Through most of your thursday. As we get a look in San Francisco more of a lighter rain. When we see the darker shades of green it shows where the rain is getting heavier. For san jose a bit of a break now that may last for a few more minutes but the rain will be closing back in. For the east bay seeing a lot of reds here, thats where the most intense rain is over a lot of contra costa and alameda counties. This will still be with us throughout much of the day as this system remains stationary and continues to sling lots of rain right in the middle of the bay area. I will talk more about this. Mike is tracking the tough driving conditions all around this morning. Thats right. Tough conditions. Look at the bay bridge, you see the rain coming down and then watch these cars as they come through the hov lane, you see that rooster tail, that water i can kicking up into the car behind them. Slick conditions, be very careful. We will look at your map. We had the backup at the bay bridge but on the maps we see that most of the freeways are showing a lighter flow, even the upper east shore freeway. The green thats where roadways will be slick but the ponding and puddling thats where it shows blue and its extending all the way over in toward walnut creek, concord and Discovery Bay, the north bay, san rafael and novato in San Francisco lots of ponding expected because that rain just hit. Also the san mateo hills but lighter traffic keeps things moving pretty smoothly, however, the south two major crashes, southbound 101 at shoreline this crash blocks a number of lanes out of palo alto and so chp has called a sig alert that means they think its going to take at least another half an hour for them to clear that. Its a tougher drive. North 85 has been a struggle as well that crash over blocking your right lanes has two separate crashes in the same spot. Cars were driving at a high rate of speed and hit a puddle. Those conditions are tough, folks, so slow it down. As you mentioned crash concerns across the bay area this morning because of the slick roads. Lets go right to nbc bay areas kris sanchez along highway 85. She is at the scene of the accident in which two cars lost control a short time ago. They are flipped upside down. Reporter they were flipped upside down and you heard mike talking about the backup. Good news is that there will be improvement soon because the tow trucks have now arrived. The first of those two vehicles that crashed after going too fast through a puddle, that one was just loaded up on to a flatbed truck and is about to drive away, you might even be able to hear the crunching sound of that second vehicle that is about to be uprighted and then towed away as well. So some traffic improvement but the cautionary tale here, folks, is that the chp says that speed was absolutely a factor in both of these crashes. Earlier this morning we did see how violent these crashes were and it is shocking to hear that only one person was transported with minor injuries because it seems like these both of these collisions could have been much worse. If speed is absolutely a factor that means you do have control over what happens on your commute this morning. If you slow down and drive safely for the conditions then you should make it to your destination okay. We have seen very red roadways, we have seen some pounding and the roother tailing where the water comes off the back of the tire in front of you, that makes it very hard to see. We have a higher profile vehicle so we are able to see, but if you are in a low profile vehicle you are going to have a tough time if you follow too closely and you wont be able to stop if you cant see. Kris sanchez. Today in the bay. People in the north bay their concerns are mounting for the victims of the wildfires as the storm plunge through the area. Firefighters trying to prevent landslides in the burn zones. Crews trying to stove the toxic ash from leaking into drainage pipes. Good morning, thom. Reporter good morning, laura and marcus. You can see they have been doing a lot of road on the road over the last couple of days trying to deal with sinkholes and other issues. The concern of course the fire swept through burning so many homes and taking life through here so quickly, it was so hot it caused a lot of damage, underground storm drains in the fountaingrove neighborhood one of the places that saw the most fire destruction were melted in the intense heat of those fires causes some sinkholes. The neighborhoods below us yesterday workers were creating channels with ditches and plastic she get to direct water away from homes as it washes downhill but people here have dealt with fires and floods before and with the forecast of heavy rain they knew what could be next. And now the rains are here and they talk about sinkholes and possible flooding and mudslides because of all the devastation. I hope thats not the case. The three houses here burned to the ground and then across the hill of course is where it really had the damage and if the mud comes what are we going to do to stop that . Reporter now, they have been sandbagging around the storm drains and Properties Around the neighborhood where we are right now this week to control the water and ash as it runs into the damaged system of pipes here. The county office of Image Services is also telling folks if they do see the water backing up, see other concerns, mudslides, anything like that, call 911. They do have crews out here on stand by, on call who can respond almost immediately. Were live in santa rosa, thom jensen, today in the bay. Thank you, thom. Lets hope those people do okay up there. We want to bring in meteorologist kari hall now. Shes got a closer look at the rain totals so far in morning. And it was so heavy earlier, especially for the north bay, we still have a lot rain to go. The totals so far, guerneville almost 2 1 2 inches of rain there, petrolealuma 2. 