Great to be here. Seth congratulations on the film. You play youre reprising your role. Yeah. Seth of alfred the butler. Yeah. Seth but youre not very butlery in this. Youre very technologically savvy, your alfred. Yeah. Well, you know, we wanted to move on. When zack snyder took over, batman as director, we wanted to move on from the silver tray and the, you know, all of that business, and the washing up. And i i mean, the whole world is getting more technological. Seth yeah. But i wanted to i suddenly remembered going to dinner with John Paul Getty who i suppose is dead now. Just about two years ago. But he was a neighbor of mine in england, and immensely wealthy. I mean he was a heir to the getty fortune. Petrol, you know, gas. [ light laughter ] and he had a bob or two. I remember arriving in the car at his gate and somebody very kindly opened the door and i got out. My wife got out. They took the car away, parked it. And then i somebody opened the gate into the garden and i went through the garden. Somebody opened another man opened the front door. And i went inside. And there was another man who took my coat, took my wifes coat and another man who stood there with some champagne. I get champagne. And another man who opened the doors into the party. [ light laughter ] and i thought, you know, its wonderful. They were all exs. A. S. Seth oh, really . Yeah. Seth so thats like special forces . Yeah. Seth okay. They were all there to guard him. Seth oh. And i thought, thats my alfred. Seth oh, you wanted to be like an alfred whos yeah. Seth ex exmilitary. Thats right. Hes a guy who can sort of do anything. But also he can make you a cup of coffee. Seth oh, i see. [ light laughter ] but he has that history. I mean, in the movie, of course, the great thing about alfred is he doesnt believe in green screen. Seth oh, right. So you dont have to fight anybody thats not there. No. Seth you just work on a computer. Thats right. I dont have to fly, i dont have stand in front with sort of you probably know how they do green screen. But its very tedious for an actor. Wonderful effects. Amazing effects. But i dont have to do that. Im the guy at home. And im very pleased about that seth so you dont mind that youre in superhero movie. No. Seth and youre not doing any superhero stuff. No, no. [ light laughter ] seth youre basically googling because i know i know the underneath. Seth oh, okay. You know, underneath. Seth okay. [ laughter ] alfred is the superhero. Seth oh, i see. [ laughter ] i know that. Seth so we should go knowing yeah, yeah. Seth that the rest of its all just a show. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [ laughter ] seth alfreds the real guy. Yeah, yeah. Seth do you yourself, are you tech savvy . No. Seth okay. I know nothing about it. [ light laughter ] seth nothing about it. No. I can get emails. Seth oh, congrats and send them. Seth oh, wow, wow. [ laughter ] and i can i can do mobile phones. Seth all right. Yeah. Seth yeah, that is how they work so i yeah. [ laughter ] seth i was going to ask you can do mobile phones . Show me how they work. [ laughter ] but the other day i had to call down to the hotel. I was staying in a hotel. I had to call down to see how the vcr worked to get a dvd on. Seth okay. I couldnt do that. [ laughter ] seth wow. Yeah. Seth i mean, i would say the beginning is if it was a vcr, thats why the dvd wasnt working. [ laughter ] you you also, you know, we can see, you know, you and ben affleck were both in sort of regular clothes, but you dont ever have to wear the costume either. I dont. Seth is that great . Oh, its wonderful we shot in the summer. Seth uhhuh. You know, and theyre all very big people, apart from gal. Seth uhhuh. Who plays wonder woman. But theyre very, very big people, anyway, but then they wear these enormous costumes. Sort of great sort of rubber things, you know. Make huge. Which is sweltering. Seth yeah. Absolutely sweltering. And, you know, im sitting there in a shirt and sort of smiling. But they have to when they stop acting, they back up to this sort of machine and theyre plugged in and water, cold water is sent through the inside, through pipes, so its like a frigidaire. [ light laughter ] and it cools them down. I dont have to do that. Seth yeah, thats wonderful. [ laughter ] i wonder if the real batman has to do that. cause that makes him seem a lot less cool, too. Yeah, well, i suspect he has to do one or two things we dont know about. Seth yeah, thats true, thats a good point. Alfreds very cool. Very mysterious. But you, sir, take the cake. This is even better than bruce wayne. You have an actual castle that you renovated. What, about 20 years ago now . Did you i suppose it was, yes. Seth yeah. And here you are looking like a guy with a castle, and theres