But what people didnt know is that he never actually gets to the question. Its time for a segment we call the big question. Here we go. [ cheers and applause ] whats the big question yeah n so, as im sure you know, were fast approaching the holiday of thanksgiving which in north america at least has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after congress requested a a proclamation from thenpresident washington who at the time was only in his second year in office. Although, as we know, it wasnt made a federal holiday for another 65 years when thenpresident lincoln proclaimed the holiday as a a national day of thanksgiving and praise. And one which now, bridges the gap between the costumed kookiness of halloween, and the nonsecular or religious holidays which tend to fall in late december. The word fall in this case referring to where the dates themselves lie in that the fall season. Yeah. During which thanksgiving coincidentally happens to fall. At least in north america, which leads me to ask, isnt it wonderfully ironic when you consider that thanksgiving, a a holiday of unity and community, of gratitude and appreciation, of recognition and congregation. Of fellowship, closeness, harmony and unity, considering just how much disagreement theres been historically, over where and when the first thanksgiving was held in the united states. The most contentious two parties of which, were the then colonies of virginia and massachusetts with the issue not being put to rest until 1963 1963. By then president kennedy who, as we all know, famously proclaimed, and i quote, over three centuries ago, our forefathers in virginia and in massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness set aside a a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields and for the love which bound them together. End quote. But i feel so grateful to be able to do this every single night and im very appreciative of all the support from all of you that my family received over the past week and were going to continue to work really hard to bring some light and laughter into the world. Jimmy because i especially want to thank you because i know youre on tour now with a band, with your are your sons in the band . My son ben is the ben daniels band. My son, lucas, is tour managing and doing sound. Its its its great. Its the trip of a lifetime. Theyre in their early 30s, late 20s, you know, the whole band, theres about five of them. All from this town in michigan where im from, and yeah. Were we played two shows last night in east lansing. Jimmy you play what what instrument . Acoustic guitar. You know. Jimmy thats fantastic. Ive been writing for, like, 40 years. Jimmy so its all original stuff . Pretty much, yeah. Pretty much, yeah. We dont want them to know whats coming next so [ laughter ] jimmy yeah. Its been great. Jimmy yeah. Its just a joy. And usually guys my age we get viagra bands, you know those guys that [ laughter ] jimmy yeah. I see those yeah okay. Jimmy everyones groovin, having too good of a time. Yeah, oh, yeah. Every body here, they all got a fourhour erection while theyre playing so [ laughter ] so and i just want its not that. Jimmy just no. Its just great to feature these guys and jimmy is this your first band . No, the first well, i mean, its the one i care about. The one i the first one, like we all you had a band. Jimmy yeah. We named our band skyboid. Boid. Because apparently skybird had been taken. [ laughter ] so jimmy so for legal reasons we had two gigs. This was high school. We had two gigs. I played organ because i knew four cords and and i was also on the Basketball Team in this small town, and we had just lost by 30 points and my drummer comes in for our second gig high school dance. And hes dressed like, i dont know, hair band, something out of, you know he tied this is, like, early 70s. Jimmy yeah. And hes going, come on, man, we got to go. We got a gig and im going im like, okay, fine. I get out there. We have an hour to play. Were so nervous. We were through our entire set in 40 minutes. So we had a 20minute last song, which we used grand Funk Railroad footstompin music. And we played a 20minute jam on that. Jimmy oh, gosh. And we just were, like, playing and looking at our watch and just trying to make [ laughter ] jimmy it was like, solo our guitar player jimmy solo again i said, go, go. And our guitar player hit his knees and went down and went back and was playing the guitar on his back, couldnt get up. [ laughter ] he couldnt get up. Jimmy my gosh so im at the organ going jimmy faster. The bass players, like, trying to pull him up. Jimmy and help him up. And were still doing oh, its a disaster. Jimmy i had a band, we were called the born losers. Was the name of [ laughter ] it was based on a billy jack movie. Yeah. Jimmy and wed see them. And we would only play new years eve gigs at my house. [ laughter ] and at one year, i remember, we did our our lead singer well, i was the lead singer, but our cosinger wanted to do spoken word one year. [ laughter ] at a new years eve party. So we stopped the music and he would read a poem and then we would lower the lights. [ laughter ] it was really bad. And then we tried to change with the theme of the year so with the olympic year, we became the born lugers. [ laughter ] so it was an olympic team. That didnt help jimmy no. Jimmy you were doing another thing that i always dreamt of doing. This new series, limited series, godless, is a a western. Yeah. Jimmy i would oh, i would love to be in a western. No, you wouldnt. Jimmy oh, yeah. [ light laughter ] no i no. Jimmy it is like my dream to be in a western. Can you ride a horse . Jimmy no. [ light laughter ] see, thats not what actors say. [ laughter ] jimmy oh, yeah, exactly. Oh, yeah, sure, i can ride a a horse. And thats the problem. Thats the problem. And i had done gettysburg years ago where i had to walk on a horse. So i knew that when they go, can you ride a horse . And you say, absolutely, when you cant, go out and learn. Because on godless, you are in the Kentucky Derby on day one. 30 horses across, youre going, and its only a matter of time before you are either thrown off or fall off. Jimmy i know you told me this story, and this is a true story. You wont believe this. This is an amazing story. Youre in a scene and youre on your horse and what take is this . Well, we did one and then there we had to do a second one. Jimmy yeah. Because there was an actor behind us who was riding like this. [ laughter ] he did. Because you you dont scott frank, the director, you go, scott. Take one. Everyone