Throughout the morning there. The wind blows. You can see those embers as they move in the wind. That is causing a lot of that fire to spread in many areas. Homes, businesses, a lot of things destroyed. Anything in the path of that. We have been on air since 4 00 this morning. The fire broke out about 10 00 last night. Live on the air on today in the bay we showed you the Mobile Home Park right kind Kaiser Hospital there. Own our Damian Trujillo is there to show us. Is there anything left behind, damian . Well, laura, you know what, this is right out of a movie set. Look at this behind me. Just a bunch of charred metal. The flames you see are the open gas lines that are just ongoing. I mean, crews really dont have time to come out here and they shut off these lines or do anything else because theyre busy fighting this fire in other parts of the area. If you go to the other side of the street here, what were looking at is a commercial building that is destroyed. Still on fire. Then you have a building next to it that is okay. So what that tells me is that the embers from this fire blew over in this direction and destroyed a big part of this Mobile Home Park. I mean, look at the several cars here. We are told that at this point that they dont believe that there are any injuries or fatalities out of this particular fire here. But then if you pan a little farther up to the north end of the trailer park, you can see some of these mobile homes are still fine and in tact. But the ones that are more adjacent to this main road here in downtown santa rosa, gone. Just completely gone. Charred metal everywhere. As we were driving into town, see some of these fire trucks that are Just Cruising through the city right now. Again, theyre going to the areas where they are needed the most at this point. At this point, well, you know, these homes are gone. There is nothing really they can do about this situation here. So theyre going into other areas right now where these crews are desperately needed, either to evacuate people, to save homes, to save lives, and thats what they are doing at this point. Just what im seeing right now is just a lot of stunned faces. A lot of folks who are here who cant believe that this really happened. It looks like its right in the middle of town, and what are they going to do . Theyre out here, as were driving into town, we saw some of these stores. A lot of the stores here are closed in the santa rosa area. We saw a home depot and gas stations are closed. Power is out at a lot of locations. Power lines are down and people are walking in between them and across them. Hopefully theyre not energized at this point. Several buildings, fire trucks over behind us right now, several buildings, again, have caught on fire here. Some of them have extensive damage at this point. We are right across on the west side of highway 101, right across from the kaiser, across from the hilton hotel, the hilton hotel, which im told caught on fire. I could see it from a distance. It looked smokey. It doesnt look good in that direction. Again, were not told of any injuries or fatalities around these parts, but crews are busy right now going into other locations, other areas. Thats the latest here. I mean, these gas lines are going to keep spewing flames here as long as those lines are open. There is no end in sight it seems. Crews are in other locations trying to make sure that whatever is happening here doesnt happen in other places. One thing i should mention is we can pan over to the trees. There is no wind at this point, which is great news because as were told the winds were howling in this part of santa rosa, but it seems like the winds have died down. Thats great news as far as embers are concerned. As we were driving into town, billows black smoke in different parts of the area. In residential areas, in commercial areas. Just its hard for these fire crews to get to every single fire because there are so many of them in the santa rosa area. Back to you in the studio. Quite honestly, damian, its quite shocking for us to see it, marcus and myself. Weve been on air since 4 00 this morning. We saw in that Mobile Home Park was just an inferno. We did. Now to see the aftermath. As we were saying, you see images similar to that when we talk about things going on in war zones. Then you look at those pictures and you see the cars charred. You see what was once someones home gone. Gone. I cant imagine how they must feel. Part of the frame there. There is sadly going to be a lot of stories of devastation, you can already tell, in this fire. Lets check in with Mark Matthews right now. He is not too far from where damian is, also in santa rosa, also in a place devastated by these fires. This is the coffey park neighborhood. Mark . Reporter thats right. Were just a few blocks east of where we were at our last report a few minutes ago, and behind me you can see an entire block, a section here at santiago and san miguel, and everything you see is burned to a crisp. Brian and his wife joany live just a few blocks from here. Look across the street and over there. Can you describe for me what this neighborhood looked like before last night . It was just your typical suburban neighborhood, you know . People washing their cars in the driveway. We walked our dog down here daily. There is a park just over the on the next street from here. Reporter brian, walk me across the street here and tell me what was here. This was a home. This was someones home right here on the corner. Reporter and its not just one home, this is an entire block. Yeah, this is an entire block. Reporter how did the fire, which was i assume east of here, get this far into this neighborhood . We were told it came over porter creek road to mark west road. We have friends that live over by the Elementary School and were told that whole neighborhood is destroyed, too. Reporter thats what weve heard as well. It seems unbelievable. This is like apocalyptic looking. This is where my kids grew up. This is where we walk the dog. This is where our friends live. This is the neighborhood that decorates for christmas every year. Reporter brian talking to us about the devastation. Do you have any as youve been Walking Around the neighborhood, how many more scenes like this . I cant imagine. I couldnt believe it was this bad. We came in on the other direction and we were one of the lucky ones. Our side of the street got spared. I just feel for all of these people. Reporter indeed. We are in the coffey park neighborhood of santa rosa. Were at santiago drive and san miguel, and in every direction that you look from this intersection, every block is burned down. We have heard that there are more homes to the east of us. Well be moving that direction to show you, but this is this is devastating. Reporting