your castle in the background. [ laughter ] ha seth and thats your dog, right . Thats not just a dog they brought for the photo. No, thats my dog smudge. Seth okay, smudge. And so you you have this castle and what drew you to wanting this castle . Its in ireland. Its in ireland. Well, when i i have a cottage about, i dont know, 20 minutes away across the water. And we used to land on it when we were going in the boat. And wed stop there and wed climb it. It had been ruined, been built in 1458 and ruined in 1603 by the british. The last castle to fall in western ireland. And it was a ruin. And we climbed up with ropes and ladders against the top and sit on the top and admire the view. Seth you climbed up with ropes . Yeah, and others. Yeah. Seth oh. Sort of inside. There was seth oh, okay. It was all possible, you know. And i [ laughter ] seth its just scary. It sounds scary to me. Ah, well, you know. Seth all right, yeah. [ laughter ] and, you know, alfred. Seth yeah, right, right, right. [ light laughter ] and i thought i was getting a bit bored with some of the film work and i was doing, and i wanted a real challenge and i thought and the celtic tiger was beginning to happen in ireland. People were beginning to earn a lot of money and i thought somebodys going to buy that and theyre going mess it up. And i wanted it to be me. Seth oh, great. [ light laughter ] so i did. I bought it and i spent six years i stopped filming, and i spent six years bringing it back to life. Which was, looking back, i think the thing im proudest most of actually its a fantastic place. Seth oh, thats fantast i also cant tell you how happy i am, nothing in this world makes sense anymore. Im so happy that you have a castle. [ laughter and applause ] genuinely, i would be so disappointed if you were out here talking about a condo you bought. Well. [ laughter ] seth that just wouldnt that wouldnt fit what i think of when i think of jeremy irons. And you built a full castle because you actually you actually have a horsedrawn carriage. And this is you use this. Yes . Yeah. [ light laughter ] i call it i call it a cart. Seth a cart. A cart. Seth okay. Yeah. Now the horse is a wonderful horse. Seth is carriage too fancy . Is that yeah, kind of. Seth okay, got you. Yeah, yeah, of course. Well, i mean, castle, you know. Yeah. [ laughter ] the horse now, thats whinny. Seth okay. Whinnys the most wonderful horse, which ive only recently bought about a year ago. Shes a friesian. Seth okay. Shes from shes really an amazing horse. And the carriage i bought in france. Seth uhhuh. Or the cart. [ light laughter ] seth they called it a carriage to get you to pay a little bit more and then you yeah. Seth then you then you got it home and realized it was a cart. [ laughter ] i went well, i went over with a friend who was staying at a house in france and we had a trailer full of stuff that he needed. And on the way back there was an empty trailer. And i thought, i dont like that. Dont like empty trailers. So we went to this architectural salvage place in the middle of france and bought a very, very long table about sort of 20 foot long. Which was glorious. And that cart. Seth thats fantastic. And brought it back. And its one its one of the nicest ways to travel, you know. Because youre relatively slow. Seth uhhuh. Youre quite high so you can see above the hedges. And i have all my best conversations in that cart. Seth oh, really . Yeah. Seth do you often have companions with you . Oh, yeah, yeah. Seth go on long cart talks. I mean, i have my dog. I have my dog on this. [ laughter ] seth yeah. Thats smudge. Yeah. Seth does smudge one of your best conversations . Yeah. Shes great. Seth yeah. Shes great, shes great. Seth yeah. Okay, okay. Because she she always agrees with me. [ laughter ] she always seems interested. Seth gotcha. How do whinny and smudge get along . Do they get along . Pretty well, actually. Seth okay, yeah. Pretty well. Smudge is a little weary, because of the feet, the hooves. Seth yeah, sure. But she started eating grass. I mean, whinny will be there in the field having a bit of a nibble of the grass. Seth uhhuh. And smudge will go and watch and then start eating grass. And then whinny will suddenly move a hoof, and she darts away. And shes nervous about being trodden on. Seth well, i cant say i blame her. [ laughter ] i want to ask about this. You are of the many roles youve played, one you were known very well for is just your voice, scar in the lion king. Yeah. Seth and [ cheers and applause ] you the lion. Seth yeah. Youve said theres a live action lion king now. I know. Im f im waiting for the phone call. Seth yeah, i think. [ light laughter ] ive seen the casting. Youre not in it. Am i not . Seth no, its not you. [ light laughter ] you you choose