Is is terrible behavior that he should be held to account for. And is unacceptable. Its in a different category than what appears to be an alleged habit of serially attempting to groom, cultivate, pursue and sexually assault teenage girls. Which is what roy moore is accused of doing. And so i think, like, its hard to say, well, which party is doing this okay, because theyre just different fact patterns. The fact of the matter is, the Republican Party in mass, nationally, has basically come to reject roy moore. Mitch mcconell said, i believe the women. Jeff sessions said, i believe the women. The state party is standing by him. And the president is totally absent. I mean, donald trump has opinions on everything from the hr policy at espn to the levels of sufficient gratitude from ucl basketball players. Seth right . [ laughter ] there is nothing this guy doesnt have an opinion about. Seth yeah. He sits on fox and friends and live tweets everything. Seth yeah. But on the question of whether the person credibly accused of serial Sexual Assault and molestation of teenage girls should be your partys nominee seth yeah. Is this do we think this is a case of whatever he says will lead immediately to a followup question of how it relates to the accusations against him. You know, it was so indicative to me they want to have nothing to do with this conversation today when they didnt take the bait on franken. Seth yeah. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is up at the podium, she gets asked a question about franken and she says, well theyve called for an ethics investigation. You know, we support that moving right along. And you can tell, usually that is a hit theyre happy to take. Seth right. Right . Like usually that is red meat from that podium. The fact that she just sort of shut that down and moved on suggests to me that they understand that what is happening societywide means that nothing got definitively litigated a year ago when between more than a dozen women came forward to say that donald trump had made unwanted sexual advances or sexually assaulted them. Seth and do you think that we have also moved on too quickly from those accusations or is it just that so much happens in the Trump Presidency that its impossible to keep things on the burner, so to speak . Thats a really good question. I think there is some degree to which we have moved on too quickly from them. I also think there is a connection, and this is not my insight. This is a lot of feminist writers who i admire and have been reading. That there is a connection between he essentially got away with it, and the moment were having now. The reckoning now. The tsunami. The crashing of all of these pentup secrets and rage and righteous indignation of what people women have had to bear. And not just women, men, too, as were learning in the case of kevin spacey and others, that that that is connected to what happened a year ago. That watching him watching that access Hollywood Tape come out, watching women come forward and say, he did this to me. And watching him call them liars. Watching him joke that they were too unattractive for him to want to go after. Threatening to sue them. And get away with it is what part of what has triggered the moment were in now. Seth you have talked about [ cheers and applause ] i agree. That we maybe have have done ourselves a disservice of adapting to how outrageous and shocking the news is every day. That weve lost our capacity to be shocked by it. You know, the incredible super power of human beings is that they can make things normal. Their adaptability. Right . Whats the species that can live in the amazon and the arctic. Right . And the reason is, were very good at just being, like, well, its cold all of the time. Were going to build an igloo and were going to hunt some whales. Were going to get through. And so because that is the human being super power, that is the essence in some ways of being a human, you adjust and acclimate to whatever situation you find yourself in. And so the president goes on twitter and says, i am in front of all of you, officially instructing my attorney general to open an investigation of my chief political rival. Like, no, you cant do that. Seth right. If you did that in secret and we found out about it, that might be impeachable. If barack obama did that, it would probably be impeachable. But because were sort of acclimated like, oh hes tweeting again. [ light laughter ] seth yeah. Like he it is amazing in some ways what we are able to acclimate to. Seth well, the other thing thats amazing is it seems like its not just people who are critical of the president and sort of on the opposing side, it seems like people within the president s inner circle also say, hey, you cant listen to what he says or