survived. Jimmy yeah, lets take this as a win, were good. Yeah, and he goes, well, the guy was back there doing [ laughter ] okay, all right, well frame him out, do it again. They moved the camera car 15 yards. Now were in, like, a different lane on the highway through the prairie kind of thing. Jimmy now the horse doesnt know where to really go. Oh, youre riding, riding, riding, and im riding and im shooting over the top of the horse and im john wayne and im just all the training is working. Jimmy yeah. And then theres this sage brush pile. As big bigger twice as big as your desk, and were heading right for it. And the horse is going to jump. Hes going to jump it. We havent done jumping. We havent trained jumping. Jimmy no. [ laughter ] no, no. I got a wrangler right next to me and a wrangler, mark and ricky, and their job is to save my butt when things go wrong, and things are about to go wrong. [ light laughter ] and i get right up to the thing, and im going to jump to him and the horse veers. Jimmy youre going to jump off your horse onto another horse . Im jumping over to marks horse. [ laughter ] which we never rehearsed hadnt even talked about. Jimmy how could you even think about doing this . Because it was either that or voom and were airborne. Well, yeah, when i was about seven years old, my music teacher put me in she put me in a play, and i discovered that i was an actress and i would hear the chatter of people saying, oh, she did great. Shes doing great. She did great in the play. So when i was a little kid, that kind of stuck with me that i did great in that play. And i didnt really look at it any more until i got older and i was like, okay, you know, singings is my first love. Jimmy absolutely, yeah. Thats just what i do. So, until i when i got older, then i started looking at a it again. So, you know. Jimmy fantastic. Yeah, thank you. Jimmy youre already won awards. Breakout performance actress at the hollywood film awards. Breakthrough performance at the indie wire honors. How does it feel to win these awards for acting . Its amazing. Just to be recognized as an actress. Ive been singing all my life, ive been in this game for 25something years and just to be looked at as an actress and respected as an actress, because i really work hard for it. I just didnt want to get a a role as an artist and, you know, not do my best. So i feel really good about it. Im so humbled by the whole thing, that you know jimmy thats the best part. You actually are humble, because youre also known as the queen of hip hop soul, and to be known as that, its hard to be humble. Youre like, hey, queen. [ light laughter ] and you go, yeah, i guess. I mean, does that when you first heard that term, did that does that put you in a a whole different did you think about that 7yearold mary j. . When i first heard that term, i didnt understand that i was a queen. I just thought, you know, i just i didnt know what to do with it. I didnt understand that i was a queen until later in my career when i heard my song, Family Affair on the country station. Like, i was like, well, r b music is not played on the country station, so i must have done something. But it didnt register to me that i was a queen of anything, a queen of hip hop soul, i know it was a form of music, but i didnt take it like, you know, im a queen. Now its like, yeah, im a a queen. Im queen of everything, you know, im just queen, you know, of what i do. Queen everything that i do. Jimmy yeah. So i accept it now. Not being cocky about it, just i feel like i had to earn it. I didnt know i didnt really understand its a genre of music, the queen of hip hop soul. Its a form of music, right . Jimmy it is. Right, isnt it . Jimmy yeah. So now its like, okay, yeah, im the leader and the queen of that type of music. Jimmy and you can own it. Yeah. I own it now. Its mine. Jimmy yeah, no that was [ light laughter ] they threw me out of that karaoke box in the mall. I wouldnt even but i love anita baker. Well, my cousin, she forced me to go into the karaoke booth. Jimmy where was this . In westchester at the galleria mall. Yeah, and jimmy great story. Yeah. Jimmy so you went in there. You were singing anita baker . Yeah, the song caught up in the rapture. Of course it was like a tape. A regular tape. And i took the tape. I brought it home and gave to it my stepfather, and he played it and he went crazy over it and he knew jeff red, who worked General Motors with him, and jeff red knew Andre Harrell. And Andre Harrell got the tape and came down to schlobohm, to the projects where we lived. He actually came to, you know, the projects where we lived. And was standing in my living room, and i sang probably like five, six songs from that album. Jimmy in your living room. Yeah, my living room from that rapture album and then the rest is history. And i didnt know i was going to get a deal. I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever. You know, because you dont think when you come from where i come from, you dont think these things are going to happen. So i was singing because thats what i did to survive. And here i am because of that day. Jimmy absolutely. Congratulations. [ cheers and applause ] and just knocking it out of the park every single time you come on the show. I always love every time, i love all your performances. Now i gotta say, youre fantastic. Mudbound. I didnt even i knew your voice, but you dont look like you at all. Right, well, that was the goal, to completely disappear. Of course, i fought because, you know, it was a lot to become florence, you know, after coming off the bad boy reunion tour and youre mary j. Thank you. Jimmy basically do you want to set it up, what the movies about . Well, the movie is about two families that live in the jim crow era in mississippi delta, one black, one white. And they are bound by hardships and hard times. And the wives of these families, theyre the ones that get really close, and their relationship is bonded through just being relatives as women and the things we go through as women. Its also about how black men went off to war and fought as free men but came back to the south and were still called niggers and being lynched. Its also a love story. Its also about friendship. Its its its just so many different narratives to this. And, you know, its very powerful because the love love is the savior of this and normally love doesnt save anything in these types of movies. And the black the black family is not slaves. This is not a slave movie. These people are free and proud, but you know, its a a great movie. Dee rees did an amazing job.