from santa rosa, mark mathews, nbc may area news. It is. I mean, how that man described his own neighborhood. It was typical suburban. Last night they were washing cars, walking their dogs. And now the park just over there just the homes. He said someones home was here. What you see there is really nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Theres going to be a lot of heartache going on. Now, im very anxious to talk to this next person. Were joined by phone with terry cotter. Shes with safari west. If youre not familiar with safari west, it is a great area where families go. They take their kids and have wild animals. Big tents where you can go and experience what a safari would be like in santa rosa. Terry, are you there . Yes, im here. People have been anxious to hear how safari west is, how the animals are. Did you have to evacuate . Yes, we evacuated. I live next door and our house is gone. Safari west fared fairly well, and peter lang, the owner, probably the only person on the mountain that stayed behind. He was taking car of all of the animals, getting them out of the barns if there were any structures on fire. But nothing was. All the animals are fine. That was our main concern. I mean, thats pretty miraculous in itself. Because you have a lot of very exotic different animals there. Explain that to people if they dont know a lot about safari west. Well, its a 400acre african animal reserve, and there are about 700, 800 animals and birds on the property, including buffalos, zbeebras. We have 14 giraffes. Theyre all okay. Wow, thats mainamazing. Did you have to move any of them out or the structures they were kept are in tact . Well, again, im in florida, but what i understand is they tried to get all the birds out of there. Boxes, but there wasnt a lot of time. This thing came through in the middle of the night. And our house, our niece is there. And somebody came in and said were leaving right now. And out they went. Thats how fast it came. Its like a tidal wave coming through. And i know and peter lang stayed. Any animals that were in a wooden structure, he got out. I know we were talking to the zoo in oakland before not too long ago and they were saying they move a lot of those animal noose bathrooms and things like that if something should happen like this. Dylan with the air quality, is there a certain place that you can or did that you know of move those animals . No, theyre all theyre all outside. I mean, the air quality is the same for everybody, i guess. So, im sorry to hear about it sounds like your own, your personal home was destroyed, but most of the park itself will be okay . I mean, youll be able to reopen . Oh, yes. Yeah. But, you know, i dont know when and i dont know if any of the structures got singed, but it seemed to, you know, i think the saving grace, part of it is the animals there have grazed the grass down to nothing. So there is no undergrowth. You know, thats a very interesting youre right. Youre completely right. Thats a very interesting point. Theyve basically made the defensible space. Right. That every home needs naturally. Well, its really good news to hear that the animals i did, i had people asking me, do you know about safari west . Do you know about the animals . What you do with that wildlife preserve is pretty phenomenal and a lot of memories are made for a lot of families there. Thank you so much for joining us, terry. Youre welcome. Good luck to you. At this time, we wanted to take you back to Mark Matthews. He is over in santa rosa at the coffey park neighborhood. He has been showing us just the damage left behind from the fire in that neighborhood. And, mark, tell us if you have someone with you. Reporter yeah, we do. Frank norwood who lives about a block from here. Were at santiago and san new gel. Frank, your house where from here . About two blocks away. Reporter and its gone. What happened . My wife called me. People are knocking on doors. I got home and just helping people just get out and knocking on doors, get out. The fire was at coffey park. We seen the flames we tried to get everybody out of the neighborhood and do the best we could to help the people get out. Reporter in doing that, you left everything you have in your house . Everything. Everything. Thats what the bible always says, its not what we have, its what we have with our family. And love and understanding, thats material things because we cant take it with us. We thank god that were helping the neighbors, and everybody that we can to help. Thats what its all about. Whatever i have doesnt matter now. Who i helped today, i can be a blessing to. So thats what im here for. Reporter how did your wife you have a son and daughter . Right there. Reporter theyre okay . Theyre okay. Theyre right there. Reporter i should explain that Frank Norwood is a minister in this neighborhood. And you were telling me you felt this was some kind of a sign. Reporter sign, yes. Were in end times. Were in revelation. That means god showed me the processcy, whats going on in the world right now. These things are happening right now. We have to come together as a nation and a people. Understanding, loving one another, honoring one another, that is the key. So we love and honor each other, well come together and help one another to be strong. This nation needs to be strong. Reporter ive got to tell you, leaving everything you own own in that house and watching it burn while you were trying to help your neighbors get out makes me proud to talk to you, sir. Absolutely. God bless you. Reporter youve got my card. Thank you, sir. Reporter Frank Norwood from this coffey park neighborhood last night watched his house burn to the ground, as we have seen every house in this fourblock neighborhood, nothing left standing. Nothing. Reporter here at santiago road and san miguel. Santiago drive, i should say, and san miguel road. Everywhere you look in every direction, there are chimneys and gas fires and nothing left but rubble. Amazing. And just. Reporter reporting from santa rosa, mark mathews, nbc bay area news. Losing everything, but still finding light in all of that. To help other people and say that, you, this is something to get out and help other people. Thats what weve been seeing all throughout the bay area, people wanting to help. We feel that weve already seen a few more stories of that than, you know, than people being sad about it. Obviously theyre very sad and people are going to were going to hear so many stories unfold through all of this, but its amazing. The people that realize, living what a gift that is. Like one man said earlier this morning, you know, think bob was talking to him. He said, how do you feel . He said, well, im above ground. Right. Think of that, put it all in perspective, losing everything