The hot topic in sacramento. Iigrtion bill that would impact the lives of thousands of calirfornia farm work we mentioned the hot topic in sacramento. An immigration bill that would impact the lives of thousands of farm workers. The permit act failed three years ago but could it pass this time around . Our political analyst, larry gerston, is with us. What has changed . Why could it pass now . It may have a much better chance this time than a couple years ago for a couple of reasons. First, historically look theres been a lot of issues here with farm workers. 330,000 farm workers in california. Theyve been largely immigrants largely undocumented immigrants. What happens now . Well, as Immigration Enforcement has tightened, the ability to have this many people around is much more difficult. Numbers have decreased considerably leaving farmers unable to collect all of the food they need. What happens . Less farm workers, you have less food less food you have higher prices. Second, theres a matter of support for the bill. This time around the thinking is that it may pass. Why . The farm bureau is footing the bill, thats happened in the past but you have support this time from the united food and commercial workers which represents a new alliance. Several thousand farm workers belonging there throwing in with this deal. Thats a big change. Logical steps forward it could pass. What could lead it to fail . Anything with immigration . Well most people consider the immigration a federal issue. Many people in the legislature do. They say, you know what . Maybe we should let this issue be handled by the feds and not get involved in this thing. Lets also remember theres a stalemate going on in conference and congress and theres a Court Challenge that left president obama unable to move ahead with his plan to allow several million of undocumented workers to stay here for three years. Also, theres another problem here. That is that some liberals might resist this thing. Why . The proposed bill is a bandaid in their minds at best and if it is a bandaid if this is what happens, what happens for pressuring complete immigration overhaul downstream. In terms of the demographics of our state, could latino clout have something to do with it . Look, were talking about the largest growing group in california ethnically speaking. Were talking about latinos. In 1970 we talked about 12 of the population. Today were talking about 40 of the population. Thats a huge surge. Moreover, they project as many as 49 of the population will be latinos by the year 2060. The numbers say a lot. Numbers of people turn into numbers of voters and that means that latinos get elected to office many more times and in many more numbers than we might have thought. More people get elected to office, people Pay Attention and here you have it. That could be a real pressure point. Dynamics are changing as we speak. Thank you, larry.