to give me this news on National Television . [ laughter ] seth well, like, i thought, you know what, look, ill make him feel good about his castle, and then ill [ laughter ] but i have to ask do children cause again, i you know, i think its one of those things, lion king is a film that children are seeing every year now. Its not like yes. Seth its not like something only people grew up only with 20 years ago or whatever. No. Seth are children excited to find out that youre the voice of scar . Yeah, well, its their parents really. Seth uhhuh. You know, they come up to you and they say, oh, look, come here, come here. This is plays scar. And the child sort of goes [ laughter ] and then dad says, you know, give us a bit of the voice. And so i sort of cant remember the voice, actually. So seth you really cant remember scar . No, but i try and do something which, you know seth yeah. Is recognizable. And the child then hides behind the parent. [ light laughter ] and its wonderful cause it just keeps the kids away from me. You know, because otherwise they swarm all over you. [ laughter and applause ] seth thats great. What do you what do you have in there . This this is a this is a dog whistle. [ light laughter ] seth okay. Its very, very good [ laughter ] seth thats so [ whistle ] thats great. Can you hear it . Seth yeah. [ whistle ] there are obviously no dogs in here or theyd all be [ laughter ] theyd all be coming. Seth now what is that do you really use that to call the dogs . Well, its strange enough i dont. But [ laughter ] but ive always thought my son gave it to me for christmas two years ago. And ive always thought that it may come in useful. You know . Seth right. This is a pen. cause thats always useful. Seth right. Is it a dog pen or a regular . [ laughter ] its a regular pen. And because i still write things down, you know . Seth yes. Phone numbers. Now, see, i know people put them into their phones. Seth yeah. And i cant do that. I write them down on a bit of paper. And this is the bullet with my name on it. Seth oh, wow yeah. Seth so its always good to wear it around your neck so you know where it is. Seth okay, great. [ laughter ] so who gave you a bullet with your name on it . I cant remember. [ laughter ] seth well, hopefully a friend and not a foe. Yeah, hopefully. Seth um i cant tell you what a pleasure it was to have you here. Thank you so much, jeremy. It was very nice. Just taking it one game at a time, hoping for the best. Seth thats great. You know, those are my favorite coaching cliches. [ light laughter ] i dont have a crystal ball, is another. Seth yeah. I can control only what i can control. Thats about it. Seth uhhuh. It is what it is. Seth there you go. Wow, you spent a lot of time with those who give press conferences. Yeah, who dont say much without saying anything. Seth you because of the amount you work in the nfl, you find stuff that i feel like, other people wouldnt find. Yes. Seth you recently found so this is andy reid, the coach of the chiefs. Oh, yes. This is the current coach of the kansas city chiefs. Seth who is doing a wonderful job yes. Seth 63. Theyre having a great season. Yes. This is andy reid in the punt, pass and kick when he was a preteen. Seth yeah. This is before teenager. Right, yeah. Seth now, the photo here i want to start by just showing there he is. Thats preteen andy reid. Yes it is. Seth i want to show what the other kids with him looked like. Okay. Here we go. [ laughter ] seth and that kid it looks like in general he was, andy reid gotta jump. [ laughter ] yeah. Seth i would say if he didnt win that punt, pass and kick that night, something went wrong. I know. Then he would not be able to go back to grade school. Or Something Like that. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] thats real. Seth i want to talk about some of the teams that are doing well. But, lets start on the other side of that coin. Yeah. Seth the browns now have not won a game. Theyve been very bad for a few years. They have. So lets kick them while theyre down. Seth they seem to have no, i i dont want to kick even as a steelers fan, i want good things to happen for the browns. Okay. Seth i dont want them to go through this year after year. They seem to have a plan. It seems like they almost what tanking in the nba is, that theyre trying to do. Do you have any faith . Do people in the nfl have any faith that the browns are going to turn this around . No. Seth okay. [ laughter ] no. Just a hard no. No, i dont believe so. I mean, look, philadelphia fans [ cheers and applause ] yep, there we are. So, you know andy reid used to be that big. Seth yeah. So, philadelphia fans send them bouquets every day, cause they had an opportunity to draft carson wentz. Seth and they did not, yep. They thought