San Francisco Police are saying the shooting took place just after midnight. Officers working their beat in the Castro District on halloween night and they were flagged down by someone who said there was a suspicious car in the area that we just showed you off of 18th and diamond. When they approached the car, they said gunfire was exchanged between the male suspect and the officer, resulting in gun shot wounds to one officer and the suspect. Now its the number of gunshots that really has everyone in the area talking. We had a chance to speak to one resident who heard it all and was expecting the worst. First i thought, you know, its halloween in the castro. After what happened in new york, maybe there was some sort of, you know, shooter. But definitely, you know, a lot of shots. It was not just your typical, you know, exchange from my experience at least. Reporter as we all know, halloween a fairly busy night here in the Castro District. I want to point out the officer is 41 years old that was shot. The crime scene investigator, what were being told by San Francisco miss, he was here since police increased patrols due to the large crowds we see here on halloween. Now its unknown exactly who fired the shots first. All of this is under investigation by san Francisco Police and the d. A. s office. Were live in the Castro District. You may recall back in 2006 a fire broke out a fight broke out, i should say. Nine people were shot. Now at the time the halloween festivities were a citysanctioned event. After that shooting, the city stopp stopped sanctioning it. Work continues this morning following a big fire that broke out on the train tracks overnight. This is what firefighters had to deal with this morning. We brought you these images during today in the bay. Nbc bay area kris sanchez live there right now to give us an update on this story. Kris . Seven hours after that fire started out here on the rails outside of willow glen, there are inspectors still on the rail lines right now trying to make sure it is structurally sound before Union Pacific trains start rolling through here again. There is the one that caltrain uses and the wooden one that Union Pacific uses, and thats the one that seems to be damaged after this fire just after 3 30 this morning. Firefighters had to out within about 45 minutes, but by then the damage was done. A 200 stretch of wooden trestle was burned. Union pacific inspectors are checking the Structural Integrity still eight hours after the fire. The caltrain track was cleared if the repairs ultimately take awhile, they could end up using the same line. It wouldnt be something too bad. I mean, we expect minor delays, but nothing more than a few minutes. Reporter now, there is no immediate cause for the fire at this point, but san jose fire captain tells me his crews were out here in the same spot just about a year ago with a fire related to a homeless emcampment here and says it was not the first time. The Union Pacific spokesman told me the railway is private property and in fact Union Pacific police reminded us of that this morning, anyone camping there or living there is trespassing. Reporter they live in Castro Valley. Its the largest unincorporated area in the bay area. A ranging community that has boomed into 61,000 residents who say they need sidewalks for safety. Everybodys so scared to walk to school. Reporter Anna Tumlinson says she was recently swiped by the side mirror of a passing car while walking her kids to stanton elementary. Thats when the car hit me in front of this other car here. It could have hit my kids. Reporter adding to the derek, drivers parking on sidewalks. These are all illegally parked . This is the common practice in Castro Valley . Yes, unfortunately. Reporter and then there are the sidewalks to nowhere. They Border School campuses but abruptly end at busy intersections. Thats it. Its like an island, you cant go anywhere. There are so many intersections in Castro Valley like this. Half the community has no sidewalks. Reporter joeian lauer leads the group bike, walk Castro Valley. People understand it takes two to four years for sidewalks to be constructed, but they want temporary fixes in the meantime. They point to painted lines or asphalt curbs that can mark pedestrian pathways. Theyre failing to consider the shortterm solutions that are inexpensive. Its an easy way for them to enforce protecting where people walk. Reporter art cabrera is the principal Civil Engineer for Alameda County public works. Who is accountable for the safety of the people who have to use their wheelchairs or walk in the street with traffic . Yeah, you know, so thats where i think we were focussing on the defensive walking. Youve got to take safety into your own hands. Dont be distracted while you walk. Reporter the county spent 4,000 on Public Service announcements to tell people how to walk defensively. Always look both ways before crossing the street. Reporter cabrera says the county hasnt painted white lines or poured asphalt curbs because of cost, maintenance and liability. Do you worry there will be a very serious accident where someone is seriously hurt or even killed . Yeah, its something that thats why were actively pursuing it as fast as we can on sidewalks. What other solutions are there for people while theyre waiting for the sidewalks to be built . They have the opportunity to fund the. How much on average does it cost to build a sidewalk . Depending on the length of the block, half a million to 1 million for a block. Half a million to 1 million to a block. Thats a lot of money. He reports people to we found they have. 128 times since 2014. But enforcement is spotty. The Sheriffs Department issues an average of one ticket per day for cars parked on sidewalks in all of Alameda County. They are always temporary solutions. Zarates defense team argued the gunfired accidentally. Investigators are starting to understand what led to a runaway truck crash in San Francisco that injured three people. As we break it down for napa valley today, well reach that High Temperature right at about 3 00 or 4 00. Will stay there for a couple of hours. And then around sunset well drop the temperatures back into the low 60s. As you go out for the walk, coming back into some cooler temperatures.
