Mike inouye joins us now with more. Good morning. I want to put this into context for the morning commute. About 8 00, between 8 30 and 9 00 is the worst time of the morning as far as the volume of traffic heading up through oakland and hayward. Starting at 8 00 we will have one pro is session heading up from that chapel over across a street and over to the oracle arena and 8 45 is when the pain procession will head over there for that ceremony. This will mean rolling closures. Do whatever chp needs you to do, stopping for a moment or what have you, but dont avoid the area completely, just plan on additional delay because there will be a few minutes of stopping here and there and quite a spectacle, folks. Again, obey what Law Enforcement needs you to do for safety sake. If you can take 580 through oakland area. Everyone is pitching together this morning works local Law Enforcement agencies are stepping in to help cover the city of hayward so every officer in that department can attend this mornings funeral. The Alameda County bless and chp will cover traffic in hayward for 36 hours. Police say the city of hayward will be staffed more now than it would be on a normal day or night. If anybody thinks that they are going to come to the city of hayward, act crazy, act a fool, think again because we have plenty of people out there that are going to handle any problem that comes you up. So dont do it. That enhanced coverage started last night and it will end friday morning. Meantime, we are going to air the entire Memorial Service right here on nbc bay area. Reporting live here in santa cruz, bob redell, today in the bay. At 6 06 we move to a developing story. Here is video just into our newsroom of a fast moving wildfire growing by the is second in lake county. Weve just learned that the fire jumped in size overnight from 3,000 acres to 5,000. So far its burning out of control at least 500 people are under evacuation orders it this morning. Those flames are sweeping through morgan valley, which is on the south side of clearlake. Were told crews diverted air resources from the wragg fire burning in napa county to lake county to help battle those flakes. So far one building destroyed, several others threatened. No word yet on a cause. Also new this morning flames dangerously close to a busy freeway not just one fire, were talking four fires in the same area along highway 24 in lafayette. In just the past 24 hours. Now fire investigators want to know if someone is setting them on purpose. Today in the bay Stephanie Chuang live in lafayette this morning. Firefighters are calling this suspicious. Reporter they are because these are happening all along highway 24 here had in lafayette near orinda. 20 minutes and two miles of one another. So concerning because as you mentioned so close to traffic. Overnight ten fire crews were called out to put these small fires out, happening along the stretch of oak hill road rest to el nido ranch road. The fires not big in size, in in all less than an acre but suspicious in nature according to contra costa fire which adds all these fires are a good reminder to everyone in the bay area to stay vigilant to high fire danger. Fires can start very easily right now because of the weather conditions can, they are just ripe for that. Plus when you add on the drought to that, that make it makes for an even worse fire season which were starting to see now. Reporter last nights fires just a couple miles were yesterday mornings eight acre grass fire which did force one family to evacuate out of its home above highway 24. Firefighters are still trying to determine what started that fire. Investigators want to talk to driver, they want to talk to the people out here along highway 24 in am lafayette bordering or rent at that between 10 50 and 11 30 last night. Stephanie chuang, today in the bay. We know how dry it is out there and, you know, the current conditions, a cool start to our morning as we take a live look outside overlooking san jose. Probably the coolest part of our day as weve been experiencing the feelings of summer. We have. We still have that cloud cover in San Francisco this morning. Are they being spared from some of this heat . Yes, along with most of the bay area. If you are waking up with clouds this morning it will take its time clearing out. We are back to a more typical pattern for this time of year. Yesterday was all clear, you knew it was going to be a hot day. Now as we take a look at those temperatures its in the low 60s, even some mist and drizzle for the north bay. Look at San Francisco now, we o do see that there are some campers out there at at t park, the Giants Slumber Party coming down from yesterdays win, still celebrating out there on the field. Now looking at the highs today, not as hot as yesterday, 75 in San Francisco, but look at the north bay and south bay. Still in the lower 90s, east bay 78 degrees and in the trivalley we will also have those highs today that will be very hot reaching 97 degrees, peninsula today 79 degrees. So widespread temperatures across the bay. We will sort that out and give you an idea of what to expect this weekend coming up in less than ten minutes. Im happy to report that eastbound 580 through livermore looks better now. Look at the live shot we have, the crew has just finally cleared, i watched the last of those trucks clear to el