25. Lafayette an inch and threequarters. Napa also about the same, kentfield over an inch, walnut creek close to an inch. Antioch and hayward seeing about a quarter of an inch, closer to a half of an inch in hayward tz it continues to fall. If you would like a closer look at the rainfall totals and weather updates follow me on twitter. Nbc bay area has a mobile app, its a great tool to use during this rainstorm. You can have access to our live radar and even get push notifications when that rain is approaching your area. It is free and you can download it and its available for iphone and android devices. I was laying in bed and i see on the news this guy escaped from hawaii and to san jose and the whole everything he told me and i looked up and i recognized his face and i was like, thats the guy that was in my cab yesterday. A wet commute across the bay area as we take a live look at our four major bay area bridges. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking this for days now. What can people expect as they head out the door this morning . Its going to be really soggy. We are seeing some of the heavier rain shifting off towards the east as weve seen the rain moving over towards vallejo and sole know county. As well in san jose a little bit of a break, you may be able to get a few sprinkles. Up toward oakland and concord, Discovery Bay it is really pouring. We may see an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain. This will linger throughout the day. More on that in just a few minutes. Mike is tracking the spinouts and some of the issues as you head out the door for the roads and the rails. The rain affects both the roads for traction and the conditions visibility and the rails as well as far as the traction and more. We will talk about that in one second. The blue creeping in more parts of the bay. That blue means ponding and puddling throughout san mateo, 280, 101 south of 92 as folks come across from 92 from hayward. Thats a building problem. The south bay shows continued issues for the crashes. South 101 has two lanes blocked at shoreline this is a backup from palo alto heading in toward Mountain View and eventually sunnyvale and santa clara. Your left lanes are blocked there. The other crash kris talked about hoping to make Good Progress as we saw them getting ready to clear the cars north 85 at winchester, two lanes are blocked and thats causing the big backup coming out of san jose. Notice the rest of the green on the sensors that blends in with the wet roadway index. Getting over toward the east bay we have a build for the upper east shore finally kicking in. Berkeley station the austin way opening has been closed because that sent trans is flooded. The trains are not affected for the schedule yet. Coming up next on today in the bay, we have continuing Team Coverage of the storm hitting the bay area. Twitter users are waking up this morning saying to themselves, hey, check, please. We will take a look when today in the bay continues. It is 6 15 as you get ready to head out the door its pouring rain for most of the bay area, starting to taper off in the north bay. As we get a look at our school day forecast for san jose you get the kids out the door and its going to be wet. Running to the car, running to the bus stop and the umbrellas needed as that rain continues even as they get out of school. Its going to be a school day. We will talk about whats ahead with the timeline of the rain thats coming up in five minutes. Here is video from pete who is stuck in the backup like all these folks, he is heading south on 101 trying to get to the crash. He is on his way over to the sig alert at shoreline boulevard. We are hoping to make progress, it may clear by the time he gets there but we are on the case. We are looking at wet roads and slick conditions and will track other issues for the south bay coming up. Stick with today in the bay for continuing coverage of the rain. You can actually see that rain pouring down there if you look closely. This is from overnight in dublin. He will show us the Current Conditions live in dublin this morning at 6 32. Until then you can follow him bobnbc. 616. Happening today a disaster from the last winter storms finally getting watched up. The moraga sinkhole is all fixed. Happening today an East Bay Church will reveal the repaired cross. Crews are completed repairs on the 90yearold bell tower cross at st. Joseph basilica in alameda. Storms combined with dry hot left the cross tilting and swaying to the side. Later this morning the cross will be unveiled and the church will hold a special blessing ceremony. 