that he wasnt even a top 20 talent. Seth yeah. In the National Football league hes currently the quarterback of the 81 philadelphia eagles. Seth yeah, possible mvp i would say. He looks great. [ cheers ] yeah, he looks great. Had a chance to draft Deshaun Watson this past year. And before he seth yeah. Everybody loves deshaun. Seth all right, one woman does. Well, one lady does. [ light laughter ] either from South Carolina or houston seth right. And so, he looked spectacular before he had an unfortunate knee injury. Browns had a chance to get him. Didnt so were still waiting. Seth yeah. Were still waiting on the browns to try and have a plan. Its nice of you to say that they have one. cause were all were all eager to see it. Seth so you go you do thursday night games. Yeah. Seth youre headed to pittsburgh. Going to pittsburgh, p. A. Seth youre going to steelers titans tomorrow. Yes. And i will be outside right near the confluence. Seth uhhuh. The three rivers. Seth there you go. Right when the sun goes down, how cold do you think its going to be . Seth do you know . You must know. Whats it supposed to be tomorrow . Its supposed to be a high of 40 and a low of 29. Seth thats thats all right. Im rounding up to 30. Seth youll be fine. Theyll probably give you a nice heavy coat, right . We do get like an electric blanket if we want. Some cocoa some warm cocoa. There is cocoa in seth whats the coldest youve had . Have you had any brutally cold ones . Oh, my god. Yeah. Weve been in subzero temperatures. Last year in kansas city as a matter of fact kansas city and the seth uhhuh. And the Oakland Raiders played in freezing temperatures. Seth when youre that cold are you actually even paying attention to the game or do you just when it cuts to you, are you just making stuff up . I actually look like Jack Nicholson in the shining. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] thats what i look like towards the end. Just staring right at the camera having nothing to say seth you coach is it your sons soccer team . Yes. Seth okay. Yes. Seth so you were a coach of your sons soccer team. How old is your son . My son is six. Seth okay, great. Yeah. Seth so tell me, what is the philosophy of a 6yearold soccer team . I have three rules. Seth okay. Have fun. Seth great. Good opener. Number two is celebrate with your teammates. Seth all right. Because i dont want them running around like Christian Laettner just beat kentucky. You know running around and they take seth gotcha. You know, they just take a trip by themselves. And then also respect your opponent. Seth uhhuh. And cause, you know, kids on occasion, wont do that. And its funny, i do a podcast with my wife every week. My wife suzy who spent many many years as a sport reporter, we do a podcast. So we had jim harbaugh, the coach of my michigan wolverines. Seth uhhuh. Theres no applause there, which really upsets me. [ light laughter ] anyway, so i told him these three rules. And i was so excited to tell the coach of my alma mater these three rules. And i told him. And i was waiting to get the answer i wanted to hear back. And he just pauses and goes, you guys must be getting whipped every single day. [ laughter ] and im, like, theyre six. Theyre six. Theres no scoreboard. Seth okay, well come clean. How are they doing . Were getting our ass kicked. [ laughter ] every day seth so you guys so the name of you and suzys podcast is not just sports . Not just sports. Seth not just sports. You do a podcast. And there are times, because of your schedule, you cant be there. She does it alone. Are you ever jealous when you guys will get a a list guest. Yeah. Seth and youre not there . Yeah, well, she has filled in for me on my daily show that i do on audience. Shes filled in for me. And one time when she filled in, she got shaq. cause she used to cover the lakers. Al michaels. Because were good friends with al. And then all of a sudden, we get a call. Peyton mannings available for that day. And okay, nice round of applause for peyton. [ light laughter ] i just love it. You never do you know when youre going to get any round of applause . Just by saying any particular name . Seth i dont know any of those qualify as a round. [ laughter ] a semicircle of applause. Seth yeah, exactly. But anyways, so my wife calls me up. She says, honey, is it okay if i book Peyton Manning instead of him calling in next week . And im like, yeah, but damn, that sucks. [ light laughter ] seth yeah, you missed it all. Its very rare to have those spousal, sort of, moments about a tugofwar over Peyton Manning. But i guess thats the life we live. Seth there you go. [ light laughter ] look any what spouse hasnt hugged Peyton Manning between their fellow spouse . [ laughter ] it just happens. He comes between marriages. Thats