charro and approach. We will look at the map again. Head leads are westbound, we had big backup until five minutes ago, now were back to normal for the trivalley commute. A little slowing through hayward for 880 south, the bay bridge toll plaza has a backup but no problems on the approach. San jose northbound 101 starting to see that volume restore it self for the morning commute. Silicon valley with the build which is typical about this time. It is 6 10. Still ahead on today in the bay, missing for nearly two weeks, searchers now turning to Controversial Technology in hopes of finding a San Francisco teacher who vanished near lake tahoe. Plus what do you suppose is the best selling vehicle in america . Take a guess, i will tell you if youre right coming up had business. And a live look outside right now, that is downtown san jose. A little bit of haze in the air and a whole lot of heat. More on that and your local news right after it this break. The California National guar announcer youre watching today in the bay. Its 6 13 on your thursday morning. The California National guard is turning to technology to try and find a missing San Francisco teacher. Drones are now joining that search effort. The drones will scour the he will do remember dough National Forest in the hopes of locating ed cavanaugh. He was last seen friday july 17th. Drones are expected to collect some images to help searchers on the ground. This marks the first time the guard is using a drone for a search and rescue mission. The battle over Affordable Housing heating up in the south bay as a lot of people say theyre getting priced out. 150 people mostly seniors living at the winchester mobile Home Community in West San Jose are fighting to keep their homes. The 16 acre park is right next to the Winchester Mystery House and the parks owners are negotiating to sell the land to make way for a project including luxury style condos. The people that live there met with developers last night for the first time in two years. And somehow despite all our efforts the park is closed and we have to leave. We will have to leave the bay area. Theres no place in the bay area that we can afford. Thats true for everyone that lives here. Im shocked. San jose has the most mobile home parks in the state. You saw that couple talk about a position that so many people are in here, so perhaps no surprise to hear that the gap between bay area haves and have notes is apparently one of the widest anywhere in the u. S. That information according to a new inequality study performed by a Silicon Valley research group. Low and high income households were separated by a whopping 263,000, thats nearly 90,000 more than the national average. The top 5 of all bay area households arched income more than 30 times the bottom 20 . Americas best selling vehicle getting some attention this morning for its crash test results. They are both good and bad. Scott mcgrew, this is the new ford f150, the aluminum one. More people buy ford f150s than any other week. Three best selling vehicles in america are all trucks, the a. M. Ri comes in fourth. F150 revolutionary new truck, first to be built of aluminum. There was a lot of curiosity as who how it would do in crash tests. The f150 change of metals, huge move. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ran tests and found two interesting things. First, fixing a car made of aluminum costs a lot more money, but we find of expect that. These tests are conducted by the government, but they are very similar to the other tests. The iihs loved how the crew cab did in safety tests. Top safety pick. The extended cab version, though, fared much more poorly. Apparently its built without these special steel bars found in the regular truck. Bottom line, best selling version of the best selling vehicle is very safe, even though its not made of steel. Other news back here in Silicon Valley we make apps. They call it live text. Video without sound but with text. All the emotion of a face with none of the talking. Yahoo showed this on at a press conference yesterday. The Obama Administration is pushing for Software Companies to make it easier for the government to read he messages. That was part of president obamas appeal to Silicon Valley when he came to stanford. Companies like apple and google have done the opposite, made email and instant messaging much harder for the government to read using encryption. This had he feel burned by the recent revelations about what the nsa is doing. I bring this up because there was a rather astonishing op ed in this mornings Washington Post in which three former Intelligence Leaders agreed with apple and google and not the white house. Former Homeland Security secretary michael churn nof, the former head of the ns. A and former Deputy Defense secretary all day Silicon Valley should is move forward with more encryption to prevent the government from reading our messages. You dont expect that from these three men. A lot of criticism directed towards the government and this as social Media Companies found out they couldnt protect their users, that that information they had to give it up. Social Media Companies were furious at the government after the Edward Snowden revelations. A site south, the coast guard investigating an oil shine in the ocean near goleta beach. Two miles wide and 1,000 with regards offshore. Officials