6 17. Twitter is taking that blue check away from some people on social media networks. The blue check verifies who you say you are on line but, scott mcgrew, its come to say so much more. It says that you are a person of note. But many people were also interpreting that blue check as some kind of endorsement from twitter. Here is ed lees twitter, now, this really is ed lee and he is a person of note and twitter has given him the blue check not because they always agree with him but because he fits twitters requirements but twitter is taking away some of those blue checks this morning. Some White Supremacists are waking up to find twitter has removed their verification. We are not going to show you their twitter accounts but its people like richard spencer. They are claiming censorship. They can still tweet just now blue check. Speaking of twitter, elon musk tweeted out a picture of a Tesla Semitruck he will show off tonight. The announce had been delayed to they could concentrate on making the model 3 sedan. Elon musk calls people who short tesla stock, quote, jerks who want us to die. Dow fell 138 points yesterday its biggest drop in two months, nasdaq down 31. Tech shops you paid a monthly membership and had access to welding equipment, a wood shop and sewing machines. The senate has killed off a plan to tax peoples stocks before they cashed out. Companies in the bay area hand out a lot of stocks. The bottom line is this morning its good news for our workers in the bay area. We will talk more about taxes as we talk about politics coming up in about a half an hour. The house could vote as soon as today. We will see what happens. 6 19. Microclimate weather coverage taking a live look at conditions in San Francisco and dublin as we are tracking a storm that is hitting the bay area pretty hard. We have already seen activity throughout the morning, accidents on the roads. This is going to stick around for some time. Its going to last pretty much all day for the south bay. For the north bay youre seeing the activity taper off. A few spotty showers. If youre seeing the rain now it will hang out for most of the day. Here is a look at the radar and this is a very slow moving system and thats the problem. There is still a lot more rain coming off of the pacific streaming right over the same areas as we go through the day. A closer look at San Francisco, some pockets of some heavy rain and then it kind of tapers off for a few minutes. Sevenday forecast also up at the bottom to of the screen showing you will have a chance to dry out over the next couple of days. We just have to get through today. We are seeing a steady rain coming down for the peninsula, south bay also seeing some of that rain closing back in on san jose so if you are getting a break in East San Jose from alum rock to willow glen it will be moving in over the next few minutes. We are getting a lot of heavy rain for the east bay, oakland moving up toward concord and over toward Discovery Bay. You can tell by the bright yellows, this is what the radar could look like through the rest of the day, showing pockets of heavy rain for the next several hours, a few breaks in between but not a lot here. Even as we go into this evening the sun will set and it will still be raining so we have extended the timeline of how long we will see this rain for the day, the south county will be dealing with this rain through at least early tomorrow morning and then it rolls out of here just in time to get our weekend started. We are taking a live look outside in kirkwood and the forecast a lot of snow here and the snow levels are starting to drop now, we will have the possibility of getting 1 to 2 feet of snow above 7,000 feet so if you are going there for the weekend, bring the emergency kit and the tire chains, its going to be rough for travel. We are going to see things clearing out here, our nbc bay area food drive on saturday at all local safe ways, hopefully you can come out and join us, weather will be perfect. We will be tracking a new storm for the end of the weekend into early next week bringing us more rain. Mike, you have some better news for las ga toes. Also updates for fremont. We are going to stick the control room just to the maps. We are looking over to auto mall parkway i just heard 2400 people remain without power, that power line that went down over near the auto center has extended over past 680 toward the mission area. Auto mall will likely have issues for those signals that will have a cuff drive. The freeways move pretty well because of a lighter volume of traffic but tough conditions, slick around the bay, the green shows wet roadways but 85 that roadway just got the all clear, all lanes clear now but slow. The recovery has to start back at 87 there. Southbound 101 the crash continues to be in lanes, pete suratos was on the scene or heading down to the scene south 101 at shoreline area, you are slow out of the palo alto area and heading down into Mountain View. The rest of your bay moves well but we do have that backup for the upper east shore freeway to be expected. Coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. A half billion dollars in refunds for people who feel they were scammed, we will tell you who is eligible and how to apply. Im consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next. Coming