a rhetorical question. Seth yeah, exactly. So, i want to ask its been a very strange year in football. Because i think a lot of people like you who love the game and want to cover the game yeah. Seth all of a sudden, politics has been a huge part of the nfl this year. Many have said to its detriment. Has it been frustrating being in a position where you want to talk about the sports of it to also have to balance it with sure. Yeah, cause you know, i have a twitter account where anytime Something Like this comes up, i get the stick to sports, stick to football, stick to something other than the fact that you have a mind of your own to actually speak on something. Which is what i view these players who are taking a knee before games during the National Anthem. That they are having a moment to try and bring attention to an American Experience that maybe not everybody is aware of. [ cheers and applause ] and yet, at the same time at the same time, its fine that when i go to a game and my kids are there i make them stand and put their hand over their heart and take their hat off and stand for the National Anthem just in the same way. That thats what i want to do. The players are doing this not to be combative towards First Responders or the military. But rather to call attention to something that they want to have changed. [ cheers and applause ] you know, i have met members of the military who say, thats why i fought. Ive met members of the military who are offended. Ive met people who are fine on either side. And just having a conversation is what i think this is the most important thing. Seth do you think that because ive watched a lot of panels, with people like yourself, excoaches, exathletes having conversations about this, conversations that i had not seen before on these kind of shows. Do you think those conversations are getting through at all to people . Or do you think people are so angry at one side or the other theres no sort of amount of conversation . I think its both. And it think its its both. I think there are some people who are hearing this and understanding that there is a larger picture that the players are trying to draw attention to. And then there are others who just are saying theyre turning the sets off. And to me, theyre missing some really great football. Seth yeah. Quite honestly, but, you know, thats thats something i have seen for years. Is that theres always going to be something from outside the football world that takes roots seth finds its way in. Right, that finds its way. In this case, having a National Conversation about it i think, is fine. Seth i want to ask you about this as well. Youre not just a sports guy. You do a lot of stuff. You were an actor in an episode of csi. Yes. Well, i mean i would think in quotes an actor. Seth well, no, you got a check. So you are [ light laughter ] this is great. Seth cause you posted this recently. Who did you play on csi . I think i played reporter. Seth reporter. Yeah. Seth oh, i remember. You were great. Or or host. Yeah, it was great. Our next guest is a 2016 t. E. D. Fellow and the founder and ceo of callisto, an Online Platform designed for College Students to confidentially report sexual assault. Please welcome to the show jessica ladd, everyone. [ cheers and applause ] seth im so happy youre here to take some time to talk us tonight jessica. Thanks for being here. Thank you for having me. Seth so, you created this Online Platform, a way for people to report sexual assault. This you were drawn to this professional path from personal experience. Can you talk a little bit about that . Yeah, absolutely. So in college, i was sexually assaulted by a friend of mine and over a year later i decided to report my assault. I ended up finding the process of reporting to actually be more traumatic than the assault itself. As i began to tell friends about this, i realized i wont the only one, that so many of my friends had experienced the same thing. So callisto for me, is the way that i give that meaning and make it matter. Seth and so how does the reporting that you do via callisto, different from what you had to go through when you reported it . So going in in person can be so scary, so intimidating. Youre going in, youre not sure if the person is going to believe you or not. And often youve waited a while before you decide to report. So that makes it even scarier. And we put out a system thats really designed to meet survivors where theyre at. And we allow them to just say what happened to them time stamped, if they want. Or they can report electronically to their school at the time and place thats safest for them. Or they can decide to just save what happened to them right now and report electronically if Something Else names the same assailant. So if