But pinpointing just when it will strike is still impossible. We can say a magnitude 7 in california occurs every decade or two. A magnitude 6 every year or two. How likely is a magnitude 7 on the hayward fault in fremont . We dont the faintest clue even though we have really good records there. Better than any place else in the state. The southern San Andreas Fault located in the Imperial Valley ruptures about every 200 years historically. But with this last big shaker almost 400 years ago it is considered the most overdue fault in the state. Its a double edged sword. We are watering less to save a Precious Resource during the drought. But that may soon end up putting us at risk of devastating mud slides. Marianne favro has advice from experts on how to prioritize your water use. Reporter look at this hillside. The problem is dry trees are stressed trees which are much more likely to topple during a storm. He doesnt water his trees at all now to save water during a drought. Ive been relying upon the abilities of trees to survive the long hot summer. Reporter even if the trees survive, vegetation expert says theyre extremely stressed making them much more likely to topple during a storm. It shrinks the root system. It also the vascular system the crown of the tree isnt getting water as readily either because of the lack of newer roots. So large branches and things can become more brittle. And oftentimes in the storm events, the winds that come with these types of storm events thanks can break out a lot easier. Reporter according to noaas climate prediction center, there is a favorable chance of el nino hitting california this winter. Yet were still in a drought. Which is why to prevent mudslides, the Water District wants you to prioritize the very limited water you do use. Essentially, let your grass go brown. Focus on hillside landscaping. I would water large trees, give them some water to kind of get their health back up. I would also water any vegetation that is serving to stabilize a hillside. Reporter he also suggests you aerate your brown, rock hard lawn to give water a place to go if we are lucky enough to get more rain. In san Jose Marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Okay marianne thank you. From our drought issues to el nino issues now to fire danger. These are live pictures of the fire weve been covering near Lake Berryessa and napa county.