up next continuing Team Coverage tracking this storm hitting the bay area just as the morning commute is getting under way. That rain will be lasting for a little while longer, a lot while longer because its going to continue to stay right over these same areas. We are looking at the potential of getting an additional inch of rain on top of whats already fallen. A closer look at how much rain weve gotten is coming up next. Im bob redell, we will take you live to the trivalley where we have had rain on and off all morning long. Coming up, the impact on your morning commute. We re in a microclimate weather alert this morning. Right now its 6 30 on your thursday morning. We are in that microclimate weather alert a live look at our satellite radar this morning showing the storm hitting the bay area. Take a look at this new video into our newsroom this morning giving us a sneak peek of what you can expect when you head out the door this morning. This was taken in the Santa Cruz Mountains overnight. Today in the bay has covered all of this this morning and throughout the morning. We have crews scattered throughout the bay area showing you the conditions in your neighborhood. Good morning, thanks for joining us, im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. We want to head to meteorologist kari hall she has been tracking this storm for days now. You told us it was coming and now its hovering over us. Its slowed down which will cause higher amounts of rain across the bay area. Even as you look at the movement of this rain and where weve seen the heaviest rain its not pushing south so this will be with us through at least the next 10 to 12 hours and some of these areas that are just now starting to see the rain moving in. Weve seen pockets of heavy rain indicated by the yellow and reds but mostly a steady downpour in San Francisco. A few pockets of heavier rain moving through san mateo. Lighter as you move down the peninsula but its about to pick up for the south bay. Weve seen the heaviest rain through the east bay. We are still going to see this rain moving through as we will through the day. As we look at the timeline it does start to taper off for a north bay. A wet day moving into tonight. I will have a look at that in a few minutes but mike is tracking the nimitz. Today we call it the nightmare nimitz for this section. Blurry shot, a lot of water in the air and on the lens, a lot of brake lights up toward high street. You cant see specifically but you can see how the brake lights hover and then they start to move better at hyde. Thats where there is a crash in lanes jamming up conditions there. We will look at your map. Where kari showed where the radar traveled through look at all of this blue ponding and puddling in toward walnut creek, antioch, pittsburg, lighter volume for traffic as we approach the thanksgiving week we tend to see that on the thursday before. Some flooding reported but interstate 80 remains open for all lanes. As we move the map down we do see a pretty pleasant drive. 92 not too bad, relief for the south bay, all lanes southbound 101 they just cleared a few minutes ago. The other crash north 85 is recovering as well. There is a tough wet drive here. Talk being that Mountain View crash, pete suratos finally got there. What do you have for us . Reporter good morning to you, mike. As we do have this light drizzle in the Mountain View area we are on this overpay over 101 south, its your regular traffic, regular morning commute but a much different story when i tweeted out that cellphone video earlier. You can see the fire engine and one of the cars that was involved in that crash. As far as information on this its very limited but we know it involved three to four cars, i dont know exactly what caused it when you consider the weather this morning you have to assume that weather may have been a factor. Pretty much traveling nor a mile or two stretch and then it opened up, but in the past 15 or 20 minutes it opened up all the way, all the lanes that were blocked were reopened. We will continue to keep an eye on the conditions if any more crashes happen in morning we will update you throughout the morning as well as on my social media accounts. We are live in Mountain View, pete suratos, for today in the bay. Now to more live Team Coverage on this latest storm. We will take you to the trivalley. Bob redell is live in dublin. Weve already seen some accidents this morning, bob. Reporter fortunately we havent seen any here on westbound 580 in dublin just like by dublin bart but the fact that the traffic has been at the limit not slow and go all morning long, here we are on a thursday got to make you wonder if a lot of people are either working from home today or delaying their drive in just because of this weather. Here is some video we took overnight and you can see how bad it got in the trivalley area where you had gusty winds, lots of rain, lots of water, wet roads, its enough to be annoying for anyone who has to do that drive for work, especially if you have to go all the way into sf and it could be potentially dangerous. As you look out there live those are head lights westbound 580 through dublin approaching the 680 interchange. These are chings chp always reminds us