or potentially losing everything, but just happy you have your family and health and safety. Thats what were seeing in some situations. Many lives were saved and spared in all of this. As all of the stories are now starting to really unfold. Lets not forget, the fires are still burning as well. 0 containment. Were talking about 12 to 15 firesburg in napa and Sonoma County right now. It is daylight. A chance for them to assess a little bit more of what theyre really up against through this area. 20,000 people evacuated at this time in a lot of different shelters throughout the area. One of those areas hit, a Mobile Home Park near kaiser medical center. This is in santa rosa. We have Damian Trujillo. He is there. Actually now we saw the Mobile Home Park burning this morning, but now people are actually returning and seeing it. Damian, tell us about whats going on right there now. Reporter yeah, well, you know, this part of the wall, i mean, this is a wooden part of a wooden part of this mobile home here that collapsed a short while ago. These are neighbors who are coming out and doing what they can. Again, because they see the flames are ongoing here. Not much more damage that can be caused to these buildings, but still, trying to do their part to keep this from spreading, maybe having these embers pick up one more time in the wind does in fact pick up. This is just neighbors helping neighbors in whatever way that they can. But this is that Mobile Home Park. I saw tom jensens report earlier this morning, and its just its devastating to see the results of this fire caused by the embers here. Flown across highway 101. Tom jensen was on the east the west side of 101. Im on the east side. You can see how far these embers flew. Again, these are mobile homes and there is an area just north of here where the mobile homes are slightly damaged, but they are still in tact. And one of the reasons is because of this next gentleman im going to bring up here. He says he got up at 2 00 in the morning. Give us your name. My name is eric hazyes, i wa up from a previous party. They party on sunday nights. I was already awake. We heard there was a fire across the freeway and we were just getting prepared. I started spraying the hes anyway. I told my lady, go ahead and take the kid and go to winter park to our familys house. As soon as she did that, i kept spraying as much as i could where my hes would reach. I sprayed my neighbors houses and my house, the shrubbery. I stayed as long as i could until embers were coming down on me and took my chances and left with my dog when i could. I came home and see where the fire stopped. Im very disappointed it took this many homes, but at the same time, im fortunate that didnt get close to my house. The closest it got was it took my back fence. Reporter you think the action that you took at 1 00 or 2 00 in the morning by watering down your rooftop and your neighbors rooftop, you think thats what saved it . Absolutely. I think thats what saved my homes and my other two neighbors homes. Any hot ember is going to ignite real quick. If it land on something wet, its got a chance to put it out. I took my chances and sprayed as much water as i could as fast as i could until it got too hot and i had to leave. Reporter your thoughts on what youre seeing right now . Total disbelief and devastation. This is this is like waking up from a bad dream and its not going away so i just am glad that everybody made it out and no casualties as far as i know. I just hope it stays that way because this is this is horrific. And these firefighters are doing one heck of a job out here. Reporter they cant get to everything. Look at this concrete building. The firefighters are up there right now. This fire was not there when we got here. This fire, you can see the smoke billowing, so now theyre i presume just from learning about firefighter techniques, theyre trying to drill some holes on to the roof and let the heat escape. That way it wont consume the rest of the building, but they have their hands full here. Thank you very much. No problem. Reporter good work out here. Again, he was up at 1 00 or 2 00 in the morning, watering down the rooftop of his mobile home. He think that is actually what saved it. His neighbors, just utter devastation here. You go across the street, the smoke has been billowing for quite some time now. It will be for thor for seeable future because there is no sense, no reason for firefighters to respond to that location because its completely gone. The smoke and the fire is not, but the billing is, and so theyre going to areas where they think theyre able to say lets go back on the rooftop here. The firefighter up there has his hands full as well. Firefighters are we see water heses from fire trucks all across the street. We are on the west side from 101 across from the hilton hotel here. This looks like a concrete structure, a concrete billing, and something in there has caught fire and it looks like its a never ending sight here. Folks are still walking out with pets. There is another homeowner here you can see. It looks like shes not taking any chances. That part of the park seems to be okay, but a lot of folks are leaving this area and theyre leaving to witness just the utter devastation from this fire here in santa rosa. A lot of blank stares. A lot of folks are shocked at what theyre seeing. They understand the magnitude of this. They understand that there is only so much firefighters can do. There are only so many firefighters, but when you have strong winds like the ones you had here, when you add the embers flying in different parts of the city, its just incredible to see that this fire was on the mountainside on the other side and just the embers, they flew for miles it seems. We saw that in the fire in san jose where the fire was in one part of the city and embers flew for two miles. Right. Reporter and caught another apartment complex on fire. It seems like thats what happened here in santa rosa. Back to you guys. I remember that very well. Santana row, you actually saw the embers floating above. I think that was the case here, too. Especially with the high winds, too. Very tough news were getting from mendocino county. The first report of a death as a result of these fires. We know one death there and two seriously injured people. This is in mendocino county. This is what weve really been dreading, we didnt want to hear today, but this is a reality for us at this point. As they continue to battle that fire, we do know that this is a live chopper from sky rainnger there. You can see the fire continues to burn in many areas. This is from napa county and where the fire continues to burn. We do know. It is. Its just engulfing this area here. You should see what firefighters are up against. Very rugged