The blast and fire happened at an apartment in west oakland on peralta near 14th street. Hours later a charred body was found in the rubble. Nbc bay areas kim is live at the hospital where they were taken after the explosion. Reporter one witness told us the explosion knocked them all back and blew apart the wall, sending everyone running f their lives. When hes going through, there was a spark and, boom, that was it. It exploded. What the heck . Reporter jeremy says he was five feet behind the officers when the explosion happened that sent them all running for cover. Janice forest was inside her apartment, which is upstairs from the initial blast. Saw the smoke coming up out of the outlet. I just had to get everybody out. Reporter it all happened at a triplex on the 1100 block of peralta street in oakland. Two Alameda County sheriffs deputies were there trying to serve an eviction notice in a man in the bottom rear unit. A key had been broken off in the lock, forcing them to drill through it, creating sparks. They had no idea the apartments gas line had had been severed. Investigators say the tenant knew they were coming and why. The question is whether it was disconnected to commit suicide prior to our deputies being there, or was it disconnected or left on and then ignited knowing the deputies were there. Reporter after the fire was knocked down, investigators discovered a body in that initial apartment. They say its too badly burned to determine if its the man they were there to evict. while much of the triplex is damaged, no other residents were injured. The two deputies who were taken here to Highland Hospital are expected to be okay. They are being treated for minor injuries, including possible concussions. Reporting live, now back to you. And while house sitting, a male came to the door and said that he knew the homeowner and that he had some personal belongings inside the home. So she allowed him to come inside the home. It is not airborne yet, but signs are point to a day soon when the san jose Police Department will be able to fly its drone. Our nbc bay Area Business and tech reporter, scott budman, is live outside san joses city hall tonight where the drone is being discussed right now. Scott . Reporter yeah, janelle. Not yet ready for takeoff, but both sides have agreed to compromise so theres a lot less arguing these days about the police drone. It seems the controversial san jose Police Department drone is a little closer to takeoff. While San Jose City council met to further discuss the pds hopes for a drone, all sides seem to have come to an agreement that if privacy is respected, the drone can help the city. I do think we need to point out how important it would be to give the Police Department this tool. If you think about situations where theres a hostage situation, where theres a situation that puts the public or Police Officers in jeopardy where youve got an active shooter. There are some privacy concerns that go along with it, but in the end i think weve all come to realize that this particular tool is about helping save lives and helping protect our officers and the public if its ever deployed. Reporter the drone issue has been hot since early last year when the department quietly bought a drone for 7,000, angering many people who worried about privacy and safety. Now many of those groups say the pd has satisfied their concerns. We have very strict rules, the Police Department is recommending them to the city council. It will not have telephoto lens, infrared cameras, lasers. Reporter but even with feelings smoothed over a bit, the pd drone is not yet ready to fly. Thats because the pd itself says it will still need to get permission from the faa before they can even test the drone. Reporting live in san jose, scott budman, nbc bay area news. Either crank up your air conditioning or if youre like me with no air conditioning, youre in trouble. Weve got two more days before that super hot weather comes our way. You can see its absolutely beautiful conditions from the south bay right on up to the north bay. You can see our mt. Tammalpais. We do have some fog along the coastline in San Francisco and also the peninsula and we think it will come back tomorrow morning. Its not going to be extremely thick for the interior valley. Well start with 58 in the south bay, peninsula 60 and 59 for San Francisco. Now, the reason why weve been able to have this comfortable weather the past three days, its all about this trough of low pressure offshore. You can see it spinning out here on the Doppler Radar. That counterclockwise spin. Youll also probably zone right in on that rainfall just offshore right now. So i want to zoom in and get you a closer look at that. We do a little tracker on this and it is exactly 250 miles away. Its frustratingly close. But the way it looks right now, unfortunately, the counterclockwise motion around this will continue to steer this rainfall off to the north and we do not expect to get any of this wet weather. So here is the forecast for the next 48 hours. Wed like that rainfall, its not going to come our way. The storm system will stay there as we head throughout wednesday and also thursday. It will keep the fog at the coastline and possibly some isolated drizzle. And then as we head throughout this weekend, thats when High Pressure builds in. Temperatures warm back up into the hundreds and that fire danger begins to increase with also that high uv index. So saturday and sunday youre going to see on that scrolling sevenday forecast, thats when those numbers really begin to spike. Lets go ahead and get you into the microclimate forecast. Now for the north bay, east bay and also the trivalley, we do warm up into the triswravalley dongt hit the 90s tomorrow. Well get close in livermore with 88 degrees. Up into napa 85 and also sunny skies right throughout wine country. So this weekend forecast definitely gets the hottest as we head into saturdays forecast. Thats going to put us at 96 degrees for the south bay. East bay 93 and the trivalley 101. Then as we head into sundays forecast, those numbers will gradually cool off. Something else thats happening this weekend we know its going to be hot with a lot of you and thats our help clear the animal shelters event. Ill be out at San Franciscos spca this saturday. Well be doing live cutins and special shows throughout the day. Of course you can go to nbcbayarea. Com but i also hear rob mayeda is out there in puppy or kitty land right now . Rob and some of his new best friends. Nbc stations across the country teaming up with our local animal shelters. Weve seen puppies, kittens and now were looking for a cat on a leash . Cat on a leash, weve got that too. The puppies and kittens very easily adoptable, but one of the populations often overlooked at many shelters around the bay area are the mature cat population. One of them, neptune here, does do well on a leash, kid of acting a bit like a dog. Weve got the executive director with us. Melanie, a special program you have to match people with these older cats. We do. Its called meet your match. Adopters can come in and take a survey and it will tell them what kind of cat might be their kind of cat. Cats are classified by color and then attitude. So neptune here is 5 years old and he is considered an executive. So he is the type of cat that will go into your house. Hes going to look around the entire house, check out the closets, come and say hi to you, but hes not necessarily the cat thats going to jump in your lap and live there. Now these two kitties grew up together. This is apollo and pad foot. And these two are party animals, and so if you want an Entertaining Group of cats in your house where they are going to be in charge, they are going to kind of run your house and keep you thoroughy entertained. Both of them are about 4 years old. So if youre not prepared for puppydom or kittenom and all the antics that can endure, you can adopt an older pet and kind of match maybe a more laidback and calmer lifestyle. Yes. And actually what people consider an older cat really isnt that old. So even at 4 years old, cats can live until theyre 15 or 20 years old, so youre still looking at a really long, rich life with these animals. Theyre just not those small, cute, cuddly its mlittle animalt people are attracted to. So this weekend weve got clear the shelters. Talk about what people can expect and walk us through the process of adopting another member of the family. Valley humane is all about finding the perfect home for these animals, but were very pro people. We believe that people provide Outstanding Opportunities for these animals so we want to just have a conversation with families, make sure that theyre matched up with the right animal, and then we provide them many resources after the adoption to make sure everyone is happy in the new home. Thanks for helping us out. Hopefully you help us out clear the shelters here. Raj, janelle and jeff, we have three cats here, three anchors back at the set. I think we can do a match right here.