of. If we havent had a big rain there will be oils and fluids on the roadway, once the rain comes it will make the roads slicker than you might expect them to be. Thats one reason why you want to watch your speed. You also want to make sure you are not tailgating, you are keeping a good distance between you and the car in front of you and perhaps most important of all you just want to be really, really careful out here when it says the speeds are 65 miles an hour thats the speed limit, remember, thats the recommended speed. The maximum speed when you are under safe conditions. These arent safe conditions. Maybe you want to go 55, 45, just something to keep in the back of your mind as you head into work this lovely thursday morning. Reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, today in the bay. Stay dry out there if you can, bob. Its 6 36. City of San Francisco trying to be proactive ahead of the latest storm and the entire rainy season. Crews are putting up temporary flood barriers in areas where flooding is most common, that includes 17 street and folsom in the mission district. Its part of a coordinated effort to prepare for the winter storm. Were tracking this mornings storms, we will have more live Team Coverage coming up. You can always remember to download our free nbc bay area app so you can see when the rain is moving into your neighborhood. This morning people in rancho tehama are trying to begin the healing process following the shooting rampage on monday that left five people dead. [ inaudible ]. So sad to see what the kids are having to relive. Hundreds of mourners attended the vigil in rancho tehama. The shooter injured 14 people before authorities shot and killed him. Among those who gathered yesterday the aunt of a sixyearold shooting victim injured in the Rancho Tehama Elementary School shooting. She says that the entire town is hurting. And its really painful that it hits home, you know, and it does hurt. It does. And during the vigil people were allowed to people at the microphone, some asking for prayers, others for unity, others spoke about pride they had for people of rancho tehama. Developing right now in florida, authorities are hoping that a new clue helps catch a serial killer. Police in tampa have released new video of the man previously called a person of interest in the shooting death of four people. Its quite haunting. The new video was taken near the scene of the latest shooting early tuesday. Investigators are now more certain this is actually the man behind the shootings. They are calling him the suspect even though he is yet to be identified. 6 38. Back to our microclimate weather alert coverage this morning. Taking a live look up in palo alto where it looks like traffic moving along, at least in one direction on your right, our live radar tracking the storm. Kari joins us now. Now, this is going to be a kind of sit and hover and pour over the bay area kind of storm. Yeah, it has slowed down. We will continue to see the rain rolling through throughout the rest of the day. At times the rain gets heavy and then becomes a little lighter with a few more breaks. As we take a look at how much rain weve already measured check out northwest of guerneville over 3 inches of rain there, some new updated rainfall totals just in. Petaluma had 2. 24. In San Francisco measuring over an inch. In pacifica starting to get closer to 2 inches when we have already had more than 2 inches in lafayette. Getting a look at napa. Two inches of lane there, kentfield an inch and a half, oakland an inch and threequarters. Walnut creek over an inch of rain there. Weve seen the rain moving through hayward a little bit more recently. More rain in antioch so i will check out that total as well. It will add up as we go through the day. I will have more in a few minutes. Mike is tracking all of the issues on the roads. Mostly spinouts, slick roadways, traction and visibility. Pete told us all lanes are recovering and we see that on the map southbound 101 at shoreline. Overall this is not bad for 6 39 on a thursday but we are looking at a slower drive for the south bay. Fremont i will give you more information in the next report but let me tell you 2400 folks are affected by this area that ive circled, thats where the power outage is right along auto mall parkway. I will talk more about that in the next report. I want to make sure we get to the wet roadways all over the bay, very slow from the coliseum. Coming up next on today in the bay were continuing our coverage of the top story this morning, this storm thats hitting the bay area. Keeping track of your life radar. Plus notorious killer Charles Manson rushed to the hospital. What we are learning about his condition this morning. In washington this morning it looks as if the house may pass the tax cuts. We will bring you up to speed when today in the bay continues. A soggy morning right now at 6 43. We are in a microclimate weather alert tracking the rain thats starting to close back in on downtown san jose. We have seen a steady shower in campbell. A live look outside all cloudy. Make sure you have all of the rain gear. Campbells temperature trend it says cool and rain continues into this afternoon and this evening. I will talk about when this rain gets out of