are not calling it an oil spill because they are not sure what is causing it. The area is prone to national seepage. The incident about ten miles from the beach where a broken pipeline spilled over 100,000 gallons of crude oil back in may. Time to get a look at your draft at 6 18. We take a live picture of what you can make out of the bay bridge. No surprise. Were seeing plenty of to go out there to start your day. So is the humidity going to start today . You told us about that earlier. Yes, it starts to creep up today. Even with the warm air it wont be as hot as yesterday but wont feel that much more comfortable because we will have more mugginess to the air. As we take a live look at san jose you see the clouds, something we didnt see yesterday morning, but it wont be long before those clouds are out of here, at least for the south bay. Come over and take a look at this sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen. You can go ahead and start to make plans for the weekend. As you head out today areas of coastal position and the sun is rising right now as we speak. Temperatures mott as hot inland today and a cool breeze returns to the bay and mostly cloudy and foggy tonight with the sunset at 8 16. A look at those current temperatures, its 64 degrees in livermore, santa rosa 61 degrees and San Francisco at 60 degrees. Nice and cool this morning. But still hot today in spots like los gatos, 92 degrees, 82 degrees in palo alto, the castro will be at 75 degrees, you will have a hard time shaking those clouds today. Napa 85 degrees and 98 degrees in walnut creek. We could see a couple of spots hitting the triple digits once again, but not as widespread as yesterday. So now we have a shift in the wind, its coming in from more of a southwesterly direction. Here we are at noon and the winds are coming in from the west, that brings am nice cool ocean breeze, winds 15 to 20 miles an hour, maybe even a little higher in napa. The heat will fade these next couple of days, as High Pressure slides to the east. That was fighting back that onshore flow. But then as we go into the weekend it draws in some monsoonal moisture and that could cause some rain for southern california, more clouds for us, higher humidity and the possibility of some storms popping up in the sierra. So keep that in mind if you are heading farther to the east. There may be some pop up showers and storms for the bay area, the chance of seeing that very slight. Really only for tomorrow. This weekend it all dries out and highs still in the 70s and 80s, widespread across the bay. Lets see how those roads are flowing now with mike. Underneath some lower clouds just fine like you said, these clouds likely to stick around where you do find them they will be here. We see a smooth backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. Smoothly moving. The past track lane there was a disabled vehicle reported but i do see movement here. No big deal coming off the east shore freeway, a little build typical will. Rest of your bay smooth flow south through hayward and the trivalley show typical patterns, lighter volume here as well as northbound through the south bay. Quick look at the san mateo bridge and i give a shout out not to it this commute which is just shaping up but throughout the east bay again, remember, we have that procession going from hayward up through oracle later today. Between 8 00 and 9 00 you will see rolling closures because of that procession. It is 6 21. Still ahead on today in the bay, an unusual site at at t park happening right now. From the bay to l. If it this arrangement works out it would mark the first time two cities are awarded the games together. There is a time limit to make the decision. The usoc is going to have to submit its choice to a bid to the Olympic Committee by midseptember. Giants president larry baer led the previous unsuccessful bid but says he likes this new idea. I think the best approach to for the games actually to come to the United States in 2024 would be San Francisco and los angeles pairing up. A combination bid . A combination bid. They are going to have to make peace. Since it is so earl where he into the proposal its unknown how the events would be split up. Its believed the track and field events would be in l. A. Today in the bay tracie potts joins us live from washington, d. C. This morning. It is going to take investigators a couple of days to analyze that debris. Reporter exactly. They are looking for a number that should be stamped on what they believe to be a wing flap that should match the number of that boeing 777 that disappea ad more than 16 months ago now. They believe this part was washed up on the beaches of a small French Island called reunion, they believe that this part belonged to that malaysian flight that was headed to beijing and suddenly disappeared with 239 people on board. They searched for months, there were reports done that had a number of different explanations, but they could never quite figure out what happened and now this wing has has shown up. That foreign minister said this morning that this could be a major lead, a Significant Development in determining what happened to that plane. Interesting thing here is that it washed ashore on an island in the western part of the indian ocean, they had been searching in the southern part of that massive ocean. Even