You are looking at a black mercedes with paper plates from carmax and distinctive chrome accents added to the vehicle. Inside the car, two men. You are only able to see the driver wearing blue or purple latex gloves, appears he has a mask on. Chp says the driver and the passenger are africanamerican. They first robbed the car key nas toll plaza yesterday morning then the bay bridge plaza yesterday afternoon. They are not saying how much money was taken. Our understanding is both toll takers were not hurt during the crimes. You might recall, late 2015 when two men used a gun to rob toll plazas, demanding their empty their cash registers. They assaulted a toll taker during a crime. Several months later, Law Enforcement arrest a 21yearold man and 17yearold boy. We are getting more information on this, but, again, here at the scene, one of the officers of the unit crashed into a suspect who was involved in a shooting earlier. At 5 35 on your monday morning, happening today, redwood city councilmembers are set to raise the minimum wage. It would increase it to 15 an hour before the state requires it. Californias minimum wage is set to increase a little each year. If they eventually approve the proposal, redwood city workers would hit that mark as early as 2019. We do not expect a vote tonight. More details now. Overnight, we looked at the impact of raising minimum wage on restaurants. A study found the higher the living wage in San Francisco, forced restaurants out of business. Those closings were mostly among lower rated restaurants. The study found San Franciscos minimum wage, 13 an hour is leading to fewer new restaurant openings. 5 36. This morning, we took a look at the housing crisis in san jose. According to the Housing Market update, the median Single Family home cost 996,000. You have to earn over 191, 000 a year to afford it. The average rent for a fwobedroom apartment exceeds 2600 a month meaning you have to make 104,000 a year. New this morning, an update on the progress of the erosion at halfmoon bay. They are dredging pillar point harbor. It makes more room for boats at the harbor and replenish sand at the beach. They hope Lessons Learned will apply to other spots in california. It happened around 11 30 saturday night in the citys knob hill neighborhood. A man with a weapon refused to come out of a house where he was holding his wife and two children hostage. Officers eventually shot the suspect. The wife and two children are okay. A developing story this morning. A sunday Church Service turned nightmare. A gunman opened fire killing one woman and injured six others before killing himself. It happened in nashville, tennessee at the Chapel Church of christ. A man wearing a ski mask stormed in. An usher tackled him. During the struggle, the gunman shot himself. The gunman never said a word. The guy came from the right side of the church and was shooting. Police say the gunman is 25yearold Emanuel Sampson originally from sudan. He came to the u. S. In the 1990s and used to attend the church. The usher is hailed a hero. New steps to release prisoners. Lawmakers sent two bills to the governor aimed at keeping the prison population in check. One would have parole officers release older prisoners who were young. Another mandates officials to consider whether Young Offenders fully understand their crimes. Overnight, we sorted through the data of jail overcrowding in california. We found a report from the Public Policy institute of california. It says californias prison population is more than 112,000. Its 35 over capacity. It is down from 163,000 in 2016. In 2009, the u. S. Supreme Court Ordered the state to reduce the prison population. A new report takes aim at the university of california pension. The l. A. Times reports the number of uc retirees that collected sixfigure pensioned jumped in the past five years. More than 5400 received pensions of 100,000. The pension for fully vested retirees is 80,000. We expect a bit of a slow to come in and pick up those winds geting gustier to the evening hours. This will kick up 1025 miles per hour, warming temps for the week. Tuesday and wednesday, well keep the nice, dry north winds bringing in the ridge of High Pressure, warming us up through wednesday before we see a change. It keeps us hot. Thursday and friday, we see that High Pressure moving out of the area. Cooler by friday and then it starts warming up just a tad bit by the weekend. According to federal court records, 6,17,000 cases are backlogs. Each judge carries an average of 1800 cases. The Immigration Judges have been the canary in the coal mine saying we were going to be overwhelmed and needed more help for more than a decade. The judge says the backlog has gotten worse since President Trump took office. It is taking a toll. The immigrants we spoke to have court dates set three to five years away.