terrain in parts of napa county and Sonoma County as well. Just the range there theyre up against, but as well as that, you know, there are residential areas, there are country clubs, there are winery, there arves i vineyards. Its a tough fight for firefighters. At least 20,000 people are in Evacuation Centers. We originally started with four, it grew to five. Now i know of about six or seven as churches are opening their doors as well. People are doing whatever they can. Take a look at, this is a screen from earlier today. This was some of the most striking live pictures that weve ive ever seen on Live Television this morning. These are pictures from Kaiser Hospital up in santa rosa where they had to literally wheel out the patients. Some that were in icu. You see them still attached to their ivs there with a team of doctors and nurses because they had to evacuate the entire hospital. The flames were burning so close to that site. They took some people away in what ambulances they had, but this is a situation where doctors and nurses just opened the doors of their own cars to transport some of these patients, some of whom could walk, maybe they were in wheelchairs or walker. Whatever they could do to move these we know at least 100 people had to be moved this morning from this Kaiser Hospital. That is the scene we saw. They really were trying to get everyone to safety there. Now, right now we want to go back to Mark Matthews. He is now in the coffey park neighborhood. Hes been there this morning. Weve seen the aftermath. Hes with a woman now who lost her home. Just devastating time for her im sure this morning. Reporter as far as you can see behind me here on santiago drive, there are burned down homes, at least ten of them. This place that we are looking right here, this remains, the motorcycle, the washing machine and dryer, this belonged to sherry sharp, a three bedroom, two bath house. Gone. Gone. Reporter how long have you lived here, sherry . Ive lived here for 26 years. Raised my kids here. All our pictures are gone. Everything. Everything is gone. Its a fire pit. Its pretty awful. But were all healthy and safe and we have to just try to be grateful for that, but its pretty awful. Reporter were you here last night when this happened . Yes, we just heard the wind, smelled smoke. I asked my son if he had burned something. He said, no, its just fires around us. You know, we turned on the news and we heard that the kohls was on fire. So we just threw some things together, but there are a lot of things that we left behind. Reporter a lifetimes worth. Yeah, memories. Reporter can you describe for me what were looking at here . What was it . Oh, god, it was it was a beautiful, loving home. This was my kitchen. And we just we got some new flooring not too long ago. New appliances. My husbands harleydavidson. The boys rooms, our room. We had this beautiful backyard that we had this great landscaper design, and this was a court that we used to have fun playing on. Reporter will you rebuild . Oh, yeah. Well make it well make it good again, you know . This is this is home. And it looks like its going to take awhile. Reporter after 27 years, i can understand you wanting to stay. Id guess that there were ten homes burned as we look down santiago. Is that an accurate number from what you can tell me . I would say so. I havent even driven down there or walked down there. Reporter were there fire crews here last night . I never heard a thing. I never saw a firefighter. I never heard anybody warn us to leave. It was pretty much if we wouldnt have made a decision to leave on our own, we never heard anything on the cell phones, no emergency information. We would have burned. I cant believe there are not more people dead. Maybe there is. Reporter sherry sharp talking to us from the coffey park neighborhood. As we look down this way, we saw the ten or so lots, theyre really lots now, all the houses are gone, but take a look back this direction. Looking north up santiago, across san miguel, as far as you can see in this direction, more homes burned. I mean, scores of homes just in this one neighborhood have been completely destroyed by this fire that swept through the neighborhood last night, early this morning. Winds gusting, sparks flying and the devastation is complete. Reporting from coffey park in santa rosa, Mark Matthews, nbc bay area news. That is heartbreaking to hear, you know, the sadness in her voice. Exactly. Sadly, were going to hear more and more stories like that as we see the devastation behind them. Lets go to Damian Trujillo, hes at that Mobile Home Park in santa rosa that we saw go up in flames earlier. What was sad about the pictures that you were bringing us is people still had heses out there on their home. Scooping up water in the buckets from the gutter there. Trying to put out the smoke, damian . Reporter yeah, and here with one of the gentleman with the water hoses, mike. Mike, tell us what you were doing. We saw you with the water hose. You were still out here. This continues what we did this morning. We brought our hoses out here to try to save this house and it got too intense so we couldnt do it any further, but it all started with that palm tree. That palm tree was the one that had all the rubbish on it, and it took the fence out and the fence started all of this, all the way down. Reporter were you able to see any of the embers that we keep talking about . It came right on my house. I soaked down the roof, i soaked down the garden and left the water on when i left. The waters been on for eight hours now. You could see the debris from the tree that was there. Reporter heres what im gathering, i mean, there is a shortage of firefighters obviously because there are these spot fires everywhere. I know. Reporter it seems like volunteers are taking over. We took care of our own here. Eric, this gentleman here, and another guy by the name of bob percy, and we all had hoses and we were trying to save everybody. Reporter now, this isnt something this isnt something you practice for. I dont want to call it kneejerk, but just the human nature, the human reaction to what it was human reaction. It was like we know each other. One said go get so and so, we came here and took care of it. Reporter were showing live pictures right now whats left of your neighbors home. Just describe for us what youre seeing here. Things this is roxanne. Shes been here for 20 years. She was out of the country. So we tried to save that house first. Because we knew she wasnt here. It just came too quickly. Reporter your reaction to everything youre seeing . Oh, devastated. Its just unbelievable. Ill have nightmare for a few years here. Its bad news. Really bad. Reporter and then, sir, you live across the street. There is a building in tact. That