here and how much more we could see thats coming up at about 6 49. Its not out of here yet and you are having a tough drive trying to clear north 880 at the coliseum its jammed up. The crash has cleared but you are very slow. We will talk about the conditions and more complications for fremont. As kari just told us the rain in the south bay will continue throughout the day and into the night. Thats raising new flooding concerns this morning. Today in the bays kris sanchez it live outside of los gatos with what you can do to prepare. Reporter if you live in a home that is prone to flooding chances are you found out last year that sandbags are a good line of defense. This is a sandbag station, this is for the folks who live in los gatos. I did link to that on my Facebook Page and there are locations for san jose, different locations in san jose, all of this from the sclarl valley water district. They are monitoring our streams to make sure that we are not reaching levels that are critical at this point. The rain just picked up. Earlier this morning you said it didnt look like it was coming down, its coming down now. We are probably soaked up to our elbows as were standing out here and i have to make a pit stop either at a laundromat to dry my photographers pants or get him rain pants. He is soggy. Live in los gatos. Be careful, the roads are very slick. I can tell from your jacket it is certainly continuing to pour or rain in that area. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking this storm behind the scenes all morning long. You can follow her kari hall weather on twitter for instant coverage. One of americas most notorious killers is in the hospital. Charles manson being treated for a medical issue, the severity is unclear. The department of correction Sergeant Scott lunger not confirming this because of privacy laws. This is a mugshot of Charles Manson taken late this summer. This is the second time this year Charles Manson has been rushed to the hospital. The 83yearold is serving life without had a role for a two night killing spree back in 1969. 6 46. The white house is carefully considering how it will react to the tax cut bill. Scott mcgrew, this comes as the white house tries to improve its optics. Its had a couple miss steps when it comes to tax cuts the house may vote as early as today. We know the president will rally republicans but will not have a party after the vote. You may remember the white house celebrated a bit too early in the healthcare fight, this was back in may, but then the senate didnt pass the bill and the plan collapsed. They will have a rally today but not a party. This tax plan the house has put together it will work in the senate, adds too much to the deficit for the senate to consider it under their reconciliation rules. Odd timing in all of this, the secretary of the treasury went to the bureau of printing and engraving to show off the new dollar bills with his signature on them. The picture is notable because of his wife. Her comments caused him all kinds of problems. This picture may not be what you want to show the day before your party votes on a tax cut for corporations. An odd moment with President Trump as well as he paused during a life broadcast to search for water. Now, normally it would sound like people are picking on him, i mean, its perfectly normal to have a sip of water during a speech. Theres no exception here. However, you remember donald trump bullied republican president ial candidate senator marco rubio about Drinking Water during his speech. Next time marco rubio should drink his water from a glass as opposed to a bottle. How do you feel about marco rubio . Drinks too much water. Marco rubio couldnt respond properly to president obama without pouring sweat and chugging water. He choked. The white houses choice of water is also interesting, its fiji water, fiji is bottled in fiji and shipped by container ship to the united states. So the president was talking about americas trade imbalance while he reached for his imported foreign made water. Each day we take a look at whats going on in the white house and with tax cuts. You can reach me on twitter for comment. Im scottmcgrew. 6 48. Lets go back to our microclimate weather alert this morning. Taking live look outside at the Current Conditions. You see san jose our lens covered with water there on the left and on the right a look at traffic moving along along 101 in palo alto this morning. Thats local bay area water. Going to bottle that. Tracking this rain as we go through the day, it will continue to pour and its going to stay with us for several hours even though in the south bay we have only see the rain for the past three to four hours at this point. Its going to be with us as we take a look live now in San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge it is just so soggy and dont expect this rain to let us anytime soon. As you check out the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen it shows by tomorrow this will be finally clearing out but look at all of this rain and im talking about the tap into some sub tropical moisture. Why . Because we can see the clouds extending well out in the pacific and all of this has to roll through the bay area before we can see some drier conditions.
