Phase one of the complex will cost Sh315 million and is expected to be completed in six months.
Kisumu County has kicked off the construction of Sh500 million Kibuye market after demolishing more than 300 illegal structures in one of East and Central Africa’s oldest and largest open-air market.
Kisumu acting City Manager Abala Wanga said the clearance of the 13.6 acres of land now gives them an opportunity to embark on the first phase of modernising the market that will accommodate more than 3,000 traders.
Phase one of the complex will cost Sh315 million and is expected to be completed in six months. “The project was running behind schedule due to the acts of cartels who were putting hurdles and attempting to resist modernisation of the market,” he said.