building is on fire. You look on the other side of the highway, the hospital there, the hilton is there. Whats going through your mind about whats happening to santa rosa . Oh, its just undermanned, too many things going on. Its too bad the fire department, you know, had just a tremendous job and they couldnt get it all done. So we had to do it ourselves. Our good volunteers and so on. Reporter i sense you might be shaken a little bit. Describe that feeling. Its unnerving. If you think youre losing your house and all the things you have, its not really good. I feel bad about it. Reporter and have you seen your neighbors, one whos have lost everything . I called them, but one lady i cant find her. I know she drove off and we were supposed to mean in connietown, but i cant find her and she wont answer her phone. I called her brother. Reporter she might not want to come back to see whats left of the home because there is really nothing left. Not much. Reporter thank you very much and thank you for your efforts, sir. Again, neighbors here and volunteers, they kicked into volunteer mode and they grabbed water hoses and buckets full of water, whatever they could. They tried desperately to save their neighbors homes in this park. The embers flew everywhere. This home is fine. Walk over here, do a 180 with you. Go to the left here and the grassy area where it looks like the clubhouse is. The grassy area caught on fire here. It just shows you the spot fires that occurred during this fire here in santa rosa. Just utter devastation. Some parts, other buildings spared by the wrath of this fire, and, again, across the way here, firefighters doing what they can. Theyre going from building to building. Those that they think they still have possibility of saving. Theyre just doing everything they can just a little bit overwhelmed right now by the magnitude of all of these fires combined. Back to you in the studio. All right. I can imagine the heartbreak and devastation and the eagerness of these people to return to their homes, but were just getting word from santa rosa fire, theyre calling it a critical message to santa rosa residents that evacuated residents should actually not attempt to return home right now until theyre notified by city officials. Obviously some people were close there and they want to go to see what is or what is not left behind. I can imagine its hard for people who can see their homes nearby to go and check on it. That is good advice. Want to make sure its as safe as possible. Could be a dangerous situation. A lot of the gas lines still burning. Want to make sure its safe for everyone out there. All right. Now we want to go to bob redell. He is live at Crosswalk Community church, one of the Evacuation Centers. People are asking for more information there. Bob . Reporter yeah, good morning to you there, marcus and law yeah. Hi, im bob. Whats your name . Sadie. Reporter sadie, where did you evacuate from . The mountains. Reporter what time did you evacuate . How did the message come through to you . We just came down about an hour ago. Reporter recent . Very recent. The helicopter was saying this is your last chance to get down the hill. Reporter was that the Sheriffs Office or cal fire . Cal fire, i believe. Reporter what was the scene like . Did you see the fire . Yes, there was fire on both sides of the mountain coming down. Trees were falling. There were logs on fire in the middle of the road. The house on the side of the hill is gone. Gone. Reporter what about your house . We dont know. We dont know. Reporter are you optimistic based on the terrain . What are your thoughts . No, we think it will be gone. Luckily we have a motor home parked here at walmart. We grabbed some stuff and were staying in it right now. Were checking on the neighbor here, sorry. Reporter no, thats okay. You go do that. Im sorry about your home. I hope everything is going to be okay. Thank you. Thank you. Reporter take care of yourself. Thank you so much. Reporter this is one lady among many who evacuated overnight, starting last night night into the morning. And the fact that she just evacuated within an hour shows you how long the evacuations have been going on. We spoke with the Sheriffs Office and cal fire earlier, they werent sure if they got everyone out. They suspected based on the fact that we are still in red flag conditions they expect to be more evacuations. Here at the Crosswalk Community church, what you see going on is these are older people who need nursing care. There i dont know if its assisted living or a nursing facility, but theyve come here to get these people into places where they can get proper care. Since many of these people are not ambulatory and being in a Community Center like this, theyre just not going to have the facilities that they need. Yes, there are cots in there, but they might need more medical attention. What weve seen, youve got emt nurses, theyre loading these patients up. Most of them elderly people. On to these buss and taking them to an assisted facility center. This is an example of how this community is coming together on such short notice. Something that, and, of course, these are first responders, theyre in the business of doing that. This just shows we know there are people who are volunteering their time who came out here to help these elderly people. The Crosswalk Community church, according to the red cross, was, they said, at capacity. That was early this morning, around 350 people. We just had lisa show up here. Its not clear if theyre still accepting people. There are other options in the napa area. The napa college gym and the Solano College library. If youre part of the atlas peak fire, thats the fire that is burning roughly over in that direction, those are some places you want to evacuate from. She did the right thing. When she heard the Authorities Say evacuate now, she did, and i gather it was hard for her to get out based on the fact there were logs on the road. We know that there were other people who had to be helicoptered out last night because there was no access to the road. If youre at home and you happen to be watching this, you do want to get out if the Authority Case so. Laura, marcus . Very much so. Someone is also cautioning about returning to your home to make sure its safe before city officials allow people in. All right. We want to bring back in mar matthews. Live in santa rosa. He is there in the coffey park neighborhood. Youve been speaking to a lot of people who lost everything in this fire. Its definitely a trying time for many people in that neighborhood. Reporter yeah, very emotional for many people in this neighborhood. Some of them still in shock from what happened last night. We are on santiago at san miguel, which is a neighborhood that has been completely