The survey shows the depth of the misery for bay area working families. According to a survey by apartment list, 25 of renters are spending half of what they make in income on rent and half of renters are spending a third of what they make. That doesnt leave a lot of money for other things. Take a look at the numbers and see if this is what you are paying. Compare bay area rent far twobedroom apartment because thats where families tend to live. 2500 in san jose. 2240 in oakland. In San Francisco, you pay nearly 3100. For reference, i threw in los angeles at 1700. New york city, infamously high at 2400, nearly 2500. Next tuesday, they will vote to amend the apartment rent ordinance which could cap rent increases to 5 per year without allowing them to bank the unincreased rent increases. The latest analysis show a third to half of middle class would see their taxes go up. If you are republicans and you cut taxes anywhere, you have to raise them somewhere else or come up with creative math, then you are going to add to the deficit. California regulators are cracking down on background checks. Pete suratos joins us live at sfo with what you need to know before we hop into our next ride. Good morning, pete. Reporter good morning to you, laura. A number of people get picked up or dropped off at sfo with uber and lyft. Theres a number of background checks in place for these drivers. Regulators voted they wont be required to go through a fingerprint process saying it wouldnt add more safety to passengers in those cars. The taxi industry isnt happy because they require drivers to undergo fingerprint checks. Now, as far as whats in place for the ride sharing companies, theres annual screenings for the third party agencies. The commissioners, during a meeting, pointed out photo id is not required for fingerprinting screenings in place, pointing to a popular Screening Software called live scan, as an example. Theres a California Law that passed last year, that went into law at the start of the year that prohibits the hiring of sex offenders and convicted felons for the ride sharing companies. A 5,000 fine for drivers with a record on the road. Lyft saying in a statement, they recognize the strength and effectiveness of the background check process. Oakland city counsel Public Safety committee will not hold a hearing to discuss an august immigration ring. They claim the citys police chief lied about whether anyone detained in the raid had been charged with a crime. They question whether it violates the policy of federal immigration investigations. Investigators believe they have their suspect in a 1976 San Mateo County murder. Dna recently helped them link this man, 71yearold leon seymour to one of the murders. Hes currently in custody for kidnapping and Sexual Assault. Seymour is accused of killing 19yearold denise in daily city, one of six young women killed in 1976 under similar circumstances. The fbi thought they were the work of the same killer, but another man has been linked to two of the crimes. The kate steinle murder case resumes monday with closing arguments expected next week. This man exposed himself at two Elementary Schools and a nursing Rehab Facility in stockton. He told a woman at one of the schools he was going to rape her. She fought him off and injured him. Eventually, police started chasing that suspect. A Good Samaritan heard about the chase on the Police Scanner and decided to help out.