writes or does. [ light laughter ] like, thats thats not fair to take him at his word. Hes full of [ bleep ]. [ light laughter ] like, dont you think thats what theyre saying . It is so yes, in fact and i actually think my one of my theories about the man is that in some weird way, i think we think of him as avaricious and and ambitious and he wants to be powerful. I think its the opposite. I think what he actually wants is the trappings of the office, but he mostly wants to be a guy livetweeting fox friends. Seth yeah. I dont think he actually in a weird way, i dont think he wants the responsibility. Like he wants to be the guy at the bar that everyone has to listen to. Seth yeah. And i think he likes living in the oval office. But when its like, hey, sir weve got a tough decision to make here about what were doing in north korea. Its like, i would rather live tweet fox friends. you know what i mean . So its like, not only do his defenders say well, thats just him talking, in an own way, like he doesnt seem to care about what actually happens in the world. What he cares about is that the attention is on him. Seth so you think if we just let him like take the oval office and like remove it and like roll it to new york [ light laughter ] truman show it. Seth and he could do a podcast . [ light laughter ] yeah. If you gave if you gave donald trump a podcast, he would be so happy. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] and the world would be such a better place. Seth i would love it. [ laughter and applause ] i would listen to a donald trump podcast. [ cheers and applause ] a podcast seth all right. Well, i guess we just pitch it to him and see what happens. [ laughter ] sir, we need about 30 minutes of your time. Well be right in and out. Seth thanks so much for being here. Its always a pleasure. Have a great show tonight. Always a pleasure. Thanks a lot, man. Its so nice to be sort of welcomed like that. Seth oh, yeah. Isnt it great . They do it for me every night. Its fantastic. [ laughter ] really helps you get out of the bed in the morning knowing its coming. I can imagine. Yeah. Seth ive been a fan of yours for a long time. I was a huge fan of four weddings and a funeral. Did you know, you look like hugh grant . Seth thank you for saying that [ laughter ] does everyone say that . Seth yeah. So then when that movie came out, people were telling me i looked like cause i actually had floppy hugh grant hair back then. Oh yeah . Seth and so i was trying to find someone who looked like Kristin Scott thomas. And there was no one at my school. Oh well. [ laughter ] seth yeah. It was very it was heartbreaking. I thought he should have ended up with you in that movie. I thought he made a bad choice. Me too, but seth yeah. But then, you ended up with ray fiennes. It all worked out fine. Yeah, its fine. Seth so a you originally were hesitant to play Winston Churchills wife, clemmie in this film, yes . Yeah. I felt in the beginning i mean, so many films have been made about churchill. And i have been asked to play clemmmie more than once. And i always avoided it, for a number of reasons. One of them being, i dont like playing people who really existed. Seth uhhuh. Because either you get it wrong, or you get it right. This its tricky. And then i met joe. And ive always been a huge admirer of joes films. I think theyre amazing. He has such a hes such a clever mixture of sort of beauty and really good sort of communication between people. I mean, hes very clever. So i wanted to work with joe and i read the script. The script was brilliant. And but it was a bit spare a bit sparse. I needed more. Seth for your role . For clementine . Yeah, yeah, yeah, so they made it a bit bigger. And i accepted. [ laughter ] [ applause ] seth thats good. Thats great. Youve got to stand your ground. [ applause ] but that is im glad you did that. Because she was she played a huge role in winstons life. Yes. Seth theres no Winston Churchill without her. I think so, yeah. I mean, she was very, very influential in his life. They were very well matched. They were both very well actually, they were both quite fragile characters, in that they both had terrible sort of mood problems. And they they fought a lot. We see some of that in the film. But they loved each other dearly. They wrote each other little notes every day and letters. Lots and lots and lots of letters but it was a very passionate relationship. And i think she kept him she kept him up when he was down and vice versa. They looked after each other. Seth i cant even imagine my wife and i writing each other notes. You probably text each other. Seth we text, yeah. But i mean, if there is ever anything written, its like, turn off the stove. [ laughter ] like, its very its never, like, lovely little