wiped out by the fire. In every direction, there are burned homes. Derek kennedys home was right here. Derek, can you tell me from what you know how many hopes were looking at . Oh, roughly probably 500,000 houses just in this neighborhood. You think that many are gone from here . Yeah, i mean, it goes it go for a ways that way. Its nothing but houses. Reporter this is yours . Yeah. Reporter how long have you lived here . Me and my wife just bought this about a year ago. And were remodelling it. Believe it or not. Reporter thats how big a house . It is about 1,200 square feet. Reporter a couple of bedrooms . Three bedrooms . Yeah, three bedrooms. One bathroom. Reporter were you here last night when it happened . If so, tell me, if you can, describe what took place. Well, my wife and i started smelling some smoke and woke up and the previous day my neighbors had a fire pit going, and they kind of lost control of the fire and were wetting it down. There was smoke going everywhere. So we assumed it was that. But then i got up, checked my phone and somebody asked if we were okay because there was a fire somewhere near. I happened to walk outside and it was like a scene from the movie independence day. Everybody was running, throwing their stuff in cars. There was traffic, you know, where there usually isnt. Reporter especially not that time of the morning. Yeah. Yeah, 2 30 in the morning. We were half asleep. Just kind of, you know, we panicked and just threw everything we could in the car and took off and, you know, i got a couple of miles away and my wifes pregnant so i wanted to get her out of the smoke. Realized i left my cat here. So i turned around, dropped my wife off, came back and by that time everything was in flames, this whole neighborhood, except for my house and these two others. This one, this one, this one, and i ran i ran in to see if i could find my cat, but unfortunately it was just too dark, smokey. I wasnt able to find her. Reporter im sorry. But im very happy that you got out okay. Yeah, it could have been a lot worse, you know . Reporter what are you doing now . Where are you staying . Right now, were staying at my fatherinlaws house. From there, im really not sure. You know, this is all we had. We worked so hard, put everything we had into this house and its it was everything. Its going to take some time to figure out our next step. Reporter its awfully nice of you to take the time to talk to us. Thank you very much, derek. Derek kennedy here in the coffey park of santa rosa. This was his threebedroom house they were in the process of remodelling, his wife and derek able to get out okay. And thats about the best we can say about what happened to them. Reporting from santa rosa, Mark Matthews, nbc bay area news. Gosh, all the stories you hear. So glad they were able to get out. Exactly. Exactly. At least 20,000 people remain in Evacuation Centers that we know right now. No doubt theyll be looking for answers as well as to what remains in their lives now that theyve left their homes. Absolutely. Right now we want to bring in kari hall. She has been monitoring the wind gusts. The wind advisory thats in is it still in place, kari . No, it has expired. We are starting to see the winds coming down. Still pretty breezy coming through the delta, as we normally see this time of day in fairfield, the sustained winds at about 21 Miles Per Hour. These other locations at about 10 to 15 miles an hour at this point. We will have some calming winds as we go through the rest of the day. I want to show you how strong those winds were at the peak of the windstorm yesterday. In hawkeye, that is just to the east of geyserville near the river rock casino. The winds peaked at 79 Miles Per Hour. It was really strong throughout several hours yesterday in healedsburg, the peak winds at 51 Miles Per Hour. Think about one little spark or a downed tree or a power line on a power line, that could cause a lot of problems and a quick spreading wildfire. We dont yet know the cause, but look at these wind speeds. It was really windy. And thats whats caused this situation to get out of control really quickly. So we do still have the red flag warnings in effect until tomorrow morning. It has been extended. We will have winds coming out of the northeast at about 10 for to 15 Miles Per Hour. Low humidity and poor recovery. That means we wont see the relative humidity increasing very much, even during the overnight hours. The highest threat will continue to be across the north bay, where we will city have that red flag warning in effect. I want to show you what the temperatures are going to do for the rest of the day. In santa rosa and the Sonoma County fire, winds gusting out of the northeast at about 10 to 15 Miles Per Hour and temperatures in the low 70s, rising into the low 80s by early afternoon into the evening. A lot of smoke drifting around. We have ash falling. Some poor air quality in San Francisco, and now we are seeing it improving just a bit as the winds have shifted. As we take a live look outside in emeryville right now, a little bit of a clearer view across the bay than we had earlier this morning when the winds were coming Straight North to south. So it is improving, but still pretty smokey, even as we take a live look outside in the south bay in san jose. You can see there. Here is a live camera, i want to show you this. In healedsburg, this is one of the vineyards there. One of our Weather Underground areas. We can see the smoke in the distance on either side of this camera and this is a still camera, so ive been watching it update every few minutes. And still seeing that smoke drifting by. And our temperatures are going to still be very warm into the upper 70s, low 80s, but one thing that is working in our favor, were not dealing with extreme heat today and it will be a little bit cooler in the north bay, upper 70s to lower 80s. In oakland, 74 degrees today in 75 degrees today in palo alto. San francisco will still have smoke drifting by and high temperatures today up to 71 degrees. Still breezy tomorrow, but we will have some cooler temperatures for the rest of the week and also extending into the weekend. Inland areas, upper 70s today and that cooling trend underway as we will have several waves of some cooler temperatures moving in, and now the wind shifting from the northeast. Blowing that smoke away from parts of San Francisco and the east bay moving it over marin county and poor air quality continues. Hopefully this will help with containment as we will still see those winds shifting as we go through the next several hours, but weve been talking about the winds coming out of the north and it was really strong earlier today and then over the next several hours, were looking at the wind speeds coming down to about 