It depends on number one, the underlying condition of the patient, which means if you have arthritis in your neck already, you may not fare as well with a spinal fracture. At the end of the day, it has to do with mostly with the location of the injury and also whats called the mechanism of the injury, was it a Blunt Force Trauma verses a rotational injury. The spinal cord runs through the boni, you know, components of the neck, and if that is impinged upon, obviously, that can lead to paralysis, but a lot of these spinal fractures occur at the boni prominences at the outside of the neck, not in any close proximation to the nerve. The results of a Surprising New study find that leisure time sitting is linked to the higher risk of cancer. Get this, appears to be more harmful to women than men. Is sitting the new smoking . Can it cause cancer . A new study looks at more than 9,000 men and more than 77,000 women ages 50 to 74 and asked them, over the past year, how many hours a day do you spend sit, watching tv, reading, in your car . For about 15 years researchers for the American Cancer Society kept track of them, noting anyone diagnosed with cancer. After taking into account risk factors like age, weight, diet, exercise, and smoking, researchers found that women who sat more than six hours a day had a 10 increased risk of getting any cancer compared to women who sat for less than three hours a day. Specifically, multiple mile loma, ovarian, and increased risk for invasive breast cancer. But surprisingly scientists found no link between leisure sitting and cancer risk in men. Why would it be worse for women than men . A couple of reasons that pay postulate but we really dont know. Body fat composition, certain cancers are driven by estrogen. Other factors can lead to metabolic arrangements, high cholesterol and higher fasting insulin levels. At the end of the day were coming back to hormones, might be a difference between men and women in terms of estrogen. Important point is obese men also had a higher risk. One little point that i want to get in there. Men arent off the hook. Not off the hook. Can we define leisure sitting . Yes, so basically this is one of the limitations of the study that this was done by selfreport. So they characterize the different types of sitting as occupational sitting as opposed to leisure sitting which is just watching tv or reading a book. So maybe it sounds not quite scientific but the idea here is that this is more voluntary, right, that youre making a conscious decision to be sitting leisurely as opposed to, you know, sitting in front of the computer at work. We know this. Sitting is not great for you. Right. There are other outcomes that are not favorable that happen because of sitting. Yeah. Exactly. Apparently theres quite a body of literature on the Health Risks Associated with sitting. I say apparently because its not something that we think about directly. There have been studies in the past that have suggested that there is increased risk of cancer. In addition, theres obesity and heart disease, diabetes, all these other Health Conditions that have been associated with prolonged sitting. Yeah. We sit for a living. We have 500 scholars around the world in ten different countries, and theyre going on to do amazing things. Some of them have even graduated college which is a step further than we aim to do. Bringing girls across the world together. Today there are 125 high school and college shes the first clubs that single handlely raise money for scholars one cupcake at a time. The tie dye cupcakes are a signature fundraiser. Who cant bake cupcakes . Its an easy entry way into our mission. We raised over 2 million to date. While youre doing that im going to toast the pine nuts. This is probably the longest step. Thats making the pesto sauce from scratch. Exactly. Its easy. I do it a lot at home. And i see you there. And im cooking. Youre going to toast the pine nuts. A great technique is not to have to do it in the oven. No one wants to turn their oven on. Its summer. Its hot. Five months earlier i met bill, the man of my dreams. But then i got the call that changed the course of my life. I had a rare fastgrowing uterine cancer and had to start treatment immediately. I would not have blamed bill if he had decided to gracefully exit. Instead, he told me he loved me and we got to work. By january i had lost my uterus and my ovaries but i had also beaten cancer and was able to freeze embryos. After being one year cancerfree bill and i got engaged and after our wedding we began the process of finding a surrogate who could bring our child into the world.