drawings. Seth thats just wonderful. Also, for those who dont know that from the clip, thats gary oldman. I know. Isnt that amazing . Seth whos unrecognizable. Yeah, from sid vicious to Winston Churchill. [ laughter ] seth if Winston Churchill would probably roll over in his grave if he heard the same guy who played sid i think hed love it. Seth yeah, thats true. But you must be because of course, when you play Winston Churchill and youre gary oldmans shape, you have to go through a transformation. You you were spared that. I was spared that, apart from the hair. Seth yeah. And the wig and the but that was great fun. I loved that. Seth yeah. I didnt want to take that wig off every night. I wanted to keep it on and take it home. Seth thats wonderful. What a great thing. Because i imagine you lose a fair amount of your day having to get the wig on. It would have been nice to just sleep in it and wake up ready to go. I also want to ask, does seem you mentioned that there have been a lot of films made about churchill. Yet, even with dunkirk, which is where this movie concludes well, this is great actually that dunkirk and our film have come out in relatively short time. You see both sides of the coin. You see what was happening in france on the beaches and the terror of these men. And then you see the horrific decisions having to be made by one man on the other side of the channel. Seth why do you think it is that people are still drawn to the stories about Winston Churchill and stories about world war ii like that . Because i think in a world this difficult world were all in at the moment. You were just talking about various leaders. Seth yeah. We really wouldnt it be great if we had somebody like Winston Churchill . Seth yeah, i think its i think we like watching it cause we know how it ends. [ applause ] yeah, thats true. Yeah, its a relief. Seth yeah, thats the grand thing about every time you see a nazi in a movie, no matter how evil, youre like, youre going to get yours. You lived in paris for a long time. Yes, i still sort of do. I dont really know where i live actually. Seth you should write it on, like pin it on the inside of your jacket. Yeah, that way if you get lost they can just point to it. And youve actually done films, french films . Yeah, ive done a lot of french films. Im making a french film at the moment, actually. Seth is it not being bilingual. Is it hard making a french film . Seth well i guess is it do you feel like is the process any different for you . No, its exactly the same. The thing about the kind of films that i make in france the french Film Industry is pretty strong. And the french will make huge movies and then make little tiny movies. The kind of film that i make is generally the little tiny ones. And so youre making a movie and the entire crew is including the actors is sort of 28 people. And i love that kind of homemade feel. I love that. Seth is there more smoking on the set of french films . Actually, do you know what, i think theyve stopped doing that. Seth really . Yeah. Seth you had to fake smoke in four its not fake smoke. Those are the days when people smoked. Seth you dont smoke, do you . No, i dont smoke now. Seth but were you a smoker . Or did you have to learn to smoke . No, no, no, i smoked a little bit. I was a light smoker. I was one of those people who would smoke other peoples cigarettes. Seth okay, gotcha. So a mooch . You were a mooch is the term. [ laughter ] i loved the fact that fiona was a chain smoker. And i wanted her to have these, you know, really cool cigarettes. So we found this really beautiful packet, bright yellow, i remember. And they were irish i think. And they were unfiltered. But they made me feel so ill. And every time i had to and i was constantly lighting up. And, of course, when you are smoking, the first intake, when youre smoking a cigarette, the first one is the most powerful thing. And i just felt so ill the whole time i was making that film. And all that faking out the tobacco seth well, it didnt show. I want to ask about a photo. This is you met the queen. You have a title. What is your title . [ laughter ] im im all shy about it. [ laughter ] seth im sure its a lovely title. No, its lovely. Im dame kristen. Seth oh, dame kristen. Thats fantastic. [ cheers and applause ] and there you are. [ cheers and applause ] and is it true that she asked you what you were working on . Oh, she did, yes. She said, now i say, what are you doing . And i was about to go into rehearsal to play her. [ laughter ] so i had to say and so i explained that i was going to actually pretend to be her. And she looked at me sort of slightly, oh, well that will be a challenge. [ laughter ] seth well, im sure you were wonderful in that, too. Thank you so much for being here. Such a pleasure.