10 to 15 miles an hour. Its all about getting people out, getting them safe and they will focus on containment as weve heard later on as we go through the day. But temperature wise, looking pretty good here as we go into the rest of the afternoon. Marcus and laura . All right. Thank you very much, kari. At quarter to noon already this morning, getting word from pg e. They say 114,000 customers remain without power as a result of the napa fire and Sonoma County fire. They are working to arrange that right now. Some people have been having trouble with cell service as well in that area, so well continue to monitor everything thats going on. Right now, youre looking at sky ranger. You can see the fire continues to burn at this hour. We know this is one of the areas hit hard by the fire. We have been watching the people, some people go back to their homes after seeing what was happening there. Devastating time. But weve also seen some brighter sides. People, even though they have lost their homes, they have found a brighter side. Theyre helping other neighbors deal through this. This is a tough time for a lot of people. Weve seen people at the Evacuation Centers talk about just being thankful that they are able to that they are safe, their family members are safe during this hour. Yeah, we look at these live pictures from nbc bay area sky ranger flying over many of the sites of the fires that continue to burn, the smoke billowing into the air. Just into our newsroom right now, we know the fires have burned at least 57,000 acres so far. No sign of containment. This was a harrowing sight to see this morning. This is from santa rosa. This is joust outside the Kaiser Hospital where they had to evacuate the hospital about 5 00 this morning, 5 15ish, and they literally had to pull people out still in their hospital beds, still attached to some of the medical equipment and their ivs well, take them to awaiting ambulances. There werent enough ambulances. Nurses, doctors had to pull up their own cars to try to transport some of the patients from the hospital away from there because the threat of fire was looming so close. Yeah, just nearby, there was a Mobile Home Park that caught fire literally next door to this to this next to this hospital. As you can see right there, this is the scene that happened this morning. Weve seen the aftermath of that. Damian trujillo is here. We want to get to this press conference. Thats right. Lets listen in to what is happening. Throughout the bay area where the fires are. [ inaudible ] you know what, its a little hard to make out. Were going to try to keep it it looks like were having a problem with the audio there a little bit. What this is is the office of Emergency Services at mathers air force base right now. The governor has declared this a state of emergency, the fires burning in napa and Sonoma County this morning. So they were talking about some of the evacuations that are underway. Theyre probably talking a little bit about the game plan now and all the resources theyre pulling in from throughout the state to try to battle these devastating fires. This is something weve seen a couple of these press conferences. Theyre talking about how theyre going to continue to make sure people are safe. Todays been talking about this is the time to start discussing how theyre going to combat the fire because that continues to burn at this hour. And it continues to spread as we like you said, laura, the fire has burned at least 57,000 acres of in the north bay. This is just astounding to watch this. As youre looking at now, these are live pictures now from sky ranger, as you can see the thick clouds of smoke. This is all coming from that fire as we continue to watch that this morning. As we continue to watch that at this hour. As we told you all if youre just tuning in, this all started last night at 10 00, 10 00 p. M. On sunday. And here we are, 11 49 a. M. On monday as we approach noon and that fire continues to burn. Atlas peak road. That is where we got the first reports of the fire. But as you can see, it has spread over many different areas. I dont know if i should say spread, but other fires have popped up in different areas. Tubbs lane area, that area weve seen about 35,000 acres burned right now. The hopper avenue, this is where that fire hopped over 101 and causing fire to some other structures in that area. You see down there to the south, seers point. This is what firefighters are dealing with. Firefighters have popped up all through the north bay in that area as they continue to figure out what is going on. We know theyve been focussing their efforts on making sure the people make it to safety. Yes, very much so. We expect those tanker drops to be happening if theyre not already. Its tough to make it out because our nbc bay area sky ranger fleeing overhead. Look at all the smoke billowing through. Tough to get to the exact locations because there are so many fires burning. Were talking 10 to 15 fires in the area and theyre all being tactic tact attacked in a certainty different tactical way. Ive had reports as far south as san martin and gilroy now. Smoke is billowing throughout the bay area there. As the fires continue to burn and 0 containment so far. As we continue to watch this, we monitor whats going on at many of the different shelters that are in place, and right now i think we may be able to go to jodi hernandez. Okay, we dont have her just yet. Were working on that. We have reporters throughout the area. Actually, just giving us a few of whats going on there. We have people in neighborhoods as well as where businesses were. And there are Evacuation Centers. Its interesting because marcus and i we got up very early. We came on air early this morning at 4 00. So i feel like weve taken you through some of the steps of this fire where we saw, you know, the Mobile Home Park that was completely engulfed and now virtually, you know, six, seven hours later being on air, seeing some of the people return to those locations to see the devastation. Either their homes, you know, completely lost in the blaze and now just reduced to rubble. All right. I want to check in with vicki v. I. Winn right now. Wiki, where are you you . What can you show us . Reporter hey, laura and marcus, we are on bias tenial way. We just pulled over to put up a signal because we want to show you another house or some sort of structure is going up. You can see that thick black smoke in the air. To give you an idea of the priorities the firefighters have. Were walking here which is closed right now. Its safe for us to cross the street. This fire is burning right here. No firefighters here to fight it because even though it is near structures, near homes, near a civilized area, theyve got other priorities theyve got bigger