though Scientists Say it is entirely possible with the currents in that region that it could have drifted that far. Lunger was shot and killed doing what he loved, trying to protect his community. Today in the bay kris sanchez is live this morning at oracle arena. Kris, this will no doubt be a emotional day not only for those who now Sergeant Lunger personally but for total strangers as well. Reporter has true. Its perhaps appropriate, sam, that the celebration of life for Sergeant Lunger is happening at oracle arena next to the coliseum where he often went to games to watch the as with had his daughters. His body will be brought here in a procession larger than the one that he got on the day that he died, a motorcade that will depart chapel of the chimes in hayward this morning. Laura has the route information coming up in just a moment, but there was a family and then a public visitation last night where people gathered to err remember the man who was dedicated to family, duty and community. Sergeant lunger worked s. W. A. T. And the gang unit, he trained new officers and he coached girls softball teams. Other agencies are covering hayward today but nearly all members of the police force can be here and some of them were working the morning that Sergeant Lunger was shot and killed by 21yearold mark estrada during that traffic stop a week ago yesterday. This is how east bay congressman eric swaler described Sergeant Lunger to the house in d. C. He was described by his police chief as a warrior cop, an ethical Police Officer. Described by others as that ideal officer, that it goto guy. A lieutenant said he is the best cop and crime fighter i have ever seen. Now, that congressman will speak today along with Sergeant Lungers family, his daughters, his father and his brother will speak publicly for the first time, his sister is going to i think is. As we mentioned Governor Brown and other dignitaries will be in attendance and Hayward Police chief will also speak about her fallen officer. As the family leaves for a private burial six helicopters will fly overhead in missing man formation. The celebration of life begins at 10 00 this morning, again, the procession beginning before that. You are welcome to pay your respects along the route. Organizers just ask that you pull over so that they can make their way through. If youre coming here today to please out of respect for the family be prompt. In oakland, kris sanchez, today in the bay. It is 6 41. 51 i should say. Two local Law Enforcement agencies are stepping in to help cover the city of hayward so every officer in the department can attend this mornings funeral. The al immediate at that county share rifts department and chp will answer 911 calls and cover traffic in hayward for 36 hours. Police say the city of hayward will be staffed more now than it would be on a normal day or night. If anybody thinks that they are going to come to the city of hayward, act crazy, act a fool, think again because we have plenty of people out there that are going to handle any problem that comes up. So dont do it. That coverage started last night and will end friday morning. We will air the entire Memorial Service right here on nbc bay area, our coverage starts at 10 00 this morning. We will also be streaming the procession live online at nbcbayarea. Com starting at 8 45. That procession carrying Sergeant Lungers body will start at the chapel of the chimes funeral home in hayward, head up mission boulevard to a street then up interstate 880 to oracle arena. Kris sanchez mentioned rolling route closures along that route. Lets bring in mike inouye now. As kris said, beautifully, basically, whatever Law Enforcement asks you to do, whether it be pull over, pause on the roadway, do whatever they are showing you with regard to the vehicles on the freeway or on the surface streets. Lets put this into context for your morning commute. Between 8 00 and 9 00 we will see the bulk of the action through this portion of the east bay. Now, roughly had had route will take you along mission boulevard up here, highway 238, then a street cutting over to 880. This is a major compute direction right here heading up toward the coliseum. As they do it that those rolling closures will be quite a spectacle as well for the freeway on the southbound side, you are likely it to see slowing as well. Keep that in mind. This is between the 8 00 and 9 00 hour, it there will be two separate processions for two separate groups coming through. Lets get these Speed Sensors up here as well. We dont see too bad of a commute 880 slows through oakland and the bay bridge toll plaza has its metering lights on. We do have a crash southbound 880 at 92 that cleared from the shoulder after ten minutes. Traffic is lighter so it had had a chance to recover. That sent a bunch of folks over the san mateo bridge. Westbound we did see a lot of slowing thats starting to move better to the peninsula. So 101 will now start to see that build. As we look at the maps a smooth drive around the rest of the bay, anywhere south of the san mateo bridge just starts build over to the peninsula north down san jose and Silicon Valley we will give you a look at palo alto no real problem. North of university. Easy drive for the bay shore all the way into the city. 6 54. Happens today he should be getting ready for his sophomore year of high school.