they dont want to come forward unless its a repeat perpetrator, we give them the information they need to make that decision. Seth it seems like what weve heard so much in the last few months with people coming forward is there were people who were too afraid to report. And there were also many cases of people who reported it, and then it was not dealt with in a way that was satisfactory. How do you build out that element of trust that must be so important for people when they make this choice to actually say what happened to them . So trust is essential to everything that we do. So we make sure that our system is really by survivors for survivors. Weve put in a lot of research. Weve interviewed over 100 College Survivors about their experience and what they want. We make sure everything were building out is designed to allow them to make the choice that is right for them. Its not designed to say you should report it. You should do this. Its designed to say lets give you the information and options you need to make the decision thats right for you. Seth youre at 12 universities right now. How do you choose the universities . Or is it a case of the universities choosing callisto . How do those relationships start . Its a combination. And often its because of students or alumni who are really advocating to bring it to their campus. In the case of stanford, the Student Government passed resolutions asking the schools to adopt. And the administration was also excited about that partnership. So we try to partner with administrations that actually want to create change on their campus. Seth and this is not just for women, correct . This is also for any this is for men. This is for transgender students, gay students. Yeah, absolutely. So, 84 of our users are cisgender women. But the rest are other genders. We know it can be as hard as it is to come forward as a woman, it can become even harder. Theres so much more stigma if youre another gender. Seth there seems to be this moment happening right now where you see the strength in numbers of people coming forward. And sadly it often seems like there needs to be multiple victims of the same perpetrator saying that this happened for us to believe it. Do you, is this do you feel like you harness the power of numbers with callisto . And do you think thats key to this whole process moving forward . I think it can be. I think with my own assault, the reason why i wanted to come forward was to protect my community. And that was my primary motivation. And for a lot of victims, its not worth it. The math doesnt checkout. Its not worth the risk to come forward unless you know that youre not the only one. And unless you know that somebody else wants to come with you. Because then youre more likely to be believed. And its more likely that your perpetrator is going to be held accountable. So i think the change that were seeing right now, its not that just that survivors are speaking. Its that were listening. Seth thats wonderful. And i feel like, key to the whole process. Callisto, how did you come up with the name . I feel like theres a nice story there. Yeah, so callisto is a figure in greek mythology. She was a nymph in the garden of diana. She had taken a vow of chastity. Zeus raped her. He was a serial offender. I cant believe i set this up by saying, this is a nice story. [ laughter ] yeah, its a really nice story. Its a happy story. Seth tell us the wonderful story about callisto. Yeah, yeah, heartening. And oh, it gets better. [ light laughter ] and when diana saw her bathing and pregnant, she expelled her from the garden for have broken her vow. So were really trying to solve two problems. One, how can we hold these powerful offenders accountable for their actions . And two, how do we ensure that those who are supposed to support victims in their hours of need, dont expel them from the garden. Seth at this moment right now, again, it feels like every day we hear more awful things in the field in which you work. Yet, there does seem to be a moment happening that could one day be reflected back on as a time where it all changed. Do you feel optimism with what you are doing right now . Do you feel within the last few months, that this is a time that were not missing the opportunity to take advantage of . I do. I do feel a lot of optimism. I feel like were in a moment of change. But were also in a moment of choice. And we can choose to invest in avenues that actually create a way for survivors to come forward in a way that minimizes their risk. Or we can lose momentum and do what weve done before, which is ask them to martyr themselves in a broken system. Seth well, i really appreciate all the work you do. And thank you so much for coming and talking to us about this. Give it up for jessica ladd.