priorities. Weve seen a number of fire tru trucks heading up bicentennial way. We understand at least 1,500 structures have burned. Expect that number to go up. 20,000 people evacuated. Weve talked to some of the evacuees on our way up here we spoke with a woman named joan murray. Shes driving up to sonoma in order to pick up 14 or 15 frail senior citizens. She doesnt know where shes taking them and doesnt know the status of her own home. She lives in that area where i believe Damian Trujillo and pilar have been reporting out of. These flames are burning hot. It is the urban wildlife interface that is burning all throughout this city. Thankfully right now, winds are extremely calm, so even though there is ash raining down on us and were hearing pops and sometimes seeing the embers come down from the trees, that is not getting picked up by the wind and being carried to other structures. That is going to be on the firefighters side as they move forward no this battle to try to contain what is at 0 containment right now, these 10 to 15 wildfires burning here in Sonoma County as well as napa county. The humidity, very, very low. You can just see, right, you know, there is really no one here. We see back there, jeremy, if you can zoom in a little bit. Thats a fence that backs up to someones home. Just when we got here about five or ten minutes ago, neighbors were actually peeking up over that fence and telling firefighters people live here. There is a car in the driveway. Its our understanding, though, no one is in that home right now, so the folks who live here behind this fence are safe, but these are the kinds of small spot fires that are literally burning all over santa rosa right now. Obviously Sebastopol Fire Department truck right there heading up bicentennial. Were right near fountaingrove if folks are familiar with the santa rosa area. We understand there are so many santa rosa landmarks that are gone right now. Were hearing reports of the red round barn that is gone. The Catholic High School where i used to grow up in mark west springs, theyre saying that is gone. This gentleman has been riding around on his bike. You mentioned san miguel neighborhood was gone. Take a right and an immediate left, there is a huge structure fire. They have got the hoses going and everything. Firefighters battling. Was it a home, sir . A big home . Whats your sense of how big that home . 4,000 square foot home. Grab your stuff and go up there. Reporter thank you, sir. This is a gentleman who lives in santa rosa. Were going to break down, follow his advice and head up here. Mountain grove, homes here are large, beautiful, been here a very, very long time. A lot of People Living in these neighbors. That i think is probably the most unbelievable part of the eyewitness accounts were hearing and us as journalists. We cover these wildfires during wildfire seasons. Talking about some cabins or outhouses, structures that are burning. These are homes. These are neighborhoods that are on fire and theyre shopping centers. When you think of the residential and the commercial real estate that has disappeared overnight, the enormity, the magnitude of this fire will be felt for years to come, laura and marcus. Most definitely oh so. The personal stories were hearing from people that are returning to literally nothing. Luckily many have their lives. Lets hope that remains to be the case. Live from santa rosa. Thank you. All right. Now we want to take you back live to sky ranger. As you can see the fire continues to burn there. Were seeing getting you can see right there the chopper overhead. Im not sure what its doing, maybe just observing the area to see how they will battle this fire. We did hear from police over in napa and they were talking about thats one thing they will be doing as we have daylight so they can monitor whats going on. The fire seems still very strong. Thats one thing you would think now after more than 12 hours burning, but, no you cant, though. Look at all of that brush. Fuel for these fires just burning up and eating up that mountainside there. This is just one of many sights that were seeing. This is a very tough fight. This could be a very long haul for the firefighters that are coming from throughout the state as well. And then were seeing the fires that have happened here. We know the fires that have happened earlier this morning, now leaving another but ash behind. Right. Mark matthews is live at the scene in santa rosa with yet another resident i understand, mark, that is returning to find nothing there . Reporter were on crimson lane between carry and brandy here in the coffey park neighborhood, and this is the home of john. He just walked up to see this house. He turned the corner. There are homes down crimson lane that are not burned, and when he rounded the corner, it looked like his house was going to be okay. From the way the block looked. And then i heard him say, oh, my god, as he saw his house. Really, as he saw what is left of his house, which is what were looking at right now. John, can you talk to me a little bit . Yeah, i can. Reporter what happened last night . Just last night, it started smelling smokey and then the wind was really strong. So we were kind of woken up by that, and it was just sort of that, god, you know, its smokey. Can it be from that fire from wherever it was we heard on the news, you know . But it was super, super windy, so we just closed up the windows and just thought, man, this is really crazy. Then were just trying to, you know, gather our thoughts and then the neighbor pounded on our door and said, youve got to go now. There is a fire like a mile from your house. And were, like, is this real . I open up the garage door and there are lit embers flying like in the street. So im like, i guess were just going, like, now. So that was it. We got the kids. I have two teenagers. We just put on some clothes and got in my truck and left. Reporter the fire came from this direction . Is that right . Well, i dont know because we just got out. I dont know all i know is that there was a glow. Somebody said, oh, you can see the glow, but i i didnt take time to figure that out. It was like a mass exodus getting out of the neighborhood. We tried one direction. It was jammed. We tried another direction, it was jammed. Finally we got down barnes road to river road, and i just said, im just going to head straight to dernville. I dont care if i hit the ocean. Im just getting where the air is clean. Then we wound up in sebastopol, went to a safeway and bought some food and water and stuff like that. On the radio i heard that annually high scho high school. Reporter is your family there . We went to my sisters house. This is the first youve seen of your place . This is it. I didnt know if there was a hotline to call
